To Advertise Call 413-562-4181 Challenge Diabetes Program at the Westfield Senior Center With funding from the Westfield Lions Club, Springfield YMCA ‘Challenge Diabetes Program’ Coordinator, Chet Galaska, will conduct three sessions at the Westfield Senior Center, 45 Noble Street, in June. The first session will be held on Wednesday, June 5 at 1 p.m. and is open to the public with no pre-registration necessary. Topics will include a physiological description of diabetes, what can be done about it, why people become diabetic, and the reasons that diabetics should not be blamed for having the disease. The next two sessions will be held on Thursdays, June 13 and 20 at 9:30 a.m. and are the basis of the ‘Challenge Diabetes Program.’ These sessions will deal with the reasons diet and physical activity affect blood glucose levels with practical suggestions for making changes “around the edges.” These two sessions are individualized and will provide the participants with the knowledge of how to lower their A1c. The program’s goal is to provide an efficient way to reach, teach, and motivate diabetics who would otherwise ignore the disease and suffer complications. Instructor Chet Galaska is author of ‘The Diabetes Book, What Everyone Should Know.’ Chet is a diabetic himself and knows firsthand the difficulties and frustrations of fighting it. Each class includes time for questions, answers and peer support. Advance registration is necessary for
the second two classes to be held on Thursdays, June 13 and 20 because space is limited. For more information or to sign up for the second two classes, please call the Senior Center at 562-6435. Western Mass. Master Gardeners Association to Offer Free Soil Testing The Western Massachusetts Master Gardener Association (WMMGA) will be offering soil pH testing at the Westfield Farmer’s Market on June 13 from 2 – 4pm. Does your lawn or garden need lime? If you live in Western MA the answer to this question is a definite maybe. Our soils vary from one yard to the next. For some yards, lime needs to be added every few years to keep plants healthy. The only accurate way to know if your lawn or garden needs lime is to have the soil tested. If you applied lime in the fall now is the time to check it for the new growing season. Plan to have the best garden ever! It is easy to collect a soil sample. You can collect from your lawn, vegetable garden, perennial flower garden, under trees or shrubs but keep each collection separate. You could end up bringing in multiple samples! With a trowel remove a plug of soil from the surface down to the proper depth. Sample depths are: 3-4 inches for lawn, 6-8 inches for flower or vegetable garden, 10-12 inches for trees or shrubs. Collect from several spots in your sampling area. If the area is small collect 4-6 samples, large 8-12 samples. Place the soil into a bucket and mix it all together. Remove twigs and other coarse materials. Place about 1 cup into a zip lock bag. If your soil is at all damp, you can leave the bag open to let it dry out and close it just when ready to bring in. Label each sample bag with its type – vegetable, lawn, perennial, etc. and the approximate size of the area. Strawberry Festival WESTFIELD The Episcopal Church of the Atonement of Westfield, MA will celebrate its 157thYear of Strawberry Festival on Thursday, June 20. This year’s beneficiary of funds raised at the event will be the Westfield Soup Kitchen. Tickets for the event are $5. Serving times will be from 4 to 6 pm on the Church lawn at 36 Court Street in Westfield
and from 6 to 8 pm on the Town Green (Main/Broad Streets). Tickets may be purchased in advance at the Westfield Farmer’s Market (every Thursday from 12-6 at the Church) or at the event. The Episcopal Church of the Atonement has been conducting this Festival since 1863, when it started as a fundraiser to build their place of worship–they raised $60. Once their parish was established, they turned their fundraising effort to supporting the community. Over the years, many local organizations have
benefited from this event. Organizations are chosen by the Church through an application process based on level of need and benefit to the community–and most importantly one that shares their mission. The Westfield Soup Kitchen has been in existence for over 30 years. The Soup Kitchen was established to serve those in need of a dinner meal and fellowship, free of charge, each night of the week (except Saturdays), no questions asked. Run by volunteers and supported by local community

groups, approximately 15,000 meals are served annually. Generous volunteers provide meals and the Soup Kitchen provides a safe, clean, temperature controlled environment for visitors to sit and eat. The Soup Kitchen is located at 101 Meadow Street, Westfield. The proceeds from the Episcopal Church of the Atonement Strawberry Festival will greatly help the Westfield Soup Kitchen continue to provide this daily meal service to the Westfield community. We have found a kindred spirit in the Church of
the Atonement and we are grateful. In support of your local Soup Kitchen and the Church of Atonement, we encourage you to enjoy a dish of strawberries with either a biscuit or ice cream –while supplies last! We will be celebrating this event in conjunction with Westfield on Weekends’ presentation of MusicFest. Come on down and eat some strawberries, enjoy some music and know that you are supporting your fellow community members –one organization at a time.

