The teenagers looking forward to returning home for the holidays to indulge in their mum’s notorious cooking and even the tired parents who can enjoy some quiet time in the evening. Of course, everyone shares in the excitement of easter day and that’s partly to do with the copious amounts of chocolate and treats we allow ourselves to endulge in. Most people think that a chocolate egg at Easter is a modern day thing, probably introduced in the middle 20th Century. In fact chocolate Easter Eggs first started to appear in the early 1800’s although they were fairly basic with gritty dark chocolate and a world apart from the modern day ones we eat today. It wasn’t until 1873 that the first mass-produced egg appeared, courtesy of Cadbury’s of course, and we had to wait until 1905 for the first milk chocolate egg to appear.
One thing that makes Easter such a special day is that it is enjoyed by everyone: the excited child full of energy after a bounty of goodies delivered by the Easter bunny. The grandparents who

ST GEORGES DAY IN WORCESTERSHIRE
bravery and gallantry. St George’s embelem the red cross, was brought to England by Richard the Lionheart in the 12th century. Very little is known about St George, who wasn’t actually English! He is thought to have been born in Eastern Turkey in the year AD 270. He was a Christian and soon joined the Roman army where he was quickly renowned and rewarded for his bravery. It wasn’t until the 14th Century when St George became the Patron saint of England. Our country isn’t the only one who has St George as our patron saint – Aargon, Catalonia, Ethiopia, Georgia, Greece, Lithuania, Palestine, Portugal and Russia all have St George as their patron saint.
Everybody at The Worcestershire Echo would like to send best wishes to everyone celebrating St George’s Day. On this day, up and down the country, the flag of St George will be flying high and celebrations, from the archaic to the eccentric, will be taking place. Here are some things you may not have known about him. St George, the patron saint of England, identifies with popular English ideals such as honour,
St George has been England’s patron saint since 1350. But for too long, his feast day -- England’s national day -- has been overlooked. But on this day more and more people are coming together on or around April the 23rd, eager to celebrate everything it is to be English. Turn over to see what’s happening in Worcestershire for St George’s day.

THE GRAND NATIONAL SATURDAY 8TH APRIL 5.15PM With the glory and prestige of Cheltenham festival fading away it’s the popularity and excitement of the Grand National takes its place. The Grand National, for the ones who are not familiar with it, is a one off race which grabs the attention of most of the population. If somebody were to watch one racing event each year, it would be The Grand National. This highlight of the Aintree Festival is a handicap steeplechase over 4 miles and 3 and a half furlongs with horses jumping an impressive 30 fences over 2 laps. The event also holds the title for the most valuable jump race in Europe with a prize fund of £1 million. Many fans will be hoping to get lucky, and if you want to give yourself some extra ‘luck’, follow these tips on how
to choose the winner. Form When it comes to form, you need to look closely at how a horse has been preforming for the last couple of seasons. Keep an eye out for 1, 2 or 3s in its form figures and be aware of U, F or P. The numbers represent the position in previous races and the letters indicate those who fall, unseat their riders or refuse. The 2014 winner, Pineau De Re, had only fallen once in the two years prior to his big win and had never pulled up, refused or unseated his jockey at any point in his entire career. Age The Aintree Grand National fences require a level of maturity and stamina from the horses that usually comes with age and experience. So first off, eliminate all of those horses that
are younger than nine or older than 11 years of age. In the last 20 years 17 of the winners were aged between 9 and 11. Aintree Factor It really does help if the horse you have backed has previously run and done well at Aintree, preferably over the Grand National Fences. So, whether they’ve run the race in the past or taken part in the Becher Chase or the Topham Chase, if they’ve successfully navigated the course and finished the race then it proves they have the jumping ability to make it around again. Combining all these should help your chances of picking the winner, but remember that Horse racing remains one of the most open contests in sport. Here are some of our tips for the big day:

