Women are Affected by Venous Disease More Due to Hormones Recongizing the Signs and Symptoms
Venous disease is one of the most common conditions affecting our health. It is estimated that about 20% of adults may be suffering from venous disease. Although many people may have visible varicose veins, many others have no visible signs of the disease. Individuals with venous disease range from those with small vein disease (spider and reticular veins) to patients with large bulging varicose veins. When varicose veins are present, patients may experience swelling in the legs as well as skin changes such as discoloration, thickening of the skin, and in advanced cases, skin ulcers. Occasionally, large varicose veins may develop blood clots, a condition called superficial phlebitis. Patients without visible signs of venous disease may have symptoms such as leg pain (aching or cramping), leg heaviness or fatigue, swelling, throbbing, burning, itching or tenderness. Some people also experience restless legs.
This article was provided by Circulatory Centers. They have specialized in the treatment of vein issues and vein disease for over 30 years. Their boardcertified doctors and vascular surgeons are experts in diagnosing and treating circulatory issues caused by veins dysfunction. With over 31 offices in seven states, Circulatory Centers are the vein treatment provider doctors recommend most. For more information, visit www.VeinHealth.com or 1-800-342-8918.
Men and women of all ages can be affected by venous disease although women are affected more than men due to hormones. Venous disease has a very strong genetic component but there are certain risk factors that can also contribute to its development. These include obesity, pregnancy, prior trauma, surgery, lifestyle, and occupations that require prolonged standing. The treatment of venous disease has come very far in the past 10 years. Today we know much more about this medical problem and the diagnosis and treatment is far superior to that of times past. Venous disease can be easily diagnosed with the use of painless, noninvasive ultrasound performed in the office to determine if you have venous reflux. Venous reflux is the back flow of blood in the legs caused by weakened valves in the veins of the legs.
GIVE VARICOSE VEINS THE BOOT THIS FALL
If you experience any symptoms of the disease, you need to make sure that your physician is aware. Venous disease can be a serious medical condition, which left untreated, can lead to long standing complications. Treatment for venous disease may involve a procedure called EVLA which is a laser procedure done in the office to close down some of the larger superficial veins. Most patients also require sclerotherapy injections to shut down some of the smaller, more superficial veins of the legs. Treatment can help manage the disease and improve the overall health and appearance of your legs as well as greatly improve your quality of life. Most procedures are covered by insurance.

Faith and the Right Attitude Help a Local Man Walk Again Robert Forbes is grateful, believing that attitude, and his faith, are everything. Three years ago, Forbes was lying in a hospital bed at Mount Nittany Medical Center, critically ill with meningitis. “I was near death,” says Forbes. After more than a month in the hospital, he was unable to walk and needed some intensive rehabilitation. Forbes went to HealthSouth Nittany Valley Rehabilitation Hospital in Pleasant Gap. When Forbes started rehabilitation, he was in a wheelchair. His goal was to go home and remain independent. With several weeks of inpatient physical and occupational therapy, Forbes learned to
walk again. When he was discharged, he continued his therapy, gaining more strength and stability, at HealthSouth’s Pleasant Gap Outpatient Clinic. That was three years ago, and Forbes is enjoying an active lifestyle. A State College resident for 12 years, he “bleeds blue and white.” While attending Penn State sports events keeps him busy, he is also active in his church, St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, welcoming new members and visiting those who could use some support and encouragement. A recent visit to a HealthSouth patient brought back memories of his rehabilitation, and he was inspired to share his gratitude with the HealthSouth staff. “Thanks to my faith, and the people at HealthSouth, I learned to walk again,” Forbes says. “Not only can I walk again, I play golf and enjoy all of the active events here in State College and Penn State. We Are Penn State!”

Good Vein Health is a Family Affair What is vein disease?
“I have had three vein treatments at AVC with very little discomfort. Dr. Faber and his staff are very friendly, caring and helpful— making sure I am comfortable during the procedures. Since the treatments, I have less leg pain, more confidence and a better understanding of good vein health that I can pass along to my daughters.”
Healthy veins have valves which open and close to assist the return of blood to the heart. Venous disease occurs if these valves become damaged, allowing the backward flow of blood in the legs. When blood cannot be properly returned through the vein, it can pool in the legs, leading to a feeling of heaviness and fatigue—causing varicose veins and other skin changes. While usually not life-threatening, venous disorders still affect your circulatory system and can lead to more serious complications, such as ulcers, blood clots and/or stroke if left untreated.
~Melissa Jean Noel (pictured with Madison and Mia)
What causes vein disease? Most vein disease has a strong genetic link, however, the more time we spend sedentary or standing on our feet, the more we increase the likelihood that our veins will have difficulty returning the blood. The most common factors are: • genetics
• body weight
• age
• gender
• sedentary lifestyle
Women are about two times more likely to suffer from varicose veins than men. Pregnancy and hormonal changes can increase susceptibility to varicose veins.
signs & symptoms of varicose veins Varicose veins do not always cause pain, and therefore, can go unnoticed. Signs you may have varicose veins include: • Tired, achy, painful legs • Tenderness around the varicose vein
vein treatments There are many minimally-invasive options to treat your venous conditions—with a short recovery and quick return to everyday activities. A personalized plan of care will be determined to meet your individualized needs.
preventive vein care Self-care—such as exercise, maintaining a healthy weight, eating well, elevating your legs, wearing compression stockings and controlling other health conditions—can help prevent varicose veins or keep them from getting worse. However, if you are concerned about how your veins look and feel, you should know there are virtually pain-free treatments available. Walk in, walk out.

