Eddie ‘The Eagle’ Edwards: Try Hard Eddie ‘The Eagle’ Edwards is a unique British sporting hero with an incredible story to tell. The world’s ninth-fastest amateur downhill speed skier went on to become Great Britain’s first Olympic (self-taught!) ski-jumper, who missed out on medals by some distance, but won the hearts of the nation with his plucky, positive attitude and down-to-earth persona and emerged as a star of the Calgary ’88 Winter Olympics, returning to Britain as an overnight sporting celebrity. In Try Hard, Eddie talks through his incredible life-journey; from self-learning ski-jumping and

being shunned by the sporting establishment, to the extensive surgery to rebuild his face and body following years of spectacular crashes on the snow as he set out to break world-records in stunt jumping (10 cars & six buses) and speed-skiing (but ‘only’ reached 106.8mph); from bankruptcy through trustees’ mismanagement, to gaining a Law degree, and even how he became a most unlikely pop-star in Finland, above all, what will shine through is the steely resilience of a fearless man determined to overcome huge sporting and life hurdles. Summer is set to begin with the longest day of the year, also known as the summer solstice, on Wednesday June 21st. For many, this day marks as the start of summer, meaning more time out in the sun, longer days and family BBQs and picnics. But for many cultures around the world, summer solstice holds a much more significant meaning. The celebration for summer solstice dates back to ancient pre-Christian tradition. For the Greeks, according to some calendars, it would

mark the start of a new year – and the month long countdown towards the Olympics. For the Romans, the solstice symbolized the first day of the festival of Vestalia, allowing married women to enter the temples of vestal of virgins for that day only. Many Native American tribes celebrate the longest day of the year with a Sun Dance, while the Mayans and Aztecs used the day as a marker by which to build many of their central structures, so that the buildings would align perfectly with the shadows of the two solstices, summer and winter. In many European pagan traditions, the solstice was called Litha, a day to balance the elements of fire and water. And if you were extra lucky, it was believed to be the day that fairies would reveal themselves to the common folk. So whether the summer solstice means that you will be enjoying a glass of wine longer than usual on your back deck, or it holds significant cultural meaning, be sure to enjoy this year’s summer solstice by celebrating the start of a new summer season.

Credit Union launched in Droitwich

A new way for people to have easy and affordable access to loans and financial services has launched in Droitwich. Reach CIC and 6 Towns Credit Union have joined forces to set up a weekly credit union drop in from the WANDS Children’s Centre in Westlands, after being approached by Wychavon District Council. It launched last Month and will operate between 9.30am and 12.30pm every Tuesday for the 13 weeks to allow demand for the service to be assessed. Credit Unions are growing in popularity because they are a safer alternative to using a loan shark or pay day lender. They operate

like a bank and are regulated by the Financial Services Authority but there are no shareholders. Services are designed around what people need, whatever their income, whether financially secure and looking for something extra or on a low income and unable to find the right help. Any money made is reinvested back into the community for the benefit of the credit union’s members. A range of services are available including savings accounts, junior saving accounts and more.

RESTAURANT REVIEW OF THE MONTH: Burger Shop Cherry Tree Walk conjures up images of blossom and meadows rather than burgers and business, but nestled inside Arch 46 is Worcester’s newest restaurant, Burger Shop.

The succinct name adorned in black and white on a small sign suggest an approach based on simplicity and free of pretension. Inside the exposed brickwork is refreshingly left free of decor and wooden tables and stools enable 50 people to dine in a relaxed and clutter free environment. There is also space to eat outside. From a choice of five burgers I had the Worcester Blue Burger; a succulent beef patty, dripping in delicious melted Worcester Blue Cheese and spicy extras. The burger was complemented perfectly with a side dish of crispy mild cheese curds. For dessert a rich chocolate brownie was delicately offset with salted caramel and hazelnut. The urban soundtrack complements a generally youthful clientele for a lively start to a night out. Stuart Bryan

Opened in April, Burger Shop is run by Hereford based brothers Edwin and Dorian, who also own the original Burger Shop in Hereford.

