Expat’s “black hole” BRAVE JENNY Hart says she fell off the government’s radar after the death of her beloved husband Keith – losing key beneﬁts like health cover in Spain. by JACK TROUGHTON After the couple moved to the sun in 2001, Jenny became Keith’s dependent after he became a pensioner six years ago at the age of 65 – she will not receive her UK state pension until 2022. Sadly, Keith lost his battle with cancer in June last year at the age of 71. Within two weeks Jenny lost her SIP card and all scheduled medical appointments were scrapped. Now battling back, Jenny wants to warn others of the potential pitfall, created because she married an older man. “It is a mineﬁeld,” Jenny told Xpat. “And when you have just lost your partner, you just don’t need it. “I went to the chemist and they

said the SIP card was cancelled…I couldn’t believe it.” DEPENDENT Jenny added “I cannot believe I have gone from being the dependent of a British pensioner to nothing. I feel like I have disappeared into a black hole.” The Harts moved to Benigembla in the Vall del Pop 15 years ago and became ofﬁcial residents of a village they came to love, and in correspondence with the Department of Works and Pensions, Jenny became an ofﬁcial dependent with Keith receiving an additional £200 a month. THE FIRST three editions of The Xpat News have gone wild! Thank you to everyone who took the time, either through our Facebook or via email, to wish the new-look newspaper the best. The whole point behind the re-brand from Round Town News was to ‘freshen things up’; after looking through the old newspaper we saw many holes and gaps, especially in the news sections. Week one saw us making contact with many local reporters and getting the best of the best on board to strengthen our coverage. Last week saw a record number of stories published (well at least in the two years under my ownership) and we hope the new reporters, Pippa & Darren, are delivering the best news for you,

I would like to take this opportunity to reiterate that the team currently working for me is the original team, the Mia Media team, my Editor Jack Troughton is still at the helm, as he has been for a number of years… there is another newspaper making claims to be the ‘original’ but as we all know this isn’t correct, we will let you make your own minds up on that one! At 32-years-old, I am the youngest Managing Director of a newspaper on the Costa Blanca but my experience is vast, having worked for RTN for over 12 years and I would like to thank everyone who has nurtured me along the way. Emergency measures JAVEA TOWN Hall has begun work finalising a new plan to cut the risk of forest fires after the devastating blaze of last September. by Jack Troughton The move addresses the increased risk to residents in areas of high population density, managing “high risk” forest areas – including public participation and training – and improving the network of fire hydrants. A specialised company has been hired to help draft a plan which will involve the local emergency services and regional specialists. The Marina Alta town has some 2,500 hectares of forest, many nestling against homes in urbanisations across the municipality. It is assumed there will be the risk of more devastating fires in the future – and it is everyone’s responsibility to be prepared to help deal with them. Prevention rather than the cost of fighting fires is central to planning – last September’s emergency response cost over 600,000 Euros a day.

Government tastes Brexit defeat DEFIANT PEERS handed the British government its first defeat on the Brexit bill by insisting ministers guarantee the rights of EU nationals living in the UK. by jack troughton The House of Lords voted by 358 to 256 on an amendment and may still push for other changes before the draft legislation is returned to the Commons. However, while the government was “disappointed” at the vote in the upper house, MPs have the opportunity to remove the amendment when the bill returns to the House of Commons. Prime Minister Theresa May’s government says the bill is simply about triggering Article 50, the start of negotiations to leave the European Union – and has insisted the UK will still launch its departure at the end of this month. A government spokesman said: “We are disappointed the Lords have chosen to amend a bill that the Commons passed without amendment. “The bill has a straightforward purpose – to enact the referendum result and allow the government to get on with the negotiations.” There was a long and heated debate in the Lords – the government was accused

of treating people like “bargaining chips” but the government is sticking to its guns; it says it has repeatedly made it clear it wants to guarantee the rights of EU citizens living in the UK and British expats in Europe “as early as we can”. SUPPORT Seven Tory peers supported the amendment, proposed by Labour and Liberal Democrats, most Lords want an early unilateral move by the UK. Brexit Minister Lord Bridges underlined the government was keen to reach an agreement with other EU nations over citizens rights. However, he said “a small number of our European counterparts” insisted there could be no talks until Article 50 was served. And Tory grandee Lord Tebbit, a former Conservative cabinet minister, said the debate seemed to focus on “nothing but the rights of foreigners”. But Labour’s shadow Brexit minister Lady Hayter said the genuine concerns of EU nationals in the UK and British

THE FOREIGN Office has warned visitors to Spain making fake insurance claims are committing fraud – and could face prison. There have been a massive increase in holiday sickness insurance claims as insurance companies target customers as they arrive in resort, encouraging them to falsely

claim in order to receive compensation from their accommodation. Benidorm has been hit dramatically from this scam and has cost hotels within the resort around 60 million Euros according to HOSBEC. The situation has become so dire that the Alicante companies, who are the most affected, have

received support of the Foreign Office. It has issued a dramatic warning to its citizens stating false claims can attract large fines and even imprisonment. The prison sentences ranges from 6 months to 3 years over any claims that exceed 400 Euros. Some claims received by hotels been as much as 6,000 Euros.

