6699 Project: Eyes

Page 1

6699 is the typographical shape of quotation marks: “ and ”. This hand-made zine is a collection gathered by students in the English Conversation class at Kyoto University of Art and Design. The theme “Eyes” was chosen by popular vote in class on Tuesday the 4th of June, 2019. It was suggested by Kono Fujii. and recieved a total of 10 votes. The class agreed on two things. The first was to take a close up of someone’s eye, and to modify it in some way, in a before/ after style manner. The second was to write about it. They say the eyes “are the windows to the soul.” So I asked students if they could see something (anything!) in the eye they took a photo of. Can you? We hope you enjoy it.

This is an eye of my friend Asuka Ito. She is 18 years old and comes from Shiga. We’ve got to know each other on orientation day at Kyoto University of Art and Design. I think that she accepts her destiny and looks to the future because when I was taking this picture I felt as if her eyes shined bright like a starry sky. I put shiny images into her eye because I hope her future will shine.

Fuji, Kono

I’m Kono Fujii. I’m a first year student studying peforming arts at KUAD. I’m interested in designing and operating stage lighting. I love Japanese rock bands like Radwimps and One OK Rock. I also like the K-pop group Exo, and British rock band Coldplay!

This 22-year-old is named Jackie. He is my best friend from Hong Kong. Jackie is a handsome bachelor. He is also dumb—such a fool—but he is a really nice gentleman. He is pursuing a Medical degree in Australia. If you want to hang out with him, please contact me and I will give you his number. I am trying to make his ugly eye more good looking and smart. I used ink and markers to draw his eye. I wanted to make it more articulate and add some Manga style to it. Unfortunately, I already tried my best. I still can’t draw it well because this guy is too dumb.

Fung, Tsang Lok (Tony) Hallo! I’m Tony Tsang and my chinese name is Tsang Lok Fung. You can call me Tony. I’m from Hong Kong. I’m a second year student studying Manga at Kyoto university of art and design. I’m interested in illustration, animation and comics. I also like playing guitar, going to the gym and daydreaming.

This is my eye. I’m a talkative person. I’m in the performing arts department. When the first photo was taken, I was waiting for the result of my entrance exam. My head was full of my future and I was hoping it would be like my dream. I wanted to express a future bloom in the after photo. When I went downstairs with this makeup on to show my mom, she screamed out at me. “What did you do to your eye?!” she asked.

Furubayashi, Suzuka I’m Suzuka Fururbayashi. I’m a first year student studying performing arts at Kyoto University of Art and Design. I’m interested in stage management, direction and costume design. I also like making movies, serching for good places to travel and musicals. When I was a high school student, I went to Australia to study, twice. I loved the Australian life in Tasmania and Brisbane. I’ve been playing piano for 16 years and recently I got a qualification to teach.

This is my 55 year old father, Takeshi, from Tottori. He is funny and also always makes people laugh. I can see an impishness in his eye. I feel a kindness in the gentle corner of his eye and his wrinkles. He is also actually kind. I am a student in the Manga course so I drew his eye like a manga. I tried to express his character, but it’s difficult to draw with a mouse.

Aoi, Hirose My name is Aoi Hirose. I’m a student studying Manga at Kyoto University of Art & Design. I’m interested in Graphic Design and Typography. I also like Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, Transformers and Japanese Culture.

This is Shion Inoue, my friend. He is 20. He is from Shizuoka, and a little bit serious. In his eyes, I see some boredom and sleepyness. He looks older; about 25 years old. He looks like he is from Nagoya. He is drunk and sometimes angry. I closed his eye for him. Looking at him makes me sleepy because he looks so sleepy and angry himself.

Koyama, Kazunori My name is Kazunori Koyama, but please call me Kazu. I’m a third year student in the Product Design Course at Kyoto University of Art and Design. I’m interested in Outdoor gear, modeling beauty and graphic design. I also like motor cycles, games and watching baseball. That’s it. Thank you.

This is Feng, one of my close friends from China who is 24. We first met as classmates in the kindergarten we both attended. Although he used to beat me up then, we eventually became friends since. When I look into his large and brilliant eyes, I see intelligence and kindness. Somehow those eyes seem to have the ability to see through to my soul with sharpness and great enthusiasm. This feeling becomes even more apparent especially when we discuss serious topics. The edits I made to his eyes were mainly done to increase his gentleness a little bit, since people unfamiliar with Feng might feel like they are being judged when he looks at them. Like a quiet panther watches.

Li, Peicong Hope you’re having a good day! My name is Li Peicong. I’m a student at Kyoto University of Art and Design. I’m a second year student in the movie producer course. I’m interested in aerial photography and samurai movies, and I also like books, ps4 games and whisky. Maybe I’m not very good at english but i will do my best to use it in class talking.

