Creating English isn’t always about studying grammar, doing worksheets and having the teacher correct them. Sometimes, it’s about creating, and sharing what you have made with others. And laughing, especially if the results are not spectacular.

2

Preface Many students hate English by the time they finish high school. They associate learning English with learning grammar and studying for exams. Visual Diary 2016 was a project to help students see that learning a foreign language can be enjoyable when coupled with their own form of creativity, and something physical to take home. Class work was not about practicing grammar, but about sharing their passion for expression and creation. This book is a document of the what we all shared in class, from September 2016 to January 2017. We hope you enjoy it.

Hi, my name is Youngseo Choi. I’m from Seoul City in Korea. I like manga, and I wanted to come to Japan because I wanted to learn about manga and draw a serial manga in Japan. In the future, I would like to be a manga artist. My favourite food is strawberries. Sometimes I think I want to be a strawberry. I dislike spiders; they’re so creepy. I can draw manga, but I can’t draw grotesque manga because I hate cruelty. My dream is to draw manga until the day I die. My nightmare, however, is not to be able to draw manga anymore.

8

I drew myself as a cute character, because I thought that people could remember me easily. And I introduced myself by drawing what I like and dislike.

I’d love to be a singer for a day. I could sing relaxing songs and aggresive songs. I’m not good at singing, but I want to feel moved like a singer, when everyone sings together.

My hero is Kishibe Rohan. He’s a manga character from Jojo’s Bizzare Adventure. I want to live a manga life like him.

Dreams, effort, regognize. These words are my favourite words. It was good to be able to think about what I want to pursue and what kind of cartoon I want to draw again.

I’m good at shouting in Karaoke. And shouting can releive stress.

Hello, my name is Chen Ju Hsuan, I’m from Taiwan. I came to Japan after I graduated from high school. The profile illustration I drew is a sloth. Sloths are my favorite animal. They I’ve leisurely and always have a smile on their faces. I love cats, dogs and other animals too. I have a cat named “little stupid” at my home in Taiwan. I miss it very much and can’t wait to see it on my next vacation. I would like to have many pets in the future, like 3 cats and 2 dogs.

16

I drew things that I can’t live without; they have been with me and will be with me forever. I drew my Taiwan, my cat ‘little stupid’, an accessory from my teacher, and my tool wagon.

If I could, I’d like to be a vet, so that I can save lots of stray cats and dogs by myself.

My hero is my high school teacher. She is very kind and always thinks about her students. I learned a lot from her. She is just like my second mother.

“Love the life you live, live the life you love.” I don’t remember where I first saw this quote, but this sentence always cheers me up.

Hello, I am Ong Daoxie from Malaysia, Petaling Jaya (a city near the capital city, Kuala Lumpur). I find no difficulties in this English class because I have been speaking English since I was small. Though easy, it is not boring because we do all kinds of activities in class instead of just worksheets. Who would have thought that an English class would actually make you draw visual diaries and make a book out of it? You can actually feel a sense of satisfaction when the book is done. I wouldn’t say it’s the best class, but it’s a class worth putting effort into.

This logo is based on the front of Kyoto Zoukei University, which has many pillars. On each pillar, I’ve put the name of the university in English, Chinese, Korean and Japanese (in Kanji, Hiragana and

Katakana as well). Though it wasn’t selected in the end, my design reached the final round of presentations.

Hina Katou

When I was thinking about what idea to use, I thought of the Japanese artwork, chojyugiga. I wanted to do something with the rabbit and frog from it. If they were holding hands, I thought, it would

have both a Japanese and foreign image as well. So the Rabbit is wearing a kimono and the frog a Western suit. They’re friends.

2nd Place Winner

Nanami Nishioka

Good afternoon, here is my idea. I tried to show Kyoto and international exchange in my design. Kyoto is famous for tea. On the Japanese usu (a tea cup for macha) is a

world map. The splash shows international exchange. If you look carefully you can see the word “Kyoto “ in the chosen brush, used for mixing the tea.

Misaki Nomura

I wanted to make a design that shows both Kyoto and the world for this project. I came up with putting a Japanese umbrella with the earth together in the same picture.

Ong Daoxie

108

Lots of different countries have their own tea. for example, tea in Japan is Japanese green tea, and if you say tea in a Western country, in means the normal black tea we know. If you say

tea in China, you’re talking Puerh Tea. So asking someone, “What’s your cup of tea?” can literally mean “Which country do you come from?”

Maho Otsuka

When I think of Kyoto, it has a strong image of the Shinsengumi (the Edo era Shogonate Police force). To show international exchange I also drew a corresponding image of a knight, with the knight holding

the Shinsengumi’s katana blade and the Shinsengumi holding the knight’s spear.

Thanks One lesson, when we were talking about heros, Nishioka-san asked me who my hero was. I told her it was my students. The only one in the class who hadn’t done their homework was me. I have great respect for students who do their homework. University life is not all it’s made out to be; most students in Japan study full-time and have to balance homework from almost every class with part time jobs and other personal committments. Specalized English is not a compulsory subject either, which means it ranks low on the list of priorities. But still, when students walk into class with their homework done, and not only that, but when they’re drawn at an outstanding level, it brings tears to my eyes. I wish I could draw like my students can, but I also wish I could do my homework like they can too. Thank you for making Thursdays shine in my life. Duncan Brotherton (Course Instructor)
