Coin show scheduled WEST SPRINGFIELD - Local coin collectors will pursue their hobby Sunday, March 17, at a coin show offered by the West Springfield Coin Club stage their at the Dante Club. The show, which the club has staged twice each year at the 1198 Memorial Drive social club for about 30 years, will begin at 9:30 a.m and continue until about 3 p.m. Both admission to the show and parking at the Dante Club are free. Visitors at the show will be able to examine a wide range of U.S and foreign coins and related collectibles which will be offered for sale. In addition, dealers at the show will provide verbal appraisals of coins visitors may bring with them and often offer to buy the coins. Precious metals - including jewelry and bullion - will also be bought and sold. The 23 tables available at the Dante Club have been reserved by local coin dealers and by dealers from the surrounding states. Patrons of past shows who left their addresses were sent postcards reminding them of the upcoming show and recipients who bring those postcards with them may claim a pick from a grab bag of vintage U.S. coins which will include two U.S. silver dollars. There will also be a raffle offered at the show with prizes which include a proof silver dollar and a silver proof set. The club meets monthly at 7 p.m. (with a summer hiatus during July and August) at the Mittineague Congregational Church at 1840 Westfield St., in West Springfield. The meetings are generally staged on the second Sunday of the month. The remaining meetings of 2019 will be on April 14, May 19, June 9, Sept. 8, Oct. 13, Nov. 10 and Dec. 8. All are welcome. At each meeting, a program about a specific aspect of coin collecting is offered and the club's business is conducted. Following a social break, the members offer a variety of coins for sale at an auction.

The Unify high school students are bringing education to those that it makes the most impact by a program that explains the effects of bullying to their younger peers. There are countless children and teens waging quiet battles against bullying. Many believe they are alone. Unify Against Bullying wants these children to know they are far from alone, but are supported by a loving, caring community of fellow students, teachers, parents and business and community leaders. Scholarship and Fellowship Funds Available The Horace Smith Fund, now in its 120th year, has scholarship and fellowship money available for graduates of Hampden County public and private high schools. Scholarships awards of $12,000 are distributed as $3,000 annually and renewable each year until graduation. Fellowship awards of $15,000 are distributed as $5,000 annually and renewable for two additional years. Students must maintain at least a B average in college. Recipients are selected on a variety of criteria, including financial need, college entrance exam scores, class rank, extra-curricular activities and recommendations. Of great importance is a personal written account of why the student feels deserving of financial assistance. Fellowship applicants must also submit their transcripts and, if applicable, GRE or degree-specific test scores. All recipients must be full-time students and residents of Hampden County. Last year, $382,000 was awarded to 36 individuals. Scholarships were given to 26 graduating seniors from 13 Hampden County high schools. Five scholarships were also awarded to current college students to assist them in completing their undergraduate degrees. Six fellowships were given to college graduates pursuing graduate degrees, who had graduated from Hampden County high schools. The Horace Smith Fund was established in 1899 by the successful and generous philanthropist named Horace Smith, co-founder of Smith & Wesson, located in Springfield. The scholarships and fellowships are named for Walter S. Barr, a West Springfield businessman, whose widow left the bulk of the family estate to The Horace Smith Fund in 1950. Completed applications must be received either electronically or by mail to The Horace Smith Fund at 16 Union Avenue, Suite 2K, Westfield, MA 01085 no later than March 15, 2019. Westfield State hosts “When Two Worlds Meet: Native Americans of Western MA” Westfield State University will host a Westfield Wednesdays 350th Anniversary Historical Lecture Series event titled “When Two Worlds Meet: Native Americans of Western MA,” on Wednesday, March 20 at 6:30 p.m. on Dever Stage in Parenzo Hall, 577 Western Ave., Westfield. The event will be presented by Gail White Usher, education coordinator at Roseland Cottage and Arnold House, both of which are maintained by Historic New England, the oldest and largest regional heritage foundation in the United States. The lecture will focus on what daily life was like for the Native American inhabitants of Westfield; the Woronack, Pocumtuck, and various Eastern Woodlands tribes before, during, and after European populations settled in the area. In addition, it will highlight how the tribes retained their cultural identities from 1620 through 1750. The event is free and open to the public. For a list of the “Westfield Wednesdays” lecture series, visit www.westfield350.org/lectures. AGAWAM HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION MEETING The Agawam Historical Association will be hosting their member meeting
Wednesday March 20 at the Captain Leonard House at 7:00 pm. Shelly Melanson Goncalves will present her extensive hand fan collection. Shelly, originally from Agawam, has been collecting fans since she was a young girl, and is a member of the Fan Association of North America. Her collection includes 18th and 19th century European, Asian, and Art Deco hand fans. She is a former Chicopee School teacher and currently is a substitute teacher in Newburyport, MA. Please bring your favorite fan! The public is welcome, and encouraged to join the Association. The Agawam Historical Association (AHA), a 501(c) (3) non- profit organization, has been part of the Agawam community for many years with the mission to preserve the Town’s history and artifacts and to educate the citizens of Agawam. The Thomas Smith House, located in Feeding Hills, is the oldest existing house in Agawam (circa 1757) and was purchased by the AHA. The Fire House Museum on Elm Street, currently under renovation, houses antique fire trucks and apparatus on the ground floor and contains artifacts, memorabilia and exhibits from Agawam and neighboring areas on the second floor. Couch to 5K Ever wonder if you can complete a 5k race? You can! Get off the couch, out the door, and join us for the Couch to 5k program, a fun and social way to get in shape and accomplish your exercise goals. To participate, you must be able to walk 30 minutes and be willing to do additional workouts during the week. The end goal will be to run 3.1 miles at the end of 10weeks with an optional walk/run race to finish. This program is geared towards the beginner who would benefit from a training program full of group support. Starts, Saturday, April 6th, at 7AM at the YMCA of Greater Westfield. For more info, contact Cindy Agan, Fitness Director, at 413-568-8631 or email cagan@westfieldymca. org.

When it comes to 21st century multimedia platforms, “hyper local” is a term you hear a lot.
SALES PROFESSIONALS PROFESSIONALS SALES
It’s not a new idea. In fact, The Westfield News has been providing readers with “hyper local” news coverage of Westfield, Southwick, and the Hilltowns all along. Television, radio and regional newspapers only provide fleeting coverage of local issues you care about. TV stations and big newspaper publishers, after years of cutbacks and mergers, frankly aren’t able to provide in-depth coverage of smaller markets anymore.
