ART AND CULTURE India is a country with infinite and diverse mixture of traditional, art and culture. The fascinating nation is so enticing where the exotic monuments and enchanting destinations speak volumes about the art and culture of Indian people. India is home to many of the finest cultural symbols of the world which includes temples, churches, mosques, forts, performing arts, classical dances, sculptures, paintings, architecture, literature etc.

7 The concept behind choosing lemniscate is that an artist has diverse ideas and his creativity to create approaches is infinity. The idea of choosing lemniscate as my concept is to show the beauty of endless culture and invite art. My form will be such designed that the plan and facade will be highly influenced from the symbol. WHAT? I n a l g e b r a i c g e o m e t r y, a lemniscate is any of several figure-eight or ∞-shaped curves.
 The word comes from the Latin "lēmniscātus" meaning "decorated with ribbons”. In general, infinity is symbolised by the lemniscate (∞). Infinity is the quality or state of endlessness or having no limits in terms of time, space, or other quantity.

WHY?

HOW?

lemniscate (∞) is an endless symbol. It represents the endless cycles of life in creation as continuously flowing “in and out” from source itself. Every drawing of the symbol is an era in itself, and there are infinite “amounts” of eras, as creation is infinite.

The nature of lemniscate lies in its multidimensional nature, and this nature reveals itself to us in layers of awareness. So this symbol is multidimensional in nature just like everything else in its source nature. The middle point represents the interlocking point or the merging point consciousness where the two “parallel” or the “opposite” balance each other out.

MAIN CENTER The plan and circulation of the main center is based on the concept of infinity curve (LEMNISCATE). This curve is a continuous path on which if we walk we will get to the other side of the loop without even knowing. This signifies the smooth transition of the circulation as well as the infinite future in we keep on walking.

E LEARNING CENTER The E Learning Centre has been designed in a very unique way that it has a perfect viewing angle which was achieved by playing with different levels while planning the same.


OAT The OAT is designed in such a way that it goes both ways upside and downside to cater the needs of the students using it and providing them with ample place to sit. It gets its unique appeal from the water body surrounding it. People can enjoy the view of the water surrounding the OAT with ease while sitting inside it.

The basic thought before designing the building was to create a suitable environment for maximum interaction between the students and teaching staff. To achieve the desired a central outdoor atrium was designed, which results into a surrounding where education, working and relaxation come together.

For the basis of the building, a circular shape was chosen because of the favourable ratio of surface area relative to the area of the facade. The self supporting design allows non load bearing interior walls to be placed as desired. Allowing greater flexibility in designing the interior spaces.

Semi open floor plans allow the easy flow of natural air circulation and natural lighting throughout.

The circular structure withstands wind loads better than a square or rectangle. Because the wind hits a smaller portion of the wall surface and then flows around the structure, a round building typically withstands higher wind forces. The aerodynamic shape allows winds to move around a round building rather than developing destructive high and low air pressure areas that occur with flat walls.

Acoustically, due to circular planning the inside sounds of music and conversation flows around the space to fill all "corners". Outside sounds move easily around the building rather than travelling a long distance.

ARCHITECTURE SCHOOL The Architectural School has been designed in the way to increase the interaction between the students as all the aspiring architects require an impressive communication skillset. The cantilevers have been placed strategically on each floor to help in improving the communication between the students. All the labs and workshops are placed on the ground floor to ease the access..

The Contoured space is designed as a leisure space for the students. After a very hectic schedule of the whole day a future architect needs a place to relax his mind and freshen up a bit, therefore this particular space has been designed for the same purpose. This space also works as a smoking space for the students. It will be the perfect place for all the students to hangout and interact with each other and spend some quality time with each other.

Central Outdoor Atrium consists of pits for performing group discussions between the students, walkways all over the atrium in concentric circles to provide its unique aesthetic appeal that it has, the water body at the epicentre of the atrium to provide a sense of calmness and serendipity with a large pole with the college symbol at the top of it which spreads a symbol of oneness and togetherness amongst the students. This atrium at times can also be used as space for holding up events and parties for the college.

THE DESIGN “Critical Regionalism brings to our senses all the range of human perceptions.”

CRITICAL REGIONALISM Critical Regionalism is an approach to encounter the lack of placelessness and lack of identity of International style, but also rejects the ornamentation approach of Postmodernism. Critical Regionalism is not just to replicate vernacular architecture or traditional architecture but it seeks answer through traditional or vernacular architecture in modern context. Critical regionalism is not only regionalism but it is an progressive approach to seek answers from global and local language of architecture.

