Next school calendar draft approved By HOPE E. TREMBLAY Staff Writer SOUTHWICK – The S o u t h w i c k - To l l a n d Granville Regional School Committee approved a draft of the 2016-2017 school calendar last night after making one change. Superintendent John Barry brought up the scheduled half-day on April 14, 2017, which is Good Friday. “We have it for a halfday, but it’s a holiday for a lot of people so I’m wondering about attendance,” Barry said. Barry said he has been approached by several people questioning having school at all that day. “I’m leaning toward not having school,” he said. The committee agreed unanimously. The 2016-2017 school year is set to begin Sept. 1 for students in grades one12, with preschool and kindergarten starting Sept. 3. Staff returns to school Aug. 29 and has professional development Aug. 30 and 31. The holiday vacation is scheduled for Dec. 24-Jan. 2, and the February break is Feb, 20-24. April break follows Easter, which is another reason Barry said he wanted to give Good Friday off. “I think a lot of people may be traveling at that time,” he said. The last day of school without any snow days is June 13, and with five snow days is set for June 20.

First Congregational seeks $172k to restore historic structure By DENNIS P. HOHENBERGER Correspondent WESTFIELD – The Community Preservation Commission is considering an application to restore the Old Town Hall on 20 Broad Street. The First Congregational Church, which occupies the building, submitted a formal request for $172,000 in grants under the Commonwealth’s Community Preservation Act (CPA). The committee sought clarification from the city’s Law Department on whether granting the CPA money to a church violates the separation of church and state. An immediate opinion by the Law Department was not expected. The church estimated the restoration work will cost $189,000, which includes constructing a handicap ramp and upgrading the kitchen. The $17,000 kitchen upgrade is likely not covered under the CPA. Church members, led by Bob Brownlee, presented the proposal before the committee on Thursday. See Restore, Page 3

Motorcycles stolen from Team Justice By HOPE E. TREMBLAY Staff Writer SOUTHWICK – Team Justice Racing could be facing the end to the 2016 motocross season before it begins. Team Justice President Kevin Bishop said three of the team’s motorcycles were stolen from his home garage this week, and if they are not recovered, the season will not even get off the ground. “One of the bikes was owned by Team Justice and the other two by team members,” said Bishop. “We were working on them over the winter.” Insurance will not cover the three motorcycles and the motocross team formed to give youths something positive to do is in jeopardy of not racing this year. “I was supposed to take three riders to Florida next week for practice, so that trip is cancelled,” said Bishop.
Bishop founded Team Justice in 2004 with the motto of “integrity, sportsmanship, unity.” The mission for the team managers and mentors on the team is to be positive role models for the members of the team and to encourage them to do their best. The mission of the youth riders on the team is to always try to do their best, do well in school, stay drug and alcohol free, and to portray a positive image for other riders and sponsors. Bishop is afraid that some of the riders will stray from the straight and narrow path they have been on if the team has to be suspended until new motorcycles can be obtained. “This has been taken away from them,” he said.
