Youngdonut, Bigkatsu, Ramne, Cornpotage, Chocomonakajumbo I went to Yoshidashoten in Q’s mall, Tennoji. It takes fifteen minutes by train. I went there before working part time. There are many kinds of dagashi. Young donut is small size sweet donut. I usually ate Bigkatu when I was a chiled. Ramne taste soda and easily cally. Conpotage is crunchy, I can’t stop eating. Chocomonakajumbo is my favorite ice cream. Many children in Yoshidashoten, so I was embarrassed. But I was enjoy. I thought ¥300 not enough at first, however dagashi was cheap. I eat dagashi almost every day after dinner. I feel happy when I eat dagashi and ice cream.

Mirumeiku (strawberry), Mikkusumoti, Felix, Konnyakuzeri, Ichigo Gamu and Green Soft I went to Aeon Mall in Ibaraki to buy dagashi. I go to Aeon Mall once in a year. I spent about 120 yen for dagashi. There is a dagashi store called Shizuya on the 3rd floor. I bought ice cream in Daily Yamazaki in Osaka University of Pharmaceutical Sciences. I spent about 180 yen on the ice cream. I buy breakfast and lunch in Daily Yamazaki in Osaka University of Pharmaceutical Sciences every day. I bought Mirumeiku (strawberry), Mikkusumoti, Felix, Konnyakuzeri, Itigo Gamu and Green Soft. Mirumeiku is 20 yen. Mirumeiku can easily become strawberry milk when put in milk. I don’t like milk, but I like strawberry milk. Mikkusumoti is 40 yen. Mikkusumoti contains 10 pieces in one pack. Konnyakuzeri and Felix
are 10 yen. Konnyakuzeri is delicious when you eat it cold. Felix is a chewing gum. It tastes like strawberry. Ichigo Gamu is 30 yen. There are four strawberry gums in a box. Strawberry gum can be easily inflated so you can practice making a balloon with it. Green Soft is 180 yen. Green Soft uses 100% of domestic tea leaves and is the local soft cream of Wakayama. Green Soft tastes like maccha. I went to Aeon Mall in Ibaraki with my friend. I felt like I returned to my childhood, and it was fun. 300 yen was not enough. I wanted to spend 500 yen. When I was a child, I was satisfied with 300 yen, because I felt like an adult and it felt like a luxury. I eat dagashi once in a year. I eat ice cream once in a month. My favorite dagashi is Felix. I practiced blowing balloons many times with Felix. I was not aware, but when I collected something I like, it was full of strawberry. I would like to raise

I went to Family Mart in Okamoto, Takatsuki. It was the first time for me to go there. I spent a total of 249 yen. Dars Milk Chocolate was 119 yen. Highchu Premium was 130yen. Dars contains glucose and fructose, so it helps me concentrate. Highchu has a もちもち texture. It makes me feel satisfied. Normaly, Highchu does not have a もちもち texture, but this highchu premium has one! If you buy this one, you will understand the もちもち texture. Because the raw ingredient of Dars is cacao chocolate, it is guaranteed that it is delicicus. To be honest, I wouldn’t normally eat dagashi, but this experience change my mind. I will buy Dars and Highchu premium again. If I was given 300 yen, I would buy Dars and Highchu premium.

I want to learn speaking! My final goal is traveling to America!
I bought my dagashi at Shizuya in Aeon Mall Ibaraki, a chain store in Ibaraki city in Osaka prefecture. It’s called a dagashiya, which is a cheap Japanese candy store mainly for children. This time I spent ¥299 to buy 10 sweets. I chose sweets that I bought when I was a child. I’ll introduce you to an interesting one: Warugaki Beer. It’s a powder that changes into juice when you dissolve it in water. The juice seems like a beer, so children can feel like they have grown up. I went to the store alone to take my time. There were many interesting dagashi and many dagashi that I loved when I was a child. It was difficult to choose, so ¥300 was not enough for me. But it was enough to enjoy shopping. My favorite dagashi is Dorachoco; it’s chocolate cream sandwich pancakes. Hatanaka, Meg (Michelle) My name is Meg Michelle Hatnaka. I’m a first year student studying pharmaceutical science at Osaka University of Pharmaceutical Sciences. I’m interested in medicine and helping people. I want to show you the wonderful world of dagashi and ice-cream. I could buy a lot of sweets for 300 yen at the supermarket near my house. I will show you some of the ones that I bought. Cocoa cigarettes are simple sugar sweets in bar shapes. Gaburichew is a big chewing candy. You can eat it like “gaburi”. Apricot tofu bar is an icecream that tastes like apricot tofu. It has nata de coco in it. I went shopping with my friends. I was good fun. I felt like an excited kid waiting for an excursion. I could also learn how to buy something with limited money.
Hirano, Nanako My name is Nanako Hirano. I’m a second year student studying pharmacy at Osaka University of Pharmaceutical Sciences. I bought my dagashi and ice cream at Family Mart. I go to there once a week. I spent 283 yen. I bought Yukimidaifuku Suzumimatcha, Wasabinori Taro, Yocchan and Carpas. I bought these dagashi because there were few types of dagashi at the convenience store. I bought the ice cream because I like Yukimidaifuku, however. I had never eaten Wasabinori Taro. It was very hot but delicious. It was very nostalgic because I bought dagashi when I was very young. I eat dagashi twice a year but I eat ice cream about once a month. I want to try Warugaki Beer next.
Kamada, Daiki My name is Daiki Kamada. My hometown is Kyoto city. I am a second year student studying pharmaceutical sciences at Osaka University of Pharmaceutical Sciences. I like touring on my bike, taking pictures and playing baseball.

