North Hall Arts Festival announces 2017 season The North Hall Arts Festival in Huntington, Mass. announces its 2017 season with twelve public events from late May through September. Presented by the North Hall Association, the performance series is made possible by the Westfield News Group and the Daily Hampshire Gazette, along with support from the arts councils of Chester, Huntington, Montgomery, Russell, Westhampton, and Worthington. In September, the popular area piano-clarinet duo Jerry Noble and Bob Sparkman (jazz-swing) returns to North Hall on September 10, Sunday at 2 pm. The Old Country Road Band ends the season with old-time vintage country and bluegrass on Sunday, September 17 at 2 p.m. Events include two free open-mic music jams, art exhibits, and meet-the-artist receptions. Some events are free or by donation. Admission

Southwick Cultural Council to sponsor bus trip to New York Botanical Gadens Patricia McMahon, Chair, of the Southwick Cultural Council (SCC), announced that the commission will sponsor a bus trip to the New York Botanical Gardens on Sunday, September 17th. to see a special exhibit by glass artist Dale Chihuly. CHIHULY showcases more than 20 glass work installations and includes drawings and early works in a sensory-filled exhibition. The Garden’s dramatic vistas become a living canvas for work created specifically for the botanical garden showcasing Chihuly’s signature organic shapes in brilliant colors. This is the first exhibit of Chihuly’s work in New York in 10 years.

Cost for the trip is $78.00 for adults and $75.00 for seniors. The bus will leave the Southwick Town Hall at 454 College Highway at 8:00 am, and will depart from the New York Botanical Gardens at 4:00 pm. On September 13th the Westfield Athenaeum hosts a speaker series on North American Birds of Prey. Birds of prey are also known as raptors, and they are hunting birds characterized by hooked beaks and powerful grabbing feet armed with sharp talons (the word raptor comes from a Latin word that means “to seize”). Raptors can also boast the best eyesight and the sharpest hearing in the animal kingdom. Raptors include hawks, falcons and owls, and this presentation, which incorporates 5-6 live birds of prey gives an overview of these different categories. The program is designed to explain predation, the birds’ place at the top of the food web, their different hunting adaptations and their status in a rapidly changing world. Because many birds of prey are declining in number, this presentation also features one or more of the endangered raptors that WING MASTERS cares for, and explains why these species face an uncertain future. ‘Cook Smart, Eat Well’ Series Coming to the Westfield Senior Center in September Beginning in September, the Westfield Senior Center, 45 Noble Street, will be the host site for a four-week cooking demonstration series for older adults. The sessions are

All participants will have the opportunity to tastetest, take home the recipes, and ask questions about healthy cooking and meal preparation. ‘Cornelia Hancock: Civil War Nurse’ On Wednesday, September 16th at 7:00 PM at the NCCHP Museum at 42 Water St. in Granville, historian Carolyn Ivanoff, takes us back in time with excerpts from letters Cornelia Hancock wrote to her family. This is a remarkable story about a remarkable person. As well known as Clara Barton during the war years, this 23 year old never publicized her contributions, yet was revered by the men of the Army of the Potomac. She describes events of the Civil War from the perspective of the doctors and nurses who tended the wounded, sick and dying soldiers in makeshift hospitals. It is a fascinating, intriguing and heroic story of dedication in the darkest hours of the war. Ivanoff, assistant principal at Shelton Intermediate School in Shelton, CT., is a versatile educator with over 25 years in the industry. She is a past recipient of the Civil War Preservation Trust’s Teacher of the Year award and assisted in the development of the Civil War Trust’s national Civil War curriculum. YMCA of Greater Westfield to hold golf tournament to support cancer survivors The YMCA of Greater Westfield is hosting a golf tournament to benefit LiveSTRONG at the YMCA. The tournament will take place at the Worthington Golf Club on Saturday, September 16, 2017. This is a four person scramble format. Registration begins at 10AM with and shotgun start at 11:00AM. Entry fee is $55.00

per golfer for walkers and $65.00 per golfer with cart. The fee includes 9 holes of golf, attendee gift and lunch. The Huntington Public Library will host Minstrel Storyteller Mary Jo Maichack in a participatory family program especially recommended for children ages 4 and older with their caregivers, as well as all other ages. “Fairy House Craft” is a delightful “make and take” workshop that will take place on Monday, September 25th from 6-7 P.M. Families will receive natural woodland materials such as acorns, twigs, bark, and pine cones and use glue and imagination to create tiny houses or furniture for fairies in small containers. Westfield Senior Citizen Property Tax Work-Off Applications Available Applications are now available for those who are eligible for Westfield’s Senior Citizen Property Tax WorkOff Program. The program is limited to one $500 work-off per household. Applicants must be the property owner of record or spouse, a resident of Westfield, 60 years of age or older, and willing to work approximately two hours per week from October through June. Volunteer opportunities include working in the public schools as greeters, library assistants, or reading tutors; clerical work within the offices of various City departments; and staff assistance at the Animal Shelter. Placement at a particular site will be determined by matching the skills, talents, and interests of the applicant with the requests of the various City departments. Income guidelines are $36,180 for a single household and $48,720 for a couple, including Social Security income. Completed applications, along with all required documentation, must be submitted in person to Tina Gorman by 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 28, 2017. No applications will be accepted after that date. The selection of participants will be by lottery and priority will be given to those who have not yet participated in the program.