• Numbness, swelling, burning, or heaviness in the legs • Itching or irritated rash on the legs or near the ankles • Veins that are dark purple or blue in color and appear twisted and bulging. Tips to Enjoy the Holidays Without the Holiday Weight Gain By Lannette Johnston, MS,BSN,RN,iRNPA, CPST, CHC, Director of Outreach Programs of Tyrone Regional Health Network
The holiday is season is just around the corner! Unfortunately so is the average weight gain of 1 to 2 pounds. This may not sound like a lot; however those 1-2 pounds adds up. In 5 years that would be an additional 5-10 pounds. Holiday parties are jammed with succulent appetizers, super sized holiday dinners, eggnog, alcoholic drinks, and rich desserts. The Holiday season can be a stressful time also. Many people have additional stressors such as social anxiety, financial burden, depression, and the dreaded task of gift buying. Some people tend to cope with these stressors through stress eating and drinking. It is hard to cope with all the stressors during the Holiday season. Don’t fear help is here! Here are some tips to get you through the holidays without gaining weight. 1. Depression and stress are common reasons why people over eat. To help prevent stress eating try the following tips. Be aware of your own state of health! If you think you are feeling down or stressed, then do something about it! Talk with your doctor and begin an exercise program. Studies show that exercise has euphoric effects on the brain and body! Enjoy the holiday parties by taking more time to focus on your true meaning of the holiday. Be generous by giving to others through volunteer work in your community, shelters, or food banks. Helping others will not only help those in need, but it will make you feel better about yourself. The less stressed you are, the less you feel the urge to stress eat. 2. You do not need to accept every party invitation. Pick and choose with whom you want to celebrate the holidays. It’s ok to say “I am sorry I can’t make it.” 3. If you know you are attending a holiday party, do not make the mistake of fasting during the day so you can eat at the party! Before attending the party, have a healthy filling snack and a large glass of water. This will help you refrain from over indulging at the party. 4. When going to a holiday party, spend more time enjoying the vibrant holiday decorations and talking with people. The more you socialize, the less likely you are to be munching on appetizers. 5. Limit your portion size, slow down eating, and savor your food! Even though there is a smorgasbord of food, you do not need to try every type of food. Add more fruits and vegetables in the mix; they will help fill you up. 6. Limit your alcohol consumption. Consider this before drinking alcohol: A 12 oz beer has 153 calories, 9oz Pina Colada has 490 calories, 3.5 oz of whiskey has November December 2014
6
160 calories, 3.5 oz of sweet wine has 165 calories, and the holiday eggnog has 223 calories! Not only will you keep the calories down by limiting your alcohol consumption, you will help keep your blood alcohol level down as well. If you are planning on drinking, please have a designated driver. Keep you and everyone else safe! 7. The day before attending the holiday parties get plenty of rest and drink a lot of water. 8. If you are having the holiday party, offer more healthy selections and limit the high calorie rich foods. 9. If you do overindulge, don’t beat yourself up. Instead, go for a walk or get on the treadmill for an extra 15 minutes. The BCWHI wish you and your family a wonderful holiday season!

Roth IRAs By Judy Loy, ChFC® One of the more underutilized vehicles for retirement is the Roth IRA. It may be because it delays gratification. Unlike the traditional IRA, the Roth does not provide a tax advantage in the year you contribute. Money grows taxdeferred like all retirement accounts but it has two major advantages that make it a great diversification and retirement tool. The first advantage is that money distributed in retirement is tax-free. Therefore, all the growth in the Roth is never taxed. This can be wonderful because when taking money in retirement you retain more of it. One can take a monthly distribution of $700 from a Roth during retirement without taking an amount off for federal tax. In contrast, a $700 distribution from a traditional IRA takes a hit in taxes so you may only be living on $560 because 20% is withheld in tax. Because the Roth has tax-free distributions, it does not count towards income for social security taxation or for penalizing social security

