Walkers take to the streets to prevent suicide SPRINGFIELD – More than 2,000 people from throughout Springfield and surrounding towns are expected to participate in the upcoming Out of the Darkness Community Walk on Sunday, September 21. The fundraising walk supports the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP, afsp.org) by helping to support local and national suicide prevention and awareness programs to reduce the annual rate of suicide by 20 percent by 2025. The Springfield Out of the Darkness Walk is one of more than 360 Out of the Darkness Community Walks (www.outofthedarkness.org) being held this fall nationwide. The walks are expected to unite more than 100,000 walkers nationally and raise more than $12 million for suicide prevention efforts. “Much more needs to be done to prevent suicide. Yet, suicide and the underlying mental disorders that can sometimes lead to suicide continue to be surrounded by misinformation and stigma,” said Cheryl Ronzoni, Western MA Chapter Associate Area Director. “This walk is about reducing that stigma, raising awareness and raising needed funds for research and local prevention programs.” The Springfield community walk will begin at the

MassMutual Center in downtown Springfield at 8:30am (registration) and end at the MassMutual Center at approximately 12:00pm. The Walk route will be along the Springfield riverfront on Columbus Avenue. According to AFSP, close to 700,000 people will make a suicide attempt requiring medical care and more than 38,000 will die by suicide in the U.S. every year.

Lawn care tips for fall (Family Features) Taking time in the fall to prepare your lawn for the colder months ahead will pay dividends come spring and allow you to enjoy lusher, greener grass when temperatures rise again. Fertilizing Providing nutrients to your lawn before cold weather strikes is good for strengthening roots and increasing the nutrients stored for an earlier spring green. While the top growth of grass stops, grass plants are storing nutrients and energy for the following season. To determine the best ratio of fertilizer for the soil in your yard, you should utilize a soil test. Otherwise, look for fertilizer with a nitrogen-phosphatepotassium (NPK) ratio of 3:1:2 or 4:1:2. When applying the fertilizer, make sure that you follow the application instructions and rate information on the package and use a calibrated spreader to apply the correct amount. It is also a good rule to apply the fertilizer in the fall about 2-3 weeks before the ground freezes so the plant can start to take up some of the nutrients. Instead of pacing the yard with a push spreader, consider a tow-behind spreader attached to your riding lawn mower or garden tractor. An attachment, such as a pull-type spin spreader from John Deere, can quickly distribute fertilizer evenly across your yard. Aerating Aerating, the process of removing plugs of soil and thatch from the lawn, is ideal in cooler months. It encourages deep rooting, improves water and nutrient penetration, and promotes growth of beneficial soil microorganisms. There are a variety of techniques you can use to penetrate the soil such as spiked shoes or spray-on liquids, but to most effectively aerate soil, attach a dethatcher, or a plug aerator behind a riding mower or tractor to remove plugs of soil from two to three inches deep. Mulching If you prefer not to rake or bag grass or leaves, mulching with a mower is an ideal alternative. Be sure to mulch leaves only when they are dry to avoid damp and wet leaves clumping or building up under mower decks. Remember that grass needs sunlight in the fall to help store

food for winter, so don’t wait until your lawn is completely matted down with leaves to mulch. A thin layer of mulched leaves is ideal and helps add nutrients to the soil, reducing the need for fertilizer. Selecting the right mower with mulching attachments or features can save a great deal of time and help ensure a consistent layer of mulch across the yard. For example, John Deere 100-Series lawn tractors have three-in-one mowing decks, which allow you to choose to mulch, bag or allow side-discharge. Composting Creating a compost pile allows you to turn organic material into rich soil. The fall season is a good time to create a compost pile with decaying yard matter, such as vegetables, grass clippings and leaves, which can provide nutrientrich soil for spring planting. For best results, alternate layers

Big E Begins Countdown WEST SPRINGFIELD – The Eastern States Exposition hosted a Community Breakfast yesterday in the storied Coliseum to kick off the countdown to ESE’s 100th anniversary which will be celebrated in 2016. The event was the first of many events

Eugene J. Cassidy, ESE president and CEO

“Our Family Cooks For Your Family”

Village Pizzeria and activities the Exposition has planned for the next two years. “The Exposition was chartered in 1914, when Joshua L. Brooks began his quest to showcase agriculture in the Northeast, and 2014 seemed a fitting year to begin our celebration, culminating with the 100th anniversary in 2016,” Eugene J. Cassidy, ESE president and CEO, said. Cassidy, Chairman of the Board Donald R. Chase and West Springfield Mayor Edward C. Sullivan began the breakfast by officially starting the countdown clock and unveiling the organization’s new specially designed centennial anniversary logo. ESE Historian, Dennis Picard, director of Storrowton Village Museum, presented a pictorial program on the origin of Eastern States Exposition and the significance of founder Joshua L. Brooks. Attendees were asked to fill out “Memory Cards” to share their fondest and earliest memories of the Exposition, some of which will be incorporated into an exhibit planned for the centennial celebration. All were also presented with a “Wooden Nickel” which will be good for free admission on Sept. 16, 2016 – opening day of the 100th Big E. To keep current on all 100th anniversary events and celebrations, visit TheBigE. com, join our mailing list, connect with us on social media or share your memories by emailing Memories@ TheBigE.com. This year’s Big E takes place September 12-28.

