FG Sets Up Committee on Tax Reforms, Aims to Remove Barriers Impeding Business Growth

Deji Elumoye in Abuja

President Bola Tinubu yesterday approved the establishment of a Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms in line with his promise to remove all barriers impeding business growth in Nigeria.

According to a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Special Duties, Communications and Strategy, Dele Alake, the committee, which will be chaired by Fiscal Policy Partner and Africa Tax Leader at PriceWaterhouseCoopers (PwC), Mr. Taiwo Oyedele, will be made up of experts from both the private and public sectors and have responsibility for the various aspects of tax law reform, fiscal policy design and coordination, harmonisation of taxes, and revenue administration.

The release quoted the Special Adviser to the President on Revenue, Mr. Adelabu Zacch Adedeji, as explaining that President Tinubu recognises the importance of

a sound fiscal policy environment and an effective taxation system for the functioning of the government and the economy.

According to him: ''Nigeria ranks very low on the global ease of paying taxes, while the country's Tax to GDP ratio is one of the lowest in the world and well below the African average.

''This has led to an overreliance on borrowing to finance public spending which in turn limits the fiscal space as debt service costs consume a greater portion of government revenue, annually, resulting in a vicious cycle of inadequate funding for socioeconomic development.

''While some incremental progress has been recorded over the years, the outcomes have not been transformative enough to change the narrative."

Adedeji outlined the key challenges in Nigeria's tax system to include multiple taxes and revenue collection agencies, fragmented and complex tax system, low tax morale, high prevalence of tax evasion,

high cost of revenue administration, lack of coordination between fiscal and economic policies, and poor accountability in the utilisation of tax revenue.

The establishment of this committee reflects President Tinubu's commitment to addressing these challenges and bringing about transformative reforms in fiscal policy and taxation, he said.

The committee's primary objective is to enhance revenue collection efficiency, ensure transparent reporting, and promote the effective utilisation of tax and other revenues to boost citizens' tax morale, foster a healthy tax culture, and drive voluntary compliance.

These efforts will not only improve Nigeria's revenue profile but also create a more conducive and internationally-competitive business environment.

''Our aim is to transform the tax system to support sustainable development and achieve a minimum of 18% Tax to GDP ratio within the next three years without stifling investment or

economic growth.

''It should be noted that this committee will not only advise the government on necessary reforms, but will also drive the implementation of such recommendations in support of the comprehensive fiscal policy and tax reform agenda of the current administration,'' Adedeji added.

Pledges to Remove Bottlenecks Hindering Investments

President Tinubu has assured the manufacturing and service sectors that more reforms will be unfolded to enable efficiency and attract investments, saying the ongoing economic ‘‘revolution’’ will be deliberately steered to capture and favour teeming youths in the country.

Speaking yesterday while playing host to a delegation from MTN led by Group Chairman, Mcebisi Jonas, at the State House, Abuja, the President stressed, “We have a responsibility to revolutionise the

OTUDEKO BUYS N87.8BN SHARES TO BECOME LARGEST FIRST BANK SHAREHOLDER WITH 14 PERCENT

These shares which Otudeko bought at N19 per unit are the largest volume of First Bank shares traded in a single day since 2012, when the stock exchange started publishing data. The acquisitions take his shareholding to 14 percent of the bank’s outstanding market value.

A “disclosure of shareholding” sent to the Company Secretary, FBN Holdings Plc and dated July 7, 2023, by Honeywell Group Limited stated: "We write on behalf of Barbican Capital Limited, an affiliate of Honeywell Group Limited and refer to the provisions of Sections 119 and 120 of the Companies and Allied Matters Act 2020 (as amended).

“In addition to the previously disclosed interests by Honeywell Group Limited’s affiliates, kindly take this as notification that, as at 7th July 2023, Barbican Capital Limited has acquired an aggregate of 4,770,269,843 shares in FBN Holdings Plc.

Kindly accept the assurances of our highest regards. Yours faithfully, Yewande Giwa Head, Governance & Sustainability.”

On the same day, FBN Holdings Plc acknowledged Honeywell Group Limited’s acquisitions. In a letter signed by Adewale Arogundade, Acting Company Secretary, it stated: “This is to inform the public and our stakeholders that the Company received a notification dated July 7, 2023 from Honeywell Group Limited that its affiliate, Barbican Capital Limited has acquired an aggregate of 4,770,269,843 units of shares from the Company’s issued share capital of 35,895,292,791, as at the above referenced date. Based on the foregoing, the equity stake of Barbican Capital Limited in the Company is 13.3%.”

Otudeko, who was chairman of First Bank until 2019, is making a swift comeback to become the single largest shareholder of the bank.

Billionaire Femi Otedola became the bank’s single largest shareholder in 2021 after a tussle with Hassan Odukale who was also vying for control of the bank after a leadership gap emerged from Otudeko’s exit.

“Otudeko is flush with cash from the sale of Honeywell and is buying back the bank’s shares through entities linked to him,” a source familiar with the matter said.

With Otudeko now leading the battle for the control of First Bank of Nigeria Holdings Plc with 14 percent shareholding, Otedola drops to second with nine percent shareholding. Hassan Odukale and Mike Adenuga are joint third, each with seven percent shareholding. Saheed Arisekole is fourth with five percent shareholding.

Honeywell Group’s Barbican Capital Limited was incorporated on the 9th of March 2023 - RC 6900918. Persons with significant control of the firm are Otudeko’s children - Oyeleye Foluke of

Oladipo Diya Street, Abacha Estate, 2nd Avenue, Ikoyi, Lagos and Otudeko Obafemi Adedamola of Mekunwen Street, Ikoyi, Lagos.

The 4,770,269,843 shares bought were moved from 26 different accounts. They are Dogonyaro Investments Limited, Home Securities Limited, Skyview Estates Limited, Thames Investments & Sec Ltd, ESBI(WA) Limited, Fistful Securities Limited, Zanfara Packages, Row Park Limited, Edenvale Limited, Mansion House Limited, Bethlehem Properties Limited, Musa Haruna Foods, Yazidu Zakari Ventures Limited, Thornbull Securities Limited, Moore House Limited, Impressario Limited, Mahmoud Alheri Limited, Timothy Banfield Limited, The WhitBread Limited and Penrose Securities Limited. Flour Mills, Nigeria’s biggest miller by market value, snapped up Otudeko’s Honeywell Flour Mills Plc last year in a deal worth N82 billion.

EBONYI POLICE ARREST 13 ‘SIT-AT-HOME’ ENFORCERS, ARMY CRUSHES ABDUCTORS IN ZAMFARA, 4 GUNMEN KILLED IN ENUGU

“sit at home” day that occurred at the Ishi-Eke market in Abakiliki, the state capital.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Faleye Olayele, told journalists in Abakaliki yesterday that among the 15 suspects arrested were two herbalists, who he identified as Okwudili Otozi and Nnenna Ali.

According to CP Olayele, “They have attacked our area commander and burnt our vehicle. They have been terrorizing the state. On July 4, they came to Ishieke firing sporadically and that was on Tuesday.

“I want to tell you that 15 of them have been apprehended. We recovered arms and charms of different kinds.”

He said the suspects were preparing for another attack yesterday when they were arrested by operatives of the command, adding, “This shows that our officers are dedicated to their duties; the arrest was made possible by our men through the information we got.”

However, Otozi, one of the two herbalists, said the gang

approached him for medicine and that they forced him to accompany them to the bush for more preparations.

He said, “I did not know that they wanted to operate in Ebonyi; they came to me and requested for medicine and I gave it to them, after which they forced me to join them to the bush for further preparations.

“Please, I was forced to follow them after I gave them the medicine.”

On Tuesday, the gunmen were seen in a viral video, shooting sporadically, while demanding that Nnamdi Kanu, the detained IPOB leader, be released. A loud voice in the viral video said they will continue to enforce the sit-at-home order until Kanu was set free, as the gunshots rang out.

“It is happening live at Ishi-Eke market, Abakiliki in Ebonyi state. We demand the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. The land will know no peace if Kanu is still detained,” the voice in the video said.

“Shoot them, kill them, destroy everything and set it on fire,

since they cannot obey simple instructions. They were asked to stay at home but they neglected the instruction.

“I don’t want anything to remain. Burn everything you see, we are not happy at all. Kanu must be released. No Nnamdi Kanu, no peace in the land. As you can see, everywhere is burning.”

On June 14, Simon Ekpa, a self-acclaimed disciple of Kanu, declared a total lockdown from July 3 to 10, excluding July 6, across states in the South-east, to press demands for the release of the IPOB leader, who is in the custody of the Department of State Service.

economy so that our youths can share in the prosperity of the nation, otherwise we are only waiting for the dreams to be charted.

“If you have any problems or impediments do let us know. We are ready to remove bottlenecks to investments in the economy,’’ the President noted while acknowledging the sweeping changes across the world, largely driven by technology.”

President Tinubu said the growing rural-urban migration can only be controlled with more investments in digital technology that will directly improve healthcare systems and education for the poor.

“I am happy you are moving from Corporate Social Responsibility to be more incisive and inquisitive with technology so that we can see how we can partner structurally.

“You can do a lot for the economy by partnering with us. We believe no one can succeed alone. The structural adjustments we are making are to ensure we face the right direction and arrive at a destination that caters for our

people.

“You and I will make sure that the people have a share of that prosperity. We will, together, build a well-informed society. We have to re-assess the journey. I am glad that the stock market is responding positively to the structural adjustments,’’ he added.

Earlier in his address, MTN Group Chairman said the company had a plan of investing $3.5 billion in the economy over the next five years, with a broader vision of becoming a pan-African company by moving investments from the Middle East and focusing more on Africa, especially Nigeria, where it gets the highest return on investment.

Jonas congratulated the President for the upswing of interest in the country within a short period since he assumed office, May 29, 2023, promising to support in mobilisation of other investors with about $1.5 trillion to look towards Nigeria, where reforms had been styled to favour business and encourage inclusive development.

The June 12 Election

After an aborted initial primary, Abiola stood for the presidential nomination of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and beat Ambassador Baba Gana Kingibe and Atiku Abubakar to secure the presidential nomination of the SDP ahead of the 12 June 1993 presidential elections.

He then ran for the presidency in 1993. Abiola's running mate was his primary opponent, Gana Kingibe. He defeated his rival, Bashir Tofa of the National Republican Convention. The presidential election was declared Nigeria's freest and fairest by national and international observers, with Abiola even winning in his Northern opponent's home state of Kano.

Abiola won at the federal capital, Abuja, the military polling stations, and over two-thirds of Nigerian states.

Salawu and Suliat Wuraola Abiola. His father was a produce trader who primarily traded in cocoa, and his mother traded in kola nuts.

His name, Kashimawo, means "Let us wait and see".

Moshood Abiola was his father's 23rd child, but the first of them to survive infancy, hence the name 'Kashimawo'.

It was not until he was 15 years old that he was properly named Moshood by his parents. Abiola attended African Central School, Abeokuta for his primary education.

As a young boy, he assisted his father in the cocoa trade, but by the end of 1946, his father's business venture was failing, precipitated by the destruction of a cocoa consignment declared by a produce inspector to be of poor quality and unworthy for export and to be destroyed immediately.

The statement said the victims, including a minor, nine females and 14 males were rescued and evacuated from the kidnappers' hideout by the troops.

Four Gunmen Killed in Enugu

The Enugu State Police Command has crushed a gang of gunmen, who attempted to enforce an illegal sit-at-home in Enugu in the early hours of yesterday morning.

This was disclosed by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Command, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, in a statement yesterday evening.

The police had earlier on Friday reported that operatives of the command intercepted the criminals at One-Day, Awkunanaw, Enugu, as they were about to snatch an Enugu State Transport Company, ENTRACObranded Sharon mini-van from its driver at gunpoint for their operation.