prior to full retirement. Therefore, if you are retiring early and taking social security, a Roth can be invaluable. For many, putting money into retirement accounts is difficult due to the fact that it locks the money away in the case of an emergency or tough time. A Roth can be a life saver in difficult times. Five years after first investing in a Roth, the contributions can be withdrawn before 59 ½ without penalty or taxes. When putting together a retirement plan, don’t just plan for taxes now but diversify your tax situation for the duration of your retirement. An appropriate balance of investments and use of all the retirement options available are desirable given the uncertainties that face everyone before and after retirement. Consider a Roth if it is available to you. Judy Loy, ChFC®, is a Registered Investment Advisor and CEO at Nestlerode & Loy Investment Advisors, State College, Pa. INSURANCE: To Have or Not to Have? For some reason, everyone feels safer and more secure when they have insurance. In most cases....this is a natural, justified feeling to have.
Nicole Carnicella DMD, MAGD
it.
If your house burns down, your home owner’s insurance replaces it; If you wreck your car, your car insurance replaces it;
If you need a new heart, your health insurance replaces
However, if you need new teeth your dental insurance says too bad we don’t cover new teeth. Dental insurance covers dentures which are NOT new teeth. Dentures are plastic replicas of teeth that do not function at all like natural teeth. Dentures are plastic replicas that cannot tear bread, cannot grind meat, cannot stay put in your mouth when you smile, laugh, or sneeze. So you and/ or your HR director have paid for this insurance that is suppose to make you feel safe, secure, and return your mouth as close to new or as close to original as possible. Yet with their policy restrictions, limitations, and pre-exsiting clauses, not to mention the $1000.00 they give you annually (which has been the same amount dental insurance companies have given enrollers since 1950,) no patient can come close to restoring their mouth as naturally as possible. Dentists could restore a patient’s mouth in 1950 for $1000.00 a year when bread was $0.10, the minimum wage was $0.75 an hour and the average cost of a lab bill on a crown was $5.00. These numbers and costs have inflated anywhere for 10 to 100 times in the last 50 years, meaning an employee should have at least $10,000.00 in dental insurance a year to work with.....yet it still remains $1000.00. Insurance companies at this point are not really suppling employers with insurance or “coverage” in the true sense of the word; they are simply paying your dental bills for you, the ones they agree to pay (not what you may actually need.) Most importantly, they are paying themsleves handsomly to be your bill payer. Employers, employees, ANYONE, would be better off paying the dentist directly, and not paying Delta Dental, or United Concordia to pay the denitst for you. November December 2014

I have been working as a consultant for a private company opening medical clinics across the country. When evaluating usage reports from various school districts, counties, cities, etc, the employer on average paid the dental insurance company 10-20% more in premium payments than they would have if they had just paid the dentists directly, AND THE EMPLOYEES
WOULD GO FOR FREE!!!
I have become highly educated on insurance matters over the last year, and I want to work with individuals, employers, HR directors, etc to share this education and to make dental care affordable to all employees and their families. If you yourself are interested in coming in for a free private insurance consultation please call our office. Otherwise, please share this article with your employer or HR director, and myself or one of my highly trained insurance specialists would be happy to have a meeting with your office. We will also be hosting an insurance forum mid November, so please follow us on FB, Carnicella and Associates, for more information on this informative seminar date. AND PLEASE, do not let any of your HR departments sign any insurance contracts with any dental insurance companies without talking with our office first! Stop paying dental insurance companies ridiculous premiums for nothing while your oral health suffers. You deserve to have a healthy beautiful mouth, and it should be affordable to achieve!

RECOGNIZING SUBTLE CHANGES IS KEY TO DETECTING OVARIAN CANCER By Dr. Danielle Behrens, Medical Oncologist, Susquehanna Health Cancer Center know your family medical history to determine if genetic screening is necessary. While there is no clear cause for ovarian cancer, there are identifiable risk factors, which include age, reproductive history and family history. Increasing age is a risk factor for the development of ovarian cancer. The condition is most common in women between 60-80 years old.
Ovarian cancer is the eighth most common cancer in women and the leading cause of death from female reproductive cancer in the United States. The American Cancer Society and National Cancer Institute estimate there will be 22,000 new cases and 14,000 deaths from the disease in 2014. Although treatable, the majority of ovarian cancer cases are diagnosed at an advanced stage. There are no recommended screening tests for the general population, and early symptoms for ovarian cancer tend to be vague. To aid in early detection, it is very important to be familiar with your body so you can note any subtle changes, to have routine gynecologic care, to know the risk factors for ovarian cancer and to
A woman’s reproductive history is another indicator of risk. Early onset of menstruation and an older age at menopause increases risk for ovarian cancer as does never having a child or having your first full term pregnancy after age 30. Having children at a younger age or having multiple pregnancies reduces the risk. Breastfeeding, tubal ligation and the use of birth control pills have also been shown to reduce the risk of developing ovarian cancer. Women who have a first or second degree relative with a history of ovarian cancer are at increased risk of developing ovarian cancer. A family history of breast or colorectal cancer may also increase risk. If you have a family history of those diseases, talk to your physician about the value of genetic screening. About 10-15 percent of ovarian cancer cases are genetically linked. Patients with a known genetic mutation, such as BRCA1 or BRCA2, have a significant risk of developing ovarian cancer and surgical removal of the
ovaries and fallopian tubes is recommended for these patients. Your best defense is selfawareness. Regularly take note of your weight, girth (the measure around your abdominal area) and digestive habits so you can detect subtle changes that could indicate ovarian cancer. Contact your doctor if you have any of these symptoms for more than a few weeks, or any new symptom: ■
Early satiety (feeling full after eating small amounts)
■
Abdominal bloating
■
Abdominal or pelvic pain
■
Unexplained weight gain or loss
■
Constipation
■
Urinary symptoms (frequency, urgency)
■
Fatigue
■
Back pain
In most cases, these symptoms result from other, less serious conditions. As part of your evaluation, your doctor will obtain a detailed history and perform a physical exam, including a pelvic exam, to evaluate for an ovarian or abdominal mass. Blood tests, ultrasound, CT scan and MRI are other tests doctors use if ovarian cancer is suspected. The treatment for ovarian cancer includes surgery which is often followed by chemotherapy.