Olly Murs fans in Worcestershire are in for a treat as the megastar is set to perform on Sunday July 25th at the Worcestershire County Cricket Club. Earlier this year Olly Murs, one of British music’s biggest stars, announced his biggest headline shows yet – 22 outdoor dates across the UK, spanning all summer. Olly Murs said, “I am thrilled to play outdoors at Worcestershire County Cricket Club. Outdoor shows are so much fun and I am looking forward to performing my biggest songs on my biggest outdoor tour!” Last year was an incredible year for Olly Murs which saw him celebrate his fourth successive No.1 Album ’24 HRS’, becoming the most successful solo artist ever to come from the X Factor. His new single ‘Years and Years’ is the

new album’s centre piece; the single follows radio favourites ‘You Don’t Know Love’ and ‘Grow Up’ which Olly recently performed on the X Factor. Since Olly shot to fame in 2009, he has recorded four multi-platinum albums, produced four Number 1 singles with total record sales exceeding 10 million. His latest album ’24 HRS’ is the follow up to the acclaimed million selling album ‘Never Been Better’. Before his huge summer tour, the spring of 2017 will see Olly play 23 UK shows including three O2’s and the opening night of the Teenage Cancer Trust shows, confirming his reputation as one of Britain’s very best live performers. Jon Graham, Managing Director of Worcestershire County Cricket Club, said: “we are delighted that an artist of the stature of Olly Murs is coming to New Road in 2017, it’s a major coup for the club.” For more information on the event or to purchase tickets go onto the WCCC website: www.wccc.co.uk

Champagne pops as traders celebrate new chapter

Local independent traders Maison Nero celebrated their move into larger premises in Church Street Pershore on Saturday 20th May with fizz and nibbles for their customers. The former menswear store has been given a modern vintage makeover and now oers a treasure trove of unique gifts and upcycled vintage furniture. Founded 4 years ago, proprietors Neil Reynolds

and Alison Brimmell, started out by selling their carefully restored furniture online but demand became high enough for them to open a store in Baker’s Arcade in 2015. This move across to larger premises opposite is the result of many hours of hard work and dedication by a family team. The result is a tranquil haven to shop for those special occasion gifts, soft furnishings and homewares as well as carefully upcycled furniture. They also undertake commissions for painting and refurbishment of furniture, but if you fancy trying your hand at shabby chic, they stock the full range of Frenchic paint and run painting workshops periodically. Maison Nero are open Tuesday to Saturday from 10am - 4pm and can be contacted on 01386 561396 / 07538 186773 or via their Facebook page - facebook@maisonnero.

SUMMER IS HERE! SO SHOW IT!

T

he lighter evenings and warm summer sunshine have an almost rejuvenating eect, so it would make sense to try to bring the summer indoors. After all, you do need to be inside for at least some of the time! 1

Bring the outside in: make a rustic floral arrangement with garden flowers and hedge cuttings.

2

Fruit and vegetables in bowls will add a definite summer feel to the home - try large ripe tomatoes or juicy peaches

4

3

Make it memorable: print out those pictures you’ve taken on your last holiday and make a little wall gallery collage.

String lights are a lovely addition to a home and they are an excellent way to create a beautiful atmosphere in any room, especially as the sun begins to set

5

Textiles are probably the easiest items to change with the seasons. Try investing in some new curtains and cushions in bright summer colours.

ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT CLIMBING PLANTS

C

limbing plants can be used to cover walls, fences and unsightly features in your garden whilst taking up little ground space. Dreamy and charming, climbers can add a lot to a house or a garden by providing a riot of colour that can transform and brighten bare walls or add height and texture to a border. Whilst there are many types of climbers we will focus on three of my favourites, Jasmine, Wisteria and Honeysuckle.

