A memory chorus is a chance for people of all ages, especially seniors and their caregivers, to experience the therapeutic benefits of sing-
ing in a no-pressure group environment. This comes as the newest addition to the senior community’s Dementia Friendly Westfield Initiative.

Home Evaluation Offered The Westfield Council On Aging and the Occupational Therapy Department at Springfield College will once again collaborate to offer a limited number of older adults in Westfield a unique home assessment opportunity. Pairs of students determine the level of safety and convenience in the home of their assigned older participant by conducting a home visit and an interview. The students address problem areas and make recommendations in a written report that is reviewed by the class professor, Dr. Joan Simmons.
Participants receive a copy of the report so that they can implement any of the recommendations if they choose to do so. This is a wonderful opportunity for older adults with any mobility or sensory limitations to discover how they might function more easily and independently at home. If you would like to participate in this unique program or if you have questions, please call Tina Gorman or Fran Aguda at the Westfield Senior Center, 5626435. One Step at a Time – Dr. Lipoff shares Words of Hope for Breast Cancer Patients SPRINGFIELD — Dr. Danielle Lipoff’s passion for surgery started at the young age of 14. While in her first science class in high school she learned about glycolysis and her passion was struck. These are patients that you make an impression on their life and you actually do care for them in one of the scariest moments in their life.”
Supporting Patient Vulnerability When Dr. Lipoff meets her patients for the first time they are waiting in their robe - she presents what their visit will look like. She then asks the patient to get dressed and has them along with their family go to a private room to talk more in-depth about their breast cancer diagnosis and treatment plan. “The reason I have them get dressed is this is a very vulnerable moment in their life. SPRINGFIELD — Election Day is behind us and the Question 1 ballot initiative was voted down. Massachusetts hospitals stood together against this legislation because of the significant negative impacts it could have had on patients and their ability to access health care throughout the state. At Baystate Health we value our nurses and the role they play on teams whose care has been recognized nationally for its safety and quality. We recognize the ongoing challenges of the national nursing shortage and will continue our efforts to advance our innovative strategies to educate, recruit, and retain our talented nursing workforce. We are grateful for the support of our Baystate Health team members and community as we work each day to fulfill our mission to improve the health of the people in our communities every day, with quality and compassion.”

Scarecrow Fundraiser Contest Roxane Cotton, Business Development Director of Governors Center, presents a check to Sally English, Regional Director of Clubhouses. Governor's Center held it's first annual Scarecrow Contest to raise money for the Forum House and area businesses were asked to make a scarecrow and display it on the Governor's Center Lawn for a fee. During the Westfield on Weekends Pumpkin Festival, we held a people's choice award that the Westfield Senior Center won. Later in the month we held judging for the scarecrow's for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. The results were: 1st place went to Governor's Center for their Under the Sea, 2nd place to Dancer's Images Ballet Dancer and 3rd place to Western Mass Roller Derby's Skater. Governor's Center would like to thank all that helped to raise money for the Forum House.

both breasts. In addition to their cancer treatment, it gives them the cosmetic result they want and takes weight off their neck, back, and shoulders. “We want to give patients the best repair possible while treating the cancer so that when they look in the mirror they don’t say ‘I had breast cancer’ they say ‘this my body and I am comfortable in it.’ Being well trained in the different options is also important.”
“They all have an effect on my life.” Dr. Lipoff shares the best part of being a breast surgeon, “When my patients come back in either post-op or at their four month visit and their happy with their cosmetic results, their happy with their treatments and the care they were provided, that they are tolerating the treatments well. It is that follow up. I am not God. I am not a miracle worker. It is really that gratitude from the patient and that makes me happy to do what I do. It really is an honor to care for these women whether they realize it or not, they all have an effect on my life.”
It Takes a Village None of this work could be done without the efforts of a whole team. Dr. Lipoff gives a glimpse of the team she is proud to be a part of. “From the front desk to medical assistants to nurse navigators, schedulers, office staff, practice manager, it takes a village and they all do an exceptional job. It takes many men and women to help me care for these patients and that is just within the surgical oncology world. That doesn’t take into consideration the radiation oncology, medical oncology, radiology, pathology, plastic surgery, it is a huge well-oiled machine to provide the care patients need.” A Message for Recently Diagnosed Breast Cancer Patients “I validate your feelings. It is scary. A cancer diagnosis is scary and that is okay. You are allowed to be scared, you are allowed to breakdown. One step at a time. ”

When it comes to 21st century multimedia platforms, “hyper local” is a term you hear a lot. It’s not a new idea. In fact, The Westfield News has been providing readers with “hyper local” news coverage of Westfield, Southwick, and the Hilltowns all along. Television, radio and regional newpapers only provide fleeting coverage of local issues you care about. TV stations and big newspaper publishers, after years of cutbacks and mergers, frankly home delivery aren’t able to provide in-depth coverage of smaller markets anymore.