Road tax changes for UK

The Driver & Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has sent out a reminder that there are only a few weeks to go before the changes bite. DVLA Vehicle Service Manager, Rohan Gye said: “These changes won’t affect any vehicles that are registered before 1st April 2017. So, for anyone who already owns a car or is thinking of buying a used car the rates of vehicle tax will not be changing. “However, anyone considering buying a new car that will be ﬁrst registered from 1st April should check the

After the first year, the amount of tax to pay will depend on the type of vehicle. The new rates are £140 a year for petrol or diesel vehicles, £130 a year for alternative fuel vehicles - hybrids, bioethanol and LPG. Vehicles with zero CO2 emissions are zero rated. In addition, for vehicles with a list price of more than £40,000, the rate of tax is based on CO2 emissions for the first year. Afterwards, the rate depends on the type of vehicle and an additional charge of £310 a year for the next 5 years. The vehicle will then be taxed at one of the standard rates, depending on its type.

Mortgage ‘floor clauses’ SAN MIGUEL Town Hall has organised a talk explaining how borrowers paid too much to banks because of unfair mortgage floor clauses. The meeting, organised by Councillor Maria Jose Costa Medrano, will take place at Las Filipinas Social Centre (Blue Lagoon) on Friday 10th March at noon. All international residents of the area are welcome to attend.

Jenny, manager of Jalon Valley HELP’s charity shop in Jalon, said money was tight. “If I lived I the UK I would be entitled to income support, the DWP agrees but said it could not be paid in Spain - it’s one rule for one and a different one for another.” “Money is a worry,” she said. “Some mornings I think ‘sod it’ it will all come out in the wash, other mornings, I just ask myself how I am going to cope. “I have some savings but if I have to live on them in ﬁve years nothing will be left. People say I could sell the house but I don’t want to - it is home and far too soon to walk away from yet.” And she said “the whole situation is a bummer and it was not a very nice surprise. I don’t expect to be kept but Keith only claimed his state pension for six years and paid in for 45.” Jenny believes a growing number of people caught in a similar trap are pressurising the government to a take a more sympathetic stance with people suddenly left alone through no fault of their own.

Rajoy on Trump, Budgets and Brexit SPANISH PRIME Minister Mariano Rajoy has given his latest views and opinions on a wide variety of subjects - including Donald Trump, Brexit and his immediate priorities for Spain. by DARREN JAMES

In an interview with Spanish TV channel Telecinco, Mr Rajoy said that his minority government would “give ground where we need to” in respect of this year’s budget while accepting that everyone has a “great responsibility to bear”.

However, Mr Rajoy needs the support of many of the minority parties in the Spanish Parliament in order to get his measures through. The Premier was speaking after his return from the 25th Spain-France Summit held in Malaga; and he praised outgoing French President, François Hollande, for “behaving very kindly towards Spain”. He also told Mr Hollande that it was his intention to enjoy good and positive relations with American President Donald Trump since “we share values and we have common interests in areas of security, foreign policy, defence and trade.” On the subject of Brexit, Mr Rajoy accepted that “the will of the British people must be respected” even though he was never in agreement with the decision. He added his Government would “be constructive in all of its relations with the United Kingdom” as it wanted “to have a fair relationship and for things to be done in a reasonable manner.”

Drug warning DOCTORS HAVE warned of the dangers of overuse of the drug ‘Omeprazole’; used by many of the British expat community and frequently called ‘the stomach liner”. SEMERGEN, the Digestive Working Group of the Spanish Society of Primary Care Physicians, has warned about the overuse of the pill, as a result of both prescription and over-the-counter purchases. Co-ordinator Dr Mercedes Ricote has emphasised that it has become the norm among those that taking the drug as a stomach protector and is used by patients “with the feeling of improving or avoiding the side effects of other drugs and as an antacid.” He was also concerned that some patients took Omeprazole to prevent the effects of over-indulging in food or drink. The doctor emphasised that Omeprazole was a medicine and had known side effects. As such, it should only be taken on professional medical advice - abusive or inappropriate use of this drug could have serious consequences for health; anyone with concerns should consult their General Practitioner.

Spain’s growing inequality by JACK TROUGHTON SPAIN HAS won praise for its economic recovery but has been warned over growing inequality and poverty across the country. A report from the European Commission in Brussels points out the risks of rising social exclusion as the gap between the rich and poor widens. The EC believes Spain has maintained a strong recovery through her reforms and has ‘shored up’ her financial sector and reduced unemployment – however, the Spain 2017 Report warns “the legacy of the crisis is not yet fully overcome...

and significant challenges persist”. The paper underlines the progress of the last three years but also points to a failure to reduce inequality, poverty and the rates of social exclusion; said to be “amongst the highest in Europe”. One problem, says Brussels, is the job market which continues to show high levels of temporary and seasonal employment. Over 13% of workers were said to be at risk of slipping into poverty. The report states: “The gap between the wealthiest 20% and the poorest 20% is one of the biggest in the (European) Union, and it continues

to rise.” And an index measuring wealth distribution confirms this; both before and after the redistribution effects of taxes and available benefits. Brussels believed the chances of falling into poverty was far above levels when Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy took office after winning the general election in November 2011. The EC blames ‘limited’ social benefits compared to other member states, a lack of coordination between employment offices and social services, and – by EU standards – low levels of state support for families in need.

