Millions in the bank...the food bank Until the end of April, the Spanish Red Cross (Cruz Roja) and the official food bank for the area (Banco de Alimentos) will be distributing almost 1.7 million kilos of food to the most vulnerable people in the Alicante region. by Darren James This latest scheme brings to an end the third and final phase of the Ayuda Alimentaria (Food Aid programme) which will end up distributing a remarkable amount of 5,000,000 kilos of food. According to a report in the Spanish publication ‘Informacion’, the programme has seen a major collaboration between the Spanish Ministries of Health, Social Services and Equality, Employment and Social Security and Agriculture, Food & Environment. It’s been co-financed with 85% coming from the FEAD (European Fund for the disadvantaged) and

The foods in these packages are very basic but vital. Hardly any of the products are perishable and are easy to store and transport. A

typical food parcel includes an average of 14 products such as white rice, lentils, baby jars, baby cereal, powdered milk, UHT milk, olive oil, canned tuna, pasta, fried tomatoes, crackers, canned fruit without added sugar and canned green beans. It’s anticipated that 105,000 disadvantaged people in the area will benefit the most from the scheme.

Brexit – just how safe are we? Representatives of the local San Fulgencio PIPN political party, the MUNA residents association and local business attended an informal meeting on Monday afternoon in La Marina with the British Consul to Alicante, Sarah-Jane Morris. by Darren James Also at the meeting was Julia Longbottom, Director for Consular Affairs at the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) in London. As Article 50 has still to be formally triggered by Theresa May, and therefore no negotiations have yet taken place, no new information was available at this time. It was emphasised by those at the meeting that the growing uncertainty of the status of British residents in the area fuelled by a certain degree of misinformation needs to be addressed as soon as possible. The future plans of many were being put on hold, and this included those of the political parties whose British members and their potential voters would be prevented, under current laws, from voting and standing at the next Municipal elections in May 2019. The Consul, Mrs Morris, confirmed that such concerns, along with those of future provision of healthcare, annual pension increases and the rights to reside and work once

the UK leave the EU, have been regularly passed through to the UK Government in London and they will continue to be so as a result of such meetings. It was reiterated once again that those people who are living in Spain should make themselves as legal in the country as it is possible to be. This includes registering on the Padron, taking out Residencia, obtaining Spanish driving licenses etc., and that there had been an encouraging rush of people following this advice in recent months. The future negotiations between the UK and the EU in general, and Spain in particular, will need to have the most accurate numbers possible of people living in the country to aid with those negotiations. Ms Longbottom from the FCO was asked for clarification on the often quoted statement emanating from the UK Parliament and is on the official EU website which states: “If you have lived legally, meeting the conditions to stay in another EU country for a continuous period of 5 years you automati-

cally acquire the right of permanent residence there. This means that you can stay in the country as long as you want.” The point was raised that if this was indeed the case, then why can’t those falling into this criteria, of which there are many both living in the UK and in the

EU, be fully assured officially of their future status rather than being left in the current state of limbo? Similarly, the subject of “Acquired Rights” was raised, especially as it has been recently stated that such rights only apply to a nation state and not individuals as had previously

Barcelona gas truck panic Panic swept the streets of Barcelona on Tuesday morning when a man drove a truck full to the brim with the instantly recognisable orange gas bottles through the outskirts of the city. by darren james The alarm was raised by the owner of the vehicle who reported it stolen just after 11am and both local and regional police stormed into immediate action. According to a press conference held around lunchtime, a police spokesman stated that there was no indication that this was terrorist related, subsequently confirmed by the Spanish Interior Minister Juan Ignacio Zoido, and the suspect was not armed. As the high speed chase unfolded, a local police officer tried to stop the truck by firing at the wheels but failed to prevent any further progress. Six further shots were fired at the truck by the Mossos d’Esquadra – the Barcelona police force – before finally being stopped by other members of the local police at Exit 22 of the Barcelona Ring Road as it attempted to drive against oncoming traffic. The driver, named as 32-year old Joakim Robin Berggren from Sweden, was arrested at the scene and is currently being held in a Barcelona

hospital undergoing both psychiatric and possible substance abuse tests. He was not injured by the police during or after the chase, despite some earlier suggestions that he had been shot and killed. Witnesses reported to Spanish news agencies that “dozens” of police surrounded the vehicle within moments of it coming to a halt; some armed with sub-machine guns, and noticed a few bullet holes in the front of the truck. The only minor injury reported from the incident, that had the potential to be extremely serious, was a passer-by being hit by one of the butane gas bottles that flew from the truck during the chase. mAs the investigation into the incident made progress on Wednesday, Catalan Interior Minister Jordi Jane confirmed that the arrested Swedish national had only flown into Barcelona on Monday and had partied “all night”. His actions were described as “improvised and not planned” although he had earlier attempted to stop several cars and steal a motorbike before stealing the truck laden with butane canisters.