Abiola, a Western Muslim was able to secure a national mandate freely and fairly, unprecedented in Nigeria's history. However, the election was annulled by Military President Ibrahim Babangida, causing a political crisis which led to General Sani Abacha seizing power later that year.

His support in the June 1993 presidential election cut across all geo-political zones and religious divisions. Abiola was the first Nigerian politician to accomplish such a spread during his time.

By the time of his death, he had become an unexpected symbol of democracy.

Abiola was awarded the National Honour of Grand Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (GCFR), awarded to only Nigerian heads of state, posthumously on June 6, 2018 by former President Muhammadu Buhari and Nigeria's democracy day was changed from May 29 to June 12 in his honour.

His Background

Abiola was born in Abeokuta, Ogun State to the family of

At the age of nine, he started his first business selling firewood gathered in the forest at dawn before school, to support his father and siblings.

Abiola founded a band at the age of 15 and would perform at various ceremonies in exchange for food. He was eventually able to require payment for his performances, and used the money to support his family and his secondary education at the Baptist Boys High School Abeokuta.

Abiola was the editor of the school magazine The Trumpeter, Olusegun Obasanjo was deputy editor. At the age of 19, he joined the National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons ostensibly because of its stronger pan-Nigerian origin compared with the Obafemi Awolowo-led Action Group.

In 1960, he obtained a government scholarship to study at the University of Glasgow, where he later earned a degree in Accountancy and qualified as a Chartered Accountant. He later became a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN).

Supreme Court Dismisses Alleged Perjury Case against Gov Oborevwori

Alex Enumah in Abuja

The Supreme Court in Abuja, yesterday, dismissed a case of perjury brought against the Governor of Delta State, Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, for lacking in merit.

The apex court dismissed the appeal filed by Mr. Ikie Aghwarianovwe, shortly after it upheld the current judgement of the Court of Appeal and Federal High Court, both in Delta State for conforming with the law.

Aghwarianovwe was seeking the disqualification of Oborevwori from the just concluded governorship election in Delta State, for allegedly supplying false information about his academic qualification and date of birth to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

He had approached the apex court after failing to get the two lower courts grant his relief seeking the disqualification of Oborevwori from the governorship race.

But, in a unanimous judgement delivered yesterday, the five-member panel of justices held that Aghwarianovwe in his appeal failed to show that the concurrent decisions of the two lower courts were perverse.

The judgement written by Justice Adamu Jauro and read by Justice Emmanuel Agim, affirmed the judgement of the Court of Appeal, Asaba Division, delivered on May 5, 2023 which upheld the judgement of the Federal High Court, Asaba Division, to the effect that Aghwarianovwe failed to prove his case and that Oborevwori was qualified to contest the last governorship election in the state.

Justice Jauro noted that none of the grounds of the appeal showed that the concurrent findings of the two lower courts were perverse.

He added: “After a very detailed consideration of every argument of all the parties on the various issues raised, I find that no matter how the instant appeal is viewed

The governor, who had earlier in the week slashed the tuition of the state university and the state School of Nursing by 50 per cent however noted that the free and compulsory education policy would take effect from the next academic session.

Kefas had shortly after assumption of office declared a state of emergency on education in the state while he declared the educational sector as very

it is bound to fail.

“There is no saving grace for it. Right from the grounds of appeal, to the prominent issue of jurisdiction and now to the merit itself, the appeal was dead

on arrival, with zero chance of success.

“Flowing from the foregoing, I find no merit in the instant appeal. I dismiss same,” he said and proceeded to affirm the earlier

deplorable. According to the governor, “I understand that things are very difficult for everyone in the state and indeed the country. I promised to make life better for the people and I am determined to fulfill that promise.

“The education sector in the state is not what we want for our children. I have gone round several schools already and I see the conditions of these schools and we would make sure that we put them in good shape.

“With effect from next academic year, there would be no more payment of school fees for both primary and secondary schools in the state.

“We would introduce internet services in schools so that the technological deficit currently suffered by our students and pupils will be bridged. We would ensure that you receive standard and qualitative education like your fellow students anywhere in the world,” he said.

Mutfwang Charges Security Agents to Hunt Down Bandits, as they Kill 5 in Plateau Community

Seriki Adinoyi in Jos

Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, has condemned the brutal attacks on the people of Mper of Bwai and Kogul communities of Panyam, in Mangu Local Government Area of the state by suspected bandits, which led to the death of at least five persons.

Charging security agents in the state to stop at nothing in

ensuring that the assailants were brought to book, the governor said he is pained by the continuing attacks on communities in the state.

Residents of Kogul Village confirmed that the militia arrived the community at about 9p.m. on Thursday and shot randomly at the people leading to the death of five, adding that their houses were also burnt.

They expressed concerns that

security agents in the state have not been able to make arrests and bring the attacks to an end.

The governor said he was surprised that some individuals would invade a community, kill and maim the people as well as destroy houses and property worth millions of naira for no just reason. Reaffirming his commitment to exploring all available legal avenues to fish out the perpetrators of the dastardly acts, Mutfwang

said government was mapping out strategies to ensure that the cycle of attacks and killings in the state was brought to an end. While sympathising with communities across the state that have lost their loved ones in recent times, the governor said that he shares in their pains, and appealed to them to take solace in God as everything was being done to end the persistent killings.

Umeh Urges FG to Declare Erosion Emergency in S’East

David-Chyddy Eleke in Awka

The Senator representing Anambra Central Senatorial Zone, Senator Victor Umeh, has called on the federal government to declare emergency on the menace of erosion in the South-east.

The Senator made the call while inspecting a portion of Owerri-Onitsha Expressway in Oba, Anambra State, where erosion cut off one lane of the road, causing diversion of traffic. Umeh, who inspected the por-

tion with some cabinet chiefs of Oba community, said there was need for the federal government to declare emergency on erosion menace in the South-east, but added that more urgent work was needed in the area to save houses and industries, which are threatened by the gullies.

“What we are seeing here is an emergency that the federal government should intervene in. If you look far to the other side of the gully, you will see that houses are threatened in this area, so for

industries too.

“One of the cabinet chiefs in Oba here with us has an industry over there, which provides employment to the people, but it is being threatened.

“This part of the road has been totally cut off, and you can see that the only part of the road that is now being used is also threatened.

“This is beyond the control of the state government. So there is need for the federal government to step in. The other lane will not

survive another two weeks from what we are seeing here.

“This is a very critical road, which links people from Lagos and other South-west part of the country into South-east and South-south. Second Niger Bridge is just over there.

“I came into Anambra last night, and decided to come and see this for myself today. I will take this back to the Senate, and we will let the Senate president to also know that his people also use this road.

Crimes in Obosi: Culprits Behind the Masks

The mere mention of the name of each town in Nigeria elicits comments from us and evokes both good and bad memories, too. And the town, Obosi, is imprinted on the minds of millions of Nigerians. Obosi, which is in Idemili North LGA of Anambra State, is a well-known town in Nigeria. Obosi, which is bordered by these towns, viz Nkpor, Oba, and Onitsha, is the country home of prominent Nigerians, who played critical roles in the development of Nigeria. Obosi is the home town of Igwe Isaac Iweka, theand festivals, the most celebrated and popular festival being the Ito-Ogbo festival. It is a periodic and collective birthday celebration of octogenarians. The Ito-Ogbo festival underlines pray to God for longevity. Other cultural festivals like the and celebrated in Obosi, too.

And Obosi is a fast developing town with industries springing up in every nook and cranny of the town. The proliferation of industries in the town has led to the reduction of the rate of unemployment in the area. Those industries do hire workers for the production of goods and provision of services to people.

successive state governments in towns in Anambra State, Obosi inclusive, helped to open up Obosi for development and rapid industrialization.

However, no town is without its downsides and developmental challenges. Obosi has its own peculiar for a relatively long while now.

But, it has successfully tackled its problem of crimes. Armed robbery incidents have abated in the town while cult-violence has stopped following rapprochement brokered for the cultists by prominent indigenes of the town. Thankfully, today, the atmosphere of peace is reigning in the town. But sadly, now, some miscreants and hoodlums, who are not natives of Obosi, have not given up do engage in such sundry criminal acts as pickpocketing, crimes, burglary, and others.

Sadly and incredibly, when they are caught in the acts claim that they hail from Obosi. But upon diligent scrutiny and investigation of their claims, their true identities will be criminal deeds are non-natives of Obosi town. Why they hide Those criminals and undesirable elements (non-indigenes of Obosi) who live within the Obosi metropolis are besmirching the reputation of Obosi town by their false claims. Their armed robbery, internet fraud, rape, burglary, and others. believing that Obosi natives are the perpetrators of criminal deeds in Obosi town. This is the reason why some Industrialists are giving Obosi town a wide berth regarding siting of industries and factories.

this, Obosi people are proud and honourable. And they do not demean themselves and soil their images by engaging in anti-social behaviours.

The Negative Effects of Shisha on Youth

Shisha, also known as hookah or waterpipe, has become increasingly popular among Nigerian youth in recent years. While it may be seen as a trendy and social activity, the and mental health of young individuals cannot be overlooked. This piece aims to highlight the detrimental consequences of shisha use on Nigerian youth, including its impact on respiratory health, addiction, and academic performance.

One of the significant negative effects of shisha use on Nigerian youth is its impact on respiratory health. Shisha smoking involves inhaling smoke that passes through water before being inhaled, leading many to believe that it is less harmful than cigarette smoking. However, research shows that shisha smoke contains numerous toxic substances, including carbon monoxide, heavy metals, and carcinogens, which can cause serious damage to the lungs and respiratory system. Pro-

longed shisha use can lead to respiratory diseases such as chronic bronchitis, asthma, and even lung cancer. Nigerian youth who engage in shisha smoking are putting themselves at a higher risk of developing these health conditions, compromising their overall well-being. Another negative consequence of shisha use among Nigerian youth is the potential for addiction. Shisha tobacco contains nicotine, a highly addictive substance that can lead to dependence and withdrawal symptoms. Many young individuals start smoking shisha as a recreational activity, unaware of the addictive nature of nicotine. Over time, they may find it increasingly difficult to quit or reduce their shisha consumption, leading to a cycle of addiction. This addiction can have severe implications on their physical and mental health, as well as their relationships and overall quality of life. Nigerian youth who become addicted to shisha may experience withdrawal symptoms such as irritability, anxiety, and difficulty concentrating, further exacerbating the negative effects on their well-being.

The negative effects of shisha on youth are not limited to physical health and addiction; it also impacts their academic performance. Regular shisha use can lead to decreased cognitive function, impaired memory, and reduced attention span. These cognitive impairments can hinder a student’s ability to concentrate, retain information, and perform well academically. Furthermore, shisha smoking often takes place in social settings, distracting young individuals from their studies and reducing the time and effort they invest in their education. As a result, Nigerian youth who engage in shisha smoking may experience a decline in their academic performance, limiting their future opportunities and potential.

Message to New Security Chiefs

The family and friends of Barrister Ahmad Muhammad slaughtered by terrorists in Zamfara State on Tuesday are still in shock. One of the numerous bands of terrorists ravaging the North-west invaded Muhammad’s home in Kwatarkwashi, Bungudu LGA, abducted and later killed him. His offence? He was actively involved in the resistance against terrorism in Kwatarkwashi.

Let’s flip to last week’s daring abduction of seven residents of Yewuti village in Kwali Area Council of Abuja. They were snatched from the house of the late Chairman of Kwali Council, Alhaji Mohammed Gimba. The terrorists are demanding a N7 million ransom. As at press time, the abductees had not been freed.

These are just a few recent pieces of evidence showing that terrorists are still very much active nationwide. They are moving around freely in the South-east, North-west, North-east and the North-central, killing, abducting and maiming, notwithstanding the emergence of a new government, with new security chiefs. The most traumatic was the killings by Fulani militias in Barkin-Ladi and Riyom LGAs of Plateau State last June. Over 120 people were sent to early graves.

