iglis Nominated For Britain’s Best Walking Neighbourhood Award
A suburb in Worcester is in the running to be crowned the best place to walk in the UK. Diglis has been nominated for the Britain’s Best Walking Neighbourhood Award. No other area of the Midlands is included in the shortlist. The environment is one of Worcestershire’s key features and the county boasts many parks, open spaces and the rolling Malvern Hills. Councillor Tony Miller, Cabinet Member Responsible for the Environment, said: “Picturesque Diglis is a great example of a walking neighbourhood and I’m delighted that the area has been nominated for a national award. “As an ex resident of Portland Street, Diglis I can say the River Severn is enchanting. Watching
ommunity News the kingfishers, the salmon jumping at the weir and the marvellous variety of fauna and flora makes this location a delightful visit with a short hop to the city centre, so I would invite you along with myself to support this nomination. “Worcestershire’s neighbourhoods, country parks, open spaces and woodlands provide great walking opportunities which support the County Council’s health and well-being vision.” Ten neighbourhoods have been shortlisted for the awards, created by the charity Ramblers, to celebrate the many neighbourhoods across the country that are deemed as being great for walking. Another of Worcestershire County Council’s priorities is to promote health and wellbeing amongst residents and walking and exercising in parks and open spaces goes towards helping people to achieve a good lifestyle. Over 5,600 hectares of public recreational space is available across the county, managed by the Council and partners,

which includes country parks, green spaces and picnic sites. There are approximately 64km of canals that are available for boating – alongside which there are towpaths for walking. The Council also manages over 4,600km of public rights of way, made up of footpaths, bridleways and byways. In August 2017 the County Council announced an extra £6 million into improving Worcestershire’s pavements. An extra £6.6 million is also being spent in Worcestershire to improve walking and cycling routes in Worcester town centre and Bromsgrove. Community News Small and medium sized businesses in the city can apply for a £1,000 grant when they take on a Worcester resident aged 16 – 24 years as their new apprentice. The grant is available at all entry levels, including higher level apprenticeships. “Businesses often tell us that finding and retaining young people with the right skills is a barrier to growth. Apprenticeships are the ideal solution, proving a cost-effective way to train and retain their future workforce,” says Cllr Geoff Williams, Vice Chair of Worcester City Council’s Place and Economic Sub Committee. “Our grant is here to make it even easier for Worcester businesses to recruit an apprentice.” Local recruitment firm Headturner Search (www. headturnersearch.co.uk) hired its first apprentice in September 2017. “As a new and young local business we were thrilled at our initial success. An apprentice was the obvious choice to support our rapidly growing company with local

emerging talent. Seeing our apprentice grow along with our company has been exciting and invaluable,” explains Director Sam Turner. The business recruited Aimee Farley-Higgs, who had sat A Levels earlier in the year securing grades B, B and C in maths, psychology and modern history. Aimee opted to pursue a level 3 apprenticeship in digital marketing, giving her solid workplace experience and an income whilst continuing to study. “After leaving Sixth Form I really wanted to gain valuable skills to develop a career,” says Aimee. “I also wanted my day to day job to be something I enjoyed doing and could see future development in. I was lucky enough to join Headturner Search at an exciting time and now I have a really diverse role. I now solely handle all of the day-to-day marketing, design, social media and advertising requirements of the business, and I’m looking forward to what the future holds”. Grand National 2018 History The Grand National at Aintree has been a British sporting institution since 1839. A horse called Lottery won the inaugural race and Captain Becher fell at a now world famous brook. In those days, horses jumped a stone wall, crossed ploughed land and finished over two hurdles. The course was founded by William Lynn, a syndicate head and proprietor of the Waterloo Hotel. He leased land in Aintree from William Molyneux, 2nd Earl of Sefton. Lynn set out a course and built a grandstand. Lord Sefton laid the foundation stone on 7 February 1829. The race was then known as the Grand Liverpool Steeplechase.
What date and time is the Grand National? In recent years the Grand National start times have been put back to 5:15pm and is now shown on ITV1. The later race time is mainly to attract more viewers as when the race was run around 4pm there were generally a lot of other sporting events – like football – going on at that time too. So now you can watch the Grand National at 5:15pm on Saturday 14th April 2018. As the Aintree gates open around 10:30am each day, racegoers will have plenty of time to get into the course before the first race. With bars and restaurants open all day, plus corporate boxes and suites offering lunch before the racing starts, then many racegoers will flock to the track between 10:30am and 11am in order to make the most of their day. The track will also have other entertainment going on so if you are attending the 2018 Grand National Meeting on any of the three days then be sure to explore. Generally, there are shops and stalls onsite that will sell anything things like racing fashion or racing memorabilia like pictures or books. Also look out for competitions dotted around the track – for example ‘Best Dressed Lady’, Best ‘Dressed Man’, or ‘Best Dressed Couple’. There can often be some decent sponsors prizes for the winners, like cash or even a car! To help you plan your Grand National Day here are the expected running times for each race over the three days.