‘Mascleta’ Goes Off With A Bang TO START Valencia’s Fallas 2017, amateur Sergio Mompo was chosen over 2200 other people to host the traditional explosion that is the opening ‘mascleta’.

A programme ‘mascletacomposer.com’ held auditions using 51 audio clips of different firecrackers, giving a possible 129 million combinations to create the perfect opening show.

Segio, who is from Xativa, won the competition to work alongside the company Pyrotechnics of the Mediterranean. Sergio has expressed his “pride and honour” for winning the

competition and to have had the opportunity to start his mascleta in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento of Valencia. He stated: “I think it has been very good, people have been happy. It has been a good design” adding he felt “pyrotech-

nic” and fulfilled “an illusion.” Valencia hosts a mascleta each day at the Plaza del Ayuntamiento until 19th March at 2pm. But be prepared, expect firecrackers, bangers, live street bands, large crowds and a unique atmosphere.

I am not a misogynist. I’m also not patronising (I assume you know what that means?) but just in case, a definition of a misogynist is a person who dislikes, despises, or is strongly prejudiced against women. Actually, on second thoughts, perhaps I am, because I’ve always preferred a lady to a woman. There is, in my humble, a big difference. More and more I see a modern strain of the female sex that simply detests being a lady. They display an underlying and frankly worrying aggression in their attitudes that were nowhere near the surface 30 or 40 years ago. I can remember going out in Central London during the late ‘70s and early ‘80s most evenings, and if on the rare occasion I felt uncomfortable in a pub or club it was always due to the drunken male testosterone taking over looking for a confrontation. It was never a lady who had any issue, even with a Babycham or a G & T or two inside them, being able to enjoy and comport themselves in a civilised manner. They were always a pleasure to be with, especially work colleagues and the wives and girlfriends of my cricket team mates. Any drunken antics and foul and abusive language was 100% the property of the man. It wasn’t until my early years in Spain that I heard British girls and women swearing. I actually made my excuses early to leave a particular table of mainly female tourists as I couldn’t take any more. And then came The Spice Girls... I know it’s almost 25 years since they joined the scene, but I’m convinced they and their “girl power” infiltrated the generation of young girls and late teenagers that are now between 35 and 45 giving them a previously hidden away confidence. Having used that age group, I’ve equally experienced disgusting behaviour and language from a number of women in the over 50, baby boomer years that turns my

grey hair even whiter, who have been inspired, perhaps, to follow the examples set by some of their own children and grandchildren. Talking of women in modern society, I’m often reminded of the much missed Two Ronnies and a weekly sketch featuring Diana Dors. Entitled ‘The Worm That Turned’, the opening and dramatic announcement at the beginning of each week, from 1980, was simply years ahead of its time. “The date line is 2012. England is in the grip of a new regime of terror. Traditionally a land of brave heroes and great statesmen, Britain now laboured under the yoke of a power guaranteed to strike fear into the hearts of all men... The country is being run by women.” I give you May, Rudd, Truss, Sturgeon and Dick. Wonderful material for an onomastist – that’s a studier of names...in case you didn’t know!

Terror threat highest since 1970s BRITAIN FACES a threat of terrorist attack not seen since the IRA mainland bombing campaigns of the 1907s, a new watchdog warns. by EDWARD GRAHAM MAX HILL, the independent reviewer of terrorism laws, said Islamist extremists were targeting UK cities – and praised intelligence services for limiting the threat across the UK. The barrister, who is responsible for balancing anti-terror measures against concerns over civil rights, said so-called Islamic State was planning “indiscriminate attacks on civilians of whatever race or colour”. And he said the “intensity” and “frequency” of serious plots represented “an enormous ongoing risk” that could not be ignored; but admitted there were differences between IRA attacks 40 years ago and the modern Jihadists. Mr Hill highlighted the hundreds of British people travelling to Iraq and Syria to join IS and ﬁght for the terrorist organisation – who were now returning or about to return. Last month Spain also warned of the likelihood of an Islamic State attack after its intelligence services reported an increase of ‘interest’ in the country and potentially targeting tourist hotspots. Both Spain and the UK remain on Level Four security, the second highest alert over a terrorist attack.

It’s a ship built for a British company, with the customers at the forefront. “At the moment we’re working closely with the Saga team to ensure that we understand their vision which we can then develop, and turn into a reality. Plus, we’re very fortunate to be building at Meyer Werft where I have gained considerable experience over the years – they’re the best in the world.”

