Museum Passes Available The Huntington Public Library has new museum passes available for patrons to borrow that were purchased by the Friends of the Huntington Public Library. They are the Amelia Park Children’s Museum (discounted), The Children’s Museum at Holyoke, The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art, The Norman Rockwell Museum (discounted), Old Sturbridge Village (discounted), and the Springfield Museums. The Friends were able to purchase these passes with monies raised through their annual Used Book Sale and Calendar Raffle. The library also has free passes to the Clark Art Museum, the Smith College Museum of Art, the Berkshire Museum, The USS Constitution Museum, and a discounted pass to Mystic Aquarium.

Westfield Creative Arts Classes Now Enrolling Westfield Creative Arts (WCA), a program of Westfield on Weekends Inc. (WOW), is located in the heart of downtown Westfield at the Rinnova Building at 105 Elm Street. Enrollment for fall creative arts classes is currently underway. Adult classes in acrylic painting, oil painting, watercolor painting, chair caning, knitting, crocheting, photography and creative writing are enrolling students and classes will start within the next several weeks. You may join an existing class and your fee will be prorated to the amount of classes you are able to attend or wait for a new section to begin. Classes run for 4, 6 or 8 weeks depending on the class in our well lit centrally located gallery.

‘Strength in Numbers: A Falls Prevention Program’ Beginning in October, the Westfield Senior Center, 45 Noble Street, will once again be the host site for a sixweek workshop series on falls prevention for older adults. Huntington Artist Featured in October Solo Show at the Westhampton Public Library Steve Hamlin, wildlife artist and resident of Huntington MA, will be the featured artist at the Westhampton Public Library for the month of October. The show will include watercolors and drawings from travels throughout New England and across much of the US. There will be an opening reception on Saturday, October 7, from 1-3pm. The reception will also serve as a release party for Hamlin’s newly published adult coloring book, Birds of Eastern North America. On Sunday, October 15, Hamlin will participate in the Westhampton Library’s Fall Festival by offering a demonstration of his wildlife art techniques from about noon to 4:00. Hamlin’s watercolors and drawings have been included in many regional, national and international shows, garnering numerous awards. Hamlin was named

Master Artist member of the Bennington Collective earlier this year, mostly on his record of six consecutive acceptances to the prestigious Art of the Animal Kingdom show at the Bennington Center for the Arts from 2010 until its final edition in 2015. Artist Open House The Huntington Public Library will be having an Artist Open House on Saturday, October 7th from 12-2 PM. Mackenzie Lagoy lives in Greenfield and attends Frontier Regional High School. She has been drawing her whole life but became more serious about her art in middle school. She is primarily a painter and likes to use acrylic paint. When she draws she likes to use charcoal, graphite, oil pastels and ink. Most of Mackenzie’s art deals with human emotion and the way we feel things. Light refreshments will be served during the Open House.

Ombudsmen assist and empower residents with the tools for self-advocacy and they may make all the difference! The Ombudsman Program is a federally mandated advocacy program for nursing home and rest home residents throughout the United States. Highland Valley administers the program in Hampshire County and Westfield. We are in need of two new ombudsmen to cover Westfield facilities and three for Hampshire County. VFW Post 872 Scholarship Contests Southwick VFW Post 872 in Southwick is sponsoring several contests for students, teachers, and first responders. The Patriots Pen Essay Contest is for students in grades 6-8 and provides for students in these grades to compete for $54,500 in cash prizes. The Voice of Democracy Contest is for students in grades 9-12 where they compete for $154,000 in scholarships and incentives with the top scholarship awarded at the national level being $30,000. The Citizenship Education Teacher Award is for teachers in all grades nominated by their peers, which recognizes their contributions as educators who instill a sense of patriotism, duty, and service. Winners selected at the national level are awarded cash prizes for themselves and for their school, along with recognition at the VFW National Convention. The VFW Scout of the Year Award is a scholarship competition for those Boy or Girl Scouts ages 15-18 who have attained the rank of Eagle Scout, Gold Award, or Sea Scout Quartermaster, are enrolled in High School and are active within their troop. First Place at the national level awards a $5,000 scholarship, second place $3,000, and third place $1,000.
