MEET THE BPMA TRAINERS ALEX YATES PRINCIPAL LECTURER Alex has been the principal presenter of the BPMA lecture-based courses including the Certified Pump Systems auditor (CPSA) initiative for several years. Alex has worked in the field of roto-dynamic performance assessments for over 30 years and has worked in multiple industries, including water utilities, power generation, metal processing, automotive, aerospace/defence and petrochemical. Alex has also worked on some of the largest pumps in operation, with the largest assessed of 72MW.
Over recent years, Alex has started to specialise on optimising and designing integrated pumping systems for multi-system cooling tower networks. Alex’s knowledge and his work in the field leave him ideally placed to deliver these courses, bringing in a practical understanding from reviewing and working on over 12,000 pump and system assessments. “Our investigations have highlighted that most engineering courses today devote very little of their time to pumps or system hydraulics, hence those students coming out of college or university and entering a career in pumping have a gap in their knowledge, and this is where our pumping technology courses come into their own.”
Over this time, he has assessed pumps, blowers and hydro turbines throughout the world. He now specialises in the assessment of the pump performance and the interaction of multiple unit operations both for series and parallel systems.

MELANIE WARREN E-LEARNING PRINCIPAL TUTOR Melanie has worked within the pump industry for most of her life. Beginning her career as a Saturday Placement with Cat Pumps before moving on to Martonair and Cat Pumps in Minneapolis, where she achieved an HND in Mechanical, Production & Aeronautical Engineering from Farnborough Technical College.

After that Melanie gained more experience working with Valetmatic, John Crane, Pump Services (Camberley) Ltd, Selwood Group, Grundfos, Hydrainer, SLD Pumps & Power, Xylem Water Solutions specialising in (Flygt Pumps & Pims). Becoming the Principal e-Learning tutor for the BPMA in 2016. Melanie is now pleased to be able to give something back to the Industry from her wealth of knowledge and experience.
