6699 is the typographical shape of quotation marks: “ and ”. This hand-made zine is a collection gathered by students in the English Speaking class at Kyoto University of the Arts. The theme “What kind of SUPER POWER do you want?” was chosen by popular vote in class on Tuesday the 27th of October, 2020. It was suggested by Simon Phillips. and recieved a total of 11 votes. This year, classes were held on Zoom, so students voted through a google form. The superpower theme was a clear winner. We are dealing with the realm of impossibility here, so there was no limit set on the type of superpowers students were allowed to imagine. If you could have any super power at all, which would you choose, and to what ends? We hope you enjoy it.

Teleportation If I could have a superpower, I would want to have the ability to teleport. Teleporting is moving directly to the space I want. I think this ability is excellent in saving time. Because I think moving is a waste when I go somewhere. If I have the power to teleport, I could go right away if I forget my stuff at home. If that happens, I would never be late for my appointments. And if the power is strong, I can go back home every time I want to. Going to Korea is not easy because the flight is expensive and I don’t have time to go there and comeback; it is not difficult if I have a strong teleport ability. But I don’t think having superpowers means only good things. Even if I have superpowers, I will need exercise if I use them too much. And the more I use my abilities, the more likely I am to be found out as having superpowers. So I will only use it once in a while. If there are other people who find out about my superpower, I’m sure something tiring will happen. And I don’t want that. I want to live a normal life rather than going through a testing experience.

Choi, Seah I was born in Seoul, Republic of Korea. Since I was young, I’ve liked Japan because I’m interested in cartoons and stationery, and now I go to a university in Japan to study in art. I still like to collect stationery or figurines, so sometimes make or repaint them myself.

My Superpower If I could have a superpower, I would want to have superspeed like DC hero The Flash. Usually when people talk about superspeeds, they only think of running very fast. Actually, The Flash’s superspeed can do more. Of course I could run faster than light, but if I got hurt I could also heal very fast (not fast as the Wolverine though). I could finish reading a book in three seconds. Why would I want a superpower like this? Aside from helping and saving others, well, superspeed requires lots of energy, so I won’t get fat easily. At the moment, I must get up at 7:30 in the morning for my first lesson at 9:30. I need to get up, wash… so many things to do. But if I have superspeed, I can do all the things I need in 3 seconds, so that I can stay in bed longer and I won’t need to waste time on the road. I’d never have to worry about being late. The most important thing is tha I could do many many things in my life. Like I said, I can finish a book in seconds. That means I can read a lot of books in a short time. I can aquire a lot of knowledge. When I learn new skills, I can also learn very fast. Because I have superspeed, I am able to practise 10 thousand times in a few seconds. Some take ten years to master their skills, but I only need a few days or even hours. Isn’t that great?

Dong, Zewei (Totakui) I was born on August 14, 1998. I joined the Oil Painting Department of Kyoto Arts University in 2020.

Manipulate Time If I could have any superpower, I would like to be able to manipulate time. Manipulating time is the ability to go back in time, go into the future, and also stop time. I can also use it on myself. For example, to be able to return to my childhood or become an old woman. However, I need to be careful when using this power. When I go back in time and change the past, the future can be very different. This can be good or a bad, but I’m never sure which will be the case. For example, if I change the encounter of my father and mother, I might not be born myself. So if I have this power, I have to use it with care. The reason I want this power is because there were so many things I regretted about times in the past, and also from thinking about them as well. If I could do that, I would use it on myself if I make a mistake. I also want to use it in times of regret and when I want to know the future. For example, I would want to go back and be nicer to my grandmother before she passed away, and take her to different places. Also, I would want to redo a watercolor that I did well but failed in one spot.

Funo, Aika I’ll tell you a bit about myself. My name is Aika Funo. I’m from Osaka, and I grew up in Suita. In my free time I like to watch movies. I also like actor Norman Reedus. My favorite drama is The Walking Dead. I love this drama !! Nice to meet you!

If I could have any superpower… If someone said they would give me any superpower, I would say I want to have an ability to transfrom. If I could have this superpower, I would want to become something else other than myself. For example, water, a bird, a fish, a very tiny hobbit or very tall giant. It’s fun to imagine what I would do if I could transfrom.

Gim, Eujin I’ve been painting since I was 6 years old. In 2010, I was joined the Yurak girls middle school for the Performing Arts (England) and the Peniel international arts of highschool for the Performing Arts.