Miss M’s eyes This is Miss M. She is from Kyushu, Japan. She is about 20 years old (I know it is very rude to ask the age of a girl). We met in a silent game of cards in class at KUAD. The rules of they game were so interesting: no one present was allowed to speak, so we had to communicate with only gestures. “The eyes are the window to a person’s soul.” What did I see in her eyes? She likes to laugh a lot, but sometimes I can feel a sadness after her smile. When we took this set of photos, I asked her to take a deep breath, relax and look at me calmly. Then I felt her sincerity and sadness. I don’t know why I felt sadness in her eyes. I just felt it by intuition. This is why I just drew a tear. This is a clown’s tear. Clowns generally make others laugh, look very happy, and they don’t show us their worries. No matter how lonely the clowns are, they hide it under their masks. I’m not saying she’s a clown, in my opinion, but her eyes have that meaning. Some people are tired because they always have to behave their best towards others. Because they care about the eyes and opinions of others, they don’t like to make trouble. However human beings are social animals, and it is very normal to rely on and help each other properly. I hope we can all live as happily as children do.

Li, Yunlong My name is Li Yunlong, but you can call me Lilili. I am a fourth year student studying history heritage at Kyoto University of Art & Design. I am interested in wooden Buddha statues, Japanese tea sets and collecting second-hand film cameras. I also like wood carving, cloth and paper handicrafts. I don’t buy them because I make them myself. I can make Japanese paper, for example. I print my pictures on my paper. Because the material used in Japanese paper is very special, the printed photos are very special, this is really interesting. I’m glad to be in this class.

Something in your eyes You said you are not beautiful “tu ne sais pas que tu es belle” Stephanie Garcia: My best friend, my sister, my family away from home. This eye belongs to Stephanie, my bff. She’s from France and I am Chinese. All of us, Argentine, Norwegian, Russian, British... London brought us all together. Inside this group, she was the most special one to me; she’s my sis. This eye is from when she found out I got her a Christmas gift, which was hidden under the Christmas tree. I changed nothing except the light in her eye. When you told me... you said you are not beautiful, that you don’t have options. That broken my heart. There’s stars and sunshine in your eyes; if you’re not beautiful then who is? Ma, Wenjia My name is Wenjia Ma. I came from Xi’an, China, but now I live in Kyoto, Japan. I’m studying Japanese painting at Kyoto University of Art & Design. I’m interested in Japanese painting, art history and design, but I also like reading and studying languages.

This is my grandfather’s eye. He is 84 years old and from Osaka. He looks calm in this photo, but he is a bright and positive person. I illustrated this in photoshop using a graphic tablet. My grandfather used to be a farmer. He used to work on a farm. He likes green things. When I look at his eyes, I can see a lot of nature, So I drew these as motifs.

Matsukawa, Yukiko My name is Yukiko Matsukawa. I’m a third year student studying illustration and graphic design at the University of Art and Design. I’m interested in typography, advertisement and package design. I also like illustration, ceramic art and playing computer games.

19

This is my friend Naoko. She is eighteen and from Saitama. I met her when I went to a private school at the age of twelve. In her eye I can see that she has composure and intent because it contains power. I felt she is enjoying her life with both eyes on the present and future. I want to use colors which I’ve never used before for my eyeshadow. The reason why I’ve never used this is because it’s not really my color. I don’t think it looks good on me so I used this color to decorate my eye strangely for this occasion. Umm, actually I don’t want to use this color everyday. It would be nice if I ever have to behave strangely sometime.

Nakagawa, Mariko Hi My name is Mariko. I’m a first year student studying Film Production at Kyoto University of Art and Design. I’m interested in directing, producing and writing. I also like watching movies, reading books and traveling. I usually watch three or four movies a week, but I haven’t watched so many recently because I have many things to do. The same goes for reading books... I want to read more. I have been to Hong Kong and Guam for sightseeing. Also I have been to Canada to study abroad. The experiences were so amazing. I want to see a lot of beautiful scenery which I can’t see in Japan and talk with a lot of people in person. That’s why I like traveling. This spring vacation, I really really wanted to travel but it was too short so I didn’t end up going anywhere. Someday when I get the chance to go on a long vacation, I’ll definately go somewhere.

This is my friend Naoto Morita. He is 18 and from Uji city. I met him at Kyoto University Art and Design. He is studying space design. His characteristics are his dropping eyes with single eyelids. They look very tender, but actually, he isn’t. So I changed his eyes to look more cute, tender and bright. I made larger, darker eyes. I used Makeup App.

Ogino, Issei Hi! My name is Issei Ogino. I’m a first year student studying space design and Kyoto University of Art and Design. I’m interested in the Avengers.