I’m worried that within the first 30 days of the Tinubu government, no fewer than 237 persons were killed in different attacks across the country by terrorists. This is an average of eight people per day. I’m talking about human lives here; and these are the reported cases. There are scores of unreported cases during this period under review. Tinubu has been silent about killings under his watch. He did not deem it fit to even visit ravaged communities and families in Plateau, Sokoto, Zamfara and the rest. This is a story for another day.

Today’s piece is directed at the Chief of Defence Staff, Maj. Gen. Christopher Musa; Chief of Army Staff, Maj. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja; Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla; Chief of Air Staff, AVM Hassan Abubakar and the Acting Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun. These new guys need to note that the biggest drawback to the war against terrorism in the last 14 years is the unending lies by their predecessors. These precursors, whose opinions would have helped this country to tackle terrorism, became merchants of lies, rolling out imaginary security achievements. They also showed frightening ineptitude and enjoyed showboating while the country was on fire. That was why killings and abductions by terrorists became a daily occurrence under them with no part of Nigeria spared.

Terrorists are very much alive and kicking all over Nigeria. This is the truth that must be told. It is the truth that must be faced head-on by these new service chiefs. Only this truth can set Nigeria free from the servitude of terrorists. All the lies by previous security chiefs that terrorists had been degraded must be pushed aside by our

new security chiefs. Even in Borno State, ISWAP and Boko Haram are very much alive. Just three weeks back, the terrorists killed eight youths across communities in Mafa and Jere LGAs. Fifteen farmers were also killed in Molai and adjacent communities in Konduga LGA of the state. This war against terrorists can’t be won with lies.

Our military lacks the capacity to end the war against terrorists but previous service chiefs refused to face this fact. It is pertinent to state that technology, intelligence, quality equipment and quality manpower are necessities for taming terrorists. Use of drones for intelligence gathering and attacks is also vital. Our security agencies lack these. They obviously lack the capacity to effectively monitor the movement of terrorists. This is why these guerrillas move around in hundreds undetected.

The advanced world is in an era of fighting with drones. The drone that destroyed late Muammar Ghadaffi’s convoy was fired from a station in Alabama, United States. Our security agencies are not in any way close to this. Our gallant soldiers are doing their best but they need to be assisted. So, this country needs help from climes that can provide these military necessities and manpower. Nigeria’s previous security chiefs won’t admit this because of ego and personal gains.

The immediate past Chief of Defence Staff, retired General Lucky Irabor, left me depressed with his rejection of the clamour for the engagement of foreign military contractors (mercenaries) to support the military in the fight against the terrorists. The fact that he completely ruled out engaging military contractors shows there are things we are not being told about this unending war. Irabor presented mercenaries as an army

of occupation. This is not true. They are engaged by countries for specific purposes, with deadlines. It is not a crime to have military contractors joining a standing army to tame terrorists.

Even the United States engaged military contractors for its war in Iraq and some other locations. Is Irabor not aware of this? A people-oriented government will seek help from anywhere to protect its people against terrorists. We can all see the sloppy result of Irabor’s claims that the military can do the job alone.

The new service chiefs must seek help from climes that have successfully tamed terrorists. This country must seek assistance from private military contractors from these climes. I will always recommend Israeli military contractors. This is the way forward for Nigeria.

The killings of soldiers by terrorists without consequences have persisted for so long; the new security heads must tame this. There are so many examples of such killings. I can’t forget how terrorists in 2022 killed 30 soldiers in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State, a direct assault on Nigeria, without repercussions. The then Commander-in-Chief, Muhammadu Buhari vowed that the attackers would not go unpunished. The killers were never apprehended.

Also last year, terrorists killed 22 soldiers when they ambushed the convoy of the then Kebbi Deputy Governor, Sama’ila Dabai in Kanya, Danko/Wasagu LG of the state. Nothing happened in terms of ensuring the killers pay a heavy price.

One of the deadliest massacres of Nigerian soldiers by Boko Haram took place in Metele, Borno State, in November 2018. Scores of soldiers were killed at 157 Task Force Battalion in the town. The exact casualty figure is still a closely-protected secret. The commander of the battalion, Lt. Col. Ibrahim Sakaba was also killed during the attack. The terrorists that carried out the operation were never smoked out and slaughtered. I will also not forget the massacre of soldiers in places like Sasawa, Magumeri, Malam Fatori, Gashigha, Rann, Kanama, Gamboru-Ngala, Mafa, Kunduga, Pridang-Bitta and the rest. The leadership of the military did not respond lethally.

The new service chiefs must consistently avenge the killing of Nigerian soldiers. When terrorists kill security agents, the standard is for commanders to send forces after them and take their heads off. By this, they will drive a clear message to the terrorists that there is no room for nonsense. This will also hinder the remaining guerrillas from further atrocities. This is what I’m expecting from our new service chiefs.

The new IG must do the same for his men. Scores of policemen have been killed by IPOB/ESN in the South-east without consequences. Similarly, early in 2022, the Divisional Police Officer of Nasko Station in Magama LG of Niger State, CSP Umar Dakingari, and six of his men were killed by terrorists without consequences. About

Still on Calamity Governor Yusuf

Abba Yusuf was sworn in as Kano State Governor exactly 41 days ago today. Yet, we are not seeing moves to address pressing challenges of the state. There are challenges of child begging, drug abuse, illiteracy, poverty, maternal mortality and unemployment. It’s a long list. According to the National Bureau of Statistics, this state has over three million out-of-school children, the highest in Nigeria. No fewer than 10.5 million residents, representing 66.3 percent of the population, are poor. I thought

Yusuf would, from day one, frontally start tackling these diverse problems confronting Kano State. It is depressing to note that nothing is happening in this direction.

Yusuf is only interested in destroying anything and anybody with links to former governor Abdullahi Ganduje with his Executive lawlessness. That was why the Kano governor, fresh from his inauguration, revoked ownership and allocation papers of buildings overnight without due process. He was not interested in anything called the rule of law. Yusuf was reckless. I was shocked that in his inaugural speech, he directed the police to immediately take

over all land and properties supposedly illegally sold to “cronies and agents” of Ganduje. Instantly, he started demolishing private and public property.

My dear Yusuf, we are in a democracy which is anchored on law and due process. You must act within the laws of our land. Besides, these demolitions can’t add any value to the lives of the good people of the state. All demolitions must end. I will like to see you concentrating on the pressing problems of the state listed earlier in this piece. A word is enough for the wise.

the same time, the terrorists attacked a tomato processing company in Ngaski LGA of Kebbi State and killed four policemen. These happenings are really depressing and must be stopped.

Morale is evidently low among officers and men on the war fronts. They often struggle for allowances and equipment. Many of them have overstayed on the war front, contrary to the rules of engagement, yet, they are not rotated. The new service chiefs must end these negatives.

I also expect the new service chiefs to improve response to distress calls from communities when terrorists strike. Sometimes soldiers respond after the deed must have been done. In most cases, they don’t respond at all. For example, when terrorists attacked Kagoro Chiefdom, Kaura LGA of Kaduna State in December last year, they spent almost a whole day in Malagum and Sokwong communities, killing and maiming.

These two communities are supposedly covered by a special military task force called Operation Safe Haven. But the terrorists were not in a hurry to leave because they were very sure they would not be repelled by security agents. By the time they eventually left, 39 people had been killed and the two communities left in ruins. The military failed to respond to distress calls. So, the terrorists confidently burnt almost all the buildings in Sokwong. These failings must be addressed by the new security chiefs.

Tajudeen Abbas and His 33 Aides

There is so much pain in the land; we are regularly told to stomach it. Nigerians are constantly told to endure the pains of President Tinubu’s economic policies and cut expenses. Unfortunately, those in government are living big amid the burdens of Nigerians. They are not expected to cut any cost to help this country but to add more. One of such is the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abass. This man cares less about cutting the cost of governance.

Abbas has so far appointed 33 aides with all sorts of comical portfolios. He says the appointments are for effective delivery of his legislative agenda. What nonsense! This is why Nigeria is rated one of Africa’s worst-governed countries (based on the cost of governance), ranking 37th of 52 countries on the Mo Ibrahim Index of African Governance. This waste must not continue. Abbas must drastically trim this huge retinue of aides in order to reduce the cost of governance.

Auchi, alleged to have been involved in cultism because they abandoned invigilation of SPAT examinations.

In a swift response, however, the Assistant Public Relations Officer of the institution, Mrs. Adebola Ogunboyowa, debunked the allegations maintaining that the school ended its SPAT examinations on Friday as students are expected to vacate on Saturday.

She said: “The allegation is not true as whatever happened concerning cult clash occurred outside and had nothing to do

with the polytechnic community.

“As I speak to you right now, I am in school and nothing is happening within the polytechnic community.

“Whatever is happening, happened outside the polytechnic community because we are surrounded by host communities, and we have no power over it,” she said.

‘Skinny Love’ Stamps Hyzah’s Melodic Prowess

Afro-fusion maverick, Hyzah, is back at the forefront of heartmelding Afrobeats rhythms with a vibrant Afro-RnB record dubbed, “Skinny Love”. The track, which kicks off his music run for the year, is poised to be a catalyst for another enigmatic come-up within the Nigerian music scene.

Produced by his longtime collaborator, Ogknsteaks, “Skinny Love” soars as an evergreen love record, stamping Hyzah’s melodic prowess which first got the attention of global stars like Drake, The Game, Russ, Burna Boy, among others.

Laced with acoustics and sultry percussion, the feel-good record expands the sonic palette of Hyzah’s blooming discography, which

kicked off with a faster street pop tempo. It is a stealthy return since his last offering dubbed, “Wine and Colombo”, an infectious duet with US-based rapper Bugus, which was produced by Grammy-nominated act Russ.

Born Isaiah Ademiju Gbenga, Hyzah’s rise has been marked with the most iconic of motivations. After a brief stint with freestyling to strangers, fortune found him in the bustling slums of Lagos. A fated freestyle video made its way to the social media feed of the Canadian music icon, Drake, who gave the 22-year-old singer a lot of invaluable advice and encouragement. He also received a major co-sign from American fashion giants MSCHF.

Hyzah’s enigma, as is expected on his forthcoming EP is a fine blend of conscious lyricism, free-form expression and stellar sonics. His energetic and enthralling cadences, evocative storytelling tradition, and indigenous call-andresponse style are all ingredients set to spice up

his recipe for longevity in the music industry. With “Skinny Love”, Hyzah takes slow and sensual loving, to the corridors of harmony, blessing the libraries of music lovers who have heavy appetites for fresh and evergreen finds.

Larry Zuka

Rita Daniels and I Were Never Married

United States of America - based Larry Azukaego, popularly known as Larry Zuka is an artiste and filmmaker who started his musical journey in the 90s. Born in Asaba Delta State, Zuka grew up with a strong desire to express his innermost thoughts and feelings through an art form. With a Bachelor of Arts degree in Creative Arts from the University of Lagos, Zuka proceeded further to study film making at National Film Institute, Jos, Plateau State. In this interview with Mary Nnah, the artiste speaks about the rumoured marriage with Rita Daniels, music and more

There was a rumour that was made around at the time that you and Rita Daniels got married. Tell us about your relationship with Rita Daniels. I did not even know how the rumour that I married Rita Daniels started but it was funny. All I can say is that I did a song that featured her. and the concept of the video was that we got married. If Regina decides to marry an older man and she is happy about it, does love care?

That was the real reason why I wrote that song and had to do it with Regina’s mother.

‘In Love with You”, is a story of love. It says in the song that when love hits your heart, you will never fall, and it does not matter who or what you are. You may be old or young or black or white, it does not matter. Rita Daniels is someone I had known many years before Regina came to the limelight. She was very little then, but we were just friends. We never even dated. We respect each other and nothing more. The internet was exploding about it and then I was wondering why the whole noise. I have been in the entertainment industry for a long time, won awards and dropped a couple of good songs and people never cared about me, then with this the news was all over and even then, they were not even interested in me per se, but only interested in seeing Rita in

a bad light. I did not understand that either. If I had married Rita really, what is the big deal? I don’t think Rita is older than me, but even if she is, does love care?