Where sport and politics do meet UK Championship football team QPR are kicking unfairness towards the military out of football, by becoming the first London football league club to sign the Armed Forces Covenant. by DARREN JAMES THE CLUB, which has pledged to help service leavers and veterans achieve their goals and find jobs with its Community Trust work skills programme, run in conjunction with the Royal British Legion, signed the covenant during their match with fellow Covenant members Wigan on Tuesday. The scheme, which helps personnel prepare for life after the military, has already helped half of its previously unemployed participants find work. Defence Minister Mark Lancaster, who attended the signing, with the Chief of Defence People Lt General Richard Nugee, said: “It is great to see that QPR are signing the Armed Forces Covenant. The success of their employability programme shows how a football club can help service leavers and veterans improve skills and find jobs. I encourage other clubs to support the covenant and ensure all those who serve or have served, and their families, are treated fairly.” QPR have also pledged to work with the Ministry of Defence’s Career Transition Partnership (CTP) to provide a career pathway for personnel leaving the Armed Forces, and to support club employees who are training or deployed as Reservists. QPR’s CEO Lee Hoos said: “I’m very proud that we are the first London club to sign the Armed Forces covenant. This will build on the strong relationship the club already has with the local Armed Forces community, including 4 PARA and the White City cadets, as well as the employability programme we recently ran with the Royal British Legion for Armed Forces veterans.” The Armed Forces Covenant is a com-mitment from the nation, enshrined in law, that those who serve or have served, and their families, are treated fairly. Over 1,440 businesses and organisations across the UK have already signed, making practical pledges that have made a difference across the Armed Forces community.

Attack in nursing home by PIPPA HOLMAN On Sunday 19th February 2017, an 86-year-old British man was arrested after allegedly assaulting a woman, aged 79, in a nursing home in El Campello (Alicante). The man in question will undergo a psychological examination due to self harming after the attack. The incident happened at 9am between the victim and the attacker who shared a room in a home for the elderly accord-

ing to a source of the investigation. The victim suffered wounds by a weapon including one that was ‘deep in the neck’. Due to his self harming after the assault, which has left him with superﬁcial wounds, he was arrested and transferred to the psychiatric area of a hospital. Once the psychological exam is complete the attacker will go to court for his crime. It is believed that this is a case of domestic abuse. Al-

though, the Local Violence Unit of the Local Police of El Campello have stated that there is no history of domestic violence between the couple and there is no record of a previous episode such as this one. The Valencia government has expressed its condemnation of this ‘macho murder’ of the woman and has called a rally in repulse for the crime. The City of El Campello will honour a minutes silence to this terrible attack.

Contents & not contents The debate on the Bill giving the UK Prime Minister Theresa May the authority to formally trigger Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty moved to the House of Lords this week. by Darren James This comes following the overwhelming decision of the House of Commons to support the Bill by 494 votes to 122 votes and a majority of 372 and amid not so subtle warnings from MPs on both sides of the argument to their Lordship’s House not to scupper the measure before them. Such an outcome would, in the words of some, resemble a turkey voting for their own Christmas. Whilst it’s accepted that the House of Lords won’t block the Bill, it will be no surprise to see it returned to the House of Commons with a series of amendments, especially one that guarantees the rights of EU nationals living in the UK. Debated over two days with both sittings ending shortly after Midnight, there was a refreshing sensibility and civility brought to the proceedings, as is always the case in the Upper House, with uninterrupted contributions from a record number of 183 Lords from all parties and both Leavers and Remainers.

Those following the debate would’ve recognised many of the former MPs that served in both Margaret Thatcher and John Major’s cabinets, commenting on a subject that ultimately proved the downfall of them both. Lords Hague, Forsyth, Lawson, Lang and Lamont among many Conservatives were split in their EU voting but all urged their colleagues to support the Bill before them without amendment. William Hague said: “To ask people to “rise up” to fight Brexit—the words a few days ago of the former Prime Minister Tony Blair—is a great mistake. I have enormous respect for him - more than many in his own party have particularly as he roundly defeated me in the 2001 general election. But if, nine months after that, I had asked people to “rise up” against the result, Mr Blair would not have been amused.” The other side of the argument came from the little known Lord Livermore, a Labour peer and former political strategist. Talking of the £350m to be spent on the NHS and other similar claims he said: “They were fake promises and false assurances,

specifically designed to deceive.” He continued: “I believe that those who voted for Brexit in the greatest numbers will suffer most from the outcome. I believe that the very real problems in their lives were not caused by the European Union, and will not be solved by our leaving. I believe we will do them no favours by pretending otherwise.” The final words can be left to Conservative peer Lord Bridges of Headley, “Finally, whether one voted to leave or remain, we can all agree that, after 20 hours of debate, it is time not to remain but to leave this House and to go to bed.” Any votes on the amendments tabled will take place next week. Animal Abuse and Fraud charges for Alcoy Veterinarian The Chief of Staff of the National Police has released a statement addressing the appalling case of a 46-year-old veterinarian who practised in the Alicante town of Alcoy. by PIPPA HOLMAN Using client information the accused would register veterinary insurance policies to their animals. The suspect would then diagnose these, often nonexistant, animals and collect fictitious interventions such as blood extractions without carrying out the corresponding analytical, X-rays or endoscopies in order to collect the insurance claims. In May last year, the investigation began after the complaint of a dog owner had accused the veterinarian of cheating her on administering vaccines to her pet. From this, other testimonies were collected in order to build the case. Researchers found that this doctor has drawn blood from the animals without performing the tests and falsifying the results. The complaints range from false diagnosis of ingesting fictional dangerous objects to actually sacrificing someoneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s beloved pet for no justifiable reason. Under further inspection by the agents it was seen that the Veterinary clinic also showed irregularities. Such as, syringes with blood without refrigeration and expired vaccines.