I went to Daily Yamazaki (I sometimes go there). It is very convenient, but the price of products is not cheap. I bought three different Dagashi. The dagashi I used to by when I was a child were so cheap. This time, I spent under 300yen. I bought Apollo, Marble chocolate and coconut cookies. These were 288yen. I like Meiji chocolate series. This series has five types of chocolate including Apollo and Marble chocolate. When I was child I didn’t like the coconut flavor because of the smell. But I like very much now, so I often buy it recently. Apollo takes the cake; strawberry capped milk chocolate has never tasted so good. The origin of shape is Apollo 11. Marble chocolate has seven colors. They are very small, so I can eat them anywhere. Coconut cookies are simple cookies on coconut flavor. I recommend them. There have a simple flavor, but everyone knows their smell and flavor.
I went shopping with a classmate. It was fun definitely, but 300yen is not enough money. I bought other things too, like Kyorochan chocolate. They are also chocolates with peanuts inside. They’re too sweet to eat a lot, but I sometimes want to eat. I bought dagashi which I often ate when I was a child; I liked chocolate then and I still like chocolate now. I don’t buy dagashi or food in Daily Yamazaki, but this time I leaned how much to I spend when I buy something to want. I rarely buy dagashi, but I often buy ice cream. After I finished experimenting, I are ice cream with my team members. I always eat Haagen Das. It is very tasty. I leaned that I bought three pieces of Dagashi within 300yen, but I bought only one ice cream within 300yen.Everyone guess that easily, but I didn’t know that. It was supprising.
Kawai, Mami My name is Mami Kawai. My home town is Suita city. I like food, so I can eat everything. I hate insects. My hero is my mother. She is perfect! My dream is to do housework. I want to find someone very special. Nice to meet you!

I often go to Daily Yamazaki in our college. This store deals in a few types of bread, food, magazine, and stationary. Although all OUPS student use it, they complain that the store closes at 9 p.m. I bought: a Bisuko: cream sand biscuit, little bit sweet b Tara Tara: pasty fish meat, spicy, long and narrow, c Caplico: strawberry chocolate, corn d Bubble Soda: like mentos, with baking soda e Kabayaki Taro: fish meat with soy sauce, very thin My theme was ‘my best Daily Yamazaki dagashi’. OUPS students often eat them when studying, talking, or doing some work. At these times, they need sugar, but they don’t have much money. So my best Daily Yamazaki dagashi solves this problem.

The dagashi I bought were three Kabayakisanntarou, two Yakinikusanntarou, Taratarashitennjane-yo, Awa (cola) and Miyakokonnbu. The most expensive dagashi that I bought was Miyakokonnbu. It was 91 yen. The characteristic of this dagashi is the powder on the kelp. The powder is sweet and sour. I am jealous of this powder. You can understand my character from what I bought. My character is that I choose the same things I like.

I would like to introduce my favorite dagashi and ice cream. I went to Frest, a supermarket near my house. Frest has a bakery, cleaning shop, florist and many restaurants. Moreover, the fish, fruit and vegetables are sold at Frest are very flesh and delicious! I bought kyabetsutaro and yawamochi at Frest. Kyabetsutaro is a snack, and its sauce is tasty and very yummy. The character is printed on the package is also very cute. Yawamochi is a Japanese style ice cream with warabimochi in it. It is very sweet. If you eat it, you will feel fantastic. The experience made my really happy, because I bought my favorite things. I have been eating kyabetsutaro since I was a child, so I felt that I went back to my nostalgic childhood. About the yawamochi: I wanted to eat it once again. I want to suggest that both kyabetsutaro and yawamochi are delicious and affordable. I was surprised that kyabetsutaro cost only 19 yen! It’s very Cheap! And yawamochi was very classy. By all means, please try them.

