Lawn care tips for Fall (Family Features) Taking time in the fall to prepare your lawn for the colder months ahead will pay dividends come spring and allow you to enjoy lusher, greener grass when temperatures rise again. Fertilizing Providing nutrients to your lawn before cold weather strikes is good for strengthening roots and increasing the nutrients stored for an earlier spring green. While the top growth of grass stops, grass plants are storing nutrients and energy for the following season. To determine the best ratio of fertilizer for the soil in your yard, you should utilize a soil test. Otherwise, look for fertilizer with a nitrogen-phosphatepotassium (NPK) ratio of 3:1:2 or 4:1:2. When applying the fertilizer, make sure that you follow the application instructions and rate information on the package and use a calibrated spreader to apply the correct amount. It is also a good rule to apply the fertilizer in the fall about 2-3 weeks before the ground freezes so the plant can start to take up some of the nutrients. Instead of pacing the yard

with a push spreader, consider a tow-behind spreader attached to your riding lawn mower or garden tractor. An attachment, such as a pull-type spin spreader from John Deere, can quickly distribute fertilizer evenly across your yard. Aerating Aerating, the process of removing plugs of soil and thatch from the lawn, is ideal in cooler months. It encourages deep rooting, improves water and nutrient penetration, and promotes growth of beneficial soil microorganisms. There are a variety of techniques you can use to penetrate the soil such as spiked shoes or spray-on liquids, but to most effectively aerate soil, attach a dethatcher, or a plug aerator behind a riding mower or tractor to remove plugs of soil from two to three inches deep. Mulching If you prefer not to rake or bag grass or leaves, mulching with a mower is an ideal alternative. Be sure to mulch leaves only when they are dry to avoid damp and wet leaves clumping or building up under mower decks. Remember that grass needs

sunlight in the fall to help store food for winter, so don’t wait until your lawn is completely matted down with leaves to mulch. A thin layer of mulched leaves is ideal and helps add nutrients to the soil, reducing the need for fertilizer. Selecting the right mower with mulching attachments or features can save a great deal of time and help ensure a consistent layer of mulch across the yard. For example, John Deere 100-Series lawn tractors have three-in-one mowing decks, which allow you to choose to

mulch, bag or allow side-discharge. Composting Creating a compost pile allows you to turn organic material into rich soil. The fall season is a good time to create a compost pile with decaying yard matter, such as vegetables, grass clippings and leaves, which can provide nutrient-rich soil for spring planting. For best results, alternate layers of “brown,” or high carbon materials, with grass clippings. Using a rear bagger with your lawn mower or tractor will help

make collecting grass clippings a breeze, and adding to your compost pile is as simple as backing up to the spot and unloading. Rays of Hope is just one month away SPRINGFIELD – This year’s 21st annual Rays of Hope – A Walk Toward the Cure of Breast Cancer is less than one month away on Sunday, Oct. 19. In order to leave yourself enough time for your fundraising efforts, walkers and team captains should be out there pounding the pavement for their teams just like Phyllis Dupre has already been doing for the past few weeks. “I have some very generous sponsors and begin to call on them as early as August each year for their continued financial support,” said Dupre, a nine-year breast cancer survivor from Springfield. Dupre’s team, Bosom Buddies – Fight Like A Girl, has grown to some 40 members strong over the years and continues to expand through word-of-mouth, said the team captain. “Breast cancer isn’t something that happens only during Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. It strikes women and men 365 days a year. So, whether forming your own team, joining another, or just walking on your own, it’s never too early

to begin recruiting team members or soliciting sponsors as part of your fundraising effort for the walk and run,” said Michelle Shattuck, event chair, Rays of Hope. Participants can register now for both the walk and run online at baystatehealth. org/raysofhope, where they can also create their own personal webpage to assist them in their fundraising efforts. Since its inception in Springfield in 1994 by Lucy Giuggio Carvalho, Rays of Hope, the most successful fundraising walk and run in western Massachusetts for breast cancer, has grown from 500 participants raising $50,000 to some 24,000 walkers and runners in an expanded event that includes a second walk in Greenfield, as well as this year’s 5th annual Run Toward the Cure 8K in Springfield. This year’s annual walk events are presented by Health New England. As in past years, the Springfield walk with some 600 teams – either a two- or five-mile route – and run begin at Temple Beth El on Dickinson Street where registration is set for 9 a.m. The walk in Greenfield – either a