Davis – full of Eastern European promise During the first leg of his Baltic tour on a visit to Estonia, Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union. by DARREN JAMES David Davis, has said that the UK will not instantly close the door on the large numbers of low-skilled migrants working in areas of employment such as the catering and farming industries. Mr Davis stated that it would probably take a significant period of time to get British people to undertake the wide variety of jobs in many areas of work that the EU workers currently do when Britain finally leaves the EU. The Brexit Secretary told reporters in the Estonian capital Tallinn at the start of his visit at the

beginning of the week that: “In the hospitality sector, hotels and restaurants, in the social-care sector, working in agriculture, it will take time - it will be years and years before we get British citizens to do those jobs. Don’t expect just because we’re changing who makes the decision on the policy, the door will suddenly shut: it won’t.” Ahead of his trip to Estonia, which has also taken in neighbouring EU countries Latvia and Lithuania, Mr Davis said: “I understand that the 15,000 Estonians currently living in the UK want certainty about their

rights once the UK leaves the EU. And while Estonians’ existing rights are not affected the British government wants to get a deal done to secure long term rights quickly that protects the rights of all EU citizens living in the UK, and British citizens living in the EU. Indeed we would have liked to have come to such an agreement already, and have been clear it will be an absolute priority once formal negotiations begin.” The Brexit Secretary was very keen to build on the already fine relationship between the UK and Estonia. “I’m confident that if we ap-

proach negotiations over the UK’s exit and new partnership with the EU in a spirit of goodwill, we can deliver a positive outcome that works for all. Estonia and the UK will remain close partners. And my message to you, as the first UK Cabinet minister to visit Estonia since the UK voted to leave the EU, is that our important relationship will not diminish after our exit. Indeed, it will grow stronger still.”

Man savagely Caterpillars be gone! killed by 5 dogs The technical services in Finestrat have finished the fumigation of the pine processionary caterpillars as well as the red palm weevil in the green areas surrounding the town.

A 65-year-old man from the Beniarbeig estate, Alicante, was savagely killed by his neighbours dangerous dogs. The victim left his house to venture down the the family owned field close by. Later that day, after no response when trying to contact his father, the said victim’s son travelled down to the farm as that is where he would spend a large amount of his time. The son of the victim came across a blood filled site with his father dead on the floor. The bites and tears of flesh from the man’s arms, legs and head have left the scene looking like something from a horror film, leaving the cause of death to be believed as due to blood loss. Police suspected it was an animal attack when they discovered blood covered paw prints around the scene. After some investigating, they uncovered the neighboured owned dogs that were regarded as being a dangerous breed. Under further inspection it was found the owner did not hold the correct documentation for the animals, neither the correct permissions. As they entered the neighbours property, they noticed the dogs has no traces of blood but one of the dogs was dripping wet as if it had just been bathed. As the owner did not have the correct paperwork for the dogs he is been accused or reckless homicide, further seeing that only one of the dogs was chipped and previous complaints of a lesser nature had been made to the local police. The dogs were removed from the owners care and are currently being helped by Seprona agents. Since taken into their care one of the dogs has bitten a helper of the care team and completely destroyed the caging in which they are kept over night. Dangerous dogs like in the case, pitbulls, are known for their unstable character and without the right training it leads to a possibility of the animal becoming aggressive. To make matters worse, when they are in a pack, like these 5, often they are lead by the most aggressive.

The areas that have been worked are El Catell and around El Balcon de Finestrat, where the primary and infant schools are situated.

The canary Island date palm trees are a common housing for the red palm weevil, which can be found all around the areas. The team tackled these palm trees in order to control the plague that is very common around this time of year. Tomas Selles, the technical services counselor, has assured us that they have tackled palm trees situated in the Font de Moli, the park La Glorieta (in front of Puig Campana), Avenida Benidorm, Avenida America and the roundabout of the commercial boulovard. Some other scattered areas of La Cala have also been

covered, such as, Avenida Marina Baixa, Torres de les Mecanes and the Avenida de las Mimosas. Selles has stated, “Every year, these plagues are tackled between January and March as the processionary pine caterpillars have yet to reach the stage where they’re off the tree and onto the floor, this way we can prevent any danger to domestic animals and children. That is why it is so important to focus on the areas around these schools.” If you feel that your child or pet has been in contact with these creatures, please seek medical help immediately.

Fast and Furious

A 70-year-old lady was caught driving at speeds of over 145 km/h in a road that had restrictions at just 50km/h. The Guardia Civil intervened and were lucky to stop the lady and explain the terrible danger she had put herself and more importantly the public in by driving at the speeds. She will be charged under the crime againt road safety under article 379 of the criminal code.. The speeding happened on the N65 passing through Cistierna. The penalties for a vehicle travelling over 60km/h within these speed restricted areas can be imprisonment from 3 to 6 months, a substantial fine, community service and in most cases having the driving license revoked.