New art project, True Tales, brings stories to thecounty
A new art project has sterted that is looking to capture and explore the stories of people from Eastern Europe who have come to live in Evesham and the surrounding area. Arts Uplift, a community interest company specialising in arts, health and heritage, is looking to talk to people around the theme ‘New Beginnings and Journeys’ and is hoping to hear from people who perhaps initially travelled to work in the Vale and have since chosen to settle in the area. Jenny Davis, from Arts Uplift, said: “We think people who have travelled here and settled to become part of their community will have a great story to tell. It is part of an arts project
that will also be part of the Evesham Festival of Words in the summer.” Once the stories have been recorded, the artist Caz Tredwell will interpret these into an amazing exhibition that will be on display at Evesham Library from 19 June. Other stories are coming from young people and older people who live in Evesham. If you are interested in getting involved in this project, please contact Jenny Davis on 07946 585978 or e-mail jenny@artsplift.co.uk.
Hard-hitting campaign to help tackle homelessness Redditch residents are being asked to consider if their kind actions are really helping to tackle homelessness as part of a hard-hitting campaign launched by the borough council. A series of posters are set to be displayed across Redditch and via social media, which asks if giving cash, refreshments and clothes
to homeless people is actually stopping them getting off the streets for good. This follows the appearance of a makeshift ‘camp’ in the borough which has sparked concerns from residents. The posters signpost residents to the borough council’s website where there is information on how they can really help.

Pershore Carnival starts with a quack!
Sunday 9th April 2017 will again see Pershore going “Quakers” as Pershore Carnival once again hold its popular fundraising Duck Race at King George’s Field in Pershore. “It’s quite a sight, 1000 yellow plastic ducks racing down the River Avon with everyone shouting their ducks number, its fantastic” said Colin Shepherd, Chairman of Pershore Carnival. “As we have been holding this successful fundraiser
for a number of years now and it is increasing in popularity we have introduced some new features to the day. We will be having traditional children’s races on King George’s Field and an Easter Egg Tombola inside the football club.” This is the 49th year that Carnival has been running, organised entirely by a dedicated group of Pershore people, to benefit the people of Pershore and surrounding villages. We rely on our fundraising efforts and donations to be able to make Carnival happen so I would urge you all to join in the fun. It really is going to be another quack-tastic day. Tickets are just £2.00 per duck with cash prizes of £100, £75 and £25 are available on the day at Pershore Football Club from 9:30am (last tickets 11:30am) where refreshments and a bar will be available with the Duck Race starting at 12:00 noon. SUITCASE STORIES TO BE TOLD The dates and locations are as follows:
Wychavon District Council has given its support to a countywide project to help people with dementia. Suitcase Stories is a project being run by Museums Worcestershire that has enabled adults living with dementia and their carers to relive memories from the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s using the art of storytelling and reminiscence. Through special workshops, participants in Suitcase Stories have been holding, touching, smelling and feeling objects such as carbolic soap and old pictures from the Royal Family, which all came from the Museums Worcestershire collections. Their reactions to the objects, which all fell into the themes of holidays, nature, hair and beauty, food, hobbies and family, have helped to inspire stories for storyteller Gavin Young to create a live performance of storytelling and music. Three performances have been arranged and they will take place at three dementia cafes across Worcestershire.
Redditch, Wednesday 3 May, from 11.45am at Masonic Hall, Easmore Road, B98 8ER. For more information and to book a place at any of the free live performances, please contact Jenny Davis, the Suitcase Stories Project Manager, on 07946 585978 or email jenny@artsuplift. co.uk. Surroo is born into a poor, but loving family in rural India. A trip into the city with his brother to find work ends up with Surroo being trapped alone
on a train and starts a twenty- five year journey to return home. Surroo ends up amongst the many street children of Bengal, but is offered a new beginning in Australia, when he is adopted by a kindly couple from Tasmania. Surroo is soon joined in his new home by Mantosh, a disturbed Indian adoptee and the film then jumps twenty years to Melbourne where Surroo starts University. Surroo finds love with a student, but away from his adopted parents and the simplicity of Tasmanian life, Surroo’s past starts to haunt him. The once carefree child and sociable student begins to withdraw from all around him as Surroo becomes increasingly preoccupied by his identity and the quest to figure out the location of his birthplace. MODS VS ROCKERS II
It’s back by popular demand! The unique show that presents the music that divided the greatest decade in pop history into two rival youth cultures. Mods vs Rockers is a spectacular music event where two great bands battle it out to see which musical style will come out the winner. Sparks are sure to fly as both bands will take to the stage together to trade tunes and see whose music
should be crowned as the best of the 50s and 60s. Are you a Mod or are you a Rocker? Are you a Rocker? Does your world rock to the sound of the rockabilly beat? Then don your leather jacket, rev up your bike and show your support for the fabulous Del Ray Rockets, bringing to life the sounds of Elvis, Eddy Cochrane and all the kings of rock n’ roll. To be on the Rocker side, sit in seats 1-6. Or are you more of a Mod? If you like your suits sharp and your music even sharper, slip on your shades and get on your scoot to support the The Quik Beats, playing the A to Z of beat music from the Animals to the Zombies. To be on the Mod side, sit in seats 9-14. If you are unsure, sit in 7+8!