GAPSTM (Gut and Psychology Syndrome) “ All Diseases Begin in the Gut”~ Hippocrates, 460-37-BC GAPS - what is it? Learn about the condition which is behind many mental and physical problems, which our children and adults suffer from, such as autism, hyperactivity and attention deficit, dyslexia, dyspraxia, depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, Merry Matukonis, RN, ACN eating disorders and more. Gut and Psychology Syndrome (GAP Syndrome or GAPS) is a condition, which establishes a connection between the functions of the digestive system and the brain. This term was created by Dr Natasha Campbell-McBride, MD, MMedSci (neurology), MMedSci (human nutrition) in 2004 after working with hundreds of children and adults with neurological and psychiatric conditions, such as autistic spectrum disorders, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD/ADD), schizophrenia, dyslexia, dyspraxia, depression, obsessive –compulsive disorder, bi-polar disorder and other neuro-psychological and psychiatric problems. Gut flora is something we do not think much about. And yet the number of functions the gut flora fulfils is so vital for us that if some day our digestive tract got sterilized we probably would not survive. The first and very important function is appropriate digestion and absorption of food. If a child does not acquire normal balanced gut flora, then the child will not digest and absorb foods properly, developing multiple nutritional deficiencies. And that is what we commonly see in children and adults with learning disabilities, psychiatric problems and allergies. Many of these patients are malnourished. Even in the case where the child may grow well, testing reveals some typical nutritional deficiencies in many important minerals, vitamins, essential fats, many amino-acids and other nutrients. Apart from taking a direct part in nourishing the body, beneficial bacteria in the gut act as the housekeepers for the digestive tract. They coat the entire surface of the gut protecting it from invaders and toxins by providing a natural barrier and producing a lot of anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal substances. At the same time they provide the gut lining with nourishment. It is estimated that 60 – 70% of energy the gut lining derives, is from the activity of bacteria, which live on it. So, it is no surprise that when the gut flora is abnormal the digestive tract itself cannot be healthy. Indeed most children and adults with learning disabilities, psychiatric November November/ December December 2014 2014

Did you or your child have digestive problems and allergies, was a fussy eater, then in late teens become anorexic or bulimic? Did you or your child suffer from tummy aches, dyslexia, dyspraxia, was anemic or vegetarian, and then developed psychotic episodes and was diagnosed with schizophrenia? Did you or your child have urinary infections or acne, treated with numerous courses of antibiotics, and then developed bloating, abdominal pain and was diagnosed with IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome)? Gift for Yourself During the Holidays By Tammy Miller This time of year we often reflect on the past year with good times, and maybe a few less than wonderful times, but still a time for reflection. Well, that is after we clean the house for the holiday company, do the shopping for the various holidays we celebrate, wrap any presents needing wrapping, attend children’s and grandchildren’s parties, concerts, plays, do the cooking, baking, plan office parties and…STOP THE MADNESS!!!! Yes, this time of year seems filled with things to do, places to go and people to meet, but how many of us offer that gift to one of the most important people in our lives…ourselves. I am not talking about pretentious conceit, but more about relaxation and tired feet! How about a gift for yourself this holiday season? What do YOU do for yourself? There are several possibilities. I would suggest you turn off all electronic devices first! Then, you could take a warm bubble bath, go for a walk, read a good book, make a cup of Chamomile tea and listen to soft soothing music (okay, one electronic device – soft, soothing music only!), just breathe and focus on your breathing, visualize being someplace you love to be...maybe the beach or a quaint café with a warm cup of latte, or…. So often the world gets spinning around us and seems to speed up this time of year with people pulling us in all directions. We put everything and everyone else on the calendar – this year make an entry or two, or a few just for YOU! This year, MAKE and TAKE the time for you! YOU are an incredible gift, take the time to
unwrap the loveliness you have within and you may be amazed at the incredible true and lasting gifts that come your way. WHAT IT TAKES TO SUCCEED ON THE WEB
If you are a business large or small in today’s world you almost certainly either have a website or, if you do not have a website, you have probably thought about getting one. The web is everywhere. It permeates all of our waking hours at work, at home, on our commute and even on airplanes now. Surprisingly, according to recent figures supplied by Google, over 50% of businesses still do not have an online presence. Those who do have a website often do not have a site By as Michael Johnston that performs as well it should. Growing Trend:
Pre Holiday Procedures and Gifting Plastic Surgery As the holidays are fast approaching, everyone wants to look their best in preparation for events and gatherings with family, friends, and co-workers. “We routinely see a surge in Botox, dermal fillers, microdermabrasions, and various laser treatments in preparation for the season’s festivities, “ states Dr. Robert Louton, board certified plastic surgeon and CEO of Blair Plastic Surgery. “The immediate results and lack of social downtime for these non-surgical procedures, make it easy and convenient to obtain a quick fix or last minute touch up before your next event.” What may be surprising is that according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, the demand for plastic surgery procedures before and during the holiday season also increase dramatically nationwide.
surgery and with their choice of plastic surgeon before moving forward. “If you really want to give a thoughtful gift, provide the gift of time to help care for the person after the surgery.” If you are looking forward to a festive holiday season and want to look your best, now is a great time to call for details on our holiday specials, 814-949-7280. Blair Plastic Surgery has two convenient locations, Altoona and State College. Find us on Facebook and at www.BlairPlasticSurgery.com. Gift Certificates are available.
With almost 25 years in the field of aesthetic surgery, Dr. Louton concurs. “Breast augmentation and liposuction top our patient’s wish list this time of year as busy individuals take advantage of time off work for their recovery.” With this increase in popularity however, Dr. Louton cautions individuals considering gifting plastic surgery. “Plastic surgery should never be given as a surprise gift. It must be stressed that the decision to have a cosmetic procedure is a very individual one and is always ultimately up to the patient and her/his surgeon.” If cosmetic surgery is on your gift list this season, you should consider this: • The desire for plastic or cosmetic surgery should come from the person who will be operated on, not from a mate, family member or friend. The patient’s desires and decisions about surgery are final. • If he or she is open to the idea, you may want to help the potential patient find a board certified plastic surgeon with plenty of experience performing the treatment that will be given as a “gift”. “I think the best way to approach plastic surgery as a gift is to buy only an initial consultation and then to let the patient take it from there,” says Dr. Louton. Patients should feel comfortable with their choice to have November December 2014