Bioparc Offering Mhorr Last week the visitors of the Bioparc in Valencia, witnessed a truly magical moment when a Mhorr gazelle was born. The small female now shares the savannah enclosure with a male and 2 other females, which are also expected to be pregnant. The gazelle is part of an endangered species and is being monitored and fed by the technical team through bottles to ensure a successful growth and adaptation to the herd. This is the third Mhorr gazelle born in Bioparc Valencia, promoting the successful work they do in the conservation of this endangered species. Different institutions cooperate with the Bioparc in order to allow the animals to adapt and to be reintroduced to its natural environment. The Mhorr gazelle is the largest of the gazelles in the world reaching up to 70kg in weight and is recognisable by its white fur covered body with a reddish brown on its back and the prominent horn that forms in an “s” shape.

D’Souza puts D’knife in I’m sure I’m getting a reputation among many of my Facebook friends as quickly becoming a misinformation Caped Crusader! NO...NOT driving around the streets of the urbanizacion with a ﬂame blasting out of the back of my aging Ford Mondeo a la Batmobile saving our own Gotham “La Marina” City – although courtesy of a frustrating hole in the exhaust, you might just hear me coming. I’m certain that’s the only possible reason I’m stared at when I’m behind the wheel. It seems that almost all of my time spent on social media, which thanks to this new role with the Xpat News will be signiﬁcantly reduced, is concerned with correcting and bringing to the attention of my contacts the ever increasing amount of Fake News and yes, lies, that are circulating in cyber space. If

it’s not there already, I’m sure that the phrase Fake News will be the top of the list of the new entries to the Oxford English Dictionary for 2017! Whilst more and more people appear to be trusting their news sources less and less, (with the exception of the Xpat News, of course), a signiﬁcant number are still believing the headline and the sound bite as being the gospel truth, commenting accordingly and sharing that on to many thousands of others in the process. Take, for example, the report as part of the BBC News on Monday to coincide with their promotion of the new documentary series on BBC2 beginning next week – Inside the Lords.

One of the contributors to the programme, former Lords Speaker Baroness D’Souza, seemed to get great delight at criticising some of her colleagues of Her Ladyship’s House and the alleged lack of work they do whilst at the same time collecting their £300 daily attendance fee. She said: “I can remember one occasion when I was leaving the House quite late and there was a peer - who shall be utterly nameless - who jumped out of a taxi just outside the peers’ entrance, left the engine running. He ran in, presumably to show that he’d attended, and then ran

out again while the taxi was still running.” You can imagine what members of the Twitterati were saying and in the comments section of online editions of less than moralistic national newspapers. But a look at just half a dozen words in that statement might throw a whole new light on what the Noble Baroness said. “Presumably to show that he’d attended.” She wasn’t certain, or sure or positive. It was “presumed”, and the fact that she’d earlier stated that the peer “shall be utterly nameless” suggests to me a certain stirring of the pot. The damage has been done.

Neymar likely to stand trial for tax fraud Spanish courts have this week dismissed appeals from Neymar and Barcelona over the alleged fraud and corruption in the Barcelona players transfer from Brazilian side Santos back in in 2013. Barcelona football club published the transfer figure as €57 million with €40 million of that given to the player’s family however Spanish authorities believe that figure was well over €80 million. Last year prosecutors said the star, who is earing well over €100 thousand per week, should be jailed for two years and given a fine. The case has developed when a Brazilian company named DIS, who own 40% of Neymar’s sporting rights, alleged they received close to €7 million (40% of the fee paid to Santos) and claimed they had been ‘cheated’ out of the real share due to the transfer fee not been publicly shown by Barcelona and the players representatives.

The post received over 400 shares and had 20,000 views and now the police have given a proposal to fine the man behind the camera, using Spain’s law on Public Safety, more commonly know as the ‘gag law’. Pie eating… The next level Sutton United reserve goalkeeper Wayne Shaw is currently under investigation from the Gambling Commission for eating a pie (or a pasty) during Monday night’s loss in the FA Cup to Arsenal. Selling at giveaway prices MANY BRITISH ex-pats are more or less selling their properties at giveaway prices in a panic to get back to the UK. THIS HAS given the impression that the value of all properties on the Costa Blanca have fallen. I would advise them research prices, before they approach an estate agent. The apparent fall in prices are caused by some British property owners finding themselves in financial difficulties because of the low exchange rate, being unable to pay their mortgages or having lost their local jobs, having to either return their properties to the banks or sell their particular property quickly at a knock-down price in order to return to the UK. Some pensioners, relying only on the State pension, have also found themselves in the same predicament, mainly because of the rate of exchange. This is a joy to some unscrupulous estate agents who are quick to advise ANY seller that their asking price is too high. The estate agent may even appear on your doorstep with a fist-full of property advertisements showing you that similar houses are much