This person’s name is Jojor Libertina Rosulda Siagian. She lives in Medan, Indonesia; and was born at Parapat She’s from one Indonesia Ethnic groups called the Batak; specifically called Batak Toba. She’s 73 years old this year. She’s my grandmother on my mother’s side. In my grandmother’s eye I can see her past, and her feelings for her children and grandchildren. I think she was feeling tranquility, although there is still a little bit of concern towards her children. Sometimes, I get a nostalgic feeling looking at her. My grandmother, while struggling for a living, raised seven successful children even after my grandfather passed away when the Asian financial crisis occured. After she got old, and she could see her children and grandchildren living happily, I got the feeling that she is now rest assured even though she’s still feeling a bit of concern. Sometimes i get this nostalgic feeling. It’s like when you talk about something to an old friend. I thought that she sometimes thinks about my deceased grandfather and talks about her days in her prayer. I thought of my grandmother as someone who’s strong even when facing difficult situations. To emphasis that, I used monochrome in the overall picture. I also emphasis her blueish eyes, and added the picture of Toba lake on sunset. Toba lake is in my grandmother’s hometown, and the sunset depicts her old age, which she spends in peace. 25

Purwanto, Farhan Hi! My name is Farhan Purwanto. I’m a fourth year student studying Character Design at Kyoto University of Art and Design. I’m interested in character design, graphic design and illustration. I also like games, movies, and technology.

Makeup Eyes This eye is my friend Ayano’s. She is 19 years old, from Fukuoka and lives in Kyoto now. Her fashion is very individualistic and her dance performance is very fascinating. You can see her great character in her eyes. I think everyone feels she is great and considerate because of her gentle eyes. She likes fashion, beauty and cosmetics, which is why I wanted to design her eye this way. She usually likes clam colours like brown or orange, so this time, I wanted to try some colourful makeup like pink or red.

Sudo, Saeka Hi my name is Saeka Sudo. I’m a second year student at Kyoto University of Art and Design. I’m into dancing, exercising, and watching movies. I also like going on trips, fashion, and collecting perfume.

The difference in experience This eye is mine. I’m 21 years old.The other eye is mine merged with my mother’s. My mother is 55 years old. I don’t think I have gained a lot of experience in life so my eye looks soft. But as I gain more experiences and consider things, the eye will look stronger and sharper like the one in this picture. I tried to depict the difference in life experience using deeper orange colors. My mother knows how harsh reality is, so the eye looks like it has confidence. The shine in each eye expresses “passion”. It means that even if you are getting old, you can always have a passion for the future. Both my mother and I share the same favorite color: orange.

Takada, Sae Hello. My name is Sae Takada. I’m a second year student studying Japanese painting at Kyoto University of Art and Design. I’m interested in Japanese-style paintings, oil paintings and art history. Japanese-style painting, or Nihonga, has a delicacy and vitality to it. Famous works include for Seiseiruten by Taikan Yokoyama and Midorihibiku by Kaii Higasiyama. Generaly, Japanese paintings are drawn by natural mineral pigments called iwaenogu, sumi, the powder from shells called gofun and more. I think that a big difference between Japanese-style paintings and oil paintings is the texture. The former are painted with powdered minerals and glue called nikawa, so you can see their grains. Moreover, the grains are sparkly on the pictures. If you see a picture, you may feel that it is translucent. I also drew Japanese painting in this spring vacation. By the way, I also like Manzai, watching movies and taking pictures. Mazai is Japanesestyle comedy duo. One of the manzai duo is a straight person called a Tsukkomi, then there is a funny person called a Boke. These days, it’s more popular among young people than before. They often go to a theater to watch Manzai. I do so, too. Maybe, the most popular comedy duo in Japan is Wagyu. If you’re interested in Manzai, I recommend you watch them.

I took this photo when I was 17 years old. It was my golden age: I want live in this moment forever. In the second picture, I edited it in a trendy way, using an image of the arms from the Creation of Adam (this is god and Adam’s hand).

Takahata, Yukako My name is Yukako Takahata. I’m a first year student studying in the Department of Performing Arts at Kyoto University of Art and Design . I’m interested in old rock music and dancing. I also like hip hop, listening to jazz and go to live concerts.

This is my friend. She is a beautiful girl from China now studying in Musashino Art University. I love her personal style so much because I think it is very cool. When I was looking for someone with interesting eyes, she had her eyebrow pierced already and sent me a picture of her new eyebrow piercing with a big smile. When I saw this picture I immediately thought, ”this must be the one I am looking for”.

Tang, Mengru Hi! My name is Tang Mengru. I’m a student from Kyoto University of Art and Design. I’m a third year student in the Story Manga Course. I’m interested in cooking, drawing and PC games. I also like shopping: buying new games makes me very happy.

This is Pin, a 26 year old girl from Taiwan. She is a doctoral student at Kyoto University of Art and Design. I met her at Japanese language school two years ago. All our friends think she is a hardworking person and meticulous about everything, like a secretary or assistant. I can see her eyes are a little bloodshot; it makes her look very tired like she hasn’t closed her eyes in 10 days. Maybe she is wondering about the future or feels desperate about life. I used a lot of bright colors in the hope that could infuse some power into her eyes, and make her look like a teenage girl. I fancied that she wouldn’t like her new eye, but actually she thinks it’s very cute. (as far as I know she like restful colors more than bright colors).

Tsai, Ya Shan My name is Ya Shan Tsai. I’m a second year student studying in the textile course at Kyoto University of Art and Design. I’m interested in plant-dying and illustration. I also like underground music, old film cameras and traveling.