Beat the Morning Meltdown (Family Features) Mornings can be mayhem for moms. In fact, according to the Johnsonville Sausage Report, nearly half of moms say that mornings can be so hectic that most days everyone in the family needs to fend for themselves for breakfast. One mom who is all too familiar with handling hectic mornings is Elisa All, founder of 30Second Mobile, a mobile website and app that keeps busy moms "in the know while on the go." All says it's about planning ahead and powering up for the busy day ahead. "The kitchen in the morning can be chaotic if you don't have everything lined up the night before," All said. "I love serving my family a hot, balanced breakfast, and, it's a lot easier than many people think." Johnsonville just introduced fully cooked breakfast sausage, which is easy to warm up in the microwave for 30 seconds, and powers kids up with protein to get them through the morning." Here are her top 10 Morning "Hacks:" 1) Stage a "path" to the door the night before so everyone knows where they're going. 2) Select kids' outfits at night. Be sure to check weather in advance and plan accordingly. 3) Pack lunches ahead of time. After dinner, pack the nonchilled items in the lunchbox and leave it on the counter for quick packing of the chilled things in the morning. 4) Brush teeth and wash face in the morning shower, or take baths the night before. 5) Sunshine helps you wake up. Open the shades and let the light in. 6) Make breakfast easy by keeping tasty foods on hand. Johnsonville's new, fully cooked breakfast links - in Original Recipe, Turkey and Vermont Maple Syrup - help you give your family a wholesome and high quality, warm meal in 30 seconds. 7) Place jackets and backpacks in a central location to grab on the way out. Use a hanging shoe organizer with pockets to keep essentials and accessories by the door. 8) Reward with what works for your child, for example, electronics and other activities they get to do in the car. 9) Motivate and track time with a music playlist. Morning Hacks Everything is more fun and moves more quickly with tunes, and you can track how much time has passed. 10) Care for yourself. Have a workout bag in the car and consider getting up earlier to have some personal time before the day gets going. With these ideas in mind, you'll be ready for whatever the day brings. And one more idea: a mobile breakfast in a coffee mug that's microwaveready and will have you out the door

Where have all the smaller pickups gone? BY TOM AND RAY MAGLIOZZI Dear Tom and Ray: Remember those Datsun mini-trucks that used to be around? Where did that class of trucks go? It seems like all you can get now is a full-size F-150 or similar. Is there anything like those old Japanese mini-trucks still on the market, or should I start shopping for a classic El Camino? What happened to the small trucks? -- Bryant RAY: People stopped buying them. TOM: There still is a class of pickup truck smaller than the full-size F-150s, Silerados and Ram 1500s. But they're not much smaller. RAY: Toyota still makes the Tacoma. Nissan still makes the Frontier. And Chey is coming out with a redesigned Colorado for 2015. TOM: But these are not mini-trucks. The trucks you remember were, essentially, compact Japanese cars with pickup-truck beds. They were cheap, lightweight and utilitarian. RAY: Not enough people want that anymore. Pickup trucks hae become large, luxury cars. The smallest twodoor Toyota Tacoma these days, for example, is only about a foot and a half shorter than the smallest full-size Toyota Tundra. And that Tacoma is still 208 inches long -- only a little shorter than the old Lincoln Town Car land yachts that used to ply the airport terminals. TOM: And een though you can order it with a four-cylinder engine and get a little bet-

Toyota Tacoma ter mileage than the full-size Tundra, it's a cheaper and lesscapable ehicle. So unless maneuerability or parking is an issue, most buyers choose the larger, more comfortable, more up-to-date Tundra. RAY: The problem for manufacturers is that, once you design and build a smaller pickup truck and equip it with eerything a modern ehicle needs to hae, it doesn't cost much less than a full-size pickup. And the mileage isn't that much better. So most people go for the bigger truck. TOM: You should hae a look at the Chey Colorado when it comes out. That'll be the most modern and up-todate of the less-than-full-size pickup trucks out there. RAY: You can look at the Honda Ridgeline (which is more carlike than other pickups, but not much smaller). TOM: You can look for a used Subaru Baja, which was

That's a Ford Explorer with a pickup-truck bed. Again, not small, but smaller than a full-size pickup. TOM: You can look for a classic El Camino, or een a really old Toyota or Datsun truck, if you're willing to gie up safety and reliability. RAY: But what you're really lusting after just isn't for sale anymore, Bryant. At least not in the United States. TOM: If you're willing to relocate, then we can help you out.