Benidorm occupation drops Benidorm, the British tourist capital of Spain, has dropped 6 per cent in occupation this year from 77.5% going down to 71.5% at the start of 2017. by PIPPA HOLMAN This however does not mean that the hotels are suffering. Fallas is once again upon us with the firecrackers, the pyrotechnics and the burning flames! Don’t expect much sleep throughout the month of March, especially in Valencia! Fallas officially is celebrated from 15th-19th of March each year but in the City of Valencia they have a fiesta lasting from the 1st - 19th of the month. Each day at 2pm, you can head to the Plaza Ayuntamiento, joining tens of thousands to enjoy the Mascleta. For those of you who don’t know, Mascleta is daytime fireworks that set off almighty bangs and go off in quick succession to great, loud and energetic atmosphere! Although they don’t last for long (between 5-9 minutes), The sheer impact of the noise will make the windows shake and spectators faint in this amazing tradition. Throughout the City you will see hundred of cartoon like statues that stand metres high of the ground. Each of these normally have a political or sarcastic statement involved and represented in a fun way for all to enjoy. On the 19th (Saint Joseph’s Day) all of these statues are burned to the ground, except one, which is voted to remain in the Fallas Museum of Valencia. On March 18th at midnight, in the bed of the River Turia, Valencia, you can witness an outstanding firework display that illuminates the sky and attracts people from all parts of the world. A must see I you never have before.

Marching on together by JACK TROUGHTON EXPAT CHARITIES are successfully working together to help the whole Costa Blanca community – the latest example a new hospice bed for the MABS Cancer Support Group. MABS, Cancer Care Javea, and the Teulada Moraira, joined forces to make a much-needed care facility available; sadly, with people already waiting. And MABS now has ﬁve such hospice rooms along the coast offering ‘end of life’ care – which, alternatively, can also offer respite beds to give carers a necessary break. The charity opens its doors to everyone; expats from across Europe and beyond, and Spanish nationals. Cancer Care has stood up to the mark by paying the ﬁrst year’s rent at the Ana Maria Espinos Residential Home in Teulada, 18,000 Euros. The charity also wants a second room at the facility to ease pressure of people needing such care. Teulada Moraira Lions is also

involved in the project, providing a sofa bed to allow relatives the chance to stay over with loved ones. The British Embassy in Madrid and consulates across Spain aim to link up expat charities and build communications with Spanish associations – like the Red Cross - and social services to improve the lot of foreign residents. Alicante Vice Consul Elizabeth Bell was at the ceremony on Friday to cut the ribbon to ofﬁcially open Room 009; she said it was “marvellous” and “fantastic” to see what charities could achieve across the Costa Blanca. SUPPORT “It is also very good to see charities supporting each other. It is great to see and shows what can be achieved,” she added. Jacqui Phillips MBE, President of MABS, said the room was made possible through a “joint effort” with Cancer Care for the ﬁrst time and the Lions.

“The room we have taken is obviously to be used by terminally ill people or to offer respite for someone and giver their family or carers a bit of a break,” she said. “It is the ﬁrst time we have worked together with Cancer Care and I hope the ﬁrst of many. “The room is for anyone suffering from cancer; of any nationality, religion or gender.

There is no discrimination whatsoever in what we do.” And Cancer Care Javea President Lyn Buntrock said the association was able to fund many cancer linked projects and thanks to a hard-working team of volunteers, a lot of money was raised. She said she told MABS it was “brilliant” Cancer Care was able to support a hospice room in the Javea, Teulada and Moraira

area. “It is very much needed, we have people waiting to come in here,” added Lyn. “Maybe it is just the ﬁrst of a couple of rooms needed in this area. We are so pleased that Cancer Care Javea can work with MABS and launch this today.” MABS now has two hospice rooms in Fontilles, near Orba; the new Teulada facility; a room in La Nucia and a ﬁfth room in Orihuela.

Juan Soler kidnap trial postponed Former Valencia CF president Juan Soler was due to appear in court on 23rd February 2017, for conspiring to kidnap the former club president Vicente Soriano. by PIPPA HOLMAN The trial as been postponed and will be held on 25th and 26th October 2017. The prosecution is demanding nine months of imprisonment for Soler and 2 others for the crime of illegal detention, with which was sought to pay off an economic debt. Soler and his accomplices were planning

to kidnap Soriano outside of a well known coffee shop on the street of Isabel la Cotolica in the City of Valencia, and take him in a van, to a place in Calle Alfafar to be held until they were paid. This case was closed in July 2015, but reopened after resorting to dismissal of both Vicente Soriano and the Prosecutor.

Mayor of Alfaz del Pi in Court for Embezzlement and Documentary Falsification by PIPPA HOLMAN

A judge in Benidorm held proceeding with the mayor of Alfaz del Pi, the socialist Vicente Arques, along with the councilor of Hacienda, Maite Garcia. The original hearing was initially for 25th January 2017 but was postponed due to allegations of his lawyer being on sick leave. The crimes of prevarication, embezzlement of public funds and falsification of documentary evidence were being looked at after the financing of a burial of an official and allegedly falsifying the conditions of and using municipal means for an act of the PSOE. The judge made it clear that this time the case will be heard with or without the help of their legal assistance. The investigation began at first with a denunciation from a neighbour for using public funds to pay for the funeral and the presumed use of materials and personal means of public ownership for private use of the socialist party according to sources. Maite Huerta, stressed that the mayor “will sit on the bench to declare after all his attempts to avoid it” alluding to his judicial strategy or asserting his status as deputy Autonomy in the Valencian Courts, to his understanding, to delay the process. Huerta also revealed to the court that Arques “has lost 29 contentious resources for violating fundamental rights”, after complaints from the popular for not facilitating and denying access to official documentation in different files.

