HS MALVERN SPRING FESTIVAL 2018 is set to take visitors on a journey of discovery. Following on from this year’s hugely successful celebration of Malvern’s heritage as a Victorian spa resort, inspiration for next year’s show is being drawn from The Great Exhibition of 1851. Hosted at the Three Counties Showground in Malvern, from May 10-13, and set against the backdrop of the picturesque Malvern Hills, the theme for 2018 will bring the influences of The Great Exhibition into 21st century living. Head of Show, Diana Walton, said: “We're channelling the spirit of the Great Exhibition with plenty of innovation, education and a spectacular day out. There’ll be so much for visitors to explore. We’re also linking into the ambition of the Great Exhibition and hoping that just as its influence lived on long after the event, our visitors will have such a memorable day it will leave a lasting impression for many years to come.” The town of Malvern was put into the global spotlight in 1851 when its prized waters formed the Great Exhibition centrepiece. AVONCROFT MUSEUM Welcome to the first instalment of our series called an inside look. Every month we will be choosing a local attraction to visit and offer an inside look as to what’s on and what to expect. With Summer drawing to a close it is important to try and make the most of the dwindling light and sunshine, that’s why this month we will be looking at a local open-air museum: Avoncroft Museum. This unique museum displays rescued buildings which have been relocated to its site in Stoke Heath, it was Founded in 1963 and opened in 1967, the museum was conceived following the dismantling of a 15th-century timber-framed house in Bromsgrove in 1962 to provide a location for its reconstruction. It became England’s first openair museum and the second in the United Kingdom. The buildings and structures at the museum were all moved there to save them from demolition they would

have faced in their previous locations, either through wilful destruction or neglect. Together, they represent over 700 years of history from the Midlands and a little further beyond. Avoncroft’s priority is to retain historic buildings in their original location. Over five decades, Avoncroft Museum has continued to rescue structures where this had not been achievable. The Museum

now displays and cares for over 30 historic buildings and structures. As well as the buildings you can find beautiful gardens and wildlife and plenty going on. Just last month there was a very popular jousting event, and many workshops. One of this months workshops include one called herbal remedies through the ages. You can Explore how medieval herbal remedies were prepared and find out more about the beliefs that surrounded them. Our expert practitioner will guide you through how and why many herbal remedies were used and relate this to the present day use of a wide range of plantbased tinctures, ointments and draughts.The museum is open Tuesday-Sunday from 10:30am – 5:00pm, the same applies to the wonderful Edwardian Tea Room.
