By Jay Berger “A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a first step,” a Chinese sage once said. Our first step was to rent a pop-up trailer so our family of five could try camping. The trip was a success. To pull the trailer on subsequent trips, we had to buy a bigger station wagon. Sundry equipment followed: sleeping bags, Coleman stove, lantern, grill, pup tent, cooler, and so on. Eventually when we went camping, we looked like the Grand Army of the Republic. Now we were clamoring for a canoe. I placed an ad in the

How Parents Can Help Youngsters Learn to Swim

What would summer be without days spent frolicking at the beach, lake or afternoons spent splashing in the pool? Fun in water makes hot days more enjoyable and bearable, and few summertime activities do not involve water play in one aspect or another. Although time spent in the water can be refreshing and entertaining, water does present certain hazards, particularly for those who do not know how to swim. Learning to swim at a young age is advisable and a great way to remain safe around the water.

swimming lessons do not remove all risks. Children still need constant supervision when in and around water. When enrolling children in swim lessons, parents should look for safety-certified instructors who have first aid and resuscitation training and certification. Many programs offered are sponsored by the American Red Cross or the YMCA. Private swim clubs usually have their own instructors. In addition to swim lessons, parents and other adults can ensure water safety by taking the following precautions:

• Children should never be left unattended in the water. It takes mere inches of water for a youngster to drown.

• In the pool or another body of water, caregivers should be within touching distance of young swimmers to provide help if needed, even if the child is wearing a floatation device.

• Keep rescue equipment by the pool. • Remove toys from the pool when it's not in use. These toys can attract children who will go in after them.

• A fence around Parents should consider swimming lessons the perimeter of for most children between the ages of one and the pool is another four. However, parents should be advised that safety barrier to consider. •

Even adults should be watched while swimming. It is always a safe idea to swim with a buddy, so that the other person can get help if something goes wrong.

Simple tips to keep your pool clean

comfort of their own backyard pool. But as every pool owner knows, keeping their pool clean and maintained for everyone to enjoy can take a bit of work. Here are some ways to keep your investment in its best shape all season

long. Keep up with shrubs If your backyard pool sits near trees and bushes, be sure to keep them trimmed throughout the season. This will help avoid additional debris from flying into your pool, which can create extra cleaning work for you. If possible, consider replacing these plants with those that create less of a mess. Clean the surface often Get rid of unattractive stains at the waterline with a quality surface cleaner. For best results, use the cleaner with a pool brush and rub from the top of the waterline to a few inches below the mark. Check levels regularly Be sure to monitor your pool's chlorine and pH levels

at least twice a week. The best time to do this is in the evening and several hours after the last swimmer has left the pool. If a rain or wind storm has occurred, wait about eight hours before testing. Reduce maintenance duties Besides providing increased comfort to swimmers, more homeowners are choosing saltwater chlorinated pools for ease of use and reduced maintenance. If you're looking to spend less time keeping your pool maintained, consider installing a saltwater chlorination system, which eliminates the need for buying, storing and handling chemical chlorine. Saltwater chlorinated pool owners also enjoy the benefits of less irritated skin and eyes, as well as a significant cost savings verses their chemical chlorine

counterparts. To learn more about saltwater chlorinated pools, visit www.swimincomfort.com. Run filtration system daily Water in constant movement is less likely to collect debris, such as dust, body oils and bacteria. Be sure to run your filtration system as much as possible throughout the summer to keep water as clean and clear as possible. Keep equipment tidy Pool skimmers are used to pick up yard debris, insects and other undesirable items that can fall into the water. While skimming the pool is typically needed before every swim, you should also clean the skimmers on a weekly basis, or as needed. A clean, maintained pool will help you get most from those carefree days of summer.

plans for the canoe.” So I told her how our daughter and two sons had enjoyed camping that summer, and how we especially liked remote places near lakes. I told her that a canoe seemed like the next step for us. Apparently, I’d said the right things, for the woman invited us to come look at a canoe. On the following Sunday, the whole family climbed into the car and drove to her house. We rang the bell, and a frail woman with white hair invited us in. Once we were seated around the kitchen table, she proceeded to engage each of us in conversation. She made it clear that the See Berger, Page 15

Berger canoe was special to her. She wanted it to go to a family that would use it with love and care.

Sunday. June 29, 2014 - 15

Contined from Page 12 It seems we passed the test, because she invited us out to the garage. It was empty, except for a wooden rack on

which rested THE CANOE. It was 18 feet long, with high curved bow and stern; green painted canvas over varnished cedar strips; striped canvas seats, one with a cedar backrest; and two cushions stuffed with balsam-fir-needles. A portrait of an Indian chief had been wood-burned on a hand-carved paddle. The canoe was magnificent. It was almost too much to hope that such a glorious thing could be ours. Dazzled, we followed the woman back to the house. She opened an old album and showed us a picture of a smiling couple on a porch swing. We recognized our hostess. The young man was handsome. She turned the page and we recognized the canoe. The

young man was in the stern, holding the Indian-head paddle. In the bow sat a young woman wearing a straw hat. “My husband courted me in that very canoe,” the woman explained. She told us about some of the outings they had enjoyed long ago. We feared the canoe was beyond our grasp. My wife and I had agreed that we could go as high as a $100.00. Not only was this canoe clearly worth more than that, but for the woman it must have been almost beyond price. Timidly, we inquired how much she was asking. “How much are you prepared to spend?” she asked. “Seventy-five dollars,” I stammered, leaving room for negotiations. “Tsk,” said the woman. “With your young family, I couldn’t possibly accept more than $35.00.” We shook hands fervently. Our treasured canoe has taken us many adventures—

island hopping on a Maine lake, blueberry picking expeditions, moonlit paddles to listen for loons. True to our word, we have treated it with love and care. When our children outgrew family camping, my daughter took the canoe to college. At the campus woodworking shop, she made a new center thwart to replace the old one. A workman there pointed out a small brass plaque, which we had overlooked. Thus, we found out that our canoe had been manufactured in 1907 by the Morris Canoe Company in Veazie, Maine. A fire a few years later put Morris out of business. So today, our canoe is a collector’s item, valued in the thousands of dollars. But the real value, for us, lies in the adventures our family had, and the memories we now treasure. We’ll never forget our friend, the woman who shared her memories and helped us to take the next step.