2 birds with 1 stone The National Police of Alicante again were called to a case of domestic violence. The victim dialled 091 to report the assault from her boyfriend who had allegedly cut several wounds in his hand. Several patrols were called to the scene. The victim had escaped by foot by the time the first patrol has arrived and was accompanied to Alicante General Hospital to be treated by the injuries she had suffered.

When the police arrived the aggressor was encouraging the dog to attack them on entry and gave out continuous barking. After 45 minutes of negotiations, the police contacted the Court of Instruction in charge of Alicante police and they were granted access to the house for humanitarian reasons immediately, as according to the victim of the aggression, it was the intention of her boyfriend to take his own life. The door was broken down to

reveal a man of semi-consciousness and a knife with blood stains on. He was taken to hospital after a medical team attended the scene. The man of 34-years-old will be charged with domestic violence for allegedly attacking his girlfriend with a weapon. Thanks to the quick response of the police service the victim was helped, the boyfriends life was saved and we will deal with the justice he deserves for the crimes he has committed.

The year of the Jellyfish The Oceanographic of Valencia will this year be celebrating the year of the jellyfish.

Avanqua, the management company of the complex, will be showcasing the information that we have discovered about these fascinating creatures, while displaying thousands of specimens over 16 species from around the world. These will be taken from other exhibitions such as Vancouver, Berlin, Vienna or Beijing. As well, from aquariums such as San Sebastian and Madrid while private fishermen will be making donations to the exhibitions also. The research for the cultivation and conservation of the jellyfish will also be shown in order to show what measures we must take in order to protect and maintain the amount of jellyfish that we have within the oceans. With a large program of activities that the Oceanographic has for 2017, the Jellyfish Exhibitions are one that have really caught our eye. With the project being lead by Xoan Dominguez, along with the general director, Juan Jose Torre, and deputy director, Eduardo Nogues, you are sure to be astounded by what you will learn about these creatures that have “between 500 and 600 years of history”.

All change for the £1 coin It’s all change for the pound in the pocket with a new 12-sided £1 coin being introduced as from Tuesday 28th March with the aim of cutting down on fraud, but there are fears it will cause chaos for businesses and local authorities in the UK. by darren james Speaking after the formal announcement, the Automatic Vending Association said it expects the changes to cost £100m for the industry, while a Local Government Association spokesman said: “Councils have experienced substantial budget reductions and adapting parking metres is likely to be a further cost burden.” It is believed that around 40% of machines in total will have to be adapted to enable them to accept the new £1, each needing to have their mechanisms manually removed and updated. The new £1 will be made of two metals: nickel-brass on the outside and nickelplated solid alloy on the inside, which also makes it harder to fake, according to experts.

More than 45 million counterfeit £1 coins are estimated to be in circulation – three per cent of the total. The new model is said to be the most secure coin in the world as the design, including its 12-sided shape, makes it a lot harder to copy than the existing round pound, and new security features include a hologram-like image that changes from a £ symbol to the number 1 when the coin is seen from different angles. The Queen appears in a portrait designed by Royal Mint coin designer Jody Clark, while the tail side was created by David Pearce, a schoolboy from Walsall, following a public design competition. His entry, adapted by artist David Lawrence, features the English rose, the Welsh leek, the Scottish thistle and the Northern Irish shamrock, all emerging from one stem.

The new coin that many people of a certain generation will recognise as resembling the old threepenny bit will weigh 0.3oz (8.75g) and be 0.1ins (2.8mm) thick. Once the new coin is introduced at the end of next month, both coins will be accepted for a period of only six months. People are urged to check their savings Piggy Banks and gallon bottles of Scotch whisky for the old coins as the current £1 will have its legal tender status removed in September 2017, some 34 years after it first appeared.

Hi Aunty, The problem I am having is when I click onto the attachment I wish to send the pc freezes. This has only started to happen in the past few days. Can you help. PJ Aunty says: It may be that the file association for that attachment, which tells Windows what program to use to open that attachment, is not set up correctly. If not set up, Windows can freeze as it simply does not know what program to use to open up the attachment. Now what program you use

to open that attachment, depends on the type of attachment. If you save the attachment to your PC, and then right click on the attachment, and then â&#x20AC;&#x153;Open Withâ&#x20AC;?, you can then choose which program to open that attachment up in. If you are having issues with sending attachment, well that depends

THE SAGA starts on a pirate radio station based on a rust bucket of a ship called The Voice Of Peace. The VOP was rumoured to have been bankrolled by John Lennon or the CIA, or both, & transmitted in English,Hebrew & Arabic anchored on a very salty bit of the Med, where it’s virtually impossible to drown. If Natalie Wood had fallen (accidentally??) into this sea instead of the Paciﬁc she’d still be with us. Don’t mean to start a theological punch-up, but could that be how JC did the walking on water bit? – now if we can just suss out the water to wine conundrum. So here I am with a bunch of scurvy knaves and Captain Codpiece who was as camp as a Scout Jamboree in Alan Carr’s back garden. On my ﬁrst evening I went on deck to take the air- suddenly in the distance I heard the sound of a craft approaching at speed. Out of the night mist came a heavily armed – Uzi’s