HOW TO INCREASE THE NUMBER OF POLLINATORS IN YOUR GARDEN
I
t has been discussed and it is generally acknowledged that pollinators are in decline. Pollinators are insects that transfer pollen from one plant to another and therefore are vital for food production, gardens and ensuring a healthy and diverse ecosystem; as we depend on food and a healthy and diverse ecosystem, so do our pollinators. According to the RHS website, ‘over 1500 insect species are thought to carry out pollen services in the UK. This includes bees, hoverflies, butterflies and moths and some beetles’. Bees rely on a diverse food supply in order to survive and there are a number of factors which threaten that for bees. These problems, which threaten all pollinators, are things like an increase of destruction of their natural habitats, an increase in use of pesticides and the threat of diseases. So what can gardeners do to
help? One important thing we can do to help our pollinators is to not use insecticide on plants which are in flower. Insecticide used on a flowering plant can be a danger to pollinating insects because the chemicals can be transferred whilst they are collecting pollen. Another way to encourage bees and pollinators is by planting
Attract them “with colourful
petals. Purple flowers are best for Bees
”
nectar and pollen rich plants: tubular plants such as foxglove are favourite feeding places for bumblebees and single flowers are more attractive to pollinators for their big surfaces and colourful petals. Bees can see purple flowers particularly well. We can rebuild destroyed habitats for solitary pollinators. These are (more recently referred to) ‘bug hotels’. It
36
can be a great way to involve children with wildlife as by building one of these ‘hotels’ we can encourage everyone to take part. Water, the nectar of life, can be provided in the way of having a shallow dish filled with stones and water. Pollinators will sometimes need to drink and this will provide a safe drinking ground for them with somewhere to rest if the stones are above the water. In 2014, the UK Government introduced The National Pollinator Strategy (England). Its vision is ‘to see pollinators thrive, so they can carry out their essential service to people of pollinating flowers and crops, while providing other benefits for our native plants, the wider environment, food production and all of us’. I hope that we can all respect this enough to take active steps to ensure pollinators have the resources to complete their important role within our ecosystem. Daisey McQuaid

BEN IS DOING IT FOR LEWIS - HIS STORY
I don’t know about you but for some reason I felt the need to really challenge myself physically and mentally this year. So, I went and entered a 22 mile obstacle race going up and over Snowdonia Mountain. After entering I saw that you can raise money for a chosen charity but this year I wanted to do it slightly different. I wanted to raise a hell of a lot of money for someone and see it go directly to improving their life. Then I was introduced to Lewis, after seeing his journey and how his family are working hard to raise money for him to undergo surgery which will drastically improve his quality of life. I wanted to be part of that journey which is why I am doing this run for Lewis. The race has 5055ft of climbing throughout and I aim to raise £1 per every foot. This is where I need your help, please if you can make a donation of what you can it will be truly appreciated not just by me but by Lewis and his family too.
Also you won’t just be keeping that sweet little smile on Lewis’s face but you will have the satisfaction of knowing that this race will do its best to break me into nothing but a quivering wreck calling out for his mother, ha. Here’s the link; https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/ bengosspt Also this is Lewis, he is my motivation for the next 7 months:

