in supporting diverse cultural events and programming within Westfield to serve on the Council beginning in late 2018. This all-volunteer organization is appointed by the mayor and is funded in part by the Massachusetts Cultural Council. Council members make decisions on awarding annual grants, and take part in promoting the arts and humanities in town. In FY18, the council awarded nearly $20,000 in grants to support communitywide programming in a range of creative fields, spanning the natural sciences to fine arts. A list of past grantees and guidelines can be found at https://www.mass-culture. org/westfield. The next grant cycle will open in fall 2018, at which time, individuals, nonprofits, unincorporated organizations, public schools, and religious organizations are invited to apply for funds to assist in producing or continuing arts, humanities, or science centered programs that take place within Westfield city limits. Council members will be present at this regular meeting to hold a discussion and answer questions, as well as to hear feedback from the community on what they would like to see funding allocated for. The council takes feedback from the public on a yearly basis to ensure grant money is given to projects that benefit the public good.

“Source to Sea” Cleanup of the Westfield River Volunteers along the Westfield River and its streams will join cleanup crews across four states on Saturday, September 23 according to Mark Damon, coordinator for the Westfield River Watershed Association. The WRWA is a part of the Connecticut River Conservancy which sponsors the annual Source to Sea Cleanup, a volunteer network taking care of the Connecticut River and its tributaries. Damon sports a bright blue tee shirt with the CRC logo which proudly proclaims: “Hard Work. Real Fun. True Impact.” WRWA encourages people to come and join them for the morning on Saturday, September 22. Volunteers for the Fall 2018 Westfield River cleanup will gather at one of two locations by 9:00 a.m., meeting in Westfield in the public parking lot at the end of Meadow Street near the green bridge or in Agawam at the Pynchon Point parking lot near the South End bridge circle on River Road. Hyper • Local

When it comes to 21st century multimedia platforms, “hyper local” is a term you hear a lot. It’s not a new idea. In fact, The Westfield News has been providing readers with “hyper local” news coverage of Westfield, Southwick, and the Hilltowns all along. Television, radio and regional newspapers only provide fleeting coverage of local issues you care about. TV stations and big newspaper publishers, after years of cutbacks and mergers, frankly aren’t able to provide in-depth home delivery still only... coverage of smaller markets anymore.
