A Village, Revived ESMÉ IS RESTORING THE GLORY OF ESPAÑOLA WAY’S ARTISTIC HEYDAY More than a hotel, Esmé is a portal to another world, a window into the halcyon days of hustlers that played ‘em as they laid, artists that dared to break the mold, and It girls that left their beauty mark on the styles of the times. The Village is a multi-faceted gem alongside the buzz of Española Way, yet hidden among hushed historic paseos, and extends to the character-rich Casa Matanza. With a nod to the Spanish-Mediterranean influence on Esmé’s architecture, the thrilling tastes of Spain dance with the magically diverse Latin flavors of Miami, beckoning the old country’s lust for life and deliciously slower pace. Originally The Clay Hotel, Esmé the crown jewel of Miami Beach sparkles like she was always meant to.

Española Way & The Clay Originally the Clay Hotel, Esmé’s walls are textured with the memories of a long and colorful past. Almost 100 years ago, enterprising visionaries set on realizing a “scenographic...primer on the architectural history of the Mediterranean region” for world travelers who felt that “Miami Beach lacked an area with a creative atmosphere for artists”. Española Way was, in all ways, destined to be distinct, but the Clay gave guests their most storied stays and a haven for scheming conmen hiding out along the ports. And though the times may have changed, Esmé Miami Beach was designed to reimagine this 100 years of history with as much artistry as the original guests sought... and as much aura as the original property provided. As today’s creative class seeks out new and niche modes of memory-making, and their nouveaubohemian sensibilities disrupt old standards in hospitality, Esmé—as a hotel, village, and brand—stands out in choice for how it stands up for originality. To visit is to not just be steps away from the whitesands of Miami Beach, or the charismatic corridors, local vendors, and dining establishments of Española Way, or even the seasonal attractions of Art Basel and the South Beach Wine & Food Festival, it’s to also step away from time itself.

EXPLORING THE DESERT VOICE

L

ouise Brooks, OUR ESMÉ MUSE

An embodiment of the grandeur and grit of the 1920s; a Renaissance woman who was of and before her time; a real and artistic ‘influencer’ who leveraged media to climb the social ladder. She moved amongst artists and actors, grifters and gangsters alike, and managed to embody it all. She is an historial icon, whose voice — whether real or imagined—still inspires a textured sense of hospitality and adventure, femininity and confidence. Sometimes a Stylish Socialite... Sometimes an Eccentric Collaborator... Sometimes a Cultured Bohemian... ...AND ALWAYS A GOOD TIME.

TEAM SPOTLIGHT

Meet Sanja!

Sanja has been an integral part of the Esme family since August 2021, joining the team just in time for the grand opening. Reflecting on the journey, it's evident that her connection to this project runs deep. Originating from Serbia, Sanja brings a touch of Balkan warmth to her role. With a light-hearted correction, she emphasizes, "Not Siberia, but Serbia," proudly carrying the cultural legacy of her homeland, embodying the spirits of luminaries such as Nikola Tesla and Novak Djokovic. Equipped with a degree in Philology, Sanja's transition into the realm of hospitality was spurred by her passion for languages. Her encounters with boutique hotels during European travels shaped her affinity for Operations, where the dynamic nature of each day and the opportunity to lead and nurture her team became the pulse of her professional journey. While Sanja finds fulfillment in ensuring guests experience the utmost from the moment they enter Esme, her true passion lies in orchestrating the transformation of a guest's experience. She recounts a tale of a couple whose journey to Esme faced unexpected hurdles. Sanja's team, embodying the spirit of hospitality, seamlessly turned their challenges into a celebration of life, creating a bond that transcended the customary hotel stay. Beyond her responsibilities, Sanja values her moments of reprieve. Immersing herself in literature, mastering new languages, and savoring Miami's breathtaking sunsets are her chosen avenues for relaxation. Meeting fellow expats and delving into diverse cultures form the tapestry of experiences that enrich her soul. Having traversed various cities in the US and Europe, Sanja unequivocally declares Miami as unparalleled. The city's unique blend of relaxation and inspiration motivates her daily, compelling her to strive for the best version of herself. In her own words, "The world is simply too short not to live in a place that makes you feel good." Miami, with its sun-drenched energy, has become Sanja's sanctuary—a place that not only elevates her spirit but also urges her to aspire to greatness. At Esme, she goes beyond the title of Front Office Manager. Sanja creates memorable experiences that linger in the hearts of those fortunate enough to cross her path at Esme Miami Beach.

BEACHES & BEYOND From the bustling busy streets of South Beach, to the quieter neighborhood beaches of Key Biscayne. Miami has you covered for each and every type of beach experience you are searching for! Here are some of our favorite beaches to explore with the family & even with Fido!