Fake phones PEOPLE ACROSS Europe have spent 4.2 billion Euros buying counterfeit smartphones, a new EU survey has revealed. Over 2015, 1.3 billion of the gadgets were sold worldwide. It means one in six people across the planet own a smartphone; each spending the average price of 275 Euros for the privilege. In Europe, one in three residents bought a device - equivalent to 150 million units sold…however, 14 million of these devices were counterfeit or 8.3% worth 4.2 billion Euros. The figures are in a report by the EU Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), based in Alicante, in a collaboration with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). The investigation was carried out to see the noticeable effects on the economy but also to the vulnerability of the users’ personal details and privacy using counterfeit devices. WHO has drawn up a list of the potential dangers of infections – a league table headed by ‘gramnegative’ bugs such as E. coli; which can spark lethal bloodstream infections and pneumonia in the most vulnerable hospital patients. And the list, divided into ‘critical’, ‘high’ and ‘medium’ priority infections, will be presented to the G20 summit in Germany this summer aimed at focussing the minds of politicians into the pressing need of finding new solutions. New antibiotics are

needed to fight ‘hard to treat’ infections said WHO; for years scientists have warned the world is on the edge of a ‘post-antibiotic era’ – which could leave a series of infections untreatable with existing drugs. WHO warned this could mean even common infections might spread and fatally infect the frail. The organisation warns that without intervention and investment at government level, pharmaceutical companies will concentrate on treatments that are easier and more profitable to develop. WHO wants the focus to be on ‘clinical need’ as the problem escalates. And its list of problem diseases was established based on current levels of drug resist-

Ashamed to be English? MY HUSBAND and I attended a football match in Jacarilla to watch our grandson’s team play. After what transpired during and after the match, I felt compelled to write a letter to your newspaper. Jacarilla was playing against a local British expat team and the behaviour of not only the players, which were all aged about 11 years of age, but also the parents, made myself, my husband and our family ashamed to be English. English. It was so embarrassing to hear the English men comment nastily when a Spanish boy was knocked over; things like… “Go on kick him while he’s down,” and the swearing was disgusting. In fact a nice young English couple apologised to me when I complained about the swearing in front of the children. This nice couple said they get upset with it all the time, so it must happen at most matches with that team. Anyway it was otherwise a superb and well fought match which was spoilt for us proud grandparents and the Spanish families that were also there. We are in Spain not England and are guests of this country. With Neanderthals like those people on Saturday, it is no wonder the Brits have a terrible name and reputation. In Roger Brown’s production of the play, William and Margaret can set up their table and chairs by their own bit of the ocean to enjoy a book and a nice cup of tea. An air of ‘smugness’ prevails. However, in this well-observed drama - which is performed at the Javea Play-

ers’ Studio Theatre in the Old Town of Javea from Monday 27th to Saturday 1st April – unwelcome invaders are massing. Firstly, a not-too-frightful beachcomber invades their space; then comes an extremely frightful and obnoxious woman claiming to be looking for the kite her child has managed to lose; and next to invade, is a woman named Ida who is completely unaware that is simply not done to park your bottom in close proximity to the beach huts. Finally, to break the camel’s

back, a Mrs Newman arrives loudly demanding that the two brats she has with her should be allowed to use the loos the beach huts do not have. Worse, is to follow. Slighted and humiliated by the disdain heaped upon them by those wealthy enough to buy a shed, dump it on the sand and lapel it a beach hut, these three ladies decide to go to war. They set up a long wind breaker just a couple of feet in front of the beach huts and stage a sit-in against those who believe owning

one of those sheds entitles them to rule the waves. It is a splendid battle of the classes and tremendous fun. Bar room blues NASTY BOOGIE, one of Valencia’s top blues bands, is the guest of Costa Blanca Blues on Saturday 11th March – after keeping the music appreciation group waiting to book a gig. by Jack Troughton Formed in 2006 and one of the hardest working bands in the area, the professional outfit are veterans of all the major blues festivals in Spain and are looking forward to playing El Cid’s in Benidoleig. And over the decade, Nasty Boogie has perfected its craft and built a wide repertoire ranging from upbeat boogies, jives and swings to deep blues, walking blues, train blues; basically all the forms from the Delta, Chicago, California and Texas. Costa Blanca Blues organiser Karla Daracos said:”It will be so great to finally witness the blues energy of Nasty Boogie. It has taken a long time to get this band to perform for a Costa Blanca Blues music appreciation party - but now our time has come!” Nasty Boogie’s guitarist, Raúl Rabadán is a powerhouse player when he needs to be but can pick out the notes with a light touch too, while singer Daniel Tena is also master harmonica player and a real showman. Like many of the Spanish vocalists, he sings in the English language in order to preserve the intensity of the blues songs. Fran Moreno (bass) and Juanjo Iniesta (drums) are both professional and experienced musicians who are in charge of keeping the beat on track. Nasty Boogie has two CD’s in the marketplace. “Moanin’ At Midnight” and “Fresh Little Fish” - the tracks are on YouTube. The band will soon be going back into the studio to record a collection of original songs. According to Raúl Rabadán, the band likes to get the audience involved by encouraging dancing and singing along to the songs. “We have a great time and we like to have fun with our fans,” admitted the entertainer. Courts accept condition is a disability A CASTELLON court has recognised people suffering from Fibromyalgia should be classed as officially disabled. According to the National Fibromyalgia Association, between 3% and 6% of the world’s population has the syndrome - this equates to around 200-400 million people worldwide. The Social Court No. 4 in Castellon has issued a judgement that recognises, for the first time, a permanent incapacity of a patient who suffers from fibromyalgia, together with multiple chemical and electrical sensitivity. The ruling will allow those affected to receive a supplement to pay a person to assist them in their needs. Ruben, 47, suffers from chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, Multiple Chemical Sensitivity, depressive disorder with phobic development, electromagnetic hypersensitivity, irritable colon with intolerances and poor therapeutic response. The court accepted his was a very rare case as these diseases together are very uncommon, but what has come out of it is a great step towards the acknowledgement of Fibromyalgia. Ruben’s condition was