Witseria, another “beautiful twining climber with flowers in shades of white, blue, purple and pink.

There are two types of honeysuckle; one a climber and one a shrub. The climber, with its sweet scent and trumpet-shaped flowers, will

prefer fertile, moist but welldrained soil. It will produce its best flowers in full sun like the Wisteria and the Jasmine climber. The Honeysuckle is mostly hardy, requires little pruning and will flower in the summer. This is similar to a Wisteria, another beautiful twining climber with flowers in shades of white, blue, purple and pink. It will need more space as a climber as they can spread up to 20 meters or more against a wall and because of this, it will require more training and pruning. Jasmine has a more delicate scent but strives throughout the colder months so its dainty flowers will show in both summer and winter. If you have chosen one climber, you can companion plant it with another which will ensure a longer spell of flowers along your wall or trellis. Wisteria, a deciduous climber, is well companioned with clematis. Clematis have lavender-blue flowers that have

36

cream anthers and wavy edges. By pairing Wisteria and Clematis together you will see the Clematis have its flush of flowers against the Wisteria foliage following it’s short flowering season in spring. Sharing the same natural needs, clematis and climbing roses happily grow with each other and will, undoubtedly, introduce a romantic ambience within your garden for those long, perfect summer evenings. Practically, there are things to consider before going ahead and planting climbers, for example, some climbers, such as ivy, naturally cling to surfaces whereas some, such as honeysuckle, will need a framework to cling and develop on. I recommend to research the climber that you are buying as some can be aggressive in their nature and dominate the area. You will also need to consider the soil, the sunlight and the space that you have to use. Daisey McQuaid

An inside look at:

SPETCHLEY PARK GARDENS

As summer approaches, we’re turning our inside look to an outside look! We will be taking a tour to some of the best gardens in and around Worcestershire. Last month we looked at Priory Park in Malvern and this month we turn our heads towards Spetchley Park Gardens.

This beautiful historic garden, surrounded by ancient parkland, deer park and lakes is set in the wonderful Worcestershire countryside with far reaching views to the Malvern Hills. It is a garden that provides the ideal day out, allowing you and your children the dream escape from the bustle of everyday life.

the Gardens and in early June the herbaceous peonies and Itoh Hybrids will flower, creating an enchanting and memorable experience for all visitors.

On site there is a wonderful tea room, where you can buy a light lunch or full, traditional afternoon tea. Furthermore, the tree peonies are in full bloom in

Spetchley Park Gardens also holds historical significance. It was bought by Rowland Berkeley in 1605, and successive members lovingly created

the landscape and Gardens throughout the years. The mansion on the grounds was built in 1811 and up until 1925, the Gardens were closed off from the public to protect its heritage. In 2013, a rejuvenation project called Spetchley Revival Project was introduced. The initial stage involved the building of a new Car Park and Welcome Centre thanks to a grant from the RDPE. The house, landscape and Gardens are now very much a legacy of one family’s commitment to ensuring nature; beauty and longevity thrive at Spetchley. For more information on the many events happening this summer in the Gardens, check out their website www. spetchleygardens.co.uk.

New charity is searching for help The first week of June is national volunteer week, with the focus on recruiting, rewarding and recognising volunteers. If voluntary work is something that appeals then try contacting Worcester Community Action, a new service set up with the aim of promoting, marketing and delivering volunteering to the community. With recently acquired charity status and

launched in April, Worcester Community Action acts as a brokerage service to place prospective volunteers in a suitable organisation. Project Co-ordinator Sally Ellison explains more; ‘We provide one -to-one support to ensure everyone finds a suitable voluntary placement which is both fun and rewarding.’ Already the service has 20 organisations involved, providing opportunities in areas as diverse as working with animals, environmental projects and people with disabilities. The service, which is voluntary run is aiming to expand, but predictably funding is a challenge and Ellison welcomes ‘any contributions, sponsorship or support which can help us serve the community better’. Worcester Community Action is available for people aged 16 plus and open to the public Monday to Friday between 10 and 5. Stuart Bryan

