Preface Many students hate English by the time they finish high school. They associate learning English with learning grammar and studying for exams. Visual Diary 2019 was a project to help students see that learning a foreign language could be enjoyable when coupled with their own form of creativity, and something physical to take home. Class work was not about practicing grammar, but about sharing their passion for expression and creation. This book is a document of the experience and what we all shared in class, from September 2019 to January 2020. We hope you enjoy it.

Hi! My name is Mizuki Hirayama (or just Mikki!), and I’m from Boston, Massachusetts. I came to Japan to study manga... BUT, recently I got into wadaiko (traditional Japanese drums), so I’ve been spending more time practicing. I also love cacti and succulent plants! They’re fun to observe and grow :D Oh, by the way, my birthday is in November, so if anyone wants to give me something, I’ll be waiting for my presents ;) *just kidding!!*

Just another Nice-To-Meet-You Exhibition 2019.12.19 - 2020.1.16 Now only in it’s second year, the Just another Nice-To-Meet-You Exhibition is coming to a close in 2020, this being my final year teaching Manga Specific English at Kyoto University of Art and Design. It is a pity, because it’s been easier to hold an

exhibition each year, and another year or two and it would have been like a welloiled machine. So for the last time, from the 19th of December till the 16th of January 2020, we adorned the 4th floor hallway space in the Ningenkan building at KUAD. The large-format printer grinded for 4 hours getting the funkyness onto paper. All photos are from this exhibition; all works were created by students involved. Report: Duncan Brotherton

Thanks This year will be my last year teaching Manga Specific English at Kyoto University of Art and Design. It’s been a great four years, and Visual Diary 2016, 2017, 2018 & 2019 are a nice record and memory of these crazy classes spent with crazy good students. This year I enforced a 7 Minute Conversation test. The goal was to have a conversation in English only for seven minutes, with NO JAPANESE. I’m proud to say that every student worked hard towards it, and regardless of their ability, were able to achieve that goal. Having a conversation can feel like a gym session if you’re not used to it. But that’s exactly what it is: communication is muscle building. You wanna be bilingual? You gotta do hard hours of mouth exercises. Manga students always seem to have stuff to talk about. They’re full of it. What’s “it,” you ask? I don’t know really; it’s kind of like a weird mix of pop-culture, excitedness, cotton candy kawaii, and a dash of whatever the Joker is made of. Thanks for the Thursday lessons dudes; you guys were a blast! Stay cool forever. Duncan Brotherton (Course Instructor) 72