so bad he had to relocate to an isolated area due to his intolerance to the exposure of environmental and electromagnetic chemicals. And he had been granted permanent disability, for which he received a pension of 55% of his regular base. However, he successfully appealed this decision for an absolute subsidy. During the hearing, Ruben’s legal team showed he needs the assistance of a third person to be able to carry out a “normal” life, and depended on his wife for such things as personal cleanliness, food or house cleaning and room in which he lives isolated. The syndrome also prevented him working as a qualified plumber, or any other trade, because “it is unthinkable to find a profession in which there is no exposure to the innumerable intolerances that the plaintiff suffers.” In the end, he was granted permanent disability and will receive a full pension. In addition, this amount will be increased with a supplement intended for him to pay a person to assist him. The ruling was good news to mark World Day for Rare Diseases, which is marked on the last day of February each year.

THE RICHES of past times go on display in Quesada next week as an ever-popular Costa Blanca antiques and collectors fair migrates south for the ﬁrst time. by JACK TROUGHTON THE ANTIQUES, Vintage, Retro and Collectors Fair opens its doors on Wednesday 8th March at Hotel La Laguna, Golf and Spa. Usually staged at Teulada, organisers have expanded the calendar to four shows for 2017 and decided to branch out and start in the south of the Costa. However, such is the standing of the fair, it attracts traders from across Valencia and Murcia – and the event also supports a local charity; next week it is the

turn of DEBRA, The Butterfly Children. Sue Horey told Xpat: “We are supporting a different charity at each fair and at this one it is DEBRA, The Butterfly Children, which is a charity we had never heard of and when we accidentally found their charity shop – not far from the hotel – we were so moved by the plight of the children that it had to be our first charity. “They will be represented at the fair and anyone wanting to know more about them can find their stand

Hi Aunty V, I’ve upgraded to Windows 10 from Win 7 Home Premium. When I’m back in England I use an EE 6GB mobile sim, valid for 90 days, subject to usage. With win 7, I could close down all updates etc. and update when visiting my daughters, or use a hotspot,so I never used all the 6GB, allowance.Now I’m beginning to think that it was a mistake to upgrade as, with Win 10, I cannot find out how to switch off all the auto updates etc. Any advice would be very much appreciated. Kind regards Robert Aunty says: You are correct.Windows 10 does not have the option to disable updates, like its predecessors.The only way I can see is to stop the Windows Update service and make sure that it doesn’t start again. Type “services” in the Windows 10 search box and click ‘View Local Services’. Scroll down to Windows Update and double-click the service. Set the startup type to ‘Disabled’. If the service is already running, click ‘Stop’. After the service has stopped, click ‘OK’. If you now click ‘Check for Updates’ in the Windows Update app, you should see a reassuring error message: ‘There were some problems installing updates’. If you want to later enable Automatic Updates again, you have to remember to go through this process and set the type of the Windows Update service to ‘Automatic’ or ‘Manual’ and then start the service. Gadget Inspector investigates the case of: Rolls-Royce 102EX Phantom Electric Car THIS WEEK the Inspector is stunned by the all-electric RollsRoyce 102EX Phantom. Who would ever have thought a company such as RollsRoyce with a history of 10 gallon to the mile luxo-barges would ever even consider an electric car. Well they have, and here it is: the 102EX Phantom. The 102EX Phantom has a lot in common with the traditional petrol-powered model – the 2:1, with its ratio of height of the wheels to the body; an aluminium spaceframe hand-welded from 500 separate parts using 100 metres of weld; and passing through 60 pairs of hands performing more than 2,000 individual operations over more than 20 days. Oh, and the interlinked wheel centres remain upright at all times. The car is powered by two 194bhp AC motors fitted above the rear differential. These motors are fed by five separate battery packs fitted under the bonnet to maximise space usage. This allows the 2.5 ton Phantom to achieve 0-62 mph in an incredible 5.7 seconds. Once inside, all of the traditional Rolls-Royce touches of luxury are present- including new soft- touch vegetable-dyed leather adorning the seats. There are some concessions to the power source, however - there’s a battery-charge indicator instead of a fuel gauge and the power reserve indicator now displays overrun recharging. In addition the centre console also houses a recharging meter. The new technology continues on the outside of the car – the paintwork. Using a nano paint with a particle size 1,000 times smaller than traditional metallic paint and then handpolishing for 5 hours gives a finish shinier than Kojak’s head.

