The CHOAS MODIFIER
Favourite music, bed heads, TKG recipes, things we hate, fashion from different eras, the contents of our bags, human eyes… the list goes on: students have a lot of good ideas for magazines. At Kyoto Seika University, I wanted the students in my Design English class to make a magazine together, but also to incorporate an element of total randomness into the process. Students should struggle. It builds fortitude.
I like to pull from hats, but merely because they have lids and are much more suited to storage, I bought a jar. The choice was probably also related to a corner I share with Ogawa Yohei on his Youtube Channel—
Talks from the Jar—where we pull design-related topics from a jar at random and discuss. The jar concept is nice; storage, preservation, fermentation, maturation, visibility.
In go all the students’ ideas. The jar is then passed around, shaken, and each student pulls a random idea. No matter what it is, they have to find or make something and create a spread in Adobe InDesign.
CHAOS is the randomness that goes into and comes out of the jar. The MOD (modifier) is the jar, a vessel for the chaos. The result of Q3’s work is the zine you hold in your hands; CHAOS MOD.

Someone stole the CHAOS Jar over the summer holiday. It was a massive dissapointment for me; I didn’t mind losing the jar itself, but the cards inside it con tained so many great ideas. We launched a small campaign in
the teachers room to try find it; but to no avail.
Q3 was a little quieter than the first part of the year. There were only a few less students, but I found the group dynamic was rather subdued in a few ways.
Still, I tried to offer design ad vice where I could, and I believe that the students took it in their strides.