VIEW WITH HUW - FOCUS ON THE GOOD It’s time to acknowledge the good in our lives. Instead of thinking your happiness is decided for you by what is dealt out to you, try seeing how your life is influenced as much by the way you pay attention and interpret and recall your experiences. Ignoring the positive side of life is self - limiting. For example, try to recognise how lucky we are to live in the beautiful county of Worcestershire. Trying to live a better life can often be associated with focusing on the negative aspects of ourselves and becoming locked into a battle of wanting and needing to change. Such an approach can be wearisome as we miss the gold of what we have already and is all around us. Try asking yourself the question, ‘What I don’t want to change.’

• • • • •

Throughout the coming week jot down the positive experiences you have on a daily basis and perhaps in the evening go back over the good events of the day and add more detail. Let’s start seeing the best in life. www.huwrichardscoaching.com 07939061822

Calling all Superheroes! St Richard’s Hospice wants you!

On Saturday June 17th, Batman, Superwoman and Spiderman will all be out in full force as they participate in St Richard Hospice’s Superhero Challenge. The challenge, which will help raise funds for St Richard’s many free programs and supports, is a 5km walk or run that consists of different

obstacles along the route.

Promising to be an event that will be fun for all ages, the challenge will take place at the University of Worcester Lakeside Campus in Holt, Worcester. Participants are also encouraged to bring along a photo of their real life hero to share on the Superhero Gallery, which will be on location through out the day. WHEN A LOVED ONE PASSES AWAY Knowing what to do when someone passes away is always one of those experiences for which in life we never become an expert in, as most of us will only arrange on average between 1-2 funerals in our lifetime. As well as having to cope emotionally there can seem to be lots of decisions that you have to make in a short period of time. In the initial days depending on where the person has passed away will depend on what you need to do next and speaking with friends and family or the funeral director is a good way to get advice. It always seems like there is lot’s to do on top of making the initial arrangements and it can be important to give yourself time to make the right decision for you. The best advice when looking for a funeral is always to shop around to make sure you get the service which you are looking for and

that is right for you. There will be many people who are there to support you from Clergy to Civil Celebrants, Grief counselling as well as your initial contact with the funeral director you choose. On this page are funeral services available to you in the local community.

HOROSCOPES Sagittarius (Nov 22 - Dec 21) Tap into the power of twosomes! The Sun is traveling through the relationship-centric parts of your chart all month, as it does every June. Take a pause from your usual independent focus and get in sync with others. Capricorn (Dec 22 - Jan 19) The Sun is making its annual trip through your healthy and organized house. While that might not sound like the sexiest news, you may welcome the opportunity to get your well-being and administrative affairs in order. Aquarius (Jan 20 - Feb 18) Delayed spring fever! Until June 20, the Sun is bursting through Gemini and your fifth house of passion and joie de vivre, revitalizing a season that’s been off to a slow start. Pisces (Feb 19 - March 20) Time to cozy up and contemplate, Pisces? Use the first three weeks to nest, rest and catch up with loved ones— while making plenty of time to nurture yourself. Aries (March 21 - April 19) Get fired up, Aries! The Sun is blazing through your communicative house, adding some spice to your conversations. Brainstorm ideas with colleagues, perfect your pitches, or binge-watch some TED talks. Tarus (April 20 - May 20) Slow and steady, Taurus. Cut out excess distractions, like getting sucked into dramas that erupt on Facebook and picking up the slack for a lazy coworker.