Sixteen different standard colours would be available, with an additional 45,000 hues under the ‘bespoke programme’. Other unique fittings to this model include a blue illuminated plastic (Makrolon) Spirit of Ecstasy and red Rolls-Royce badges which indicate the car is experimental (as opposed to the normal black badges). When Parker needs to re-charge the Roller it can be connected to a standard power socket or parked on an induction plate. A single charge should be good for 124 miles

taking 20 hours from the standard power socket or 8 hours via the induction plate. The Inspector´s Verdict: Currently only a prototype, with no plans for full production, the Rolls-Royce 102EX Phantom just goes to show that even a traditional gasguzzling leviathan can be given green credentials. Imagine Simon Cowell arriving outside the Z-Factor studios and his chauffeur whipping out the extension lead for a top-up? And the likely cost? €700,000 – a nice shock to finish with.

Granada in the Spring The city of Granada was the last stronghold in Spain of the Muslim Moorish race who had controlled the Iberian Peninsula for all of 800 years. During their time in Spain they made the city of Cordoba the most populated city in the known world. They were educated people who built some of the worlds earliest universities. Under them medical research in particular blossomed. Then disaster; the city of Cordoba fell to the reconquering Christians. This event forced the Moors to move their seat of power to Granada. Determined to maintain the high standards by which they lived, they chose a site on a red coloured hillside to build what was to become one of the most famous Muslim built collection of Palaces in the western world. This was to become known as “The Alhambra Palaces” (The word Alhambra meaning “the red hill”). It would be difﬁcult to ﬁnd a more beautiful and ornate set of palaces. These palaces were then surrounded by beautiful gardens and many fountains. The Nasrid dynasty

were the masters of all that they surveyed during the time that they lived here in Granada. Even today the city enjoys the feel of its powerful Moorish Past. The market area in the centre of the city has the Moorish horse shoe shaped doors. The narrow cobbled streets that you would associate with the Kasbah lead into bright leafy squares with tinkling fountains. The people here are olive skinned with big soft brown eyes. They sing throaty melancholy songs which tell the story of their exotic past. In the caves ﬁery dancers in ﬂamenco dresses stomp arrogantly, throwing their hands in the air, pained looks on their faces as they stamp, pout and pose to the sounds of strumming Spanish guitars. Viewing points in the heights of the Albaicin, where the old Moorish and Jewish districts merged, overlook the Alhambra palaces. Below this point you can see the powerful outline of the mighty cathedral placed there by the Catholic Monarchs Isabel and Ferdinand

when their troops ﬁnally ended moorish control in Spain with the capture of Granada in the year 1492. They took the city from the Moors, but they couldn’t take the Moors from the city. The spirit of these exotic ,exciting people still lingers in the streets, palaces, squares and caves of this magniﬁcent city.

Samphire & lemony salmon linguine Juicy, salty samphire works really nicely along with the tender fish in this lemony pasta dish Ingredients 2 tbsp olive oil ½ small preserved lemon, flesh and pith scooped out, skin finely chopped 2 large shallots, finely chopped ½ red chilli, finely sliced 1 tbsp finely chopped parsley stalks (reserve the leaves, to serve) small glass of rosé wine or white wine 175g linguine 80g samphire 100g cooked salmon, flaked into large pieces juice ½ lemon Method Heat the olive oil in a heavybottomed, non-stick frying pan or skillet. Add the preserved lemon, shallot, chilli, parsley stalks and seasoning, and sweat for about 5 mins or until

soft and fragrant. Pour in the wine and bubble for 1-2 mins. Meanwhile, bring a large pot of salted water to the boil. Add the linguine and cook following pack instructions until just al dente. Throw the samphire into the water with the linguine. Cook for 30 secs, then drain everything, reserving a few ladlefuls of the pasta water. Add the linguine and samphire to the frying pan with half a ladle of the pasta water. Add the salmon and lemon juice, and stir thoroughly to combine into a sauce, adding a splash more of the water if needed. Season to taste. Divide between plates and grind over some extra black pepper. Garnish with more chopped parsley, if you like.

Prostate-specific antigen, or PSA, is a protein produced by cells of the prostate gland. A PSA test measures the level of PSA in a man’s blood. A blood sample is sent to the laboratory for analysis. The PSA is often elevated in men with prostate cancer. The PSA test was developed to monitor the progression of prostate cancer in men who had already been diagnosed with the disease. Eventually it was used along with a rectal examination to test asymptomatic men for prostate cancer. It is also used to help doctors determine the nature of the problem when men are symptomatic. In addition to prostate cancer a number of non cancerous conditions can cause a man’s PSA level to rise. The most common benign cause of a raised PSA is prostatitis (inflammation of the prostate) and benign prostatic hypoplasia BPH (enlargement of the prostate). There is no evidence that prostatitis or BPH lead to prostate cancer, but you can have one or both of these

conditions and develop prostate cancer as well. What is a normal PSA A level of 4.0 ng/ml and lower is considered normal but this is only a guide. Men with a lower score can still have prostate cancer and men with a higher score may not. This is why the PSA should not be used in isolation but used in conjunction with the international prostate screening score (IPSS) and rectal examination. Other causes of a raised score such as a urinary tract infection or prostatitis should also be excluded. As a rule though the higher a man’s PSA level, the more likely it is that he has prostate cancer. A rise in the PSA over time may also be a sign of prostate cancer. What if the PSA is raised?

