Saturday 20th May 20 Car enthusiasts and families are in for a treat as Worcester’s 11th Annual Motor Festival is set to be the biggest one yet. The streets will be lined with stunning cars and rammed with petrolheads. You can see a wide variety of old and new vehicles from a range of dealers, motoring clubs and the county’s motor sport venue. As well as this there will be plenty of activities and experiences for both the young and old. There will be a programme of events to be released close to the event so keep an eye out on their Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ Worcmotorfest. The day will be jam packed of entertainment including live music, roving street entertainment, traditional dance performances and exciting race activities. All these activities will be occurring around the streets which will be full of a whole host of vehicles. The vehicles will include some of the newly released sports cars, SUVs and motorbikes as well. Fans of vintage and classical cars will also be treated to around 80 diﬀerent classic cars that span the 20th century. You’ll see familiar brands such as Daimler, Austin, Jaguar,

BBQ season is just around the corner and hosting a barbecue party is easier than it sounds, whether they are held in the back garden, a small balcony, or outside spaces where grills are available. You can also bring your own small grill to the park, beach or lawn of your building or park. A small barbecue on a crowded balcony is just as much fun as a big barbecue in the backyard! With England’s unpredictable weather you may encounter some rain, but don’t threat! Just grill and have everyone eat inside. It will still be fun, cheerful and delicious! Barbeque parties usually fall under two categories. They are either a big occasion or a small intimate get-together. Each

one is diﬀerent and requires diﬀerent preparation and execution. Large barbecue parties are perfect for a big get together for friends and family; it is more about the occasion and less about the food. Invite everyone you know and increase the length of the party to cater for the extra guests. It’s best to keep the food and the drink simple as there will be a lot to cater for. Beefburgers, hot dogs and chicken skewers with vegetables are best. Plan to have an equal amount of these three items and plan for 2-3 grilled items per guest. Trainee teachers at the University of Worcester are learning how to engage their future pupils in global issues, in light of a set of ambitious goals agreed by the United Nations.

Worcester to host the OVO Energy Tour of Britain this September The city of Worcester will host the start of the final stage of the OVO Energy Tour of Britain this September, as the race finishes outside London for the first time in five years. Stage Eight of Britain’s premier road cycling event on Sunday 10 September will start from the centre of Worcester, heading through

Worcestershire to finish in Cardiﬀ. The route through Worcestershire will include the likes of Pershore and Uptonupon-Severn, and cross the Malvern Hills at British Camp. A stage of the OVO Energy Tour of Britain last began in Worcester in 2014, when Michal Kwiatkowski won the leg ending in Bristol.

Wychavon District Council’s programme to get people to exercise and develop a sporting habit for life has been extended until March 2018. The Worcestershire LitFest & Fringe are back from the 9th- 18th of June for the 7th year of their show stopping line-up of literary delights. Hosted in a variety of venues across Worcestershire, the LiteraryFestival combines all kinds of genres and topics. PERSHORE CARNIVAL The Pershore Carnival is well on its way this Month with plenty happening. But before we look forward let’s look behind us and recap on a great opening to the festival. What a Quacking good day last month with nearly £900 being raised at the ever-popular Duck Race! The event which took place on the River Avon, Pershore, was held in aid of Pershore Carnival. George Williams Winnall age 2 from Drakes Broughton was the proud owner of the winning duck (No 35) and won £100 (sponsored by Hill View Ducks, Cropthorne). Mr Colin Shepherd, Chairman of Pershore Carnival said “I would like to thank everyone that came and supported the Duck Race, Pershore Football Club for hosting us, Hill View Ducks, Cropthorne & Pershore and District Sports and Social Club for their generous sponsorship, Plum

Each year Pershore Carnival raises money for charity through a street bucket collection which takes place during the procession. This year the recipient will be the Pershore Riverside Youth Centre – an absolutely fantastic asset to the town of Pershore and an invaluable resource to the youngsters and a great facility for local clubs to hire. Alex Mellor, Riverside Centre Development Manager said “Absolutely fantastic news. The centre, until four years ago, had been fully funded by the local authority. That funding is now greatly reduced and is to cease in 2019, so the news that we are to receive this support from Pershore Carnival is wonderful.” The Riverside Youth Centre got straight into the swing of things by hosting the Carnival Royalty Event on Sunday 26th February, to select the Carnival Royalty - a massive success.