American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, which funds research, creates educational programs, advocates for public policy, and offers much-needed support for those affected by suicide. For survivors of suicide loss like Roxanne and Ron, the Overnight Walks are a way to feel supported by a community of people who have gone through a similar experience. For those with a connection to the cause, the Overnight Walks provide a sense of camaraderie and a welcoming environment.
Roxanne will be walking to commemorate the life of her only daughter, Selina, who lost her battle with anxiety and depression in 2017. Ron is walking to help all directly impacted by this devastating illness. Each walker raises a minimum of $1000 to participate in the Overnight Walks. They will be walking under the name “Team Selina” as a legacy to her. Demographically, suicide is the second leading cause of death for young adolescents and adults between the ages of 10 and 34. To Advertise Call 413-562-4181 Chester High Alumni Coming Home Chester High School Alumni will be coming home to Chester this year for their 116th annual reunion and meeting on Saturday, June 29. The meeting draws a large group of people associated with the former Chester High School, including Chester Residents who graduated from Gateway after Chester High School closed in the late 1960s. This year’s festivities begin with a social hour at 1:00 p.m. at the Chester Railroad Depot and continue
informally throughout the entire weekend as “Blue Devils” and “Quarriers” wander around town visiting old friends and relatives. The Association’s annual business meeting will be held at 4:30 p.m. and Officers and Board Members will meet at 12:00 p.m. Chester High has traditions dating back well over one hundred years, but the Association has no members from that long ago! Among the many mysteries every year are questions like, “Who will be the oldest member?”
and “Who will come from the farthest away?” In the midst of all the reminiscing, prizes are awarded for the first local and first out of state reservation. There is never a lack of laughter, perhaps because the threat of detention is long gone even though former teachers frequently attend. All classes will be honored, especially the fifty-year class of 1969 and twenty-five-year class of 1994. Dave Pierce of the Chester Foundation has also offered to conduct several tours including the granite saw near

The reunion is not limited to graduates of Chester High. Anyone who does not receive an invitation may simply send a check (tickets are $7.50 per person, payable to Chester High School Alumni Association) to Robert Goewey, 1 Aldrich Avenue, Huntington MA 01050. Please make reservations no later than June 20. Dixieland Stomp The North Hall welcomes Dixieland Stomp with their performance, The Life, Times, and Music of Louis Armstrong on Sunday, June 23 at 2 pm. This energetic group combines the sounds of the trumpet, clarinet, banjo, tuba and two trombones to perform traditional Dixieland and blues. Their tribute to the jazz legend features music in the New Orleans and Chicago up tempo style. The performance will include popular favorites from the influential artist, including When the Saints Go Marchin’ In, Heebee Jeebee, West End Blues, and 12th Street Rag. Much of the music is actual transcriptions of Louis Armstrong’s Hot Five and Hot Seven recordings that he did in Chicago in 1926 and 1927. Performing the foot-stomping music will be Peter Grimaldi on the trumpet, Edward Mari on the clarinet, Gene Bartley and David Neill on the trombone, Ron Calabrese on the banjo, and Will Choe on the tuba. A meet-the-artists reception with refreshments will be held at intermission in the hall’s art gallery. The gallery will be exhibiting the nature and landscape photography of Richard Chapman. Admission is $10 at the door, student/ youth admission is free. All performances take place at Historic North Hall, 40 Searle Road (off Route 66), Huntington. The hall is wheelchair-accessible and air-conditioned. Information on the entire summer festival and performers bios can be found at www.northhallhuntington. org or call 413-667-5543.
Sunday. June 2, 2019 - 21 Hilltown Open Studio Tour announces 2019 dates Experience first-hand the creative processes of Western Massachusetts artists! The Hilltown Arts Alliance is pleased to welcome visitors to the second Open Studio Tour featuring thirty artists across five Hilltowns. The tour will feature artists of a variety of media and a discussion of their work on both the technical and creative side. The 2019 tour will be on June 22nd and 23rd and will occur from 10 am to 5 pm on both days. The tour is an admissionfree event, but many of the artists will have work for sale. Meander timeless back roads, rolling hills, farms, forests and mountain streams as you make your way between studios. You may begin at any studio (locations and map on www. hilltownartsalliance.org). New this year will be an exciting partnership with the William Cullen Bryant Homestead, a property of the Trustees. This National Historic Landmark in Cummington, MA is the residence of one of America’s greatest poets. William Cullen Bryant’s verses celebrate this quintessential American landscape and helped inspire the 19th-century land conservation movement. The work of sculptor Beckie Kravetz, landscape painter Scott Heyl, and metal sculptor James Kitchen will be on display at the Homestead during the tour. Kitchen will do demonstrations of turning forgotten pieces of scrap metal from the Homestead barn into art. Tours of the Homestead with highlights of Bryant’s influence in the arts will also be available that day to visitors. After the tour on Saturday, June 22nd, visit the Hilltown Bash and Cummington Community Picnic, featuring a potluck, dancing, and music from fresh, local talent. To conclude the Hilltown Open Studio Tour, The Bryant Homestead will host a farmto-table multi-course dinner in the field curated and prepared by Wheelhouse Farm on Sunday, June 23rd. Reservations will be required and can be made online at thetrustees.org/bryanthomestead.