If there are no other symptoms other than the raised PSA then it will be repeated usually after 3 months unless it is very raised in which case it will be done sooner. If the PSA is still high the doctor will usually recommend rechecking the PSA regularly and doing rectal examinations to watch for any changes over time. If the PSA continues to rise or if a suspicious lump is detected during a rectal examination additional tests may be recommended to determine the cause of the problem. These may include cystoscopy or ultrasound. If prostate cancer is suspected a prostate biopsy will be performed. Present Subjunctive (4) NOW WE’VE started on the theme of subjunctives, we’re going to go through to the end. Notice I missed out the word “bitter” because subjunctives are “sweet”, once you get to know them. Although there is some truth in the statement that as non-native Spanish speakers we can get away without using them and be perfectly well understood, it is also true that they are an integral part of structure of language and are also closely linked to forms of courtesy, which is something that does tend to concern us when we are communicating. Anyway, this article is devoted exclusively to mechanics, that is, to the conjugation of the present subjunctive, before we turn back again to where and how it is used. As I have mentioned before, we base the conjugation of the present subjunctive on the first person singular of the present tense. With most standard verbs this is a simple procedure. Here are examples of –ar, –er and –ir verbs. Hablar (first person singular “hablo” – final letter change – “hable”) hable hablemos hables habléis hable hablen Beber (first person singular “bebo” – final letter change – “beba”) beba bebamos bebas bebáis beba beban

Mobile Phone Use on the Increase

Despite the warning, fines, threats and fatalities, the use of mobile phones whilst driving is on the increase. The invention of the smart phone hasn´t helped, with many people keen to constantly monitor and update their social network profiles, keep up to date with what their friends are doing, and make sure nothing is missed. From the 1st of March in the UK, drivers using their mobile phone face even tougher fines than before, with a 200 pound fine and 6 points on their licence. For new drivers the penalties are even tougher. If you´re caught using your mobile whilst driving in the first two-years after passing your test, it´s all over. You immediately lose your licence and face a retest. Many people, including those who have fallen victim of drivers distracted using their mobile, may well argue that the penalties are still not severe enough. After all, despite mobile phone use fines

being amongst the most popular issued, using the mobile is still not considered a problem by some. In the UK, the awareness of the dangers of using a mobile fall under the “FATAL4”, where inappropriate speed, using mobile phones while driving, not wearing seatbelts and drinking or drug and driving are highlighted as being the four biggest contributors to fatal collisions. Of course, the point really is that the FATAL4 are all within the control of the driver, and so individual responsibility is paramount. The action of “using a mobile phone” is also seemingly confusing for some, including here in Spain. Just because it is not near your ear, or you are holding in on “speaker” does not constitute safe practice, you are still using your mobile. The same applies to updating social media or using WhatsApp, the actions still

cause distractions and are not allowed. We must also remember that in Spain, the use of Bluetooth earpieces and headsets is also banned whilst driving. The only safe way of using a mobile is by having

a true hands-free device in the vehicle, although still can still be a distraction. Currently, if you´re caught using your mobile phone in Spain you face a 200 euro fine and the loss of 3 points.

WHEN A friend needs a shipment of books collecting from the docks it is extremely convenient that I am testing the new Skoda Fabia Estate.

ATHOUGH ONLY a small car, it has a surprisingly large boot, large enough in fact to swallow 1,000 books, once I’ve loaded each of the 13 sizeable and fairly heavy cartons. One of the rear seats has to be pushed down to accommodate two of the cartons but Heidi (2) is quite happy sitting beside them in her car seat. We have started the process of selling our house and although we started throwing out much of the stuff we have accumulated over the years, there has still been enough to ﬁll the Skoda’s boot. That boot is also ﬁtted with an easy to operate cover so that its contents can be hidden from prying eyes. This is truly a versatile vehicle because it is large enough for a family of four with plenty of legroom fore and aft. This Skoda really does rise to most challenges a family will throw its way. One minute it will be a reliable commuter, the next it could carry a kayak or bikes on the roof thanks to its roof bars and then of course it

is a useful load-lugger. Add to this the fact that its tiddly little 1.2-litre petrol engine returns on average around 60mpg. Despite its small engine it is still quite swift reaching 60mph from standstill in just 9.6secs, going on to a 124mph top speed. Not so long ago you would never have thought ‘It feels like an Audi,’ but it does because not only does it look classy with its clean lines and attractive design it feels well put together and there’s a good quality interior. I am testing the SE L version, which comes with a list of features as long as your arm, including 16 inch alloy wheels, acoustic rear parking sensors, black roof rails and tyre pressure monitoring. This model only has electric front windows which means that the little urchins in the rear can wind the windows down. Designing a car interior is a difﬁcult thing to do successfully because it needs to be hardwearing but also comfortable and sophisticated if it is ever going to woo a buyer. It is always interesting to see what new ideas designers come up with and what is carried over from other vehicles. There is brushed aluminium on the dashboard, a growing fashion, particularly in Audis. There are plenty of cubbyholes and pockets for odds