Winding Down For Winter Heading into winter is a good time to reflect on the past year. Like the weather, the real estate market will cool off so it is a good time to see what has happened in 2014. In reviewing statistics for the Centre County MLS, as of the middle of October, I am reminded of how important it is to look at real estate in a local context. National and regional data is okay to get a general idea of trends, but you could be making some big mistakes if you don’t use local data in making decisions. In Centre County, as a whole, we saw days-on-market drop by two weeks. However, breaking it down by school districts we see a range of a two months drop to increasing by two weeks. In Mifflin Co. it dropped by more than a month while Tyrone saw theirs increase by a similar amount. The county wide average sales price increased ~1.00% but wide variability between school districts (i.e. Bellefonte up 12+%, Bald Eagle down 8%). The county list-to-sale price ratio was remarkably consistent, slightly below 95%, yet individual school districts varied from 87% (Philipsburg) to nearly 96% (State College). There are many factors that affect the final sales price and the time “on market”. If you are basing your assumptions on national or regional information you may
be in for quite a surprise when you try to buy or sell. That is why many Realtors cringe when we hear our clients quote some of the national sources. They are not trying to mislead anybody. They simply are not breaking data down to the local level. Nor is a Realtor misleading you if they tell you that your assumptions are off if they are based upon national or regional data. That is why you will hear the mantra of “location, location, location” when it comes to real estate. Now is the time to be planning ahead for 2015. This is true in regards to things you may do to improve the efficiency of your home, home improvement projects for next year, or the purchase or sale of a property. In all those circumstances it is prudent to seek the professional advice of a trusted local Realtor. Scot Chambers, REALTOR® ABR, e-PRO, GREEN, SRES

Frustrated Father Solves One Of Life’s Small Nagging Issues It took a family ski trip to Utah, a hat wearer doing what comes naturally and a broken pair of favorite sunglasses to solve one of life’s little nagging problems. Do you find yourself wearing a wide variety of hats? Like most men & women, do you instinctively place your eyewear on the brim of your hat when not wearing them? Then, like me you’ve suffered lost sunglasses and broken frames, or squinted through eyewear lenses scratched right in your line of sight as the result of having fallen to the ground. The idea to create the LidsLash occurred while on a family ski vacation in 2013. I was doing my best imitation of the Walker Family pack mule or yak, lugging my family’s skis, poles, helmets, and gloves across the mid-mountain lodge after lunch on a beautiful blue bird day. Like millions of other men and women, I place my sunglasses on my head (or hat) when I do not need them.
of prototypes, the 1st production run of LidsLash product launched at the Washington Redskins training camp held in Richmond Virginia as well as our on website (www.lidslash.com). We’ve received tremendous feedback from hunters and fishermen, golfers, NASCAR race fans, casual sports enthusiasts, beach goers, and even construction and oilfield workers who use the LidsLash to hold their safety glasses to their safety helmets. Additionally, corporations have begun calling eager to brand the LidsLash with their company logo for promotional items and gifts. With Christmas approaching, more and more women are reaching out to us about what a great stocking stuffer this will be for the hat wearers, both men and women, in their lives. For people who wear hats and instinctually place their eyewear on the brim of their hats, the LidsLash is like Christmas everyday! For more information on LidsLash please visit our website at lidslash.com, call us at (804) 480-4095 or email us at sales@lidslash.com.
While crossing the great room of the lodge to the exit, I dropped a glove and when I looked down to find it my sunglasses fell off my knit hat and onto the stone floor. Before I could retrieve them, someone accidentally stepped on my expensive shades with their ski boot and destroyed them. My 5 year old son’s response? “Dad, you should find a
way to attach your glasses to your hat so they won’t fall off.” Duly noted
Kendall...duly noted.
Back in Virginia, I used household items like washer disc magnets, a silicone bracelet, and some super glue to make my first working prototype to hold my glasses on my hat until I needed them. A year later and dozens

