ommunity News He kept journals of his natural history observations almost until he died and what he didnβt know about Worcestershireβs natural world wasnβt worth knowing!
pioneering Worcestershire naturalist has been honoured in a ceremony to mark the 50th anniversary of Worcestershireβs largest nature conservation charity.
βHe was initially interested in birds but this soon expanded and he had a working knowledge of plants, fungi and dragonflies. He wrote the countyβs first account on crickets and grasshoppers.
Fred Fincher MBE, who lived in Dodford for almost 60 years, was one of Worcestershire Wildlife Trustβs founding fathers when the charity was established in 1968.
βFred used to cycle everywhere but in his later years there were so many people who wanted to learn from him that he was never short of a lift to discover the countyβs more far-flung places.β
The committees of the Trustβs Bromsgrove and Wyre Forest volunteer supporter groups organised a plaque at the location of Mr Fincherβs former home, Randan Wood. Mr Fincher donated the woodland to the Trust in 1968 and it became the first of almost 100 parcels of land that the Trust now manage. Harry Green, who has been involved with the organisation as a volunteer and trustee since its formation, explained βFred was quite an extraordinary man.
Fred Fincher was born in the Black Country on 23rd June 1901 but moved to Dodford in 1934, building a bungalow in Randan Wood and running a small chicken farm with his mother. He wrote the βIn Field, Wood and Hedgerowβ column in the Bromsgrove Messenger for more than 30 years. It was Fred Fincher who discovered Eades Meadow and Fosters Green farm near
Hanbury; noticing a field full of wildflowers as he cycled by. This series of fields where one farmer had resisted the wartime push for ploughing hay meadows and pastures, is now a National Nature Reserve and a jewel in the grasslands crown of Worcestershire. Fred and wife Alice Gill on the day that Eades Meadow became a National Nature ReserveHarry added βFred was the greatest all-round naturalist that Worcestershire has ever produced and he has been sorely missed. Modern wildlife conservation in the county has been built from the foundation of his knowledge. βAs the Trust celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, it is entirely fitting that our local supporter groups in the area have organised a plaque in his honour β to celebrate a wonderful man and 50 years of wildlife conservation in the county starting from this one small woodland.β In 1984 Mr Fincher was awarded an MBE in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the conservation and study of Worcestershireβs wildlife.

Primrose Hospice At Home Service
An independent charity supporting patients and families living with a life-limiting illness, across North East Worcestershire. We are a Day Hospice, Family Support Service and Primrose at Home Service. We rely on donations to provide our services for free. Primrose at Home is a free service to support people at the end stages of life who wish to be cared for in their own home. The service aims to complement and support the existing care being provided by the family and perhaps other agencies. Our team of experienced Health Care Assistants provides short day or full night shift support. This enables the family some respite by allowing them to leave the home, rest during the day or sleep at night, secure in the knowledge that their loved one is being safely looked after by professional carers. Primrose at Home shifts are dependent upon assessment and on the particular needs of the patient and their family. The service is flexible to accommodate as far as possible individual needs. Referrals into the Primrose at Home Service are usually made by a District Nurse or a MacMillan Nurse. If you would like any further information or would like to make a referral please contact either Helen Watson, Primrose at Home Manager or Tina Andress, Primrose at Home Administrator on 01527 871051
