This period of mass relocation of children in the United States is widely recognized as the beginning of documented foster care in America. Please join us in the Lang Auditorium for an interesting evening. Books will be available for purchase at the event. For more information, please contact the library at 413-562-0716.

Get crafty this Halloween (Family Features) Craft, cook or scare up some truly creative treats and decorations this Halloween. New glow-inthe-dark paints and trendy glow sticks have made setting a scary mood simple. So, get started creating the right look for your home - inside and out. Whether you love creating a little glitz and glamour or something frightening and fun, the experts at the Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores have come with ideas and inspirations for making this Halloween your best one yet. Frightful Fun: Lead trickor-treaters to their doom or, at least, your front door by lining the sidewalks with glowing rocks. Paint smooth river rocks with glow-in-the-dark spray paint. Once dry, use black paint and a brush to write scary words or draw
silly designs on the rocks. Decorate Your Heart Out: Use black glass paint to turn a thrift store cake stand into a pedestal for your scariest Halloween decorations. Pile plastic hearts or skulls in the middle and cover with a clear glass cloche. Decorated cupcakes or a cakepop display would also work well under glass. See Crafty, Page 14

to a Halloween party - and the whole family can help carve them. To get more carving ideas and instructions, visit www.watermelon. org. Watermelons are a healthy addition to any Halloween party. They're the lycopene leader among fresh produce, are an excellent source of vitamins A and C, and contain 6 percent of the daily value for vitamin B6 - all of which boost your immune system. Carving Tips Have the watermelon at room temperature when you carve. The cuts will be easier to make. You can chill the watermelon in the refrigerator after cutting and before serving. After you've drawn the design on the rind, insert toothpicks in key places to use as guides for your cuts. Use a sharp knife with a pointed tip - the sharper the knife, the easier and cleaner the cuts will be. When attaching cut pieces on the watermelon to make your design, use round toothpicks or skewers. Flat toothpicks will often break due to the weight of the piece or the thickness of the rind. Tiki Mask Table Decoration Ingredients 1 oblong seedless watermelon Pencil or green dry erase marker Melon baller Paring and kitchen knives Spoon Channel knife Toothpick Preparation Slice 1/4 inch off end of watermelon to provide a stable base. Use pencil to draw the face, making adjustments in scale to your particular watermelon. Use melon baller to scoop out nostrils; use small paring knife to clean up edges. Next use paring knife to cut out the inside mouth area,

leaving room for the teeth. Next cut individual teeth, using the same small paring knife, and use a spoon to dig out a large area of flesh for the mouth cavity. Next carve out eyes, digging a deep cavity in each, for drama. Use a channel knife to carve details. Use some carved out pieces to cut a "bone" decoration for top of head, and attach with a toothpick.

Keeping little teeth healthy this Halloween (Family Features) Halloween is a fun time of year filled with costumes, parties and sweet treats. But, sometimes parents worry that all those sugary treats can lead to cavities and poor dental health. The good news: It's not what children eat, but how often, and candy can be OK if children and parents are conscientious. "No food is really bad for children's teeth who do not snack often," said Dr. Warren Brill, president of the American See Little Teeth, Page 18

Continued from Page 15 Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD). "In fact, many parents may not realize that children's dental health depends less on what they eat and more on how often they eat it." All types of sugars, and the foods that contain them, can play a role in tooth decay. About 90 percent of all foods contain sugars or starches that enable bacteria in dental plaque to produce acids. This attack by bacterial acid, lasting 20 minutes or more, can lead to loss of tooth structure and to cavities. So, a child who licks a piece of hard candy every few minutes to make it last longer, or slowly
sips a sugared drink while studying, is flirting with a higher risk of tooth decay. Such long-lasting snacks create an acid attack on teeth for the entire time they are in the mouth. "Halloween should be fun, and sweets can be part of that fun," said Brill. "But, it is important for parents and caregivers to remember that moderation is the key in keeping children, and their mouths, healthy." Below are a few simple ways the AAPD suggests will help keep little mouths healthy this Halloween: Snack in moderation, no more than three times a day. A food with sugar or starch is safer for teeth if it

Parents should supervise the brushing for school-age children until they are seven to eight years of age (about the same time they can tie their own shoelaces or write in cursive). Worn-out hinges can make a car think the door is open BY TOM AND RAY MAGLIOZZI Dear Tom and Ray: I have a 1996 Ford Windstar in perfect condition that was driven for years by a little old lady. She actually was from Pasadena, California. The problem is the occasional buzzing. It is like I left a door open while the engine is running. The van will be running fine, with no problems, except the buzzer is buzzing, the interior light is on and a picture of the van is lit up on the dash in
red with a door open. Once the van reaches 15 mph, everything goes back to normal -until I slow to under 15 mph, at which point the buzzing starts again. Can you help with this annoyance? I'm going nuts. -Danny RAY: You say the car acts as if a door is open when it's not, Danny. TOM: Well, it may be that a door actually is open. RAY: Not fully open -- as in, you make a left turn and you roll out of the car and end up at
the curb. But not fully closed, either. TOM: I feel fortunate in saying that I haven't seen a 1996 Windstar in the shop recently, but there's either a switch in the doorjamb that gets pressed when the door is fully closed, or on some cars the door latch also acts as the switch. RAY: And unless that switch is fully engaged, the buzzer is going to come on, along with the dome light and dashboard warning. TOM: My guess is that the hinges on one of your doors are worn out and the door isn't closing correctly. That wouldn't be a surprise on a car that's approaching the two-decade mark. RAY: If I had to guess, I'd try the driver's door first. Why? Because it's the door that gets opened and closed the most over the life of the vehicle. TOM: You can try this experiment: Next time the buzzer goes off, roll down the window and get your whole arm on the outside of the door. Then pull the door closed as hard as you can. If you can get the buzzing to stop when you pull, and start again when you release the pressure, you've found the offending door. RAY: If that experiment doesn't work, you'll have to engage an able-bodied assistant to help you push harder. While the buzzer is sounding, have your assistant stand outside the car and push on the door with both hands. TOM: If that stops the buzzing, have that assistant run alongside the vehicle for the