‘R’ Us - patrol boat with a real deal Rambo. It started circling and a searchlight came on, it was like A Night At The London Palladium. The bullhorn boomed “Listen carefully – this is an order play Mouldy Old Dough for my ﬁancée Rebecca in Tel Aviv, I miss her.” Now, with the greatest respect to Rebecca & the group Lieutenant Pigeon, the tune doesn’t work on any lovelorn level, but I’m no hero so I played the accursed thing 20 times on the spin. However did my Cupid capers precipitate a crisis that pushed us a step closer to World War 3? This all happened October 5th 1973. The next day a coalition of Arab States led by Egypt & Syria attacked Israel starting the Yom Kippur War. My theory is the record is so annoying it would drive even a drippy hippy, never mind a demonic despot, to a violent reaction. It’s all down to the really irritating ragtime honky tonk piano player - Ladies & Gentlemen I give you all the way from

Turkey, courgetti & feta burgers Turkey mince, spiralized courgette, feta and mint give these burgers a healthier profile. Serve with a peppery rocket and sweet cherry tomato salad

Ingredients 500g lean turkey mince 100g feta, crumbled 1 large courgette (about 200g), ends trimmed, halved widthways and spiralized into thin noodles 2 garlic cloves, crushed Â˝ small pack mint, leaves picked and chopped Â˝ tsp chilli flakes 1 tsp sumac zest and juice of 1 lemon (save the juice for the salad) 1 large egg, beaten 1 tsp olive oil For the tomato salad 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil 110g bag of rocket salad 250g pack cherry tomatoes, halved Method Mix all of the ingredients for the turkey burgers, bar the olive oil, together in a large bowl. Season with a generous amount of black pepper and a little salt (you wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t need a lot because of the feta). Shape into 4 burgers, the mixture will be quite sticky so cover and chill in the fridge for 15 mins or until needed to firm up a little. At this point the burgers can also be frozen. Preheat the grill to its highest setting then brush the burgers on both sides with the olive oil. Transfer the burgers to a non-stick baking tray and cook for 8-10 mins on each side, until cooked through and golden brown. While the burgers are cooking, mix together the olive oil, lemon juice and some seasoning. Add the rocket and tomatoes to a large salad bowl, add half the dressing and toss well to combine. Serve alongside the turkey burgers and with the extra dressing on the side.

Great idea, or just blowing smoke? Back in 2011, new public smoking laws were introduced in Spain. It finally meant an end to ALL tobacco smoking in bars, cafes, and indeed ALL ‘enclosed’ public areas.However, you may have recently spotted a new, smug breed of folks puffing away openly in indoor public spaces, on what appears to be a toy cigarette. What are they up to? What do they know that the rest of us don’t? What they’re actually using is an electronic cigarette, or ‘e-cig’. Themodern e-cig deliversREAL nicotine to the user in a vapour-mist form which looks, feels and behaves very much like real smoke. Nicotine is not known to be harmful or carcinogenic when separated from tobacco, the burning process, and the other 4,000+ chemicals which make up a traditional tobacco cigarette – it’s more on a par with a shot of caffeine, according to many doctors. E-cigsdon’t need lighters or ashtrays, they don’t burn down or go out, and they’re a much cheaper and healthier low-risk alternative to cigarette smoking;they also restorelost freedom and personal rights by allowing users

to ‘smoke’ in places where tobacco is normally banned. So what’s in an e-cig, and how do they work? Modern e-cigs come in 2 parts – a rechargeable battery, and a liquid nicotine cartridge. The contents of the cartridge are gently heated, turning it into a vapour mist that can be inhaled at the mouthpiece. This is usually achieved using propylene glycol (PG), a safe, inert and common vapourising mixture found in many foods and medical treatments such as asthma inhalants, amongst others.

The user exhales a visible cloud of water vapour which lookslike smoke, but which disappears within seconds. There’s no lingering smell from a good e-cig, and no second-hand smoke. The 4 basic ingredients found in most e-cigs are liquid nicotine, propylene glycol, water, and flavouring. That’s it! Nicotine cartridgesare the necessary disposables which you buy instead of cigarettes. Depending on your brand, cartridges contain the equivalent of between 5 - 30 traditional cigarettes each, making themcheaper than cigarettes. E-cigs are not a toy, nor are they officially

approved as a device to help you quit smoking. They’re designed as a healthier replacement or substitute to tobacco. It must be stressed that nicotine is addictive, and should not be used by under 18s, non-smokers, or women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. The case of The Oregon Scientiﬁc Weather Station THIS WEEK the Inspector is reining in The Oregon Scientiﬁc Full Wireless Weather Station.