two- or three-mile route – begins at Energy Park on Miles Street with registration at 10 a.m. In Springfield, the run begins at 10:15 a.m. followed by walkers at 10:30 a.m. Greenfield’s walk steps off at noon. The 5th Annual Run Toward the Cure 8K continues this year with the help of Fast Feet in West Springfield and Westfield. While considered a “fun run,” there will be a time clock at the finish line for runners who want to record what may be their “personal best.” Since 1994, Rays of Hope has raised over $11.8 million, with all monies remaining local and administered by the Baystate Health Foundation to assist patients and their families affected by breast cancer. Over the years, funds have supported the Rays of Hope Center for Breast Cancer Research, as well as treatment, breast health outreach and education, and the purchase of
state-of-the art equipment through the Baystate Health Breast Network, including Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, Baystate Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield, Baystate Mary Lane Hospital in Ware, and various community projects throughout western Massachusetts. Those who want to support the Rays of Hope, but are unable to walk due to other commitments, can participate in the 10,000 Steps Toward A Cure program. Participants receive a pedometer to keep track of their steps throughout the month of October, while raising donations similar to other walkers. This year’s Rays of Hope major sponsors are Health New England, Gale Toyota, Baystate Breast & Wellness Center, Baystate Breast Specialists, Chicopee Savings Charitable Foundation, Kinsley Power Systems, Radiology & Imaging, and
Zasco Productions. A listing of all sponsors can be found on the Rays of Hope website. For more information about this year’s Rays of Hope Walk and 8K Run, held rain or shine, call 413-794-8001 or visit baystatehealth.org/ raysofhope.

Reassurance on Enterovirus SPRINGFIELD, Sep. 18--Similar to trends now being seen across the country, Baystate Children’s Hospital has begun to see an increase in young patients visiting the emergency room with a respiratory illness, which may be related to the enterovirus. While most of these children are treated and soon discharged home from the Emergency Department, a small number of children are being admitted to the hospital. Most of those children have been going home within a day or two, and the cases being seen thus far at Baystate are generally less severe than those observed in the Midwest. “While increased concern exists for some children with predisposing conditions such as asthma, the majority of these infections will not be serious, and will require only treatment of the symptoms,” said Dr. Michael Klatte of the Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at Baystate Children’s Hospital. The strain thought to be causing the current outbreak, Enterovirus D68 (EV-D68), can be traced back to the 1960s, when it was first identified in California in 1962. However, its occurrence in the United States has been relatively rare since the initial outbreak (with only 79 confirmed cases reported by the CDC since 2009), and this is the first widespread out-
break we have seen in our country due to the EV-D68 strain. Enterovirus D68 has now spread to 18 states in the Midwest and East Coast with 153 confirmed cases as of Sept. 18. While no cases have been reported in Massachusetts, the state Department of Public Health has said “it is likely that cases will be seen here.” Laboratory tests obtained from young hospitalized patients from our community who are suspected of having the EV-D68 infection have been sent to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. The Department of Public Health in turn sends them on to the Centers for Disease Control for confirmation. The current turnaround time until notification is between 7-10 days. Enteroviruses mainly affect the respiratory system and gastrointestinal tract, causing symptoms such as fever, upper respiratory symptoms, including cough, runny nose, and nasal congestion, as well as diarrhea and stomach pain. Depending on the specific type of enterovirus that a child is infected with, rashes (including hand, foot, and mouth disease), conjunctivitis (redness of the whites of the eyes), and neurologic illnesses such as aseptic meningitis and encephalitis may be seen. EV-D68 appears to cause symptoms primarily affecting
the airways, including wheezing, increased difficulty breathing, and the need for more oxygen. “Given these symptoms, EV-D68 is more of a concern for children who have underlying respiratory issues, or for premature babies with respiratory airway difficulties, which would make them more predisposed to