and ends, but the little rubbish bin the driver’s door with its tiny sandwich bag sized bin bag is, in my opinion, taking things a little bit too far. Whether I would use the little pockets on the side of the front seats to store pens or not, I am not sure. They might be handy for sweets on a long journey but, if forgotten about, the sweets could melt and ruin the upholstery. The black upholstery incorporates funky white patterns that liven it up. What this Skoda scores highly on is its load carrying ability and clever use of storage space; there are even storage compartments under the front seats. Alfaz fantasy football league FIVE TEAMS didn’t contribute to this weeks Alfaz Fantasy Football League and they were Manchester United,Southampton who were both involved in the EFL Cup Final and Manchester City who should have been playing in a Manchester Derby. As a former club cricketer both in the UK and in Spain and a keen follower of the game at international level for 45 years, I’ve always been a traditionalist in my opinions on the development of the game. I have to reluctantly accept, without liking it, that money has taken over the sport and that the razzmatazz 20/20 format is going to be the choice of the masses in the future. However, there are changes in the game that I cannot and never will embrace, and a perfect example has surfaced in the past week. The Chief Executive of the Western Australia Cricket Association wants traditional cricketing terms such as ‘12th man’ and ‘third man’ to be scrapped to encourage more women and girls to take

up the sport. Instead, Christina Matthews wants such phrases replaced with the genderneutral ‘12th’, ‘third’ and even ‘batter’ replacing ‘batsman’ or ‘batswoman’. She believes that “words matter” and that cricket needs to be “more inclusive”. She told Australian publication ‘Perth Now’: “Here we are, in 2017, using terms such as 12th man, batsman, ﬁeldsman and night-watchman. In my view, there’s no common sense reason why [the terms can’t be changed]. I think it’s just something people have held on to.” Ms Matthews added: “Words matter and words demonstrate respect as well. By not changing the terms, you’re disrespecting half the population. “I’m not saying people are deliberately trying to offend but it’s a bit like bullying - whether you’re bullied or not is

dictated by the person who is on the end of it, not the person who’s doing it.” Piepa Cleary, a fast bowler for the Perth Scorchers backs Christina’s views. She said: “Everyone still says female athletes or female cricket, but we’re athletes

playing cricket. We need to stop being compared to the men’s game and be recognised for playing the same sport in our own ﬁeld. It’s going to take a long time to change, but hopefully it will start to happen sooner rather than later.”

Once again Monte kicked off in front of a large following of Monte fans hoping to make it 14 games without losing. After only eight minutes Monte took the lead when Carlos Lorente received a fabulous pass from Vaz, and broke through from the right-hand side and beat the goalkeeper with a ﬁerce drive. From the kick-off Atletico lost possession and Carlos Ventura ran through to double the lead leaving Monte two up after only nine minutes. Atletico started to get on top and it needed a good double save from Dani to retain the Monte lead. One minute later Dani was called on to make another great save this time in the top corner. Vaz then sent a shot just inches past the post with their goalkeeper well beaten. Over the next few minutes both goalkeepers made excellent saves

before the Atletico number 9 broke through from a very suspicious offside position, and reduced the leadon 32 minutes. The home side were kept in the game when their goalkeeper made yet another good save. Much to the relief of the Monte fans the Atletico centre forward missed 2 great chances just before half time. The second half started like the ﬁrst with Vaz being poleaxed and again needing treatment. Moments after Carlos Lorente ﬁred just wide. Monte were awarded a penalty. Their goalkeeper saved what could only be described a weak attempt from Vaz of all people. We all wondered if this would be a game changer. On 65 minutes Dani stood and watched the ball roll for a dead ball, only for it to be pulled back across the goal for an Atletico forward to tap into an empty net. 2-2 game on. Immediately, Monte made a double substitution with German and Pley replacing Coco and Fran. Monte then picked up the pace and had 2 near misses before Dario replaced Dimitri.

Dani once again made a great one-handed save from a close range and from the kick up ﬁeld Vaz made up for his penalty miss by bursting through 2 defenders to restore our lead on 85 minutes. Monte then made their 4th substitution with Alberto replacing Carlos Lorente. In the 2nd minute of time added on Carlos Ventura got his second goal by beating the defence and rounding the goalkeeper before clinically ﬁnishing the move off to seal another win for Monte. Overall a very physical game, with 8 yellow cards issued to

the Atletico team resulting in a double yellow for one of them. Not one of the yellow cards was for any of the 8 recorded fouls on Vaz, 2 of them requiring on-ﬁeld treatment. Monte received just the one yellow card. Vaz was everywhere on the ﬁeld and it came as no surprise that he collapsed with exhaustion in extra time.