Sell your house faster! Simple and low cost tips to make your house look more appealing.
It is no secret that spring is the best time to have the house on the market as it is the time in the year where there are the most people looking for a new home. When it comes to selling your house fast, it is important that your home is ready for the house viewings and looks its best. Here are some tips that could help your house look like a future home to potential buyers.
• • •
• • • •
Wash your windows- dirty windows can darken a house and make a room feel smaller. By cleaning your windows inside and out, you will make the whole house feel brighter and bigger. Get rid of clutter- tidy the house and get rid of odd things lying on the side. It is important that rooms look large and open. This also creates a space that the viewer can envisage their own furniture fitting within. Make it look like a home, yes declutter, but don’t make the place look cold and empty. Have a bit of colour to the house and personality, make it feel lived in. Throws and colourful cushions are a good way of doing this. Ensure bathrooms have clean towels and the bed is made. Homely details such as umbrella stands or a shoe mat can make a big difference. Giving your walls a fresh lick of paint will make the house feel fresh and clean Open a few windows in the house to give it some air Having flowers in the house will give it a nice, natural smell as well as good aesthetic appeal. Ensure the garden is tidy. A well-kept garden will show off the size of the garden and make it feel low maintenence.

Pershore Golden Jubilee Carnival - 50 Golden Years Spring Bank Holiday Monday 28th May Spring Bank Holiday Monday will see the popular Pershore Carnival celebrating “50 Golden Years” Mr Shepherd, Pershore Carnival Chairman said “The committee have worked really hard fundraising over the last nine months to be able to give Pershore a fantastic Jubilee Carnival. This year’s celebrations have a golden theme as we are celebrating 50 consecutive years of Carnival in Pershore” Pershore Carnival in its current form started in 1968. Following the tragic drowning of a Pershore child in the River Avon the people of Pershore got together to raise funds to build a new swimming pool. This was done through a series of events in the town, including the Pershore Town Carnival as well as many others. The Avon Valley Swimming Pool Association (AVSPA) was formed, driven by local people and fundraising events continued to raise money for the new pool. The Pershore Carnival continued annually and, through the goodwill of the People of Pershore and the local area in combination with the other events, AVSPA raised the target amount to build the new pool, which Princess Alexandra officially opened in the heart of the town on King George Fields. Mr Shepherd went on to say “Pershore Carnival is not just a traditional family day out, it also raises money for a nominated organisation via the street bucket collection which takes place during the Carnival procession. This year’s recipient is Pershore Sea Cadets” Carnival Day officially starts with a parade of floats through the Town of Pershore to the grounds of Abbey Park where there will stalls and entertainment to suit all ages, including a funfair and food stalls. There will be a variety of fantastic free entertainment throughout the day, including the Paws for Thought Dog Display Team, street dancing performed by Dance Challenge, a fabulous craft tent and kids workshops provided by Junkfish plus live music. St. George’s Day Monday 23rd April
E
very nation has its own ‘Patron Saint’ who in times of great peril is called upon to help save the country from its enemies. St David is the patron saint of Wales, St Andrew of Scotland and St Patrick of Ireland – St George being the patron saint of England. But who was St. George, and what did he do to become England’s Patron Saint? Very little is known about St. George’s life, but it is thought he was a high ranking officer in the Roman army who was killed in around AD 303.
It seems that the Emperor Diocletian had St. George tortured to make him deny his faith in Christ. However despite some of the most terrible torture even for that time, St George showed incredible courage and faith and was finally beheaded near Lydda in Palestine. His head was later taken to Rome where it was interred in the church dedicated to him. Stories of his strength and courage soon spread throughout Europe. The best-known story about St. George is his fight with a dragon, but it is highly unlikely that he ever fought a dragon, and even more unlikely that he ever visited England, however his name was known there as early as the eighth-century. In the Middle Ages the dragon was commonly used to represent the Devil. Unfortunately the many legends connected with St. George’s name are fictitious, and the slaying of the ‘Dragon’ was first credited to him in the 12th century. St. George, so the story goes, killed a dragon on the flat topped Dragon Hill in Uffington, Berkshire, and it is said that no grass grows where the dragon’s blood trickled down! It was probably the 12th century Crusaders however who first invoked his name as an aid in battle. King Edward III made him the Patron Saint of England when he formed the Order of the Garter in St. George’s name in 1350, and the cult of the Saint was further advanced by King Henry V, at the battle of Agincourt in northern France. Shakespeare made sure that nobody would forget St. George, and has King Henry V finishing his pre-battle speech with the famous phrase, ‘Cry God for Harry, England and St. George!’ King Henry himself, who was both warlike and devout, was thought by his followers to possess many of the saint’s characteristics. In England St. George’s Day is celebrated, and his flag flown, on his feast day, April 23rd. By Ben Johnson, www.historic-uk.com