My type of Afro is for all ages. It is beautiful music. Besides, beautiful music transcends all demographics. You don’t say you want to do it for kids or elders. Good music is good music. It is just like wine. As it gets older, my music gets better. My message for the youths is that they should do music because they are very passionate about it. Music is a very jealous profession. If you are not very sure that you want to do music, please don’t do music. If you have to do music, give it all you have. They need to practice regularly.

My message for upcoming musicians is for them to hold up to their dreams. They should not allow anybody to put them down or tell them that their music is not good because any creativity is good. They should just keep doing what they are doing. No teacher like doing it.

Glitz, Glamour at 2023 Ojude Oba Festival

Charles Ajunwa writes that this year’s Ojude Oba Festival sustained its tradition of showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the Ijebus

Travellers on the Ijebu Ode axis of the ever-busy Benin/Lagos Expressway last week would have come across different messages announcing the 2023 edition of the Ojude Oba Festival. Right from the flyover at the popular Ijebu Ode Junction to the second flyover leading into the ancient town, all the roads, streets, roundabouts, homes and business centres all wore a new look.

All the strategic points within the ancient town were littered with giant billboards and banners having the inscriptions of ‘Ojude Oba Festival 2023’ and photographs of His Royal Majesty, Alaiyeluwa Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona (Ogbagba II, Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland), including those of important personalities, age groups and major sponsors of the annual socioreligious event. The air of celebration was felt all over Ijebuland.

With a clement weather on Friday, the whole town was agog as sons and daughters of Ijebuland and visitors from all walks of life trooped to the Awujale Pavilion, venue of the annual Ojude Oba Festival. Security operatives stationed at different points within the town especially those at the entrance leading to the festival venue had hectic time controlling the mammoth crowd who came to pay homage to the Kabiyesi, Oba Adetona who has been on the throne of his ancestors for 63 years and one of the longest serving kings in Nigeria. Originally, the Ojude Oba Festival used to take place at the Oba’s palace but it was moved to its permanent location which has better facilities to accommodate the increasing number of guests yearly.

There was a rainbow of coulours within and outside the pavilion as different groups dressed in their traditional attires maintained decorum sitting on their allocated seat arrangements by the organisers of the festival. Apart from melodious sounds echoing from local drums, children, youths and the elderly danced to the rhythms from a live Yoruba musical group who entertained the surging crowd throughout the festival.

The atmosphere was further electrified at exactly 9.40a.m. with the arrival of Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, who walked round all the stands exchanging pleasantries and taking photographs with different age groups.

As soon as Governor Abiodun settled down on his seat, the master of ceremony announced the National Anthem which was followed by the Ogun State Anthem (Ise Ya), Awujale Anthem/Oriki Ogbagba.AftertheChiefImamofIjebuland,Sheikh

Miftahudeen Gbadegeshin Ayanbadejo said the opening prayer, the Special Guest of Honour, Sir Clement Olu Okeowo and his wife, Lady Grace Adesola Okeowo were introduced, and Chairman, Ojude Oba Festival Committee, Otunba Wahab

O. Osinubi welcomed all the participants.

Different age grades (Regberegbes) who participated in the parade, one after the other paid homage to Alaiyeluwa, Awujale of Ijebuland, who blessed them.

Other groups like Balogun Families and horse riders, Osi Balogun, Otun Balogun and Balogun of Ijebu Ode and horse riders who wore unique warriors’ costumes also paid homage to Awujale.

History of Ojude Oba

Ojude Oba which means “the king’s fore-court or frontage” could also be translated as “majestic outing”. The Ojude Oba festival in Ijebu Ode is known to the Ijebus as a major festival that brings them together. The native age group (Regberegbe)) indigenes, their friends, and associates from far and near throng the palace of the Awujale of Ijebuland for the carnival-like celebration. The festival is celebrated on the third day after Id-ElKabir. Ojude Oba is one of the most glamorous cultural and spiritual festivals in Ijebuland and in Ogun State in general. This is a celebration that has traditional, cultural, religious, social, and military significance. It has been celebrated for more than 100 years.

The reigning monarch, Oba Sikiru Adetona, Ogbagba II, Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland who was crowned on the 2nd of April

1960 has succeeded in rejigging and rebranding the festival into a global brand. The festival is not only all about opulent parade of culture and tradition by Ijebu sons and daughters who usually parade in their magnificent cultural robes, and the equestrian display by the families of warlords and warriors who defended the Ijebu nation in the years of yore against enemy incursions or wars and raids. The annual festival provides the Ijebu people and visitors, and their well-wishers the opportunity to supplicate to the Almighty God, take stock of their activities, embark on self-help projects, and reunite with family members and acquaintances.

In addition, this festival boosts commerce and trade in its entirety, as commercial and trading activities are at their peak before, during and after the festival. The festival touches every sphere of life in Ijebuland and environs. All the facilities – hotels, restaurants, artisans, craftsmen, transporters, professionals, market men and women are fully occupied before, and during the festival.

Choice of Theme

The Chairman of the Organising Committee, Otunba Wahab Osinusi, revealed that the theme of

2023 Ojude Oba Festival theme: ‘A Lesson in Religious Harmony’ was predicated on the relentless emphasis and prodigious impact of the festival on promotion of religious coexistence and harmony among Ijebu people. According to him, religious harmony provides a viable basis and clear roadmap for social transformation, cultural liberty and economic prosperity to thrive boundlessly. “So, the choice is very apt, germane and relevant to the phenomenal intentandpurposeofthemoderndayOjude Oba proudly spearheaded by Kabiyesi Awujale Oba Adetona,” he stressed.

Awujale’s Message of Peace and Unity

Oba Adetona who was physically present to welcome all his guests, in his welcome address, first, thanked God Almighty for the unending mercies showered on all, and for the steady growth, peace and tranquility being enjoyed across the length and breadth of Ijebuland.

“The atmosphere of peace being enjoyed across Ijebu communities and Nigeria is a commendable feat, particularly in the face of daring challenges experienced by all of us

in recent times. Unarguably, Nigeria will survive. “The Regberegbes, both existing and those making their maiden appearances today, I thank you so very much. I also make bold to say that Balogun and Eleshin families have been wonderful in both past and present times through their immeasurable contributions which have always made this festival a unique global brand in every ramification.”

Adenuga’s message Chairman of Globacom Limited, Dr. Mike Adenuga, in his goodwill message said the Ojude Oba Festival is a testament to the religious liberality in Yorubaland.

“The religious liberality which is one of the hallmarks of the success of the Yoruba race is a major feature of this festival which has become a heritage not only to the Ijebu, but to the entire Yoruba nation in Nigeria and in the Diaspora. There is hardly any Yoruba family today which is either totally Muslim or totally Christian. Every family in the Yoruba nation has a fair mix of both religions with some embracing the African Traditional Religion without prejudice. It is common, therefore, to see families celebrating all the major religious festivals including Christmas, Easter, Eid-El-Fitri and Eid-El-Kabir and, of course, Ojude Oba, with equal conviviality.”

Runsewe Praises Ijebu National Museum, On the sidelines of the festival, Director General, National Council for Arts and Culture (NCAC), Otunba Segun Runsewe, who toured the Ijebu National Museum located within the Awujale Pavilion, praised the Curator, Wanda Ibru and her team for doing a brilliant job in preserving the rich cultural heritage of the Ijebu.

Runsewe also presented a souvenir to the Awujale and later presented a plaque to Ibru during his familiarisation tour.

The NCAC boss, who is President of World Crafts Council for African Region, implored other states to take a cue from the Ijebu National Museum, saying states should be able to tell their stories to tourists and cultural critics.

“What we are trying to do now with this inhouse museum, is to encourage other states to take a cue from it so that they can have their own museums and when people come to their states, they have stories to tell tourists and cultural critics. For me, this is absolutely commendable and that is why I gave a plaque today (yesterday) to the Ijebu National Museum for doing a great job. For reminding us, if you don’t know where you are coming from it will be difficult to make progress.”

Sit-at-Home: Imperatives of Enugu’s Pushback

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) issued the sit-at-home order in the South East region on August 9, 2021 to protest the extraordinary rendition from Kenya in June 2021 and continued detention of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu. The group had while dishing the draconian order, said that every Monday, which is arguably the most important and fundamental business and transaction day of the week, would be set aside as no-work-day or what it called, sit-at-home until the release of Mazi Kanu by the Federal Government.

But it is no longer news that the sit-at-home order backfired, leaving in its trail some massive unintended consequences on the socio-economic, and even political development, of the South East region. It became a huge blow on the region and a sad case of ingesting poison out of anger and resentment and expecting your enemies to die, as people were not allowed to willingly comply. Instead, it was violently enforced.

Innocent people have been brutally murdered in the name of sit-at-home enforcement. Public facilities and private property, and life under the prevailing atmosphere could be rightly described in the words of the English philosopher, Thomas Hobbes, as sliding into the state of nature with its brutality, nastiness and shortness. That’s the Leviathan’s threatre of horror that some misguided hoodlums are bent at turning our once most peaceful region in Nigeria.

It is already about the 93rd sit-at-home Mondays, approximately over 22 months since August 9, 2021. Nothing positive has come out of it other than unimaginable wanton slosh of blood, maiming, destruction of the economy, exodus of businesses from the zone, occasioned hardships, and near collapse of public confidence and trust. Southeast economy is gradually grounding to the state of comatose. People are groaning in agony. Education, the most important institution of nation-building and human capital advancement, was becoming a “Haram” and the human institution is violently defied by blood tasty monsters.

The sit-at-home monster, to the Igbo man on the street, has become a torn on his flesh. It’s a crown of tears, blood

and sorrow inflicted on him by those supposedly parading as messiah. Things are no longer at ease. Their sources of livelihood have suffered devastating blow. The Igbo man lives in fear from all sides and corners of his abodes.

But to be fair to IPOB, the group ultimately cancelled whatever remained of the sit-at-home order after taking stock of the grievous consequences of the poorly thought through order. Mazi Kanu, despite being in the gulag of the Department of State Security (DSS), warned against any enforcement of the order, even stressing that enforcers of such dastardly directive be

treated as criminal elements and infiltrators sabotaging the people of the East.

Unfortunately, the horse had already left the stable, for despite IPOB’s repeated denouncements, merchants of chaos, terror, anarchy, and indeed, obviously, the sworn home-bred enemies of Igbo land and Kanu himself, have continued to promote and enforce the calamitous sit-at-home order. And they have left in their trails nothing but blood and sorrow.

Nobody would doubt the ruthless consequences of the continuous sit-at-home on our psyche, reputation, and economy of the South East. According to a report from the International Centre for Investigative Report (ICIR), over $12.215 billion or N5.375 trillion has been lost to sit-at-home since September 2021. This chilling figure was further corroborated by a study conducted by SBM Intelligence for DevEast Foundation Ltd/Gte, putting the ongoing loss in the South East at about 30% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the zone’s economy.

Transportation, one of the indispensable livewires of the economy in the region is losing over N10 billion for each sit-athome day. The Igbo people are known for trading as their primary occupation. In that sub-sector, the South East loses between N900 billion to N4 trillion. This means that every loss to the South East economy is a gain to the economy of other zones.

Enugu itself has been bleeding profusely. According to the new sheriff in town, Governor Peter Mbah, Enugu loses well over N10 billion every Monday. Also, take the creative and entertainment industry where Enugu used to be the home of Nollywood, with an influx of tourists and students from other parts of Nigeria craving to study there because of its adoring fauna and beautiful topographies. Entertainment industry was indeed a big business in Enugu. The relaxation, hospitality, leisure and pleasure from the state led to it being tagged, “042”. Today, the sit-at-home syndrome has forced the entertainment industry, including Nollywood out of the state, and guess who is benefitting greatly from the exodus? Asaba and the rest, of course.