Urban gardens are usually small areas which provide the challenge of bringing a rural atmosphere into the bustle of city life. Designing and producing a tranquil oasis whilst creating an illusion that the garden is bigger than what it actually is, is a daunting task but you do not need a large space to pull it off; what you do need is good soil, sunshine, water and determination. We start within the home as internal plants can be beneficial to our wellbeing; research suggests that plants can reduce stress, clean air and even quieten rooms! Within people’s homes, I have seen plants emerging from jam jars, terrariums as small as my palm and succulents dotted around the window sill. It is easy to bring tranquillity in to your busy home and bringing the

outdoors in is one way of doing it. If your aim is trick the eye into seeing more of a garden that what is actually there then there are many illusions that one could add to one’s

garden. Having a seamless transition from your home to your outdoor space can be done by raising the outdoor ground to meet the level of the threshold. This in itself not only creates the illusion that your garden is bigger but also that the room leading to the garden is bigger as well. To extend this use similar shades of decking, plants and pots that complement the room that you are transitioning from. Once you are out in the gar-

den different levels and sections within your garden can energise it. It does not have to involve changing the ground level of your garden because instead or in addition to levelling it you can add raised beds, hanging baskets and / or small trees. This would draw the eye upwards and outwards and in turn maximise the impression of space. By placing slabs or decking horizontally will give the illusion of more space, as will adding a mirror to a wall which will increase light levels in dark corners. If keeping it simple is more to your taste then symmetry is an excellent way to keep a garden elegant, spacious and organised. Urban gardens can provide a space which can be aesthetically pleasing but also practical. St. Richard’s Hospice is an independent registered charity that cares for patients and families in Worcestershire who are living with life-limiting illnesses. Each year they provide free care and support to 2,500 patients and family members – helping them achieve the best quality of life possible. St. Richard’s Hospice opened in 1984 by Dr. Jenny Bulman in Worcester. Through out the years the organization grew and in 1992 it oﬃcially relocated to Rose Hill house where it was opened by Her Royal Highness the Princess of Wales. Today there are 230 full and part time staﬀ employed at the Hospice, which include doctors, nurses, social workers and therapists. The main aim is to allow patients to live in their own homes with the support of a team of health experts provided by the hospice. However, the

hospice also provides in patient programs and Day Hospice for patients if necessary. St. Richard’s Hospice is always looking for volunteers to help give their patients the full time care and support they need. WORCESTER REVIEW OF THE MONTH: PAPAS Papas is an increasingly popular independent café the risotto blended perfectly with in Worcester, with a growing reputation for coﬀee and food. As someone who has enjoyed a Papas caﬀeine hit, I decided to sample the local cuisine.

Amidst a wide range of freshly prepared food, I chose one of the daily specials; beetroot risotto. Served with a tangy goat’s cheese and parmesan,

the absorbed beetroot. I added a varied and sizeable house salad, which was generously given at a reduced price. Dessert was vanilla crème Brule cheesecake, which was delicately mixed and refreshingly light. Papas also oﬀers homemade soups and Italian pasta as main courses. It serves freshly made breakfast and fresh sandwiches, paninis and salads and a wide range of drinks. The service was prompt and friendly and on a sunny day I sat outside in the small, but well laid out garden. The café interior is elegantly decorated, light and airy which contrasts well with the aged wooden beams dating from1605, making Papas most inviting for people to meet and eat. Stuart Bryan

Local couple shares magical garden in aid of charity Roger and Barbara Parker of 68 Windsor Ave, St. Johns, Worcester raised £850 last year for a list of charities. They are planning to continue opening the wonderful garden for public with the next opening on Sat and Sun 27th and 28th of May, their 10th time. 68 Windsor Avenue has an almost one acre garden divided into three areas, situated behind a 1930’s semi detached house in a cul-desac.