Holiday Reasons to See a Chiropractor By Doctors Kelli Datres and Kevin McCarthy Holidays can be a very busy and exciting time of the year. People are excited to see family and friends and attend several planned events. While it is a fun time of the year, many people can become run down and forget to take care of their own health. Here are some reasons it is a good idea to visit your chiropractor during the holidays. 1. Stress. Everyone knows the holidays can be stressful. Sometimes dealing with family, traveling, and trying to pay for or find the perfect gifts can be stressful. Holidays can also bring up the sorrow or grief for lost loved ones. Everyone carries stress differently, but many times symptoms are the same. Your body deals with stress by tensing up. Many people suffer with headaches, neck pain, low back pain, jaw pain, shoulder pain, or stomachaches when stress build up. Chiropractic can help decrease muscle tension, re-align your spine, and help your nervous system perform optimally so you feel well throughout the hustle and bustle of the season. 2. Travel. The holidays are the busiest time of year for traveling, and being a traveler can throw your body out of whack. Carrying heavy suitcases, sitting on a plane for hours, pressure changes, or driving in the car can take a toll on your body. Neck, shoulders, and low back are commonly sore areas. Luckily chiropractic is very effective for helping overuse injuries from long travel days. Our bodies are meant to move so they can get irritated when they are stuck in a position for several hours. Doctors Kelli Datres and Kevin McCarthy recommend patients to get adjusted before and after holiday travel. 3. Can help your body to fight colds, flu, & depression. The fall and winter months bring on many sniffles, chills, fevers, and decreased immune systems. Often times vitamin D levels plummet this time of year and can make people feel tired or depressed. Seeing a chiropractor November December 2014

regularly can help stimulate the nervous system, boost the immune system, and increase lymph drainage, which can flush out toxins. Doctors in our office often recommend whole food nutrition products and essential oils that can also help the body to fight ear infections, sinus infections, and sore throats. 4. Shoveling, Raking, and Ice. The winter months bring on outdoor work of raking leaves, shoveling snow, and scraping ice. Many times people injure themselves by lifting heavy snow or slipping on ice. Repetitive twisting motions can be harmful to your back muscles and discs. It is important to remember to bend your knees and switch sides while shoveling. If you do hurt yourself while working outside, please call our office to get help. 5. Pregnancy. Although pregnancy is not only related to the holidays, it is a good idea to get chiropractic adjustments throughout the process. Pregnant moms can be more susceptible to stress, injury, and getting sick because of the structural and hormonal changes her body is going through while caring for the baby. Medications are less likely to be taken during pregnancy because of the side effects on the fetus. Therefore chiropractic adjustments, whole food nutrition, and essential oils can be helpful during pregnancy. They are good options for women to keep the body aligned, decrease muscle tension, and prepare the mom’s body for the birth process. If you have any questions, please call our office. We would love to help you feel well. The Greatest Wealth is Your Health. We wish everyone a very safe, happy, and healthy Holiday Season!

Reasons Why You Should Have Your Hearing Tested There are several reasons why you should have your hearing tested: 1. Rule out a serious medical problem. It is great to have a hearing test baseline before you notice a hearing loss. Hearing testing can be an early indicator of cardiovascular problems. 2. Reduce the risk of brain shrinkage and memory problems. Hearing loss can be associated with short term memory issues. 3. Decrease the chance of mental decline from dementia. Untreated hearing loss speeds up age-related cognitive decline and dementia. 4. Improve productivity at work. Treatment for hearing loss reduces work discrimination. 5. Keep active and prevent the gradual onset of social isolation and depression. When a person can’t hear, they no longer enjoy or attend social gatherings. This leads to isolation and possible depression. 6. Reduce stress and fatigue. It is exhausting communicating when you have a hearing loss. 7. Enhance the lives of your family and friends.
Hearing aids can improve a person’s social, emotional and interpersonal well being. Information from Hearing Health, Fall 2014.

Hair
To Color or Not To Color…
Attention Ladies! Gray hair does not make you look old! There are many things that can make you look old. Your age is probably the primary culprit. Then there’s diet, rest, exercise… you’ve heard it all before. But it seems gray hair always gets the blame. The truth is, as your hair color is changing, so is the color of your skin, eyes, and teeth. (In an effort to stay out of trouble I’ll use myself as an example.) Before my hair began to turn gray I stayed away from gray clothing. With my skin tone, gray clothes made me look physically sick. But now that I’m mostly gray I can ROCK a gray suit. I even have gray frames for my glasses. Please don’t misunderstand me. Many of my color clients come to me expressly to have their gray covered. Further, I love coloring gray because gray coverage offers its own set of challenges for a colorist. If you do choose to color your gray, here are a few quick rules to help put things in perspective: 1. Highlighting gray hair does not camouflage the gray. 2. If you want to go lighter, don’t go more than 2 levels lighter than your present natural color. Lighter hair
accentuates facial lines. 3. Use translucent colors for a more natural look. 4. If you look in the mirror and see a face and hair, your color is probably wrong for you. If your color is right, you should just see your beautiful head and face as a blended picture. Finally, remember that hair is only part of the total package. Whether your hair is changed by nature or by choice, your clothing, accessories, eyeglasses and makeup (if worn) must coordinate to complete the picture. To color or not to color… that is the question! Isn’t it nice to know that you can look great either way?!

