AMIR ELSAFFAR

and Two Rivers Ensemble

Friday, September 28 8:00PM • Bowker Auditorium

Trumpeter Amir ElSaffar has created a singular approach to combining aspects of Arabic music with American jazz, extending the boundaries of each tradition. By mixing ornaments and microtones from Middle Eastern music with melodies and harmonies from the West, his ensemble creates sinuous rhythms that escalate into a group intensity that is thrilling to hear. ElSaffar’s unique fusion has won him accolades from DownBeat magazine and rowdy ovations at the Newport Jazz Festival. General Admission: $25; Five College Students & Youth 17 and Under: $10; Under40TIX $15

Westfield Cultural Council Call for Members The WCC is currently seeking residents with an interest in supporting diverse cultural events and programming within Westfield to serve on the Council beginning in late 2018. This allvolunteer organization is appointed by the mayor and is funded in part by the Massachusetts Cultural Council. Council members make decisions on awarding annual grants, and take part in promoting the arts and humanities in town. In FY18, the council awarded nearly $20,000 in grants to support community-wide programming in a range of creative fields, spanning the natural sciences to fine arts. A list of past grantees and guidelines can be found at https://www. mass-culture.org/westfield. The next grant cycle will open in fall 2018, at which time, individuals, nonprofits, unincorporated organizations, public schools, and religious organizations are invited to apply for funds to assist in producing or continuing arts, humanities, or science centered programs that take place within Westfield city limits. Council members will be present at this regular meeting to hold a discussion and answer questions, as well as to hear feedback from the community on what they would like to see funding allocated for. The council takes feedback from the public on a yearly basis to ensure grant money is given to projects that benefit the public good.

“Abraham and Mary Lincoln: The Long and the Short of It” on Sunday, September 16th at 2 p.m. in the auditorium at the Southwick Town Hall located at 454 College Highway in Southwick. Stephen and Sharon Wood will present a living history program set in 1861. Having only recently arrived in Washington, the Lincolns are seen spending some quiet time together, reminiscing about the distinctly different paths that led each of them to Springfield, Illinois, where they met, married and began their family. Despite their different backgrounds, they shared strong political ambitions and worked together to secure Lincoln’s election to the Presidency. The presentation will be followed by an out-of-character questionand-answer session. This program is made possible through a grant from the Southwick Cultural Council, a local agency, supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a State agency. Travel expenses for the performers were provided by the Friends of the Southwick

Public Library.