X-raying Governor Radda’s MSMEs Initiative

In Nigeria, the Micro, Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (MSMEs) have not been given proper policy and funding support over the years despite their productive potential in the sustained drive by successful governments in the country.

But in Katsina, the future is apparently bright for the sector because Governor Dikko Radda, has concluded plans to establish a ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Scale Enterprises in the state as part of his economic recovery and diversification policy drive.

Radda, who announced this in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Ibrahim Kaula Mohammed, to commemorate the 2023 World MSME Day, said the proposed Ministry would be under his supervision seemingly to ensure efficient and effective service delivery.

Recognising the critical roles of MSMEs to economic growth and employment creation, the governor vowed to use the Small and Medium Development Agency’s (SMEDAN) template for the implementation of the ministry’s activities and employ professionals to man its affairs.

The former director-general of SMEDAN said: “The MSMEs Ministry we are planning to establish will be under my personal watch. I will ensure it gets the necessary supervision it needs administratively.

“The template I used in repositioning SMEDAN, between 2016 and 2022, when I was the agency’s director general, will be adopted for our proposed Ministry. I will also employ professionals to man its affairs”.

While recalling with fond nostalgia how he and other management staff of SMEDAN unveiled and implemented several reform policies, Governor Radda re-emphasised that the MSMEs Ministry would help to nurture, grow and ensure the survival of businesses with little capital in the state.

With the absence of an enabling environment for MSMEs to thrive in the country, Radda’s proposal for the establishment of the ministry is considered by business experts as a golden opportunity for small business ventures with little capital to prosper in the state.

The proposed ministry, if established, will further help the

micro, small and medium enterprises grow within value chains, optimise their use of resources and strengthen capacity.

Governor Radda’s holistic approach for MSMEs will also boost sustainability and the scale of results, thereby allowing business owners to expand their customer base, increase their revenue and reach higher levels of production.

The initiative will also create opportunities for entrepreneurs, particularly women, indigenous peoples and other vulnerable groups, through value chain and MSME development, including efforts to: strengthen market systems to improve their overall efficiency, effectiveness, and equitability.

Support MSMEs to increase their business competitiveness by increasing productivity, revenue, profit and/or reducing costs and enhance access to finance for MSMEs, support entrepreneurial training programmes and improve access to decision making skills among women entrepreneurs in the state.

Interestingly, the proposed ministry, among other initiatives, are carefully designed and outlined in Radda’s ‘Building Your Future Strategic Policy’ document which has been reviewed by many professionals from different fields of human endeavours.

The policy blueprint has been a dynamic and a guiding document that is being implemented by Governor Radda in line with the priorities and financial capacity of the state.

Nonetheless, encomiums from business experts had greeted Radda’s proposal for the establishment of the first-of-its-kind MSMEs Ministry in the state. Unarguably because of the role of the sector in tackling unemployment and boosting local economies.

One of the business experts, Alhaji Salisu Mamman, described the initiative as a right step in the right direction that will resuscitate the comatose nature of micro, small and medium enterprises and enhance the state’s revenue generation.

As the former DG of SMEDAN, he said, Radda has prerequisite experience and background to create and sustain the micro, small and medium enterprises Ministry “which will serve the most important segment of the private sector, which constitute 60 to 65 per cent of the Nigerian economy”.

The former chairman of the Katsina State Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture, further described

MSMES as the engine-room of economic growth, development and prosperity of any given society.

Mamman, who is also an accomplished entrepreneur, philanthropist and a household name in Katsina, said: “I am glad that His Excellency is taking a bull by the horns. It’s commendable and a right step to economic growth and development”.

“I know that the micro, small and medium scale enterprises across Northern Nigeria, especially in Katsina state, constitute 90 per cent of the informal sector. So, one of the cardinal objectives of the ministry when it comes into being, is to see how it can formalise this segment into a formal sector.

The astute entrepreneur added that using SMEDAN’s template to implement the ministry’s activities would ensure its sustainability “there is no template to leverage on better than the one that was used to catapult the operations of SMEDAN right from its own set”.

Ademola Lookman Atalanta’s New Prodigy

After journeying between seven clubs at the top flight,Ademola Lookman finally found a home in Bergamo after moving to Atalanta for €9.2million, and he has repaid every penny spent on him.The Super Eagle nicked 15 goals and eight assists in 33 games for the La Dea last season and it came as no surprise that he was voted Player of the Season

Super Eagles forward, Ademola Lookman had an amazing debut campaign at Atalanta, and he has been rewarded for his brilliance.

The former Leicester City man has become the first Nigerian player to win the Player of the Season Award at Italian Serie A club Atalanta.

Lookman had an outstanding debut campaign with Atalanta. The 25-year-old attacker just joined the club last summer from RB Leipzig for €9.2million, and he repaid every penny spent on him.

Lookman nicked 15 goals and eight assists in 33 games for the La Dea last season. However, his brilliance could only help the club to a 6th-place finish in the Serie A.

Following Lookman’s performances, he was nominated for the Player of the Award season alongside Liverpool-linked Teun Koopmeiners and Marten de Roon.

The club have now announced that Lookman has won the award. This means he is the first Nigerian player to win the award in Atalanta’s history.

In his short career, Super Eagles forward, Ademola Lookman has journeyed between seven clubs at the top flight, with two foreign missionary journeys inclusive- Germany and Italy.

However, the Nigerian seems to have found a home in Bergamo since moving to Atalanta, in the Serie A. His 15th goal of the season makes him the first Atalanta player to score 15 goals in his first season with club in 70 years.

When he scored his 13th, Stats platform Opta released a statement that the Nigerian international became the first Atalanta player to score 13 goals in his first Serie A season since Poul Rasmussen in 1952/1953. His goal against Cremonese made Look-

man the rookie to have scored the most in this league.

When asked how he is dealing with loneliness that comes with being a player in a foreign country, Lookman replied, “That’s a really tough one. I think trying to speak and communicate as much as you can with family, whether that’s on FaceTime on the phone, or texting.”

Lookman was no stranger playing abroad before in his career; he spent two years in Germany plying his trade at RB Leipzig. But during his spell with the German outfit, he wasn’t playing the desired game time he believed was needed for his development. He only appeared for the club 22 times in a two-year span, a tally he overtook last season for Atalanta.

“I just want to be playing because that’s where I get my joy from.”

Despite the isolation he may be feeling off the pitch, that clearly hasn’t seeped into his performances on the pitch. In fact, Lookman being placed outside his comfort zones globally has probably enhanced his focus on his game, and that focus has rewarded him in abundance.

It’s safe to say that Lookman has enjoyed his time in Bergamo so far. Arriving at the club last summer, after being unable to secure a move to his loanee club the season before, Leicester, the expectations for the 25-year-old were not high. Despite impressing during his time at Leicester, the lack of willingness of the club to loosen the purse strings showed the value (or the lack of) they placed on getting him into the club permanently. But that didn’t deter Atalanta from moving for his services.

Lookman’s talent has never been in doubt. His ability to cause pure chaos to any defensive line is spellbinding in itself. But,

in the modern game, football fans consume the product and analyse the players within that product; there is more emphasis on the numbers that a forward contributes to, and that has been a point of criticism in Lookman’s game, a weakness he has refined-28 goal involvements (15 goals and eight assists) is the most productive he has been in his career, with much of the season to play.

He arrived in Italy as a boy and has become a man. At 25, Lookman may be breaking through later than expected; his come-up has been incredible — and it seems he is only getting started.

Born and raised in Greater London, Lookman was socialised at the heart of the capital. As a child of Nigerian parents, the motivation put on him was to succeed in school at foremost -so he did. During his time at school, Lookman achieved three A*s and five As at GCSE, and despite his academic superiority, his future lay on the pitch and not off it.

Charlton saw the potential early and took him into their academy. His goal-scoring record for Charlton’s U18 and U21 teams propelled him through the Charlton academy ranks quickly, and he made his first-team debut for the Addicks in 2015 and scored his first goal for the club a month later against Brighton & Hove Albion.

The young winger would make 45 senior appearances for the club, scoring 10 goals and providing a further five assists leaving the club as one of the more prominent talents in the English football league, a talent that would attract Everton.

Lookman would join an Everton side in January for a fee of around £11 million, a side being led by the admirable but dwindling persona of Ronald Koeman.

Lookman’s lack of adaptability to life in Merseyside and the constant flipping

of managers meant a loan was needed for his development to continue on the right trajectory.

The need for first-team football was imperative for Lookman, and he saw Leipzig as the ideal place. He didn’t play much, but when he did, he impressed. Scoring five goals in 11 league appearances showed efficiency. It started to be a trademark of the attacker, scoring on his debut for RB Leipzig, the winner, in fact, in the away game against Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Leipzig was impressed with what they saw from Lookman, even if it was brief. And in the summer of 2019, they went back in for a player to make a move permanently.

Leipzig paid €25.5 million for Lookman’s services. The winger showed what he could offer in his temporary loan spell; his pace, versatility and ingenuity in and around the opposition box seemed a perfect match for the directness and perfect chaos of Timo Werner and the target man figure of Yussuf Poulsen.

Germany was however a setback in Ademola’s development. He was lost as a footballer and as a person. So, he went home. Lookman’s return to London would see him be part of a very limited side; their 18th placed finish and relegation back to the EFL Championship showed this.

Fulham’s time in the Premier League was cut short, but not Lookman’s as Leicester was there to offer him a way out, temporarily.

, in a much better Leicester compared to Fulham, Lookamn looked a lot more comfortable and started to mature into the player many believed he could be. The profile of a threatening modern Premier League winger was starting to flourish doubling his goal tally (8) showed that his efficient nature was returning to his game.

Remo Stars Overcome Enyimba in Naija Super 8 Opener

Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) runner-up, Remo Stars of Ikenne, defeated league champions, Enyimba Football Club, 2-1 in the opening fixture of Naija Super 8 tournament, at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, Lagos, yesterday.

Remo dominated the opening exchanges producing two shots on target within 15 minutes. The Ikenne boys opened the scoring in the 22nd minute through a low drive by new striker, Isaac James.

Enyimba responded with an equaliser in the 26th through Chisom Okereke. Remo Stars missed a glorious chance to regain the lead in the 43rd minute, with a free header that was put wide.

Ogunribigbe Seun restored Remo Stars

lead with a tap-in from close range in the 58th minute. The Ikenne boys held on to take the three points. Isaac James was voted ‘Hero of the Match’ by the fans, after scoring a goal and providing an assist.

In his post-match interview, Enyimba Coach, Finidi George, said he was happy with his boys despite the defeat. “This is off season competition. These boys have not rested. It showed today. I’m happy with my players, despite the loss. Traveling here makes it more difficult for us, compared to where Remo Stars came from. It’s not easy to start playing from September and it’s almost August. I’ve not had rest as well.

“I’m not complaining, Remo Stars have also had the kind of season we had. We want to win every game as sportsmen. We have two matches and we will win those matches

and qualify for the semi-finals,” he said.

Commenting on the match, Remo Stars coach, Daniel Ogunmodede said: “We came with a lot of grudges against Enyimba for denying us the league on goal difference. We played a very good team. They are bigger than us, they are a Champions League team. So, we saw this as preparation for Champions League and we wanted to measure with the best. We are happy we are able to measure up to them today.”

The tournament continues tomorrow with Group B matches between Akwa United and Yobe Desert Stars at 2pm, followed by Rivers United vs Lobi Stars at 4:30 pm. All the matches will be broadcast live on SuperSport Football (DStv ch 205 & GOtv ch 61).