Superpower for the Earth If I could have any superpower, I’d like to be able to change plastic trash into money. If I could do that, I would change all the plastic waste in the ocean into money. Recently, the world is in trouble from serious environmental pollution from plastic waste. Plastics do not decompose naturally even after 100 years, so now the sea is full of plastic waste. Accordingly, experts say that in 2050 the sea will have the same percentage of plastic waste as fish. Furthermore, plastic waste not only destroys the sea’s ecosystem, but it also damages humans who consume the fish that ate the plastic.

Have you heard of the ‘Plastic Island’? This island is a huge pile of trash that was made from plastic thrown away by humans, and it has a surface area seven times larger than South Korea. I was shocked after hearing about this plastic problem, and it’s frightening to think that the future of the earthis to be covered with plastic waste.

Therefore, I would like to have a superpower to handle plastic waste and make money. I would become a CEO with this superpower and start a company that processes plastic waste, and I will build buildings where I can see Kyoto Tower, Eiffel Tower, and Seoul Tower, and I will also be an activist protecting endangered marine

Hong, Chohee I’m a student at Kyoto University of Arts. I major in character design, and I like cats and animation. I’m from Seoul, Korea.

The super power I want is bringing the deceased back to life If I could have any super power, I’d like to be able to bring the deceased in this world from the afterlife. If I could do that, I would meet and talk to those dear to me. It would also be great to be able to know the truth that only they knows, which could lead to case resolutions. But, this superpower has some demerits. First, the there is a time limit imposed on this superpower. If I use it, I would also lose a year of my lifespan. So, I can’t use this superpower many times. But, I wouldn’t spare my lifespan to meet those dear to me, because, I would want to tell them what I couldn’t tell them while I was alive. Secondly, I can’t use this superpower during the daytime. The deceased can materialize only during the night. So, the times that I can use this superpower are limited. Thirdly, the deceased can’t come to this world more than once. So, if I use this superpower, I must think carefully about the people that the deceased can meet. This superpower is a once-only opportunity for the deceased. I think that this superpower tells me the importance of life. Even thought I won’t be able to have this superpower, It makes me think about the importance of life.

Kudo, Rinako I’m Rinako. I’m good at dancing. I was a dance leader when I was in high school. Dance makes me happy. Would you like to dance with me?

Supider-like superpower If I was going to get a superpowers, I would want to have a spider-like ability and a strong body. I like and admire Hollywood action movies and parkour movies, but I’m not very good at physical activities myself. I can climb walls and run and jump in various places. I think it would feel great to be able to stick to the wall like a spider and swing on spider ropes. I’m sure my strong body and spiderlike abilities would be useful in my daily life outside of parkour-like movements. When I’m at home, I usually stay in the same place all the time, and sometimes I’m too lazy to move. If I could control spider silk at will then, for example, when the remote control for the air conditioner is far away, I would be able to use my spider silk to get the air conditioner on. I would be able to carry the remote control on me at all times. Maybe I could climb the walls like a spider and get out the window of my house in the shortest possible distance and get home. I would also be able to help people in need with those super powers. If there was a fire and people were stranded on a high floor of a building, I could climb the walls like a spider and carry people out with my strong body. If there was a burglary right in front of me, I could manipulate the spider’s thread and catch the culprit instantly.

Matsuda, Daiki I like movies. I like Hollywood movies better than Japanese movies, but I’m not very good at English because I watch them dubbed. Recently, my friend told me that the way I talk was like a scammer.

I would like to have that kind of super power for my hobby, my daily life, and my ability to help others. 15

I want to fly!! If i could have any super power, I’d like to be able to fly in the sky very fast. If I could do that, I would use it as a means of transportation from my home in Osaka to the university. It takes about two hours from my house to school. I chose this power because I want to spend that commuting time on my work and spending time in Kyoto. My ideal speed would be 100 kilometers per minute. The distance from my house to school is about 69km, so I should be able to get to school in less than a minute. If I could use other super powers, I would like the power to automatically clean my room. Because I’m lazy, and when I come back and my room is untidy, I don’t feel motivated. If I could use that power, my work would progress and my school grades would be excellent. If I could use other super powers, I would like the power to control fire. I like the manga, Fairy Tail. The main character can control fire. He is so cool; I also wanted to use that power. I want to use fire to warm everyone and cook.