Gemini (May 21 - June 20) It’s Gemini time and you’re feeling the cosmic shift! Spring got off to a sluggish start, but with the Sun heating up your star sign until June 20, your energy is restored and renewed. Cancer (June 21 0 July 22) Scuttle back into that shell, Cancer. The Sun is drifting through Gemini, your house of rest, closure and solitude. This is your annual existential pause—a time to sift through old, outworn situations and tie up loose ends. Leo (July 23 - Aug 22) There’s power and strength in numbers, Leo. The Sun is making its annual visit to Gemini and your eleventh house of teamwork and technology until June 20. It’s time to get your big ideas out there, both virtually and in-person. Virgo (Aug 23 - Sept 22) Get into #boss mode, Virgo. The Sun is in your ‘take-charge’ house, putting the spotlight on your career and loftiest ambitions. You’ve been working hard to reinvent yourself this year, now it’s time to cash in. Libra (Sept 23 - Oct 22) Adventure IS worthwhile, so get out there and explore! The Sun is in your house of freedom and expansion, urging you to exit your comfort zone and try something new. Scorpio (Oct 23 - Nov 21) “Life is a process of becoming,” wrote Anais Nin. With the Sun in your house of transformation, you may feel some deep emotional and internal shifts.

SURFING THE WEB MADE EASY to all people, there is help available. One neat “trick” is to approach learning to use a computer as a new hobby. Just as you would with any hobby, you first get to know the basics, and then with practice you can get better and better! And what’s great is that you don’t have to be an expert to get the best out of the computer and the internet. Just knowing the basics will help you master the top ten things to do online: 1. Did you know 42% of people over the age of 65 use a computer every day. This is great but that still leaves 58% not using a computer daily, with a majority not using one at all! We all know the saying how difficult it is to teach an “old dog new tricks,” but with new technology all around us and courses now readily accessible

WBC film nights films to quench the thirst for local movie fans.

Finding independent off beat films in Worcester can be hard work. Splendid cinema at the Worcester Arts Workshop provides occasional film seasons and The Hive are showing four radical films in June, but it is often necessary to travel to county town theatres and beyond to watch alternatives to the often dreary Hollywood blockbuster served up by the Odeon and Vue. Starting in March, the monthly film nights premiered with a Coen Brothers film and the April offering was a double bill of music documentaries; Lawrence of Belgravia and Oil City Confidential. Steve's Fitness tip of the month - The Wall Sit Muscles Used: Glutes, hamstrings, quadriceps and core. Function: Holding the body in this static position causes the muscles to contract isometrically – helping to build strength and muscular endurance.

How to perform a wall sit 1.

2. 3. 4. 5.

6.

Lean against the wall with your feet planted firmly on the ground, shoulder width apart. Your feet should also be about two feet away from the wall. Now slowly slide down the wall with your back pressed against it until your legs are bent at a right angle. Keeping your feet in that position, lean your back and arms in to the wall to begin to support your weight. Your knees should also be directly above your ankles and your back should be touching the wall at all times. When your knees are at an angle of 90 degrees and your thighs are parallel to the floor, maintain this position for between 30-60 seconds. After holding this position, slide yourself back up the wall and in to the initial position.

Remember these tips: 1. 2. 3.

4.

Keep your core braced allowing your back to stay flat against the wall – maintain good posture throughout the exercise. Remember to breathe when performing the exercise – don’t hold your breath. Perform this exercise 3 times, with 30 seconds to a minutes rest in between. Next time you perform the exercise, try and hold it for longer than your previous effort As you gain strength, increase your holding time by 10 seconds.

Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes stole a stunning victory in the Spanish Grand Prix from Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel. A clever strategic move by the team followed by Hamilton attacking and passing Vettel put the Briton in control and he defended successfully to the end. Vettel had passed Hamilton off the start line to lead for the first half of the race but ended up out-flanked by their rivals. Hamilton’s second win of the season cut his deficit to Vettel in the championship to six points after five of 20 races.