MINDGAMES
A mind bending psychological thriller from the pen of Anthony Horowitz is set to appear at Malvern Theatres. Mindgame starring Andrew Ryan as Mark Styler alongside Michael Sherwin as Dr. Farquhar and Sarah Wynne Kordas as Nurse Paisley will be on stage from Tuesday 11th to Saturday 15th April. When a writer of pulp crime novels gets an interview with a notorious serial killer he believes he has snared the coup of his career. But when
he arrives at the asylum, he finds nothing can be trusted, not even his own eyes. Through a series of lies, manipulations and memories, dark secrets are revealed. Where did the raw meat in the fridge come from? Why isn’t the skeleton in the closet? British novelist and screenwriter Anthony Horowitz is the creator of Foyles War, the BBC’s New Blood, Alex Rider, the Sherlock Holmes novels House of Silk and Moriarty and the James Bond novel Trigger Mortis. ‘Keeps you guessing and marvelling from its deceptively normal opening to its fearful climax’ THE STAGE ‘Probes the terror of madness…while exhibiting a roguish love of the comedic macabre.’ LONDON EVENING STANDARD

An inside look at:
SEVERN VALLEY RAILWAY As Spring is popping up it’s time to cast our gase towards the outdoor’s in our inside looks. This month it’s the fantastic Severn Valley Railway. The Severn Valley Railway is a heritage railway in Kidderminster. The 16-mile heritage line runs along the
“The railway is
one of the most popular heritage railways in the country” Severn Valley from Bridgnorth to Kidderminster following the course of the River Severn for much of its route. Train services are hauled predominantly by beautiful steam locomotives. The railway is one of the most popular heritage railways in the country as well as being the sixth-longest standard gauge heritage line in the United Kingdom. It hosts numerous
special events throughout the year, including both steam and diesel galas. Your visit can start at either Kidderminster or Bridgnorth. Starting at Kidderminster you can take the 10.30am departure for Bridgnorth which arrives at 11.37am. After a short visit, catch the 12.25pm departure for Highley, arriving at 12.54pm. This option not only gives time for a good visit to The Engine House but also allows time for you to walk down to the riverside and across the ‘Miners Bridge’ for an afternoon stroll in the Severn Valley Country Park. WHEN A LOVED ONE PASSES AWAY
Knowing what to do when someone passes away is always one of those experiences for which in life we never become an expert in, as most of us will only arrange on average between 1-2 funerals in our lifetime. As well as having to cope emotionally there can seem to be lots of decisions that you have to make in a short period of time. In the initial days depending on where the person has passed away will depend on what you need to do next and speaking with friends and family or the funeral director is a good way to get advice. It always seems like there is lot’s to do on top of making the initial arrangements and it can be important to give yourself time to make the right decision for you. The best advice when looking for a funeral is always to shop around to make sure you get the service which you are looking for and
that is right for you. There will be many people who are there to support you from Clergy to Civil Celebrants, Grief counselling as well as your initial contact with the funeral director you choose. On this page are funeral services available to you in the local community.

WEDDING ENTERTAINMENT COULD MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE
Wedding entertainment can be often overlooked as an afterthought that consists merely of “Let’s just book a DJ”, despite this entertainment can make or break a wedding. It is important because it breaks the ice between tables of strangers, it is for all ages and, if done properly, can reflect your personality and can be the talking point for a long time afterwards. Every wedding is unique, so the entertainment should be too. Your wedding day has
a timeline and is made up of several different parts; each part can be accompanied with entertainment whether it’s live music or quirky entertainment like a magician or a chocolate fondue fountain. It can be a choir for the ceremony itself, a string quartet for your reception and a party band for the evening entertainment. This can get expensive and one way to overcome this is to book bands that include a DJ for the evening entertainment; minimising the amount of suppliers will automatically minimize cost, so think smart! Another thing to keep in mind when choosing entertainment is the age of your audience, as the suitability can alter. When it comes to music, written descriptions of a band’s personality or style aren’t enough: you’ll want to see them in action before booking to ensure that they are right for your big day. Finally…make sure your acts are looked after!