Naija Super 8 Finals, Good Preparation for NPL Test, Says Katsina Utd Coach

Kunle Adewale

Before the Naija Super 8 Play offs held at the Eket Township Stadium in Eket, Akwa Ibom, Katsina United Coach, Usman Abdallah has always insisted that gaining promotion to the Nigeria Premier League, (NPL) was the club’s top priority and that their encounter against Kano Pillars at Eket was just a good preparation for the Changi Boys’ promotion quest.

True to type, Katsina United gained promotion to the NPL after picking one of the tickets at the Nigeria National League, NNL, Super 8 play offs at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba, Delta State.

Speaking with THISDAY ahead of their Naija Super 8 finals clash against Sporting Lagos tomorrow at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Abudullah said the focus of the team now is to use the Lagos showdown to expose his players ahead of the battle when the NPL kicks off.

“It’s a good thing we will be playing against some of the teams we would be encountering when the NPL kicks off in the Naija Super 8 finals, it therefore a good opportunity to expose the players to the battle that lies ahead of them when the season starts.

“After this tournament we can now analyse our performance and then determine the next line of action. If we will need to booster the team with some more experienced players or what have you. But a lot would be determined

by what the management wants for the team,” the former Enyimba of Aba expressed.

Katsina United put up a thrilling performance against Kano Pillars at the Naija Super 8 Play offs at the Eket Township Stadium and ran away with a lone goal victory.

However, Pillars felt hard done after the centre referee failed to award what many at the stadium felt was a glaring penalty which would have given them the lead if awarded and converted, but Katsina Utd proved that the victory over their northern rival as they did the double over coach Evans Ogeyi boys pipping them 1-0.

It is this grouse that coach Sani Lawan and his boys would be taking to the Nigeria National League, NNL, play offs where both teams would be battling for the ticket for promotion to the Nigeria Premier League, NPL, at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba.

To ensure that there will be no repeat of any obvious error the egg heads of the Nigeria Referee Association have promised to have their best referees on parade when Pillars and Katsina United clash in Asaba.

“I asked the referee after the match why he refused to award Kano Pillars the penalty and he said the player’s hand was not in an unnatural position that was why he didn’t give it as a penalty kick,” an NRA top official who would not want his name in print told THISDAY.

“However, to ensure there is no room for

error when both sides clash again in Asaba, we would ensure that our best referees are in charge,” he promised.

Speaking with THISDAY after the game in Eket, Abdallah admitted that Pillars were on course to have craved for a penalty to be awarded to them, that it was indeed a hand ball but felt the hand was however in a natural position. Just as he said if the referee’s decision had gone otherwise his team would have accepted it in good faith.

“The referee ruled out the penalty because the hand of the player was in a natural position, that was why he didn’t blow it as a penalty. That is my thought, but it was the referee’s choice. If he had blown it a penalty, there would have been little or no argument about it, “ Abdallah said.

The former Enyimba of Aba coach however said winning the Naija Super 8 Play offs was not really in the club’s agenda, but rather, it was a test run for their promotion quest in the NNL Super 8 Play offs in Asaba.

“The match could have gone either way, but the win would definitely serve as a moral booster for our play off matches in Asaba. Before the game I stated that the result of the match against Pillars does not really matter but rather to see the quality my boys would put up and make the necessary corrections be the Asaba showdown,” he noted.

Rangers Unveil Ilechukwu as Technical Adviser

Rangers International F.C of Enugu, the ‘Flying Antelopes’, have officially engaged and unveiled coach Fidelis Ilechukwu as the club’s technical adviser to take the place of coach Abdul Maikaba, who did not wish to re-negotiate his contract after it lapsed at the end of the 2022/2023 football season.

The brief but colorful ceremony happened at the club’s corporate office, G.R.A, Enugu, Wednesday, which had the club’s living legend, Christian Chukwu the technical director of the club; Enugu State F.A chairman, Tony Ugwu, who was ably represented by a board member of the association, Foster Chime; national chairman of Rangers football club supporters club, Dr. Orji Iloakazi and many other stakeholders of the club.

After putting pen to paper and being presented with the club’s replica jerseys, Ilechukwu, who was exuding a lot of confidence, said, “I must first give thanks to the government of Enugu state, the management of Rangers International F.C, supporters, and the media who are very important in this business. I am so happy to be here as I am very positive about making things work here and getting the needed results to take Rangers to the level it rightly belongs in the two years I have signed.”

While introducing the former M.F.M F.C, Heartland and Plateau United gaffer, the Administrative Secretary of the club, Ferdinand Ugwuarua, said, “I really want to appreciate God for making this event a reality, just as we owe a lot to the sports-loving governor of Enugu state, Peter Mbah, the executive governor for graciously approving this event as well as all critical stakeholders that came out for this event of signing and unveiling of our new technical adviser. This young coach has all it takes to improve his curriculum vitae, and we are solidly behind him to lead us to countless triumphs on the domestic scene for us to have a shot at the continent again.”

Calvin Bassey: Can He Brighten the Amex?

Barely a year after his £18.7million move to the Johan Cruyff Arena, Calvin Bassey is set for another move, this time to the American Express Community Stadium as Brighton see the Nigerian as an alternative to Levi Colwill. With the Seagulls believed to possess the best build up from the back in the Premier League last season, the big question is whether the Super Eagle would be a suitable addition considering he’s more of an orthodox defender

Brighton & HoveAlbion have reportedly identified Super Eagles and Ajax defender, Calvin Bassey as a potential alternative to Chelsea’s Levi Colwill.

Head coach, Roberto De Zerbi has expressed his desire to keep hold of Colwill, who enjoyed a successful seasonlong loan spell with the Seagulls in 2022-23, featuring 20 times in all competitions including 13 Premier League starts.

However, newly-appointed Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino is keen to work with Colwill next season and integrate the 20-year-old into his first-team plans, while the Blues are also understood to have offered the defender a new contract.

Brighton have not given up hope in signing Colwill on a permanent basis and are allegedly prepared to break their transfer record to lure the England Under-21 international back to the American Express Community Stadium.

Nevertheless, The Athletic reports that

the Seagulls could turn their attention to 23-year-old fellow left-footed defender Bassey should they fail in their pursuit of Colwill.

Brighton were interested in signing the Nigerian last summer before he left Scottish side Rangers to join Ajax for around £18.7m.

The Nigeria international arrived at the Johan Cruyff Arena following the departure of Lisandro Martinez to Manchester United, and he quickly became a first-team regular for the Dutch giants.

Indeed, Bassey chipped in with one goal and five assists in 39 appearances for Ajax across all competitions, starting 20 times in the Eredivisie as well as starting all six Champions League group-stage matches.

Bassey primarily operated as a central defender for Ajax last season but he also featured at left-back, where he played numerous times at Rangers.

The Leicester City academy graduate’s versatility is said to appeal to Brighton boss De Zerbi, who is interested in recruiting a

left-sided defender to provide competition for the club’s only senior left-back option Pervis Estupinan.

The 23-year-old made the move from Ibrox to Amsterdam in a transfer worth £18.7million last summer. Now, he is poised to join Premier League Brighton for a similar fee, or possibly slightly less, after the Seagulls were also interested in him a year ago.

When Bassey left Rangers last summer, it was initially believed that the club had negotiated a 10 percent sell-on clause for “any future fee,” potentially earning them up to £2m. However, according to the Rangers Review (via the Daily Record), this clause would only be triggered if Bassey moved for an amount surpassing the initial sale price, meaning they are set to miss out on a windfall.

Roberto De Zerbi, Brighton’s manager, is eager to bolster his defensive options following their qualification for the Europa League. Italian outlet Calcio Mercato has

identified Bassey as a player of interest to the south-coast club.

Despite his impressive rise at Rangers and being a key contributor in their journey to the Europa League final, Bassey has struggled in the Netherlands, facing frequent criticism for his performances.

Ajax are reportedly content to let him depart this summer, given a Premier League move would allow them to recoup a similar fee they paid for him.

It remains to be seen whether Ajax are willing to part ways with Bassey after just one season at the club, with the defender under contract until the summer of 2027.

Brighton are yet to sign a defender this summer and have instead bolstered their options in other positions, with goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen the club’s most recent signing after being officially unveiled on Monday, joining from Anderlecht for a reported £17.2m.

The Seagulls broke their transfer record earlier this summer to sign forward Joao Pedro from Watford for around £30m, while midfield duo James Milner and Mahmoud Dahoud have joined the club on free transfers.

Bassey is not the only Ajax player to have caught De Zerbi’s eye, as Brighton have reportedly joined Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea in the race to sign Ghanaian forward Mohammed Kudus.

Bassey indeed built a solid profile for himself after impressing for Glasgow Rangers in the Scottish Cup, the Premiership, and the Europa League.

The 23-year-old shot himself to the top of every major club’s shopping list after he excelled in the Europa League and Scottish Cup finals.

Though Rangers lost to German foes Eintracht Frankfurt in Seville, but the Super Eagles’ defender was outstanding at centre-back, and he subsequently made the competition’s Team of the Season.

A few days later, the versatile defender claimed the Man-of-the-Match award playing at left full-back as the Light Blues defeated Hearts at Hampden to lift the Scottish Cup.

Bassey was a couple of months short of his 18th birthday when he first got the chance to sample Ibrox Stadium and the young Leicester City kid left his mark in more ways than one in that 6-1 rout against the Rangers development squad.

Former Ibrox striker Ryan Hardie felt the full force of his physicality as he was “barged off his feet and the ball”, inside the box by Bassey.

However, it was Bassey’s ability to recover that left Hardie in awe as he stood in the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium to watch his old club in the Europa League final.

Bassey recovered from a slip to make a last-ditch recovery tackle to deny Eintracht Frankfurt’s Rafael Borre.

Hardie was amazed at the 23-year-old’s desire as he kept going to the bitter end despite the stifling Seville heat.

Also, in the stadium that night was another Bassey’s teammate, Conor Lee and he beamed with pride after travelling to Seville join the tens of thousands of Rangers fans to watch his old roommate on one of the biggest stages of all.

Bassey was picked up by the Ibrox side for around £300,000 as they took advantage of the cross-border compensation rule and that is proving a bargain with every man of the match display with some claiming he’s now in the £25 million bracket.

Tee told Record Sport: “I went to watch Calvin in Seville and I was buzzing for him because he’s my best mate.

“It was surreal watching him in Seville on that big stage. It was a proud feeling for us and his family watching.

“I returned to Glasgow and spent some time with him there. There’s no question he’s good enough for the English Premier League but it’s about getting the move that suits him.

“He had all the attributes to be a top player and he’s shown that. I always felt left back was his strongest position because he’s so good at attacking.

“But at the same time, he’s solid defensively and from what I’ve seen of him at centre half this season as well he can do that as well but left back is where I think he’s most effective.”

What however remain to be seen is how well Bassey can adapt to Brighton’s defensive build up if he eventually moves to the Amex.

Waldrum, NFF Conflict Raises Concerns for Super Falcons

Nigeria Women’s National Team head coach Randy Waldrum questions the country’s football governing body, NFF, on the whereabouts of the funds allocated to the team by FIFA to prepare for the World Cup, among other issues the head coach said might affect the team’s chances at the tournament.

With just a few days to the start of the tournament, both parties have continued to be at loggerheads, with the American trainer recently coming out to throw another jab at his employers by questioning the body’s transparency after the federation said they do not have enough funds to execute all the plans the coach has highlighted for the team success at the tournament.

Waldrum has been vocal recently about the federation’s unprofessionalism and inadequacy, raging with words about how NFF has owed him salaries for months and the body’s persistent interference in players’ selection.

The American gaffer has continued to speak his mind about how he is unhappy with how his employers have handled

his contract since taking the Super Falcons job two and a half years ago.

In his recent outburst on ‘On the Whistle’ podcast, Waldrum started with the assumption that in Africa, people believe a team performance should be seen as the coach’s fault rather than looking at the whole working conditions. He emphasised why African people should start taking the country’s federation more accountable for the team’s performance.