I went to the Family Mart near my house. I often go to this convenience store. However, I am busy now and I can’t go there much. I bought Black Thunder, Umaibou and Pino. Black Thunder is a chocolate. It is easy to eat because it is bite size. Umaibou is a snack. It is very cheap and delicious. Pino is an ice cream. It is also easy to eat because it is bite size. I felt that 300 yen was not enough when I bought dagashi and ice cream. But I could buy various things for 300 yen if it was either only dagashi or ice cream. I had never eaten the dagashi. So I bought snacks by my mistake (not the dagashi).

I bought four products: umee paper was delicious, but it smelt terrible. I recommend the umee mints version. Umee mints are tiny, but taste so good. They taste like plum. I went there with my father. Above all, I like Himo Q. It’s a very long gummy! 126cm! There are two flavors; soda and cola. I enjoy them a lot. I was fun to return to my child hood. Enjoying so much dagashi for 300 yen is Japanese culture. I love dagashi and ice cream! Most of Japanese know the fun of choosing dagashi. Everyone from children to adults can enjoy this culture. I went shopping at Family Mart. I don’t go there often because there are many convenience stores near my house. I usually go to other convenience stores or supermarkets, but I couldn’t find the ice cream I wanted. I spent 297 yen there. I bought Jagarico, Chupa chups, and Choco-mint Ice. My mouth felt cool when I ate Choco-mint Ice. I love this feeling. This was the first time for me to eat Choco-mint Ice from Family Mart. I want to eat it again because it was delicious. The Jagarico I bought was a mini size. I was surprised to find it, but it had the same taste as the big one. Chupa chups have many flavors. The flavor I chose was green tea latte. I felt it was a little too sweet, but good. 300 yen was not enough. I wanted to buy more dagashi, but I couldn’t. I thought the Choco-mint Ice was a little expensive. It was disappointing that I could only buy a little. I went shopping alone, but I think I would have enjoyed it if I had chosen with my friends. I seldom eat dagashi and ice cream. I have no habit of eating between meals. The dagashi I ate after such a long time were delicious. When I went shopping, I saw many kinds of chocolate mint flavored sweets. I want to try them, too.

I bought Mini cola and Lumanndo ice cream. The mini cola was 34 yen. Lumanndo ice cream is 225 yen. Mini cola is a lemon-pop tasting cola sweet. Lumanndo is an ice cream which Lumanndo sells in bean-jam-filled waffles. I went to the supermarket with my mother. It was difficult for me to buy dagashi and ice cream not exceeding 300 yen. Yukimidaifuku, Ice Box (Grapefruit Flavor) and Shioame I went to the Abuno branch of Maruyasu supermarket. I go there once a week. I spent 277 yen this time. I bought Yukimidaifuku, Ice box (grapefruit flavor) and Shioame. First, I bought Yukimidaifuku for 98 yen. It is one of my most favorite ice creams. The uutside is gyuhi (a mochi-like confectionary made from kneaded rice flour, sugar and starch syrup) and inside is vanilla ice cream, so it has a chewy texture. Secondly, I bought Ice box (grapefruit flavor) for 70 yen. It has many small chunks of grapefruit flavored ice in it. It is cool and refreshing. It contains vitamin C and sodium. Additionally, it is only 13 kilocalories. Thirdly, I bought Shioame made by Kasugai for 89 yen. I bought it to prevent heat stroke, because I’m going to climb Mt. Kongo next week. I went shopping alone. I thought ¥300 was too much. Supermarkets are cheaper than convenience stores after all. This supermarket has bargains every Monday. I’ll tell you another good things. Baby Star Crispy Noodle Snack is dried, chickenflavored ramen. Soda Float is shaved ice. I enjoyed them all as if I had returned to my elementary school days. I was able to buy all my sweets for less than 300 yen. I have been eating Yan-yan-tukebo since I was little. It’s fun because you can decorate yourself, and change the cuteness (and the deliciousness) of your appearance. I want you to try Yanyan-tsukebo once. Saito, Yuka My name is Yuka Saito. Various Dagashi I went to a traditional dagashi shop near my house. The name of the shop is Matsuno, and it’s very cheap. Have a look at the photo. I bought many many dagashi. Dondonyaki and Potetofurai have a thick taste; they’re also crunch and delicious. Taratara Shiten Jyaneyo” is a familliary, spicy taste. Awa is soda pop. When you eat it, the inside of the mouth has feels fizzy. Shanpen Pop is a small soda gummy and Monster Stamp and Blue Gum are very interesting dagashi. When you eat them, the color of your tongue changes. I often eat dagashi which reminds me of the age when I was a primary scool child. That’s why I want to stay in future.