Spring cleaning for the elderly Spring is upon us, it’s official! Springtime is usually a time for getting rid of unwanted bits and pieces and sorting out things you want to keep. With the lighter days coming we tend to notice the clutter that was well forgotten over the winter months. Well where to start first. Clutter is always a good one to start with as once this is out of the way everything starts to look a bit more organised. Objects around the floor areas may be worth looking through and throwing out. Maybe an old pile of magazines or some old books have mysteriously found their way onto the floor or your magazine rack has become very full.

Not good really as you may trip on them so why not get rid of the magazines and papers into the recycling box and give your old books to charities who are always happy to accept them.

How about some clearing out of clothes whilst you’re at it. Always nice to get rid of clothes you don’t wear and these can either go to your local charity shops or recycling centre. Nowadays there are some companies that pay for clothes by the weight! So if you have enough of them you could take your clothes to them and maybe earn yourself a few pounds. There are lots of products to help cleaning quicker and easier such as disposable anti- bacterial wipes so no need for even water nowadays. Kitchen cupboards and fridges may harbour a few forgotten items that have gone out of date so it may be a good idea to check the dates, even tins of food have an expiry date. Putting heavy things to the front of your cupboards and on accessible shelves may help you when you need to get to them. Again, you could put the old tins into the recycling box and your council will take them so this will save a bit of time and effort. Small jobs like wiping off salt and pepper pots, cleaning off ketchup bottles are nice easy jobs that can be done
sitting down should you get a bit tired. Also tidying through old documents with a shredder beside you is another nice job to do infront of the TV and something you can spend your time on without being too stressful. Thejobs mentioned are all quite small but it’s surprising how little things like this can make a bigdifference to making you feel empowered and ready to move onto the next step, enjoying summer! Oh happy days.

WORCESTER REVIEW OF THE MONTH: Café Afloat April is often associated with rain showers, but Food is sourced locally by Jacqui and Chris, who being outside near water can be a refreshing experience at Café Afloat.
are currently steering Café Afloat’s family run history of eight years.
Moored in Diglis main basin, Café Afloat offers food and drinks either on board a wide beam canal boat or sat in a canal side terrace.
A simple and wholesome menu works well as breakfast or lunch. I had a couple of rounds of toasted home – made granary bread, followed by a ‘Boaty’ BLT and a slice of delicious home - made Lime and Coconut Cake, washed down with a Marimba hot chocolate de- luxe melt. Al fresco dining at just over eleven pounds in the company of families, ducks, seagulls and even a cat strolled by, tempted by sun and smell. Café Afloat is located at the end of Basin Road and can be reached on foot or road parking. Seasonal hours apply and it is currently open Tuesday to Sunday 10 to 3pm. Stuart Bryan

POSITIVE PSYCHOLOGY
Worcester recently topped an independent ‘happiest city’ in the UK survey and indeed there is much to celebrate locally. However, nationally, stress related ill -health is reported as rising and world affairs seem to be increasingly precarious. The result can be a growing negative view of one self and the world around us. An antidote to real or imagined fear is the growing emergence of positive psychology.
the old world of a fixed mind-set into the new world of a growth mind-set. As Richards says, ‘We are better able to understand and utilise our capacities to sky-rocket the development of an abundant life.’ To find out more about positive psychology practice contact Huw Richards at www.huwrichardscoaching.com Stuart Bryan
Positive psychology is based around the notion of discovering what is good in our lives and allowing our unique strengths to flourish. Local positive psychology expert Huw Richards explains more. ‘Positive psychology is a seventeen - year old movement and comes from many of us knowing very little about what truly enables us to fly and flourish’. Taking a strength based development approach, positive psychology can allow us to step out of

