Become an Elder Advocate WESTFIELD-A three-day
long term care ombudsman certification training will be held at Springfield Senior Services October 29-31. New recruits will be reimbursed for mileage expenses. Ombudsmen help ensure the quality of life for nursing and rest home residents. Volunteers are thoroughly trained to assist residents with benefits, rights and entitlements guaranteed under federal, state, and local laws. As a volunteer, ombudsmen may advocate for someone who has no one else as a voice or vehicle for action, and they empower residents with the tools for self-advocacy. Ombudsmen can make all the difference! The Ombudsman Program
is a federally mandated advocacy program for nursing home and rest home residents throughout the United States. In Massachusetts, there are 26 separate programs. Highland Valley Elder Services administers the program in Hampshire County and Westfield. We are in need of three new ombudsmen to cover Westfield facilities and two for Hampshire County. Please note: New volunteer recruits are required to interview with the program director and to complete a CORI background check prior to this training. For more information or if you have any questions, please call J. Mary (JM) Sorrell at (413) 586-2000, extension

Highend cars can have high-end prices for part replacements BY TOM AND RAY MAGLIOZZI Dear Tom and Ray: I have a 2004 Acura RL that had developed an intermittent headlight problem where one of the headlights would go off unexpectedly. The quick solution was to turn the lights off and then
immediately back on, and the faulty headlight also would come back on. My local Acura dealer's service department indicated that any one of three separate headlight components could be the culprit, and that it is not possible to test them separately. They advised replacing all three, since the labor to replace any

one of them individually would be the same. They gave a pre-repair estimate of about $1,100! I finally agreed, because it is not really safe to go around with a headlight that might fail at an inappropriate moment. The total bill was as follows: Inverter -$364, igniter -- $180, bulb -$178, labor (including remov-

With 7 percent sales tax, the total repair came to $1,113. Have I just been given a good hosing, or are these reasonable charges for this type of repair for this vehicle? -- Kyle RAY: Yes, and yes. TOM: First, I want to say that I'm impressed with their estimate -- off by only 13
bucks on a thousand-dollarplus job. That makes me think they've already done this repair a few times. RAY: And that's why they suggested replacing all three components, Kyle. I'm sure at some point in history, they replaced just the bulb for some customer, charged him $500, and then had to go back See Car Talk, Page 18

in and replace the inverter and igniter, and charge him another $900. TOM: That's not a phone call you want to make twice if you're a service manager. RAY: So yes, these are reasonable "dealership rate" charges for the work you had done. And yes, you also got hosed, because Acura designed a car that requires you to remove the front bumper in

order to change a headlight bulb. TOM: This is a classic hidden cost of owning a high-end car. When you bought the RL back in 2004, you probably paid dearly for the HID (highintensity-discharge) headlights. What you didn't know is that you'd have to pay dearly again when the bulb blew out. RAY: The salesman probably told you (if you even thought to ask) that the HID bulbs are designed to last the life of the car, so you wouldn't

RAY: The air suspension is a comfy touch. It should last the life of the car. But how many thousands will it cost when it breaks, compared with a set of shocks? TOM: And those 22-inch alloy wheels look sharp. But when you dent one on a pothole, how long are you going to cry when they tell you a replacement wheel costs
$800? RAY: So, we're sorry you had to pay so dearly to get your headlight back, Kyle. But I don't think it's the dealer's fault. It's a bit of shortsighted engineering by Acura, combined with the price of advanced technology. Auto repairs can be costly! Pets which is potentially toxic for dogs. It's also an ideal time to practice obedience commands with your fourlegged friends, as crowds of unfamiliar people, costumes and lots of open doors can create temptations too hard to resist. To include your furry family members while still keeping them safe during the fun, follow this advice from the pet experts at PetSmart: Trick-or-treating together Before hitting the streets, make sure your dog is socialized around kids, adults and other animals. Bring water and treats such as crunchy Blue Buffalo Boo Bars to reward your dog for good behavior and reduce the desire to go for kids' candy. Increase nighttime visibility with LED leashes, collars or harnesses, or look for the light-up Halloween outfits available at PetSmart this year. Pawsitively good party manners Before guests arrive, practice "leave it" or a similar command. This is useful to help pets avoid candy or food they might encounter on the ground. Trainers can help you get it down right. Establish a rule that guests don't feed the dog - candy or human food. A new interactive toy or long-lasting rawhide may keep your pup busy and out of temptation's way. Many ingredients commonly found in Halloween candy can be harmful to your pet. For example, xylitol, found in gum and candy can cause dangerously low blood sugar

Continued from Page 15 or liver disease in dogs. Chocolate can create a range of symptoms, from vomiting to abnormal heart rhythm to death. Even snacks that are healthy for humans, such as raisins can cause a toxic reaction. Prevent your dog from running out an open door by working on a "stay" command. PetSmart's expert trainer Debbie McKnight explains how to teach this trick: Ask your dog to sit, and praise him when he obeys. While your dog is sitting, say "stay" and place your hand flat with your palm facing the dog. Wait 2-3 seconds then give your dog a treat. You can increase the time he stays by a couple of seconds every three repetitions, working up to 30 seconds. If you aren't confident about your dog's abilities, keep him on a leash while the doorbell is ringing. Costume comfort and
safety A costume should never constrain or bother your pet. If your pet isn't comfortable, try a strap-on costume that attaches loosely with snaps or around the pet, or find other ways to look festive such as Pet Expressions, available in the PetSmart grooming salon. Once a costume fits properly, make sure your pet won't trip on anything like a cape or ribbon. Check for little parts within chewing distance and keep identification tags on collars. Throughout the evening, watch your pet and make adjustments as needed. You may need to cut or remove portions of the costume to increase a pet's comfort. The most important part of the evening is your pet's safety. For more tips on pet safety, as well as costumes and events, visit your local PetSmart or www.PetSmart. com/halloween.