Nakamori, Misaki Hi! My name is Misaki. I’m living Osaka. My favorite artist is サカナクション (Sakanaction), ヤバいTシャツ屋さん (Yabai T-shirts Yasan) and 星野源 (Hoshino, Gen). I always listen to their songs. My love food is kiwi fruit. When I eat kiwi, I cut it in half and eat it up with a spoon.

I am a baaaaad guuuuuy If I could have a superpower, I would like to be a villain. My superpower would be a meme attack. I could control someone‘s mind and let him/her think there is a blackhole at the center of his/her view. On the first day only a small part of the space around the blackhole would be twisted. After that, the blackhole would swell everyday, and after a week, the blackhole could twist 2/3 of the victim’s view. A month later, the victim wouldn’t be able to see anything clearly. After that, the victim’s view would suddenly became normal, but all the things which could prove they exist would be erased one after the other, even from other people’s memories. They would slowly start to be “erased”. They would still exist in this world, but no one would consider their existence and no one would see them or hear their voice (what do you think about ghosts now?) : ) 2020 is a special year for everyone: we have to stay at home and isolated, and everyone on the street wearing a mask. I’m a chill guy, so in quarantine I’m fine, but in the news and SNS, not everyone feels good. A lot of people feel down and depressed because of the isolation. I think it this ability is something similar, so I made it for this memorable year.

Peng, Zihan (Hou, Shikan) Hey, my name is Zihan Peng, but you can call me Houshikan. I’m from Guangzhou, China, and I’m 20 yrs old. I Love to travel alone with my lovely bike and take photos during the trip. I also love music, especially J-pop, Rock and EDM. Thanks for perusing my profile.

If I could have a superpower If I could have a superpower, I’d like to be able to use telekinesis. Telekinesis is the ability to control anything with just my mind. If I could do that, I would use it to get something that I need without moving. I am too lazy to move every day so this power would be very useful for me. It would be fun to control water. If I could do that, I could drink water without using anything. And also if I spill water I could clean it up easily. It would be useful if I had a large thing to throw away, I could compress it into a small shape and it would be easy to throw away. I could also use telekinesis to move myself; I would use it to myself to float in the air. It would be very fun and very useful. I could float in the air when I want to relax and there would be no need to use my body to stand, sit down or lie down in bed. I think floating in the air is more comfortable than lying in bed. All I want is to have a life with this very convenient ability to make it easy to live.

Phillipps, Simon I like to watch MCU movies. I can’t wait to watch the new one.

Teleportation If I could have any super power, I would like to be able to use teleportation. Teleportation is the ability to move to another place in a second. If I could do that I would use it whenever I have to go somewhere far away. It might be too realistic but I would use it to save time and money. So there would be no need to spend any money on transportation fees. Since 2017, I have been apart from my hometown. I could spend my weekend with my family or friends in Thailand by using this teleportation ability. Besides the COVID-19 pandemic, it is too risky to travel around without concern about infection. I love traveling. It would be fun to start a new day by sitting on the top of a mountain and watching sunrise, and then go back to take classes, as usual. I would go and grab some delicious street food in Bangkok for lunch. At the end of the day I would teleport to an island with a beautiful sunset and sea scenery. This is why I would choose this ability. It would also be great to be able to freeze time, so I could have plenty of time to spend on learning new skills or languages.

Prasertchai, Tanaporn I’m Tanaporn Prasertchai. I’m living kyoto since 2017. My hobby is gardening and playing violin.

My superpower In our daily work, we are inspired by different people. I want to have a superpower to be able to feel the negative emotions of others; that way I could make a difference in their lives. I am not saying that everyone needs to contribute their lives to the poor. Our lives are busy enough doing homework, playing sports, making friends, and seeking after your dreams. But I do think that you could live a more powerful life if you devote some of your time and energy to something much larger than yourself. When someone is in trouble because of sadness, I hope I could have the ability to feel their difficulties and help them. Many people choose to end their lives because they can’t get rid of their negative emotions. But as long as someone pulls them up at that moment, tragedy won’t happen. In the past two decades, our society and the quality of life has improved rapidly. But in this fast-paced life, we often have a lot of pressure. Mental health is often ignored in our lives. If I could have this ability, I could bring sunshine into everyone’s heart. Everyone experiences negative emotions and hopes; everyone can overcome them.