Dear Nutritionist, I’m so tired all the time. My lab tests say everything is normal…it sure doesn’t feel that way! Can you help me? — Sharon, Dubois, PA Dear Sharon, This is one of the most common complaints we hear. YES! We can help you. This is what we did for Sharon: The first step was to determine causes of her fatigue. We used the TRIAD test, a cutting edge functional test that is like interviewing your body about what’s out of balance. Here is what we found: Sharon had hidden food allergies to eggs and dairy. She never knew, never reacted to these foods. But they were causing some of her fatigue and as it turned out, most of her muscle and joint pain. She had a bacterial infection in her small intestine, causing much of the chronic bloating and gas she experienced. This infection was generating ammonia, creating brain fog, fatigue and frequent urination. She was missing some critical B vitamins. The amount in her multivitamin was not meeting her needs. These missing vitamins are needed to convert amino acids (proteins) into energy. Not having them in adequate supply was causing some of her fatigue. Her results: Just one month after following the program Sharon reports that her digestion is excellent, all joint and muscle pain is gone, and she no longer requires a nap in the afternoon. Her sleep has also improved. Her energy is about 75% better and we feel certain that it will continue to improve as the nutritional depletions are corrected over time. As it turned out she had several causes of fatigue. They all needed to be identified and addressed in order to give her the best results. Not sure? Schedule a Free 15 minute consult to determine what’s right for you!

Community
100+ W men Who
CARE
Women Coming Together to Support the Local Community
Three small groups of women are making a powerful impact in their communities by funding local non-profit organizations. For example, the members of Centre County Chapter of 100+ Women Who Care have collectively contributed thousands of dollars to Housing Transitions Inc., The Bob Perks Cancer Assistance Fund, Easter Seals, Centre County Historical Society, PAWS, Trout Unlimited and Millbrook Marsh. There are two additional chapters that meet in Huntingdon County and SUN (Snyder, Union & Northumberland Counties). Each group meets for an hour just four times a year. Each 100+ Women Who Care member commits to writing a $100 check to the charity that is selected by vote at the meeting. The members of these groups are both young and old, working and retired, volunteers and non-volunteers, environmentalists and humanitarians, long-time residents and newly arrived. Despite their diverse backgrounds, they all have a passion for helping the charities that operate in their local communities. Some members are so passionate about a favorite charity that they will make an appeal several times until they succeed in being selected by the group. Whatever your interests, these groups provide the opportunity to meet, network and make friends with other women from a variety of backgrounds. The meetings are also a wonderful opportunity to learn about organizations that you may not know about in detail and you may not have considered donating to on your own.
100 WWC (Women Who Care)
• We meet four (4) times a year, for one hour, to nominate any 501(c)3 charities that provide services within member county. • Any member of the group can nominate a charity. • Three nominations are chosen at random, and after a brief presentation by the nominating member, all members vote for one charity to support. • Everyone writes a (tax deductible) $100 check, on the spot, directly to the winning charity.

Central PA Hometowns: Where Our Hearts Are
Bellefonte
Bellefonte, the Centre County seat, is 10 miles northeast of Penn State’s University Park campus. Named in honor of the town’s central spring (“la belle fonte”) by the French statesman Talleyrand, Bellefonte has been home to seven governors from three states. You’ll see the names on a monument in Tallyrand Park. It started as one house and a crossroad in the late 1700s. Then iron was found and the town grew – now home to nearly 7,000. The good people of Bellefonte have kept the Christmas spirit alive for more than three decades – presenting Bellefonte Victorian Christmas and celebrating the holiday with joy and good cheer. The town’s Victorian beginnings are evident from the ornate decorations to the costumed townsfolk, with a backdrop of period architecture that distinguishes this historic county seat. This year’s opening ceremonies are at 6:30 p.m. Friday, December 12 at the Bellefonte Elementary School. Christmas concerts, children’s events, Victorian teas, and the arts and crafts fair take place all day Saturday and Sunday, December 13 and 14 downtown. See the classic architecture via horsedrawn carriage ride, an historic walking tour, and Saturday’s Victorian Homes Tour at five stunning historic residences. Dickens’ troupe characters and period-dressed citizens make for great photo ops, as does the Santa House with the jolly old elf meeting the kids starting at noon Saturday and Sunday. The event ends with the inspiring Victorian Christmas Choir concert at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Bellefonte High School Theatre. Visit www.bellefontevictorianchristmas.com. Email me your hometown with your reasons why you’d like to be chosen for the next issue of The Women’s Journal. Sandie Biddle, contributing writer, sandie.biddle@verizon.net.