South Beach: South Beach is perhaps the most famous beach in Miami. It's located in the heart of the Art Deco Historic District and offers white sand, turquoise waters, and a lively atmosphere. This beach is known for its colorful lifeguard stands and is a popular spot for people-watching and water sports. Miami Beach: Miami Beach, often referred to as Mid Beach, is a more relaxed and family-friendly option compared to South Beach. It features a wide sandy shore, a picturesque boardwalk, and a range of water activities. The area is dotted with luxury resorts and hotels. Crandon Park Beach: Located on Key Biscayne, Crandon Park Beach is a serene and natural oasis. It offers a two-mile stretch of sandy coastline, picnic areas, and lush vegetation. The shallow waters are perfect for swimming, and the park also features a family-friendly amusement center and a nature center. Haulover Beach Park: Haulover Beach Park is renowned for its clothing-optional section, making it a popular destination for naturists. However, it also has a family-friendly section with soft sands, clear waters, and a marina for fishing and boating. The beach is set within a beautiful park with various amenities. Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park: Located on the southern tip of Key Biscayne, Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park is home to the historic Cape Florida Lighthouse. The beach here is relatively quiet and offers a more natural setting with lovely views of the Atlantic Ocean. Visitors can explore nature trails and enjoy a picnic in the park. DOG FRIENDLY: Haulover Dog Beach is a great option where your dogs can be completely off leash and enjoy the sand & sun! Check google for opening hours as dog hours are limited. Key Biscayne Dog Beach is a local smaller beach strip where pups can also play off leash.

Meet Shawn Kolodny, a contemporary artist with a dual base in the vibrant cities of Miami and New York. Formerly an entrepreneur, investor, and advisor, Kolodny has seamlessly transitioned into a career spanning over 15 years, dedicated to crafting contemporary art and expansive installations. At the core of Kolodny's artistic expression lies his unique choice of medium—spheres. These spherical creations serve as captivating mirrors reflecting the world around them, beckoning viewers to simultaneously exist within and outside their shimmering boundaries.

Kolodny's art transcends conventional limits, forging a profound connection with the natural world, as spheres emerge as the sole organic and perfectly geometric shapes that envelop our surroundings. His large-scale masterpieces are more than mere visual spectacles; they offer an immersive experience, inviting viewers to traverse and interact with the artwork, effectively becoming integral components of the creative narrative. Notable among his collaborations are projects with Four Seasons, BMF, the Something In The Water Festival & another upcoming project with House of Creed.

Shawn KOLODNY FEATURED ARTIST KOLODNY.ART @KOLODNYART

We spoke to Kolodny about his his ongoing partnership with Creed. After creating sculptural installations for their holiday window displays in over 30 locations worldwide, he has now been commissioned to create a piece for public display on Miami’s own Española Way. Drawing inspiration from Creed’s iconic fragrance bottle, Kolodny has created immersive installations for store visitors globally. “ My artwork’s innate reflective qualities naturally complement the sheer class of Creed. To enhance the aesthetic connection, I carefully orchestrate my designs around the contours of the iconic bottle. By incorporating both gold and silver spheres, I was able to define and elevate the silhouette of the bottle in a unique manner. However, the true essence of this display lies in its intentional interplay of form and emptiness. A meticulously arranged constellation of spheres defines the Creed bottle in negative space. This design choice beckons the viewer into a captivating dance of perception, urging them to recognize the allure in both the tangible spheres and the intangible void they create.” This December, in collaboration with the City of Miami Beach, The House of Creed, and Esmé Miami Beach, Kolodny is set to unveil a striking, large-scale public sculpture gracing Española Way near Miami Beach. This dynamic sculpture is a testament to the perpetual dynamism and fluidity of our natural world, capturing the essence of movement and vibrancy. Positioned strategically, it beckons viewers to immerse themselves in the art, becoming an integral part of the spectacle amid their own reflections. Adding a sensory layer to the experience, the public sculpture will be scented by The House of Creed, enhancing the overall ambiance and offering a multi-dimensional encounter with artistry. Miami Art Week attendees are in for a treat as Kolodny's collaboration with the city, The House of Creed, and the Esmé Miami Beach Hotel converges to create a truly immersive and sensorial artistic experience.

ART TALK with Julianna Vezzetti

We had the pleasure of sitting down with Julianna Vezzetti, art advisor, liaison, co-founder of ‘Good to Know’, and founder of ‘SENDNUDES’. We delved into experiencing art beyond the white cube, the significance of nurturing all facets of an artist, and Good to Know’s upcoming project at Café Versailles.