The store I went to was Family Mart in front of Koyoen Station. Family mart is a covenience store, and its sales rank third in the convenience store market. Recently, their sales position was taken over by Seven eleven. Family Mart is working to improve the quality of their products. I bought Papico and Young Donuts. Papico is a popular ice cream in Japan. I tried the white peach flavor. I was the first time for me to try it, and it was delicious. Also, I had Young Donuts for the first time. They’re very sweet. I got rid of my tiredness after eating them. I found we can buy many other sweets for 300 yen. I remembered choosing sweets for an excursion with my friends during my school days so as not to exceed the upper limit of my budget. I got very excited to eat another dagashi when I hit the limit. It feels nostalgic now. Papico can be divided into two parts, so you and your friend can share it at the same time. Sharing the same flavor may help you get along. In the same way, there are four Young Donuts in one package, so you are able to share them with your friends.
43

So, Yanyan Tsukebo and Sapporo Potato I went to Maruyasu (the shop in Abuno). It was the first time for me to go there, but I will go twice a week now because the supermarket is good. I spent 278 yen. • So (vanilla × mitsuya cider): 98 yen • Yanyan Tsukebo: 122 yen • Sapporo Potato (with tsubutsubu vegetables): 38 yen I felt nostalgic when I saw these dagashi. I like them very much, so I often eat them. I recommend them with confidence. I went to Maruyasu with my friend. It was fun to choose our dagashi. I thought 300 yen was enough money because each dagashi wasn’t expensive, but I learned that it was difficult to consider whether it was actually dagashi or not. I eat dagashi or ice cream everyday while studying. My favorite dagashi is Yanyan Tsukebo. Next time I want to try to spend exactly 300 yen.

I went shopping at Kansai Super which is near my house and cheaper than other places. When I was in elementary school I went to buy some snacks for the excursion, but now I go shopping for ingredients for dinner. What I bought was Nadate-Coco-Ice, Young Donuts and Fruit Forest. I had never eaten Nadate-Coco-Ice, but it became one of the most favorite ice creams for me when I tried it. Young Donuts are cheap, fill your stomache, and as you can see in the picture from Instagram, they’re reputed to leave lots of sugar on your fingers when you eat them. Fruit Forest has a unique touch. It is different to a rice cake, and different to a gummy. It is good for dieting because there are 77 kilocalories but still so delicious. It sticks to your teeth, which is a drawback. Nadate-Coco-Ice is 65 yen, Young Donut is 40 yen, and Fruit Forest is 30 yen. I felt this price would have been high for me in the past, but it’s cheap now.

Supercup Matcha Flavor, Kajirittyo, and Cheese Arare I went to Yume Gyarari Hatokin in Umeda for the first time with my friend. I bought three items: Supercup Matcha Flavor, Kajirittyo, and Cheese Arare. Supercup Matcha Flavor is a green tea flavored ice cream. Kajirittyo is soft and like a gummy candy. Cheese Arare is a snack. I tried Kajirittyo for the first time and it was so sweet for me. I recommend Cheese Arare because it doesn’t have a cheese flavor and even people who don’t like cheese can eat this one. 300 yen was enough for me. I learned dagashi is cheaper than sweets at the supermarket. My favorite dagashi is Kabayaki Santaro, and I want to try Kinakobou next.
55

Fuwafuwa Cake: Choco Mint & Nazono Suikaba I went shopping with my wife in 711. She said she wasn’t interested in dagashi because they all seemed unhealthy, but she was willing to help me look for something interesting. We had no idea what to choose, so I decided to choose something that I had never seen before. This ended up being the Fuwafuwa cake: Choco Mint flavor. It looks and feels like a marshmellow, and seems to have some sort of chocolate syrup in the middle. As you can see from the receipt , i got two for ¥136 (one for me and one for my wife). The flavor was very chocolate minty. It was obviously a marshmellow, so I was right about that. The package was kind of cute... but I don’t think I’ll buy it again. Looking in the ice cream section, I also decided to try
something that I had never tried before. One stood out from the rest really clearly: it was Nazono Suikaba. There was a picture of Suikaba Man on the front, which appears to be a hippo with a watermellon balaclava. Though it looked to be a slice of frozen watermelon on a stick, the flavors were chocolate (with chocolate chips) and watermellon? I thought it would be milk icecream, but it wasn’t; it was ice based, like a fruit pop. On the package it said that 5% was real watermellon juice. I don’t think i’ll get this one again either. I prefer classic icecream flavors, in simple packages. It’s interesting to explore the cheap sweets sections of convenience stores from time to time, but it just makes me realize that I’m not interested in processed foods anymore. I’d much rather have something fresh and natural, even if it means spending that extra 100 yen or so.
Duncan Brotherton Hello everyone! Thanks for helping to put together such a great magazine. I hope you’ll all keep in touch with each other in the future; university friends are friends for life.