Health
The MTHFR Gene Defect And Chronic Health Problems In 2003, a genetic study called the Human Genome Project was completed. And via that study, they discovered that an important gene towards your health and well-being called the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) was defective in a lot of folks especially those people suffering from chronic health conditions!
What a healthy MTHFR gene does for you
When it’s all working right, the MTHFR gene begins a multi-step chemical breakdown process, aka methylation. If you have this gene and methylate poorly, there are things that can and need to be done to support you.
THE IMPORTANCE OF METHYLATION
Methylation is VERY important for the following processes to occur in our body: • DNA/RNA synthesis (turning on/off genes) • Brain chemical production (e.g. dopamine and serotonin) • Hormonal breakdown (e.g. estrogen and testosterone) • Creation of immune cells (e.g. NK cells and T-cells) • Creation of protective coating on nerves (i.e. myelin formation) • Processing of chemicals and toxins (detoxification)
When poor methylation occurs in our body, here is what can happen: • Cancer • Neurological Disorders…Anxiety, depression, Parkinson’s, tremor disorder, MS, Alzheimer’s, dementia, neuropathies, migraines and cluster headaches • Hormonal regulation issues such as PMS, ovarian cysts, fibroids, PCOS in women or low testosterone in men • Autoimmune disorders and Immune deficiency • Chemical sensitivities, Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome • ADHD, Autism, Asperger’s syndrome, dyslexia, and learning disabilities • Insomnia
Symptoms associated with poor methylation: Category 1: • Fatigue • Slow Recovery from exercise • Slow healing following injury November December 2014
• Difficulty with weight loss • Slow metabolism • Low muscle tone Category 2: • Focus/concentration issues • Mood instability • Sleep disturbances (waking up often) • Clumsiness • Loss of train of thought • Mixing up words when speaking or writing • Trouble with organizational skills • History of ADD/ADHD Category 3: • Chronic infections • Yeast overgrowth • History of bacterial or fungal infections • Gut issues (bowel irritation, constipation, diarrhea) • Chronic sinus infections • Need for multiple doses of antibiotics CALL TODAY TO SCHEDULE A CONSULTATION AND EXAM - (814)238-0232 Dr. Thad Diehl, D.C. is the founder and clinical director of Advanced Center for Pain Relief and Wellness. FaithCentre: Beyond Filling Needs
BELLEFONTE – FaithCentre is a unique blend of services for neighbors in need, including a food bank, thrift store, and pet food bank. Thanks to Executive Director Nichole Summers, D.Ed., in October they partnered with Penn State, Mount Nittany Physicians Group, local banks, animal rescue groups, and other organizations to offer nutrition education classes, health screenings, budgeting classes, pet care clinics, and recreational opportunities. Nichole envisions the FaithCentre as “not just a place where we hand out free stuff – where we can help people make positive changes, good decisions for their future.” Like the loaves and fishes, the center continues to grow, with the food bank expanding into its own location at 131 W Allegheny St, in addition to the thrift store on W High St. “We’re part of the community safety net,” she said, “of the unusually fine collaboration of helping agencies in Centre County.” www.faithcentre.info
Bedford Endowments: Neighbors Helping Neighbors
BEDFORD – Bedford County Endowments is part of the Community Foundation of the Alleghenies, a non-profit organization that accepts and distributes charitable gifts, grows the funds, and awards grants and scholarships in its communities. Kay Reynolds has been its executive director for nine years. “We’ve distributed $775,752.00 in scholarships to 486 students, for example,” Kay said. Her office coordinates donations from nearly 5,000 sources to more than 500 small charities, from homeless pets to history, arts to family services. Their assets for 2014 are more than $62 million. From the All 4 Smiles Fund started by 11-year-old Kayla Jones to provide stuffed animals to young patients at UPMC Bedford to the Diamonds & Ice Gala at The Omni Bedford Springs, Kay puts all her passion into helping generous Bedford County citizens make positive changes in the local quality of life. www.cfallegenies.org
United Way of Blair County: Touching the Most Lives
ALTOONA – After 11 years with NHS Human Services, this September Melanie Schildt became executive director of United Way of Blair County. “We’re an impact-grant United Way,” she explained, “with various agencies applying for grants every year for funds for programs.” They’re currently funding 30 programs in the county, from Joshua House summer camps to Meals on Wheels, the Housing Counseling Program to the Domestic Abuse Shelter. This year’s campaign is underway, with expectations of more than $525,000. “It’s not the money so much as it is our goal of increasing our impact,” Melanie said. “We’re reaching out to so many, but there are so many more we can help.” United Way makes a difference in many ways, like the Day of Caring, Stuff the Bus backpacks of school supplies, Urban Garden Project, and Volunteer Income Tax assistance, to name a few. www.unitedwayofblaircounty.org.

How To “Win” A Custody Battle Let me begin by saying “the only way to know if you “won” a custody battle is when your child turns 18 and she is a happy, healthy, well-adjusted child ready to become a productive member of society. However, if you are reading this, I know you love your child and want to do what is best for her, which usually means, she spends the primary amount of her time with you.
her child. As one court likes to say “you found a way to make a baby with this man, you better find a way to raise the baby with this man.” If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. Attorney Lance T. Marshall has built a practice centered on providing exceptional, honest service to clients as they go through the challenges of the legal system. He has the depth of understanding and skill you need and is committed to providing an honest evaluation of where your case stands and what needs to be done. Answers and information are never more than a phone call away.
Once again, my recent experience in Court reveals that the way to have the Court rule in your favor is to focus on what you can control, i.e., your home, your stability, and what kind of life you can offer your child if she lives primarily with you. The way not to win a case is to focus on what a bad parent and person the other parent is. In this case, the child was about to enter kindergarten and mom and dad lived in two separate school districts and both parents wanted the child to live primarily with them. I represented the father. For the first five years of the child’s life, the boy lived primarily with his mother, but spent about 45% of his time with dad. I represented the dad. The dad lived in the same home, and with the same woman for the entirety of his son’s life. The mom, while she lived in the same home, had four significant men in her life in the boy’s five years of his life. While mom was, by all accounts, a “good mom,” she lacked the stability in her life that was present with dad. Furthermore, mom could never say anything good about dad. As a result, the judge switched primary custody and the boy now lives with his dad and spends about 45% of his time with mom. The lack of stability bothered the court, but what really bothered the court is that mom could never say anything good about the man who was the father of November December 2014