The Oregon Scientiﬁc Weather Station offers a wide range of weather information in a compact and convenient design. The base station is located indoors, and displays all of the information gathered wirelessly from the indoor and outdoor mounted sensors on the large LCD display. The display gives current readings for indoor and outdoor temperature in °C or °F, checked every 102 seconds. Relative humidity, both inside and out, is also sampled at the same rate. There is a barometric pressure measurement, with a graph of the last 24 hours. Continuing outside, the unit also monitors wind-speed, direction and chill, UV index and rainfall. So there is going to be no problem in deciding whether you are to be soaked or fried. Now to the best, and likely to be most contentious bit – the forecasting function. This allegedly works 12-24 hours in advance and works within a 19-31 mile radius. The unit displays the predicted forecast as a symbol on the display – sunny, cloudy, rain, tsunami or relevant mixes. Present Subjunctive (3) ¡Hola, espero que estéis muy bien! This of course means “Hello, I hope you are well”. Such a simple everyday phrase that we use at the beginnings of letters and e-mails as a matter of courtesy. And yet, look at the sentence again. I hope you “are” well. I have written the word “estéis” for “are”. This comes from the verb “estar” which is the verb “to be” used to express state or condition, in other words “how” someone is. You may also know enough about verb endings to recognize that I have used the “second person plural” form: that is the form which is used to address more than one person in a familiar way. (That is because I hope that more than one person is reading this article or at least got as far as the first line!) However, there’s something odd here. The verb “estar” is an “-ar” verb, so in its usual present tense endings are “o, -as, -a, -amos, -áis, -an”. Why then do we have the ending “-éis” substituting an “e” for an “a”? (I know you

already know the answer, but I like to draw things out and create a bit of drama. I don’t have a very exciting life.) So, yes! We are in the lookingglass world of the present subjunctive, where everything is hypothetical and endings get swapped over. I am using the subjunctive here because I am expressing my hope that you are well, without knowing whether you are or not. Here is the verb “estar” in the present subjunctive: Esté estés esté

Now let’s look at another –ar verb. Apart from “dar” which I mentioned last week, the rest are all regular, unlike “estar” which has this strange characteristic accented ending. Let’s take: “pasar” for example. It goes like this: pase

pases paséis pase pasen And here’s a sentence with it in: “Dile a Juan que pase” which means “Tell Juan to come in”. Notice in Spanish we are saying something like “Tell Juan that he might come in”. This is a rather wooden translation but it does capture the hypothetical nature of the subjunctive form and of the situation. Just because I’ve told you to tell Juan to come in, doesn’t mean that he is actually going to. In this situation we could also address Juan directly with the familiar order “pasa” (Come in!), or if we wished to stand a little more on ceremony, we could use the formal (usted) command “pase” (Come in!) As you can see, this polite form is actually subjunctive which should also give you a sense of the inherent politeness of the word “pase”. It invites you to come in, in a tentative and respectful way. It is quite untranslatable – “That you may come in” is

the best I can do, but really it’s the equivalent of our polite: “Do come in” or “please come in”. I hope you are bearing with me as this is not very easy to explain, but it is such a key aspect of the Spanish language. As you can see, we can move from direct certainty to tentative speculation with the switch of a single letter.

More Improvements to be Implemented We reported recently on a range of measures announced by the DGT which aim to improve road safety and reduce casualties and fatalities. We also said that we would return to the subject as there are other measures also being taken to change the way traffic flows. These measures include the possibility of creating lanes where “car share” vehicles can be added to the municipal register in Madrid, so that they can join buses and taxis in using certain priority lanes, plus, priority lanes for vehicles with low or zero emissions could be created, coinciding with them now displaying a distinctive sticker which notes their eco-friendliness. In particular, badges B and C would take priority over more polluting vehicles. Road-based sporting events have also come under the spotlight for 2017. No longer would it be automatic that a sporting event would force roads to close, now each one would have to be looked at to assess the impact on other road users who might want to travel on

the route during their normal course of action. The same applies for marches that require roads to be closed. This would only be done and the marches allowed if the impact was not detrimental to the “rest of the road users”. Similar restrictions will be considered in the case of events that might be damaging or disturbing to the environment, with special care having to be taken to minimise damage before authority is given. Weather conditions may play a greater role in traffic management this year. In cases where road safety might be compromised by heavy fog, strong winds, snow, torrential rains or other phenomena, certain types of vehicles may be restricted to ensure traffic safety. Alfaz Fantasy Football League There was 1 Monday Night game and seven 5th Round F.A.Cup Ties which involved Premier League Teams which produced for the Alfaz Fantasy Football League 17 goals(lowest so far this Season,7 clean sheets,15 yellow cards(another record low for the Season) and 1 red card which was Millwall’s Cooper. CD Montesinos’s promotion hopes could be boosted this week - if the Valencia Football Association return the six points they deducted from the Segunda Regional Grupo 16 club this season for allegedly playing an unregistered player - writes ANDREW ATKINSON. The Los Montesinos, Alicante based outfit kept their promotion bid on track with a 2-0 win against FB Redovan B - in a weekend which saw the top four teams return victories - with only three points separating top and fourth place. CD Benijofar gained a 2-1 home win against Atl. Orihuela to maintain top spot on 32 points, ahead of Callosa Dep. B (30 points) who gained an impressive 3-0 away win at Grupo Caliche. Third placed CD Murada (30 points) defeated RP Orihuela 2-1. Fourth placed CD Montesinos have 29 points. CD Montesinos coach Carlos Perez has Brazilian striker Vazquinho available for selection this weekend (February 26) away at Atl. Orihuela having served a two match suspension for dissent. Maccan could also be set to return to the fold following injury. With Callosa Dep.