Close to 48 years ago, on 22 April 1970, millions of people took to the streets to protest the negative impacts of 150 years of industrial development. In the US and around the world, smog was becoming deadly and evidence was growing that pollution led to developmental delays in children. Biodiversity was in decline as a result of the heavy use of pesticides and other pollutants. Earth Day is now a global event each year, and we believe that more than 1 billion people in 192 countries now take part in what is the largest civic-focused day of action in the world. It is a day of political action and civic participation. People march, sign petitions, meet with their elected officials, plant trees, clean up their towns and roads. Corporations and governments use it to make pledges and announce sustainability measures. Faith leaders, including Pope Francis, connect Earth Day with protecting God’s greatest creations, humans, biodiversity and the planet that we all live on.

The Big Three Preview All 32 World Cup countries have played their final games before they have to file their provisional squads, as an action-packed international break comes to an end. Hat-tricks, thrashings, tactical concerns, selection dilemmas - it’s been a revealing week about some of the contenders for the trophy. We now look at the three favourites to see how they are shaping up for the summer in Russia. Brazil - The big question is about the availability of Neymar, who Brazil are hopeful will make the World Cup. Their fourth top scorer of all time, despite only being 26, is recovering from successful surgery on a broken foot and might not return for Paris St-Germain this season. Brazil have great strength in depth in some areas - Gabriel Jesus and Roberto Firmino are probably battling for one starting spot up front. Germany - One of the main questions about their squad is will Manuel Neuer be fit from his broken metatarsal in time? Their undoubted first-choice keeper before his injury has not played since September - but the form of Marc-Andre ter Stegen means he might have to settle for a place on the bench, if he returns at all. In Timo Werner, who has scored seven goals in 12 caps, they finally have the proper striker they missed in their Euro 2016 semi-final run.

Film Review
I recently attended the greatest showman in a local cinema, I was somewhat apprehensive after reading about the film being musical with Zak Efron I half expected High School musical number 4. I was pleasantly surprised however with such an outstanding performance from Zak along side the always brilliant Hugh Jackman. The two leading men have an excellent performance capturing the audience in an emotional rollercoaster through excitement and glee to sadness and despair. The film itself was spectacular with the musical number proving to be catchy and well encompassed within the well structured story line. With powerful female characters alongside the boys such as Anne Wheeler (Zendaya), Rebecca Ferguson (Jenny Lind) and the outstanding Keala Settle (Lettie Lutz) all putting in outstanding vocal performances with songs you can’t help but want to join in with. In conclusion the greatest showman lives up to its name of the greatest show with something for everyone. A must see in my book!