CONTEXT Charles correa, through his architecture made us experience space, the lyrical qualities of light and shade, the beauty that can be found in humble materials, the power of colour, and the joy of woven narratives in space. Perhaps more than anything else, however, it was his belief in the notion that architecture can shape society which ensures the continued relevance of his work. “At it’s most vital, architecture is an agent of change,” Correa once wrote. In an era dominated by the “starchitects” and their iconic structures, architecture, Correa claimed, cannot be mere “adjectives and exclamation marks.” Cities need grammar. In today’s media-savvy world, Correa stayed away from imagery and chose instead to focus on intelligent organisation and use of space.

APPROACH Charles Correa’s attitude towards the “critical regionalism” is very natural; he effortlessly creates a built environment which reflects the traditional as well modern element together in much unified way.. The approach to critical regionalism in this project can be defined in site planning principles, climatic consideration, cultural context, appropriate use of local building materials. It is not just to replicate vernacular architecture or traditional architecture but it seeks answer through traditional or vernacular architecture in modern context.The approach to site planning is unique, the concept of project is deriving in response to the site context. The access and approach to building is in a very interesting way and all is done with intention to achieve the regionalism.

CONCEPT STATEMENT

DESIGN STATEMENT

The Golden Ratio seems to get its name from the Golden Rectangle, a rectangle whose sides are in the proportion of the Golden Ratio. The theory of the Golden Rectangle is an aesthetic one, that the ratio is an aesthetically pleasing one and so can be found spontaneously or deliberately turning up in a great deal of art. Thus, for instance, the front of the Parthenon can be comfortably framed with a Golden Rectangle. The golden ratio and the fibonacci sequence are indeed connected as the closed form expression for the fibonacci sequence involves the golden ratio.If you divide a number of the fibonacci sequence by the previous number in the sequence you get something that increasingly approximates the golden ratio as it approaches infinity.

The Sculpture being something introduced in the boundary line itself, works exactly on the contrary to its meaning which now helped in merging two different energies from architecture and engineering.

The area chosen is near the famous landmark of Meerut, The Ghanta Ghar or The Clock Tower. Despite of having a strong historical significance and a major area for trade and commerce, it has severe problems that needs to be dealt with.

22 WHY MEERUT ? Meerut is an Urban Agglomeration as per census 2011 with a population of 1.3 million. Meerut city, the head quarter of Meerut District, situated 70 km from Delhi, has been a place of historical, cultural and administrative importance since the time immemorial. Meerut is a city in history, a city of drains or a city with future. The historical background of the city has always been its USP. Meerut’s advantageous geographical location nearness to the National capital and abundant productive productive rich fertile land form the basis of a strong economical growth for the city. It is the most largest manufacturer of Musical Instruments in the country and is also one of the largest suppliers sports goods. There are several large scale industries located in Meerut. Moreover, Meerut has a strong culture where people of different communities live in harmony. Meerut is the city known for various sort of religious people living together in a community sharing their lives


ABOUT THE BUILDING The plan of Devanagari inter college is a courtyard planning which has benefitted the school building since its birth the list of advantages is not a short one and hence, it has enhanced the building and has made it very strong and aesthetically pleasing. The plan is also partly symmetrical which enhances its functionality and the form of the building. The centre portion of the plan is focusing on the school’s major function i.e. the offices of the higher authorities which centralises it and gives an ease of access to this part. The right and the left part of the school is divided on the base of the grades. The library is given on to the left which is isolated from the major happenings of the building given it rather more closest space to it. Since the plan is very simple and organised it has made it rather a very strong site. the central planning was inspired by the library building of university of Cambridge thus has been majorly focused on the administrative area for ease of access.

WHY VOCATIONAL SCHOOL ? WHY REIN BASERA (NIGHT SHELTER) ? A shelter for the roadside crowd is beneficial because it protects the folks from the variation of weather conditions or nature of calamities and reduces the threat of roadside mishappenings.

WHY ECO - TOILETS ? • The chosen structure lacked any sanitation facility. • Toilets are provided in a separate building inside the complex but far from the main building. • Moreover, lack of public sanitation facility in the vicinity led to the proposal of an eco-toilet.

DESIGN INTERVENTION Universal furniture to accommodate the students of vocational school without disrupting the primary function of Middle school.

WHY MOTIVATIONAL SCHOOL ? The growing city of Meerut has a huge population which is sitting idle and jobless due to low self esteem as well as lack of moral support. Thus, to enhance and boost their self esteem and for the betterment of the society, a need for such a school arose. DESIGN INTERVENTION Provision of steps and stage in multi-purpose hall would enhance the function of the middle school along with providing a platform for yoga and meditation as well as Motivational school.