Qiu, Yuqing My name is QIU YUQING.I am from China. I’m a freshman in textile major.I like to watch TV show in my free time.

Super power If I could have any superpower I would like to have a power called Manipulation. Manipulation is the power I could use to make me able to move things without touching them. Since I was a child, I have been a very lazy person. That is why I always think that it would be great if I could do something like cooking or making some models without getting out of my squishy bed. Not just that, I think it would be awesome if I could going to school without carrying my heavy bag and make it float after me. And if I could control it well, may be I wouldn’t have to waste my time, like writing tons of notes on the desk, because I would be able to make the pencil move while doing something else. Now lets talk about how this power going to be useful in our society. If I could make things move without touching them, I could move or pick up something from where I or many other people couldn’t reach. So it would be very useful to use it to help others who need the help. For example, I could bring balloons back to kids and pick up things from very high shelves. Thank you for reading.

Silarat, Chomteera I’m a first year student studying product design at Kyoto University of Art and Design. I’m interested in product design, graphic design and illustration. I also like drawing with water color, pencil and marker.

Experience the limitations of my ability:Brain control If I could have any superpower, I would like to be able to control the usage of my brain. In the movie Lucy, they mentioned that the average human brain usage is only about 10 percent. If we could use our brains at 100 percent though, it is said that humans have the ability to go beyond our own limits. But this is a scientifically groundless argument. We use most of our brains, but our brainds have a certain role. Our right-brain capacity is used for: 1. Facial recognition 2. Emotional expression 3. Music 4. Reading emotions 5. Color 6. Intuition 8. Creativity Our left-brain capacity is used for: 1. Language 2. Logic 3. Criticism 4. Numeric 5. Reasoning If I could partially increase the use of my brain to suit the situation then...? It is something I could use to draw out the limits out of my ability. I want to challenge everything within my limits without anyone’s help.

Go ti the FUTURE and become rich If I could have any super power, I’d like to be able to move faster than light and have a body that can withstand it. For example, If the class starts at 9:00, I could sleep until 8:59 and I wouldn’t need to take a crowded train. Not only that, If I could move faster than light, I will be able to move time. This is the Theory of Relativity by Albert Einstein. It would look like the movie, Back to the Future, but there would be no need to get in the DeLorean. I would use this ability to go to the future from 2020. The future has better technologies than 2020. For example, new iPhones, new TVs and new computers would all be released in the future, and cars would be flying in the sky. If I could go to the future, I would want to steal many ideas and technologies from future. What’s more, if the COVID-19 problem is solved in the future, I would bring the most effective COVID-19 vaccine back to the present. Finally I could go back to the present time, use they money I make to be rich.

Wakashiro, Yudai I am 21. I’m from Otsu Shiga I’m recently,I’ve been walking.

If I could have magic The superpower I would like to get is magic. Magic is infinite and cool. Harry Potter had a big influence in my life. Most of the magical images I have are from him. If I could get magic, I would want to manipulate a wand, fly in the sky with a broom, and teleport. You could do anything in the imaginary world without it being impossible. And above all, it’s cool! Wands, spells and effects are attractive. Let’s talk about a slightly different but influencing work. It’s called Fantastic Beasts. My favorite actor appeared in this movie; Johnny Depp. He played the head enemy in his appearance: odd-eyed, fair-skinned, and very cool. And he uses the strongest Niwatoko cane. For me, I knew Johnny Depp from his comic part in the Pirates of the Caribbean. He used his fangs on his enemies in Fantastic Beasts. I was attracted to such a gap and the power of magic. But unfortunately Johnny Depp will drop out from the next movie. Mads Mikkelsen has taken his place, but I’m looking forward to that too.

Yoshino, Itsuki I’m 18 years old. I’m from Osaka. My favorite television is “AISEKISHOKUDOU”. Nice to meet you. 18 years old in the Department of Arts and Crafts.

Most of it has become an introduction to the work, but it is still full of magical splendor. I immediately came up with ‘magic’ on this subject of superpowers. Magic looks good, there are lots of good abilities, and there is no limit. Wonderful!

Mind Control If I could have any super power, I’d like to be able to mind control my students into thinking that English conversation is the most exciting thing in the whole world. If I could do that, then I wouldn’t have to chase anyone for their homework, and all my lessons would be so much fun. It would also be great to be able to do my design work at super high speeds, and make beer out of thin air when I finish.