He further talked about how disappointed he has not been able to implement his ideas to change the team’s perspective, claiming that NFF has never given him a supporting hand to improve the team’s attitude.

The 66-year-old said that the Super Falcons players show more passion in playing for their clubs than Nigeria because of how they are treated.

Talking about being disappointed about how NFF is not doing the best in dealing with players’ welfare, citing an example at the last WAFCON, where the players boycotted the team’s 3rd-place match after NFF failed to pay the players’

allowances for the group stage matches.

He also talked about how NFF sacked one of his coaching staff for failing to comply with the body’s decision to have a local goalkeeper in his squad for the tournament.

Furthermore, the Falcon’s head coach questioned NFF’s proclamation that the body doesn’t have enough money to execute the plans he had arranged earlier for the team to have a good outing at the World Cup. Claiming he had been informed by a reliable source how FIFA, in October last year, tried to help all the 32 participating teams by giving each team $96000 to prepare for the tournament.

He didn’t stop at not saying how the federation has been contributing to the hindrance of the team’s success ahead of the tournament by claiming that the body has refused to give the players proper welfare, citing other information he got from his source as NFF refusal to seek for a loan help from FIFA that would have provided the team travelling with a business class ticket.

Saudi Clubs Table Big Offer for Iheanacho

Super Eagles and Leicester City striker, Kelechi Iheanacho, is reportedly attracting interest from the Saudi Pro League.

Despite falling out of favour in Brendan Rodgers’ starting line-up, the Nigerian star has emerged as one of the team’s standout performers, playing a crucial role in their fight for Premier League survival. Speculation has arisen from Nigerian media outlets

suggesting that Iheanacho is being targeted for a move to join fellow countrymen Taiwo Awoniyi and Emmanuel Dennis at Nottingham Forest. However, with Nottingham Forest being slow in making transfer decisions, Everton and Besiktas JK have reportedly entered the race to secure the signature of the Nigerian star.

In an intriguing twist, SkySport Germany’s transfer

Yemi Idowu Planning Big for Schools Sports

His passion for grassroots and schools’sports is second to none and in recognition of Yemi Idowu’s unprecedented love for schools’ sports, the Nigeria School Sports Federation (NSSF) onTuesday at the Indoor Sports Hall of the National, Surulere, decided to install the grassroots sports philanthropist per excellence as patron of the federation. For former Sterling Bank chief, the recognition is just a challenge to do more, writes Kunle

The Nigeria School Sports Federation (NSSF) on Tuesday appointed foremost sports philanthropist Yemi Idowu as its patron.

At investiture held at the National Stadium in Lagos, NSSF President, Olabisi Joseph described Idowu as a strong supporter of school sports while his involvement in grassroots sports development endeared him to the federation to consider him as patron.

Rohr Extols Dessers’ Quality, Backs Striker to Perform at Rangers

Former Nigeria manager Gernot Rohr has outlined the qualities that Cyriel Dessers will add to the Glasgow Rangers squad.

Rangers completed the signing of the former Cremonese star on Thursday for a fee of five million euros plus 1.5 million euros in performance-related add-ons.

Rohr handed an international debut to Dessers in a friendly against Tunisia in October 2020,

bringing him on as a 72nd minute substitute to replace Ahmed Musa.

The Tongeren-born striker is eligible to play international football for Belgium, where he was born, as well at Nigeria through his mother, but has pledged his international future to the three-time African champions.

Dessers is not an unknown quantity in European football circles as he was the top scorer in the inaugural Europa

Conference League with 10 goals, and was the top scorer in the Dutch Eredivisie for the 2019-2020 season.

In quotes relayed by Daily Record, Rohr said: “Cyriel Dessers is an all-round striker and a player who is perfect for the modern game.

“He is very mobile around the pitch and he’s very fast. He is strong and powerful in the air, comfortable on the ball and can score goals with both feet.

Ex Man Utd Goalie, Van der Sar in Intensive Care

Former Manchester United and Ajax goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar is being treated in intensive care after suffering a bleed on his brain.

The 52-year-old is reportedly being treated in a hospital in Croatia, where he has been on holiday.

Ajax said the former Nether-

lands international, who won 130 caps for his country, is in a “stable condition”.

“Everyone at Ajax wishes Edwin a speedy recovery,” the Eredivisie club added.

“We’re

thinking of you.”

Van der Sar resigned from his role as Ajax chief executive in May after the

side finished third in the Dutch league and failed to qualify for the Champions League for the first time since 2009.

He retired from playing after leaving United in 2011 before joining the Ajax board in 2012, and later becoming the club’s chief executive in 2016.

On how much pressure the new cap he is wearing now would be on him, the former Sterling Bank man said, “I don’t think the pressure is that much on me alone because we are all jointly involved in it, the press inclusive. The pressure is also on the press to start reporting activities at the school level so that we can start knowing some names of school athletes. We have a lot of good school athletes but they don’t get the deserved mention,” he noted.

Explaining the rationale behind the appointment of Idowu as patron, Joseph said: “As a distinguished sports personality and a prominent figure in the Nigerian sporting landscape, your vast experience in the sports industry, your dedication to promoting sports at the grassroots level, coupled with your philanthropic initiatives, has positively impacted the lives of many aspiring athletes. Your association with our federation will undoubtedly inspire and motivate our young athletes to achieve excellence.”

In his acceptance speech, Idowu said: “I want to thank the NSSF for considering me for this and I believe that we can all work together and improve the fortunes of school sports in Nigeria. Sports is my passion and it has been my ideal to support sports at grassroots level and with this, my involvement in school sports will increase and I believe we have short, medium and long term goals to take our school sports to an enviable position in the world,” Idowu said.

He however, said as a short term goal, a national school football would be staged across the country with the finals taking place at the famous Maracana Stadium in November later this year.

As a patron of NSSF, Joseph said Idowu is expected to be instrumental in shaping the future of sports in Nigeria as well as guide dance and support in developing strategies to enhance the quality of sporting and education programmes; securing sponsorships for events, and expanding the reach of the federation.

Idowu is a patron of sports at the grassroots with more than 18

Nath Boys produced key members of the U17 world cup winning team in 2013 and players like Wilfred Ndidi of English Premier League Leicester City FC.

Despite all his contributions to grassroots and Schools sports, Idowu is still believed to be nowhere close to his father- Chief Nathaniel Idowu’s contribution to sports development in the country.

Asked whether he could ever match the contribution of his father, Nathaniel Idowu to grassroots development, he reacted thus: “I see it as a continuation of what my dad had done in the past, but I don’t want it to look like an individual thing or me. One of the reasons why we’ve tried to be very quiet about it in the past is because we wanted to carry everybody along but now, we are changing strategy. For instance, you need an arrow head to make sure you can push these things farther.”

“I look at it as a continuous exercise and not like a one off and I want Nigeria school sports to grow to the next level and this is one of the reasons why I am doing this,” Idowu assured.

NSSF Partners NOA on Athletes’ Mentoring

The Nigeria School Sport Federation (NSSF) has entered into partnership with the Nigerian Olympians Association (NOA) with the sole aim of mentoring the athletes.

At the signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Lagos on Tuesday July 4, the NSSF President Olabisi Joseph said it behoves on the federation to mould the character of the athletes and to achieve this, collaborating with the Olympians becomes necessary.

“For us at NSSF, one of our aims is to produce a total child not just a sports champion but an individual with impeccable

character outside the field of play.

Our partnership with former and present Olympians are part of the plans we had in stock so that we can involve them in mentoring the young athletes because they were once students’ athletes as well. This partnership is for a long time, and we believe this can help our athletes to work harder and aim high even outside the field of play. We want to ensure that our athletes associate with successful Olympians so that they can learn from them and imbibe the virtues they learnt in their day-to-day activities,” she said.

President of NOA, Olumide

Oyedeji commended NSSF for their giant strides under the leadership of the first female president while pledging their support to the federation.

Oyedeji, former captain of the men’s national basketball team said: “We are excited with this partnership, and we can’t wait to start because for us, there is need to share our experience with some of these upcoming athletes so that they can learn from our experience in their quest for glory in sports. We will surely support NSSF and hope that we can also bring some opportunities to the athletes from IOC in near future,” he said.

Toyota Launches All-New Alphard, Vellfire in Japan

Toyota Motor Corporation (Toyota) has announced that it commenced sales of the all-new Alphard and Vellfire gasoline and hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) versions.

A statement by the automaker said they were launched on June 21, and to further contribute toward carbon neutrality, we also plan to introduce plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) in the future.

Toyota launched the Alphard in 2002 during a wave of minivan popularity; positioned as the ultimate Toyota minivan, it was targeted at customers who appreciated luxury. When the second-generation Alphard was released in 2008, the company developed the Vellfire as a new model for customers seeking greater individuality. In 2015, the third-generation Alphard saw the adoption of a new double wishbone rear suspension for exquisite ride comfort, as well as the introduction of a new top-tier Executive Lounge grade. By seeking even greater luxury, Toyota succeeded in transforming the Alphard and Vellfire from minivans into ultra-spacious luxury saloons with greater customer appeal.

When designing the improved fourth-generation models, the development team discussed the value they wished the Alphard and Vellfire to offer. The conclusion it reached was to use these vehicles to create spaces where all passengers could share consideration and appreciation. They named this “the joy of comfortable mobility” and moved forward with development by adding this with the values they had inherited.

In pursuit of that “joy of comfortable mobility,”

the fourth-generation Alphard and Vellfire have a platform developed anew around the idea of elevating performance to a world standard. As “luxury saloons,” the new Alphard and Vellfire have been improved in terms of basic performance, such as vibration and noise reduction measures, fuel economy, and driving dynamics, while the interior and exterior design, spacious interior and exterior space, and user-friendliness have been enhanced to add value in line with that development concept.

The development team also worked to differentiate more clearly between the Alphard and Vellfire. The Vellfire was assigned an exclusive new Z Premier grade, whose primarily black equipment and aggressive demeanor were imbued with a new sophistication to further underscore its unique exterior. The all-new Vellfire features special tuning to its suspension and an exclusive powertrain unit to enable customers attracted by the uniqueness of the Vellfire to better experience the joy of driving.

Why should you have Third Party Insurance?

In Nigeria, every driver must obtain Third Party Insurance to drive legally. This is the minimum insurance requirement for every motorist in Nigeria. The intent is to ensure that other road users get reasonable compensation (indemnity) for damages to vehicles or injuries caused in the event of an accident.

Should your action on the road result in an accident, the victim (third party) – who could be the driver or passenger(s) – will receive compensation for injuries as well as damage to the vehicle.

Are The Penalties For Traffic Infractions Adequate

Ionce x-rayed punishment accruable to traffic offenders for infractions committed as listed in the offences booklet as provided by the National Road Traffic Regulations, 2012. My position, which has not changed, was that the listed penalties were too lame to deter offenders from what I often refer to as irresponsible driving.

Today, I am compelled to again look at this from a different perspective based on certain developments in some clime and also based on fatality cases being recorded across our roads and the need to tame road users responsible for such avoidable crashes as well as deaths and injuries.

Before I do, I wish to know if you followed the trend of road traffic crashes during the just concluded Eid El Kabir Sallah Celebrations. Did you follow the tragedy that befell the nation during the celebration? If you didn’t, please permit me to refresh your memory with the details of the tragic crashes which occurred.

There were two major crashes. They occurred along the Kabba-Ayere road and Ore-Benin road on 29 and 27 June, 2023. A total of 14 lives were lost as a result of these two crashes. Let me focus on the most tragic in terms of the numbers killed, as well as the number of vehicles involved.

According to reports, the Ore-Benin crash occurred due to the brake failure of a Dangote company truck which crashed onto an Ore-Benin bound bus killing almost all the occupants. The multiple crash also involved a Rio car with a death toll that involved innocent children.