Formula One 2018 Preview F1 in 2018: Australian GP offers hope and ambiguity about the season ahead Reflecting on what was learnt in the season-opener in Melbourne and what wasn't, and why the race winner may not like his new car... Lewis Hamilton made no attempt to disguise his confusion after losing the Australian GP to Ferrari rival Sebastian Vettel. "I'm still in a little bit of disbelief as I don't really understand what happened," said a perplexed Hamilton as he reflected on the season opener. Defeated in a race he had under control, and beaten chiefly by a faulty computer algorithm, Hamilton's confusion was understandable. But the Mercedes driver's disbelief was also in keeping with a weekend which asked as many questions as it answered and offered little in the way of definitive conclusions about what might await in F1 2018. With Mercedes beaten in a race they had in their grasp, Vettel victorious but not yet fond of his new car, and Red Bull quick but handicapped, F1's opening 2018 salvo was at turns intriguing, promising and ambiguous.

When A Loved One Passes When a love one passes away we are left feeling lost and alone. Such a devastating event turns our world upside down. Understanding what grief is, experts say is crucial to overcoming the grief. It is important to recognise how you are feeling and to be able to come to terms with those feelings. There is no single way to grieve, everyone will experience grief differently. Dr Phil identifies how to deal with grief in simple steps in his book, Real Life: Preparing for the 7 Most Challenging Days of Your Life. 1. Be Patient With Yourself It is important to understand that grief has no understanding of time. While it may take some months, it may take others years to stop feeling grief. It is important to focus on the present, do small tasks throughout the day, have weekly goals to focus on. Keep one foot in front of the other.
6. Recognize That Time Is Infinite Carpe Diem. Seize the day! See time as a currency that you have to spend. Make time for friends and family and for doing the things you love. Tick things off your bucket list. Do the skydive you’ve always wanted or take a holiday. 7. Create Value From This Experience Learn from this experience, remember how you got yourself through it. Think about what you learnt about yourself. 8. Think About How You Will Prepare for Your Own Death Make sure your family know what to do when the time comes. Prepare yourself financially and make a will.
2. Adjust Your Expectations Grief is different to everyone, don’t let yourself or anyone else have expectations on how long or in what way you should grief. 3. Accept What You Cannot Change There will be a big feeling of being helpless, and a lot of things will be out of your control. A big part of grieving is being able to accept the things you can’t change and focus on things that you can. 4. Find Strength In Others Friends and family will be of most importance to you in such a situation. Open up to those who have had similar experiences. Talk about your emotions, they may have great advice. 5. Don’t Get Stuck Don’t get stuck within the negativity. Find a new hobby, get back into work when you feel ready, if needed, see your doctor.
59
10. Celebrate Life! Remember all the happy memories you and your loved one shared. Celebrate their life as well as yours. Your loved one would not want you to remain unhappy. Just remember to take things slowly, accept the pain you are feeling but also look forward to the future and live in the now. Adapted from Dr. Phil’s book Real Life: Preparing for the 7 Most Challenging Days of Your Life.
RSPCA Worcester & Mid-Worcestershire Branch has three fundraising shops, all raising the much needed funds to support our new centre and local animal welfare work. Volunteering is most rewarding and if you would like to become part of our volunteer force, we do need extra help in our shops in St Johns, Upton and Bromsgrove. We are also looking for more volunteer homevisitors in all parts of the county to visit potential homes to assess their suitability to adopt our rescued animals. Full training will be given. For any enquiries, please contact Geraldine on 01886 822083.
Pet Of The Month Kimiko is a sweet 2 year old girl, who was found in a member of the public’s garden. We feel that Kimiko was likely to have been abandoned as her body condition indicated that she had not been outdoors for very long at all and was in fact SO overweight at first we thought she may be pregnant. She has gone from lethargic and worried about touch to an adventurous, confident girl who loves hopping down the hallway and saying hi to her fellow resident bunnies. She still has some way to go on her weight loss plan, but she is looking better by the day! Please call The Holdings on 07484 905 707 for more information about rehoming any of our rabbits.