MOTORING PAGE

Your tyre are the only point of contact that your vehicle has with the road – they need to be in good working condition at all times to ensure your safety. To avoid any problems, follow these important care tips: Inspect your tyre: You may not always notice if one of your tyres has been damaged. Inspect your tyres regularly for wear and any damage to avoid any sudden problems. Also, have a professional inspect your tyres every year. Check the air pressure: Driving with incorrect tyre pressures can affect a vehicle’s handling and braking in wet conditions, and can seriously compromise your safety. Driving at high speed can damage your tyre:

At greater speeds, tyres have greater a chance of being damaged by road hazards or heat buildup. High speeds can also contribute to a rapid air loss or even a sudden tyre explosion, which can cause the loss of control of the vehicle. Use your spare tyre! If you see any damage to a tyre or wheel, replace it with your spare tire and have your tire checked by a professional.

Cricket hitting the street this summer Cobham Cricket Trust, with the worthy aim of raising money to deliver cricket into disadvantaged communities where opportunities to play can be scarce.

Bat and ball is soon coming to Worcester city centre. It’s not the name of a new bar, restaurant or shop, but a softball cricket tournament in Angel Place and the High Street. The street sixes tournament took its first innings last year and following a successful first appearance is returning for a second spell on the afternoon of July 10th. The tournament is in aid of the Worcestershire

The event has been sponsored by Worcestershire Ambassadors, who have chosen it as one of their support programme of community projects. Up to 24 teams of Worcestershire businesses will be entering, with each team comprising 10 players. So, if you fancy an afternoon outside in the city centre away from the office and catching balls rather than the latest sales, then contact Cricket Development Director at Worcestershire Cricket, Tom Hill at tom.hill@wccc.co.uk.

The best of Britain will descend on Birmingham from 1st - 2nd July as they compete for the prestigious honour of being crowned British Champion as well as a place on the team for the IAAF World Championships in London. With the World Championships taking place on home turf in August, competition for places on the British Athletics team will be fiercer than ever. The Alexander Stadium has played host to some memorable British Championships moments over the years and 2016 was no different as ‘finals day’ on the Sunday saw thrilling victories for the likes of Dina Asher-Smith, Laura Muir, Matthew Hudson-Smith and Adam Gemili. Around 700 athletes from across the country will compete over two days with the majority of finals being settled during a scintillating afternoon of athletics on the Sunday.

Furthermore, through out the weekend there will be a spectator village open for all guests, which will have more information on the events and other activities available. In order to give athletes the best possible preparation for the IAAF World Championships, British Athletics has taken the decision to move the events previous held on the Friday evening into Saturday’s programme, meaning the event will now take place on 1-2 July. Doors for the event will open to the public at 11am on Saturday morning and event timings will range from 12 to 18:04 through out the day. On Sunday doors will open at 10:30 and events will begin at 11:25 and go on to 16:50. Ticket prices range from £11.25 to £22.67 and can be purchased online on Ticketmaster. For more information about the event go to britishathletics.org.uk for up to date details.

Off to a flyer!

Worcestershire’s season has got off to a cracking start. In 4-day cricket they have won their first two games including a nail-biting win over Northamptonshire in just 2 days. In the One Day Cup, the county have already qualified for the next stage after some highly impressive performances. What’s really

encouraging is they have won games ‘from behind’, against Warwickshire and Durham: in previous seasons in similar situations they may well have folded under the pressure. Seasoned supporters will rightly say ‘one swallow doesn’t make a summer’, but the signs are there and we need to remind ourselves this is still a quite young side. Overseas signing John Hastings has performed well if not spectacularly, though his return catch to dismiss the vastly experienced Paul Collingwood against Durham was nothing short of sensational and undoubtedly a game changer. ‘Big’ John now joins the Australian squad for the ICC Champions Trophy in England, to be replaced by fellow international Nathan Lyon, another sound signing it would appear. There is quite a gap now before the side returns to New Road with just one four-day game at home before the hectic schedule of the T20 during June. It’s great to report such a promising start but, as ever, we need to keep our feet firmly on the ground. Chris Davies