A view of the GTK’s second site of ‘A Subtropical Affair” at LOW RES art space.

In addition to her work with Good to Know, Julianna Vezzetti champions artists through her independent platform, "SENDNUDES," established in 2022. This initiative targets the younger buyer market, offering artworks under 10k to encourage the next generation of collectors “while regressing the social stigma of ageism within the buyers market.” By utilizing strategic email and WhatsAPP send-outs, Vezzetti provides an unconventional yet accessible entry point into the art world. Watch out for an upcoming SENDNUDES exhibition in 2024. Understanding the challenges artists face in balancing artistic expression with commercial opportunities, she actively works to bridge this gap. In an era marked by contrived partnerships, Vezzetti helps artists establish sincere collaborations not only with the spaces they exhibit in but also with In the dynamic realm of contemporary art, Julianna Vezzetti is quietly reshaping how artists connect with their craft and the opportunities it presents. THE TEAM BEHIND LOST BOY! A restaurant on Española Way making good on the boulevard’s name. Adjacent to Esmé Miami Beach Hotel, Tropezón is a charming, Andalusian-inspired spot boasting a generous list of Spanish wines, sherries and gincentric cocktails. Owners Randy Alonso Chris Hudnall, who are also behind downtown’s popular Americana bar Lost Boy Dry Goods, traveled throughout Spain to gain insight into daily life and tapas culture for the concept. They drew inspiration from laid-back village bars, combining the old-world architecture they encountered with their preferred Western aesthetic to create a saloon-type feel. “The idea was to create a playful space with a combination of Western and Spanish touches that are random but intriguing at the same time,” says Alonso. Vintage furnishings and Alonso’s own collection of memorabilia strewn about combine to present a nostalgic view of Spain.

Short of closing for siesta, Tropezón endeavors to stay true to an Andalusian restaurant with its food and drink offerings. The menu packs in all of the classics you’d expect from a tapas bar, including tortilla Española, gambas al ajillo, gazpacho, patatas brava and tablas de jamón Ibérico. All, of course, meant for sharing. Larger plates take more artistic liberty, such as the cowboy ribeye seasoned with a five-spice coffee rub. The country’s signature cocktail, the gin tonic, is front and center with more than 20 different gin infusions, from teas and fruits to cured meats. Think savory gin martinis, colorful g&ts like the blue matcha yuzu and local strawberry. Sherry and vermouth are also widely available for those who prefer to indulge in Spain’s classic fortified wines. Fancy a trip to the Iberian peninsula? Tropezón is now open at 512 Española Way, serving dinner nightly.

MICHELIN GUIDE MIAMI 2023

From vibrant French cuisine with hints of Asian flavors to scintillating Mediterranean cuisine with hyper-local ingredients, below is the full list of MICHELIN Guide distinctions in Miami. 1) L 'Atelier de Joël Robuchon Miami Two Stars - Cuisine: French

5) Cote Miami One Star - Cuisine: Korean

9) Los Félix One Star - Cuisine: Mexican

The menu offers both tasting portions and large plates; but go with the seasonal prix fixe. The bread basket is a lovely opener, arriving in advance of such thrilling bites as a seared sea scallop with toasted spices. Tuna sashimi in a warm vinaigrette of brown butter, mustard and makrut lime dazzles, while artichokes, housed underneath a glass dome and floating in a chickpea and turmeric "cappuccino," delight. Finally, the aptly named le chocolat sensation is a thrill with its balance of textures and tastes.

Owner Simon Kim and his team know what they're doing in this highly stylized Korean steakhouse, which almost feels like a temple to beautifully marbled and aged beef, much of it on display in a nearby room. Just as you would find at the original location in New York City, top-quality ingredients, astutely seasoned dishes and engaging servers make for a seamless experience.

This is highly creative Mexican cooking that sends guests on a gustatory trip—at the hands of servers who are armed with ample information about the provenance of each ingredient. Recent highlights have included hearty pork cheek carnitas with a myriad of salsas; snapper crudo topped with shavings of jicama and avocado aïoli; and grilled octopus with beetroot mole.

6) Le Jardinier Miami One Star - Cuisine: French

10) Stubborn Seed One Star - Cuisine: Contemporary

The menu is a study of vibrant tastes and smart compositions that pack big flavor minus the heaviness. Highlights include a wonderfully smooth summer gazpacho with avocado; tortellini with chanterelles and hazelnuts; as well as seared Hudson Valley foie gras with cherry.

Chef Jeremy Ford brings the heat, and his ambitious and brashly creative cooking is best enjoyed by way of the tasting menu.

