High school offering ASVAB Exam Gateway Regional High School will offer the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) Career Exploration Program to interested juniors and seniors on Tuesday, April 9. There is no cost to take the ASVAB. The ASVAB Program is a career exploration and planning program that includes a multiple-aptitude test battery,

To Advertise Call 413-562-4181 an interest inventory, and career planning tools designed to help students explore the world of work. It usually takes 3 hours to complete and will begin at 8 a.m. on April 9. This exam can help students identify their interests, skills and work-related values; match those with occupations; learn where and how to get information on different careers; and develop career decision-making skills. ASVAB was originally developed by the U.S. Department of Defense for military-related purposes, and students must take the ASVAB to enter a variety of military careers. Students wishing to join the military should take this test. However, the ASVAB Program has been redesigned so that all students, regardless of their plans after high school, can learn more about themselves and identify potentially satisfying careers. Students and parents are advised that test results will not be released to the military services, and testtakers are under no obliga-

tion to enter the military. Because the ASVAB is optional, students wishing to participate must sign up in Guidance by April 5. Interested students will receive a permission slip to bring home to get parental permission. Please contact the Gateway High School Guidance Office (685-1107) if you have any questions about this opportunity. Made in Westfield Exhibit at the Westfield Athenaeum Westfield Athenaeum Archivist Kate Deviny has mounted an exhibit titled Made in Westfield to display Westfield’s history of industry and manufacturing. It is open in the Jasper Rand Art museum during regular business hours. While not complete, the display reminds us of the wide variety of manufacturing that has been in Westfield since early times - the cotton thread mill of Richard Falley, brick making, ice cutting and powder mills as well as the bicycle, whip, paper, and cigar making that this town is famous for. Several current businesses have also loaned us materials so that you can learn about boroscopes, mirco-abrasive powders, grind-

Westfield Rain Barrel Program To help homeowners and the town manage their water supply and manage storm water Westfield is offering residents the opportunity to buy discounted rain barrels. Capturing and storing water at the home and the use of rain gardens are the two most effective ways to use rain water. Saving rain water helps homeowners save money. Rain water is free, and it’s an excellent water source for plants, gardens, lawns and any other nonpotable use. One tenth of an inch of rain on a 1000 square foot roof --about 25 minutes of moderate rainfall-- will fill a 60-gallon Rain Barrel. New England typically receives 17” of rain during the growing season from May through September. This provides enough water to fill 170 Rain Barrels. Droughts stress residential landscaping and town water facilities. In 2016, 168 communities in Massachusetts faced restrictions on nonessential outdoor water use 47% of the Cities and Towns in the state. There is no restriction on rainwater use. Westfield chose to work with the Great American Rain Barrel Co., a local food importing company that has been repurposing shipping drums into Rain Barrels since 1988. Last year 30% of Massachusetts Cities and Towns partnered with The Great American Rain Barrel Co, selling over 3000 barrels. Great American Rain Barrel Co has been approved vendors by the MASSDEP for the state since 2010. Barrels are being offered for $69. Barrels will be available for pick up on Tuesday, April 30th at the Westfield DPW, 28 Sackett St, from 2PM – 6PM. Deadline for purchase is April 23rd, Midnight. HOW WESTFIELD BECAME KNOWN AS THE “BASEBALL TOWN” Presented by Dan Genovese, Wednesday, April 24, 2019, First Congregational Church. Free and open to the public. Baseball is America’s Game and Westfield is known as a baseball town, a “badge of honor” that is earned, so how did it start? The game was not invented by Abner Doubleday, instead it evolved and 19th century Westfield helped to shape the game we love. This presentation will cover our earliest days of “prebaseball”, the pride and passion of our town teams and Westfield’s first two hometown MLB players. Presented by Dan Genovese, author and historian of Westfield baseball history, winner of the 2010 Westfield Historical Commission’s Annual Preservation Award and Captain and Re-Founder of the Westfield Wheelmen Base Ball Club. Brain Healthy Cooking for One at the Westfield Senior Center Join Armbrook Village Chef Christopher Marsh on Wednesday, April 24 at 10 a.m. at the Westfield Senior Center, 45 Noble Street, as he demonstrates how to prepare several tasty Mediterranean-style meals. Healthy foods reduce inflammation, regulate blood sugar, promote heart health, and may even delay the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease. Advance registration is necessary because space is lim-