Steve's Fitness tip of the month Walking Lunges
With a set distance in front of you, stand up straight and upright, both feet together. Take a controlled step forward with one leg and make sure that you take a decent lunge or stride forward. Lower your hips towards the floor bending both knees to almost 90 degrees. POINTERS The back knee should come close but never actually touch the ground, whilst the front knee should be directly over the ankle but not in front of your toe. Ensure both of your feet are always pointing forward. Then push off with your other foot, bringing it forward to a starting position. By continuing this you begin your walking lunge. WEIGHT: Add Weight to increase the intensity of the workout, add weight to the walking lunge. You can use dumbbells or you can add weight with a barbell on your back. The barbell is better suited for those who are advanced athletes. For those just starting out, hold a dumbbell in each hand while keeping both arms down at your sides. Simply perform the walking lunge exercise while
holding the weights in your hands. VARIATION :One More Point Here! This can be done with or without a medicine ball. Perform your first lunge while holding the medicine ball with both hands in front of your chest. Hold your lunge position and focus your body weight on the forward leg. While in this lunge position, lean forward slightly at your hips, stabilize your spine and twist your torso to the side opposite of your forward leg. Twist back to center; bring your back leg forward so that you are standing tall with the medicine ball out in front of your chest. Perform the lunge on the other leg and twist to the opposite side to work both legs evenly. For More Info Get In Touch

Sparkling new jewellery shop opens The couple scoped out the shop a few years ago and saw it as a perfect opportunity to expand into another local town.
A new jewellery shop called Malvern Goldsmiths was opened last month by the Mayor of Malvern. The sparkling shop is based on the beautiful Bellevue Terrace and is owned by Rodney Randle and Meihua Randle who also runs Quarter Jewellery in The Shambles, and has done for 15 years.
The quaint shop used to be a Victorian Pharmacy and retains its architectural beauty and even features vintage display cabinets and drawers. Rodney Randle has a lot of experience in the business, starting when he was just 17 so customers are sure to benefit from his knowledge and experience. The new shop will sell buy and sell antique and second-hand gold and diamond jewellery. Rodney told Retail Jeweller; “The reason I decided to open the shop is because I thought it would make an ideal jewellers.

We all know that we should take care of our car every week around the year, but if we are honest, how many of us actually check the water levels, and tyre pressure every week! However when it comes to the winter, a quick mini service, which anyone can do, may well save a lot of time, trouble and money. The top list is
• Check the anti freeze, this prevents the water coolant from freezing • Check windscreen wipers to ensure that in driving rain and snow you always have clear vision. • Check water level for windscreen washer, this will clear away the slush and dirt when driving in the snow. • Check tyre tread – including your spare, and ensure you have plenty of tread on your tyres to
cope with icy nd wet conditions. • Check the oil level • Check all lights and indicators and horn are working You will never know if you might ever get caught in a really cold snap so it is always worth carrying a blanket, a snow shovel, extra clothing and if you are going on a long journey, thena flask of hot drink would not go amiss.

It’s that time of the year - the start of the fascinating F1 season, and this time it’s bigger, faster and better than ever. The Formula 1 2017 Season has faced one of the biggest regulation changes since the introduction of the hybrid turbo power units back in 2014. Even though there have been many changes, the focus has remained on the bodywork with cars now looking better than ever and of course – the tyres which are centre of attention! On the track it was Ferrari taking centre stage and 1st place. What a start! We will keep you updated throughout the season, so watch this space.

Worcester Wolves looking good as unbeaten streak continues
The unbeaten streak continued for the Worcester Wolves, with four wins from their last four fixtures. First up was the BBL Trophy semi-final second leg against Plymouth Raiders. However, another trip to the Final wasn’t meant to be as despite a 90-83 victory, the first leg defeat was too much
and the Wolves lost 179-168 on aggregate. The final itself was won by Leicester Riders, who retained the trophy they won in 2016. In the BBL Championship, the Wolves recorded three wins, including a successful double header against Leeds Force. Surrey Scorchers were the first side to be defeated, as a close game ended with Wolves pulling away for an 89-77 victory. Next was Leeds Force at the University of Worcester Arena, where Wolves turned on the style for a resounding 112-62 victory. Finally, a trip to Leeds for the rematch saw the in-form Wolves produce another all-round team display to win 99-80. A tough run of fixtures lie ahead and the Wolves will need to continue their fine form to finish as high as they can, in preparation for the playoffs. Go Wolves! Daniel Bent