2) Tambourine Room by Tristan Brandt One Star - Cuisine: Contemporary

Inside the Carillon Miami Wellness Resort on a rather calm stretch of Collins Avenue, find this ambitious dining bijou helmed by Chef Tristan Brandt and his trusted lieutenant Timo Steubing. The duo delivers a colorful, multicourse tasting grounded in French cuisine with notable Asian inspiration. 3) Ariete One Star - Cuisine: Contemporary

First-timers should aim for the tasting menu, as it's the surest way to experience the chef’s talent for creative combinations and excellent sauce work. Lush with greenery, this restaurant immediately welcomes with a menu that weaves together new American and classic French influences to dazzling effect. 4) Boia De One Star - Cuisine: Contemporary

Sandwiched between a laundromat and a medical center in a Buena Vista shopping center, the neon-pink exclamation mark that glows above the front door is impossible to miss. Surprising is certainly an apt descriptor for Chefs Luciana Giangrandi and Alex Meyer’s destination. Servers say the food is Italian, but is it really?

7) Elcielo Miami One Star - Cuisine: Colombian

The menu offers diners a taste of traditional Colombian cuisine with a modern take. Presentations are dramatic, from the tableside "chocotherapy" to the "Tree of Life" bread service. Tasting menu favorites have included a silken corn purée poured over garam masala-sprinkled popcorn and curds of queso fresco; as well as local, seared-to-a-crisp grouper plated with a salsa criolla-dressed tamal. 8) Hiden One Star - Cuisine: Japanese

11) The Den at Azabu Miami Beach One Star - Cuisine: Japanese

Fish flown in a few times a week is treated and dressed minimally, often with just a single brush of nikiri. Recent highlights have included thinly sliced octopus dotted with a sunny orange miso as well as soymarinated akami nigiri. 12) The Surf Club Restaurant One Star - Cuisine: American

Sauces are what this team does best, starting with the scallop crudo with buttermilk-basil dressing; followed by the brilliantly reimagined Maine lobster thermidor with sauce Américaine; and finishing with the coconut chiffon cake with lime-flecked crème anglaise.

Beyond the hustle and bustle, Chef Seijun Okano offers a mature, finely tuned omakase for the fortunate few seated at his counter. Fish flown in multiple times a week from Japan are handled with precision, sliced carefully and pressed into lush, vinegar-tinged rice that he makes at the start.

MEET OUR INTERIOR DESIGNER

Esmé and Casa Matanza, have brought new energy to South Beach since opening on the historic Española Way. Designed by Jessie Schuster, our village comprises of eight buildings on the same street, connected by our inner paseos and tunnel. A display of Jewel-toned interiors and beautiful furniture combine to make our property a one of a kind unique experience.

Her team offers a wealth of experience in design as well as interior decorating, project management, and procurement. Hailing from Boston, Massachusetts, Jessica Schuster is the founder and president of Jessica Schuster Design, which specializes in both residential and commercial spaces. Jessica received her B.S. in Communications from New York University and her Associate’s degree in Interior and Architectural Studies at The Parsons School of Design. Prior to launching Jessica Schuster Design in 2013, she worked for esteemed designers, Kelly Wearstler and Tui Pranich. Jessica Schuster Design is based in Soho, New York and they have recently completed projects in New York City, The Hamptons, Palm Beach, Boston, and Miami. Jessica has been featured in Architectural Digest Online, NBC New York's Open House TV, My Domaine, The Coveteur, The Wall Street Journal, Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, and New York Cottages and Gardens Magazine.

About Esmé.. a project that turned a historic space into a design gem For her first-ever hotel project, the Manhattan-based interior designer Jessica Schuster took on the project of the Esmé and Casa Matanza buildings, on South Beach’s Española Way promenade. The 145-room Esmé’s interiors were meant to be “softer and sweeter,” Schuster says, while at 42 rooms, Casa Matanza is “darker and moodier,” but in both, Schuster employed a color palette of saturated citrus and jewel tones, and retained many architectural features from the hotels’ original 1920s buildings, including arched doorways, pecky cypress ceilings and a fireplace uncovered during demolition. The result is a richly eclectic space that guests may not want to leave, and won’t need to: Schuster connected Esmé’s multiple roof decks with a series of small bridges, so visitors can saunter from the new pool to cabanas to the Spanish tapas restaurant and sangria bar, with Casa Matanza soon be connected via a subterranean passageway so that people may take discreet advantage of each property’s amenities. “I was borrowing from yesterday, today and tomorrow to create this whimsical and fantastical experience,” Schuster says. “It’s very different for Miami.”