Suggestions for a 'fun' car BY TOM AND RAY MAGLIOZZI Dear Tom and Ray: I am newly retired. I have always purchased the cheapest car sold by each brand (Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla). I now find myself with enough money to purchase a more upscale, fun car for the first time in my life. I love the Miata, but my back just won't take the lack of height of the sports car. I am thinking of a slightly used upscale car like the Lexus ES. But I know I'll be upset with the high cost of repairs. Help me find my first fun car. -- Lana TOM: You're pulling in two different directions here, Lana. RAY: On the one hand, you want something fun. You're tired of driving a boring automotive appliance. TOM: On the other hand, automotive appliances are nice and reliable! RAY: So we'll give you two

different kinds of suggestions. TOM: A used Lexus is certainly a fine choice. While "fun" wouldn't be the first word I associate with Lexus, it is quiet, comfortable and reliable. RAY: You will pay more for repairs, because the coffee is better and the carpet is thicker in the Lexus waiting room. So you have to be prepared for that. TOM: As an alternative, instead of an entry-level luxury car, we often recommend that people get a completely decked-out version of a nonluxury car.
RAY: For instance, instead of a Lexus ES350, you could get a loaded Toyota Camry XLE (on which the Lexus is based). You'd save some money on the purchase price, and you'd save money on repairs. When the Camry is loaded to the gills, the cars are very comparable -- and comparably equipped. TOM: So one suggestion would be to look at a fully loaded Camry, Accord, Altima or any other car you like from a non-luxury manufacturer. But get every option you could possibly want on it to make it luxurious to you.
A
M
RAY: If we disregard your concerns about repair costs and just focus on "fun," then, Lana, I see you in a British Racing Green Mini Cooper convertible. TOM: That's as much fun to drive as the Miata, but it's more than just a few inches off the ground. If you're of a certain age and you get a Miata, you also have to get the optional winch to lift you out of the driver's seat. RAY: The Mini is reasonably upscale. You can get it with leather seats, a navigation system, heated seats and all that. And it'll cost you about 35K brand-new. TOM: Chances are, it won't be as reliable as your Civics and Corollas have been. But it's got a four-year, 48,000mile warranty, so you can drive it trouble-free for four years, and then decide if you

love it enough to keep it for the long haul. RAY: Or if you've had enough "fun" and are ready to go back to a Civic. Enjoy whatever you get, Lana. *** What is the most costeffective way to buy a car? Grill your way into fall Liberty Burgers (Family Features) The weather is getting cooler, but that doesn't mean grilling season has to burn out. In fact, according to the Hearth, Patio and Barbecue Association, 60 percent of grillers are now cooking outdoors year-round, so fall grilling season is just heating up. With the new season come new opportunities to fire up the grill, from tailgating at football games to harvest parties around bonfires. Burgers remain one of the most popular foods to grill, so there's no better time to perfect your burger grilling skills with these tips from Kalamazoo Outdoor Gourmet grill master Russ Faulk:
The beef The first step to the perfect burger is selecting the right beef. To get the right balance of texture, flavor and juiciness, go with an 85 percent lean mixture. Ground beef from the butcher's case is recommended over pre-packaged options. For the freshest flavor, avoid ground beef with any signs of gray or brown color. Always
check the underside of the meat before purchasing.
The patties Form 1/3-pound to 1/2pound patties, making them about three-fourths of an inch thick and roughly threefourths of an inch larger in diameter than the buns. Dimple the middle of each patty so it's thinner in the center than at the edges. The indent will rise up and flatten out when grilled. Finally, brush the patties with olive oil and season with salt - both will help in creating a browned exterior crust.
Prepping the grill Heat up two temperature zones: one hot fire at 600 degrees for the burgers and another 400-degree area for toasting the buns. The dry heat of a charcoal fire delivers the best crust on the outside of the burger. Gas fire also works, if it's hot enough. Certain grills, such as the Kalamazoo Outdoor Gourmet Hybrid Fire Grill, allow for cooking with any combination of gas, charcoal or wood.
The grilling

Place the burgers over the hottest part of the grill for about four minutes. Add slices of red onions to the grill to caramelize them at this time. Flip the burgers and cook for another four minutes. Add cheese to the top of the patties and place the onions on top of the burger. When the burgers are almost done, lightly toast the buns directly on the cooler zone of the grill grate or on the warming rack for about 20-30 seconds. Remove everything from the grill, and assemble your burgers.

Hyper • Local
When it comes to 21st century multimedia platforms, “hyper local” is a term you hear a lot. It’s not a new idea. In fact, The Westfield News has been providing readers with “hyper local” news coverage of Westfield, Southwick, and the Hilltowns all along. Television, radio and regional newspapers only provide fleeting coverage of local issues you care about. TV stations and big newspaper publishers, after years of cutbacks and mergers, frankly aren’t able to provide in-depth coverage of smaller markets anymore. But, day in and day out, The Westfield News provides consistant coverage of the stories you need to know about, that are important to your city, town, neighborhood and home.