WHY YOGA AND MEDITATION ? Yoga and meditation are such form of sciences, which helps in purification of soul and spirit. It is beneficial for overall development of human body. This improves immunity and maintain a healthy balance.

WHY LANDSCAPE ? Landscape is a very prominent part of every living building as well as the people using it. The main motive to design this area is to enhance the site with a different touch of landscaping using various elements to evolve something new. This landscape would bind all the other proposed functions together.

The door marks the primary entrance of all the rooms in the building.The door has a rich multi- coloured transom that allows tinted light to enter the room.

The door marks the secondary entrance of all the rooms in the building. A traditional wooden door without any transom.

Dome features Islamic form of architecture. The extensions of the building is characterised by an extensive blend of indoislamic architecture style with a slight touch of colonial architecture in its columns.

The 3 layers of bricks running along the entire length of facade are in different orders, the topmost layer been extruded the most.

The load of the entire structure is transferred through the slab to the semi - circular vaults which are in turn connected to load bearing walls of the building. These walls transfer the carried load to sub - soil.

The ventilators had tapered walls towards the inner side to ensure direct sunlight in the room without bouncing.

Multi - foiled arches towards the exterior facade and simple semi - circular had bearing arches towards the inner corridors and classrooms.

SITE : SONIPAT INTENT : THE COMPETITION WAS ABOUT, REPRESENTATION OF A CITY AND ITS ARCHITECTURAL FORM IN ITS MOST WAY OF REINTERPRETATION. THIS WAS AN OPEN ENDED EXERCISE FOR A WIDE SPECTRUM OF IDEATIONS AND TO DEVELOP NEW WAYS OF IMAGINATION OF THE CITY/ ITS PLANNING AND ITS FORM.

The city so constructive, the city bit destructive, the city is the shelter. The city in light, the city in dark, the city fading to shadows. The city had past; the city has future, the city lives in present."

THEME The theme, the idea that describes or portrays a particular thing as a whole. The theme is the time which takes the ideology to a new dimension. The time which is introduced as the fourth dimension. The time is the dimension that has joined the multiple universes. The time is the only element which is the fastest entity and the slowest too based upon the situations. Time, the fastest thing alive, and it is an intangible aspect which cannot be controlled by time itself. Time is the controlling machine, which holds the life or death, progression or regression, present or future. The time has seen every single phase of the city. It had a vision of the past, being the present keeping a vision of the future. It is only witness of all the happenings within a place. The idea is not just keeping time as an element but creating a situation that achieves the theory of timelessness, developing the situation where time does not act as a barrier. The idea is not beating time, but getting the clock back, bringing those days back.

“ Man is a gaming animal. He must always be trying to get the better in something or - other . “ CHARLES LAMB Why Video Games and Architecture Need Each Other ? As game designers turn to architects to develop their worlds, the surprisingly historic relationship between architecture and computer games is thrown into relief, full of unexplored potential. Architecture, mother of all the arts, and video gaming, the media-mocked, juvenile time-waster – despite their polarised public status the two would seem destined to work together. Much like architecture, video gaming’s power is in its ability to draw together countless other, well-established art forms; perfecting this amalgamation and its applications is where its own status as art lies.

XTREME ARENA XTREME ARENA was a classroom of our college specially redesigned for architectural student’s “GREEN AND GREEDY” gaming. The materials used were carefully chosen to change the whole persona and vibe of the room. Neon lights and loud murals were used on the walls to subconsciously unleash the beast inside the gamers The room was fully equipped with all the high spec laptops and other gaming gears to ease the gamers with their gameplay. The purpose of designing such an enthralling place was to inculcate in students the importance of recreation and give it a whole new dimension altogether, in terms of experience as well as aesthetics

CONCEPT Being the students of architecture, the use of laptops is imperative nowadays, which must not only be done for the sake of work but also for recreation. The monotonous lifestyle of the students within a classroom keeps them deprived of a joyous and exuberant environment. therefore, the focus of this design was to provide them with a cheerful interactive space which uplifts their working spirits and keeps them on track.

MISCELLANEOUS LBC WORKSHOP

Under this programme launched by LAURIE BAKER CENTER FOR HABITAT STUDIES, architecture students from different colleges were exposed to alternatives in architecture that are cost effective, affordable, environment friendly and aesthetically appealing building construction techniques along with topics habitat studies. The programme was a combination of lecture session, hands on training, field visits and interactive sessions.The cost effective construction alternatives included use of Mangalore tiles, bamboo and mud wall construction which were practically demonstrated and practiced on the field.