After the crash, there was public outcry. This was not the first crash during any of this year’s festivities. Neither is this the first fatal crash recorded this year. During the Easter celebration, there were three avoidable crashes that occurred at Garaku, Abakaliki, as well as at Ogoja. A total of thirty five lives were lost in

SAFE DRIVING with

results in the death of others. He has since initiated a collaboration to prosecute such drivers while at the same time pursuing a road traffic victim’s compensation bill which hopefully will instill some level of sanity in road usage in different fronts.

First, this strategy will tame drivers whether private or commercial who believe that the available law is a bit docile in addressing bad driving behaviour resulting in deaths and serious injuries. Secondly employers of drivers who hitherto adopted a shabby approach in driver recruitment will henceforth exercise great caution on who is employed as a driver whether for domestic needs or for corporate engagement.

offence. Yet despite the revelation that speed is the number one killer, it carries a paltry sum of ten thousand naira for exceeding approved speed.

Now you understand why people indulge in this craze despite the report by the World Health Organisation and the World Bank. The report notes that an increase in average speed is directly related both to the likelihood of a crash occurring and to the severity of the consequences of the crash. For example, every one percent increase in mean speed, it notes, produces a four percent increase in the fatal crash risk and a three percent increase in the serious crash risk.

those crashes.

The causative factor behind these crashes during the Easter celebration as usual were excessive speeding, loss of control as well as driving against traffic. The story during the Eid El Kabir Sallah celebration was neither different. Although reports claimed that brake failure was responsible, speed was not excluded as the death toll and impact was a function of the speed the vehicles were at before the crash.

I don’t know if you have been a victim or if your loved one has been. I know I have lost friends, colleagues, and loved ones. The irony is that whenever these fatal crashes occur, rarely do you hear of appropriate punitive measures against the responsible driver. Let us take the case of the recent crash. The best that would happen would be some insignificant compensation paid to the families of the deceased. But in actual fact, most crashes resulting in deaths or disabilities are unpunished.

This I hope and pray might stop soon. The current helmsman of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Dauda Ali Biu is an advocate for appropriate punishment for drivers whose irresponsible driving mannerisms

As an interested party, I am a supporter of stringent punishment for traffic infractions as well as stricter punishment for drivers whose actions result in the death of road users or their physical disability. This explains why I was excited when the Establishment Act of the Federal Road Safety Corps 2007 hit the ground.

Specifically, my interest was in the provision contained in the Act where the penalty for causing the death or disability of anyone was a jail term of not exceeding seven years. For clarity, let me quote the sections verbatim to refresh your minds. Section 20, Part person who causes the death of another person by the driving of a motor vehicle on a highway dangerously liable on conviction to imprisonment for a term not exceeding seven years.”

I do not know how many drivers have been handed this heavy punishment for causing the death of another. But while you ponder on this puzzle, please indulge and penalties so you would appreciate my hard-line stance. Speeding which is regarded worldwide as the biggest causative factor in a crash is captured as a traffic

It further states that the death risk for pedestrians hit by car front rises rapidly; 4.5 times from 50 km/h to 65 km/h. In car-to-car side impacts, the fatality risk for car occupants is 85 percent at 65 km/h. The next should be of utmost interest to my friends whose pastime is to drive under the influence as well as speeding at the same time.

The report also identifies the place of those who indulge in driving under the influence of alcohol and other psychoactive substances. Driving under the influence of alcohol and any psychoactive substance or drug increases the risk of a crash that results in death or serious injuries. In the case of drink-driving, the risk of a road traffic crash starts at low levels of Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) and increases significantly when the driver’s BAC is equal to 0.04 g/dl. If this infraction is this dangerous, why then is the penalty just five thousand naira.

In the case of drug-driving, the risk of incurring a road traffic crash is increased to differing degrees depending on the psychoactive drug used. For example, the risk of a fatal crash occurring among those who have used amphetamines is about 5 times the risk of someone who hasn’t. With this kind of a risk, the penalty is lumped up with drink-driving with the same fine as punishment.

Subomi Balogun: Lessons in Humility

Everyone in the business world in Nigeria and thousands of others around the world knew who Otunba Subomi Balogun was. To all these people, he was a larger-than-life character, a titan! Many tributes have been written. Definitely countless tributes chronicling his achievements and impact on society will be written. However, I will focus on an aspect of his character that many would probably not have given much thought to: humility. Humility is not a word often used to describe people who have achieved great things but in the case of Otunba Subomi Balogun I can say from personal experience that he possessed this virtue in a large measure. Humility does not diminish a man but it adds to his stature. This is because it wells from an inner acknowledgement that everything he is and everything he has achieved, was only possible through the Grace of One who is mightier than him and from Whom all blessings flow. This inner acknowledgement then births friendliness, kindness, consideration for others and a genuine love of one’s fellow men. Humility is also inextricably linked to courage, a fact one becomes conscious of through genuine spiritual insight. A human being whose experiences engendered the knowledge and conviction that only the power of God is always at work will have the courage to serve, knowing that come what may, his unshakeable trust in the power of God allows him to fearlessly forge ahead. The German language provides a beautiful illustration of this fact by the construction of the word for humility: ‘Demut’, composed of the words ‘dienen’(to serve) and ‘Mut’ (courage). Humility therefore means: ‘the courage to serve’. When Otunba Balogun got his universal banking licence and had to change the name of his bank from First City Merchant Bank, he replaced the word ‘Merchant’ with ‘Monument’. His explanation at the time? He wished to build

a Monument to the Glory of God. Any wonder then that his endeavour was a great success? My first encounter that I recall having with Otunba Subomi Balogun was sometime in 1978. My departed father’s pioneering real estate project, Agbara Estate on Lagos-Badagry Expressway had just emerged from nearly two years of negotiations with the Ogun State Military Government after the whole estate was compulsorily acquired without notice or compensation. The negotiations resulted in a workable solution, which made it possible for the development of the estate to continue.

BRANDSDAY

Subsequently my father put me in charge of the development company. He directed me to create and execute a viable business plan.

Unknown to me, Otunba Subomi Balogun (who was running City Securities Limited at the time) had been following the developments. One day, he left his office at Primrose Towers on Lagos Island and turned up in my little office on Marine Road Apapa and asked me how he could be of help. I was deeply touched by that experience of a highly respected business

leader visiting a young man in his twenties to offer help! If that is not humility then I do not know what is! In the following years, there were several occasions in which I faced seemingly insoluble crisis and I would pick up the phone to call Otunba Sumobi Balogun. He would immediately invite me over for a discussion. On some occasions, he was able to help directly. Whenever he could not assist, I always left his office feeling lighter, relieved and encouraged after my discussions with him. He did not show any sense of being disturbed at short notice requests to see him either at home or in the office. My wife and I also enjoyed his great hospitality at the Ijebu-Ode home. He played a very prominent role at the wedding of our son to the daughter of his cousin, Olorogun (Dr.) Sonny Kuku. He loved to share his joy of life. The last encounter I had with him was in his suite at the Burj al Arab (a 7-star hotel) in Dubai. As usual, he was very gracious and charming. On that occasion, he revealed his humility again. Quite out of the blues, he expressed his gratitude to the Creator for all the blessings he had received in his life.

He said: “I do not need anything else in life. I only pray that the Lord grants me a healthy old age, maybe up to 90 years.” Well, the Lord answered his prayers. By all accounts, he was healthy to the end and though he had not yet celebrated his 90th birthday, he was called away in his 90th year. May we all learn to emulate his exemplary humility. May the Grace of the Lord continue to guide him as he proceeds on his journey towards the lighter and more joyful planes of God’s wonderful Creation. On his continuing journey may he further experience the truth of this statement: “The knowledge of Creation, spiritual knowledge, is the real purport of all life!” Amen! powerhouse for Nirvana water brand to mark this year’s Children Day the company is reiterating the fact that there’s s subtle link between the purity of the children’s minds and the water.

That is why the campaign is not only instructive but a reminder of the inconvenient truth many have chosen to ignore or pretend it is not there.

In the video, of about two and half minutes, featuring some select children, the opening montage is a gentle reminder of the fact that one in three of Nigerian songs actually promote sex, substance abuse and violence.

The video now shows these kids being asked about the understanding of some lurid songs and their choruses. For instance, the children are asked to say what they understand by “Chop banana”. They innocently say what they understand about that line which in actual sense is a lyric about sex which is actually delivered in a coded language.

They are also asked what they understand by “Riding it” (another sexually explicit lyric) and they give, yet again, very innocent responses.

The video now ends with the need to help these kids protect their innocence.

The campaign is a unique corporate social responsibility which touches an area many, including parents, have chosen to ignore. And that is why the Nirvana brand has created a kind of awakening that is not meant to directly promote the brand but highlight how much it values and cares for the society where the brand sells.

Conceptualized by X3M Ideas, a leading creative agency in Nigeria, the essence of the TVC was captured through a well-selected dramatic personae and a familiar setting to match. In the short video, the creative agency of the consumer goods company, tells an enduring story through exceptionally good Nigerian kids, which is currently trending. Beyond serving as a positioning tool for the brand, the campaign depicts how an unregulated entertainment industry can impact children negatively.

From beginning to the end, the agency brings a human face to the campaign and connects well with an average Nigerian, especially children, teachers and parents.

From any angle one chooses to look

at it, the campaign sends a powerful message which is difficult to ignore. Perhaps the greatest beauty of the commercial was the choice of setting and the Nigerian children which connect easily with the target audience. In a world that moves too fast, the campaign is saying; “safeguarding the innocence of our children must be done at all cost. Let’s all work together to preserve their purity.”

Again, the campaign has simply played up the uniqueness of #teamX3M. It will be recalled that one of the campaigns from the 11-year-old agency behind the commercial was recently adjudged among the best 40 most successful campaigns promoting good causes. In collaboration with the West Africa Research Centre (WARC), 2022 Good Report released its global report and listed the agency.

The Good Report is produced in collaboration with WARC, worldwide authority on marketing effectiveness and publisher of the WARC Creative 100 Rankings, a global benchmark of creative excellence in advertising. Recent records have also shown that the agency occupies a special class among creative agencies in Nigeria and Africa.

Darl Uzu: I Was Born to Make a Difference in the Lives of Others

Founding MD/CEO of Crown Realities Plc C Darl Uzu at 70 says his purpose for living, which is making a difference in the lives of others, is what keeps him going. The real estate icon and lead consultant Enyimba Greenfield City tells Nduka Nwosu that the actualisation of the project and bringing people up to continue from where he would stop, would be his goal in the years ahead

How does it feel to be 70?

I have started to feel old, not physically or mentally. I am sure that happens to a lot of people that started early. I have been on the street on my own since 1988. What happens is that you becomeadinosaur.Allthepeopleyouknowormet inyourlineofbusinesswhenyoustartedareeither deadorretired.Iconnectedwithtopprofessionals in the industry and captains of industry.

For example, I worked as Head of Development for Knight Frank & Rutley in the 80’s. In that capacity I interacted with professionals in the built environment and banking sector of that generation. The known architectural outfits then were James Cubitt, Interstate, Anolabem, Mokwunye, Trigg Brown & Associates, Habitat, Femi Majekodunmi & Associates etc. Notable quantity surveying firms then would include Tillyard & Partners, Femi Popoola & Partners. Mechanical and electrical outfits were GF Appio, OscarFabarthatlaterbecameBiobakuandFabers etc. Structural Engineering, Ette Aro, Ove Arup, Adeyemi, Ogundipe & Partners etc. The guys on theblocknowarenamesyouhavenotheardbefore and only come across on projects. Some of them were not even born by then.

Whatwasitlikegrowingupandwhohasplayed the most pivotal role in your life?

My generation was coming into adolescence when the Nigerian Civil War broke, we were just juniors in secondary school. Our lives before then were normal, we went to school, did well, played in the street, went to Sunday school, feared our parents. One of them must be the “tyrant”. In my case, my father who died during the war. I finished Secondary School after the war, went to Higher School which was inter BA/BSc during our time. Initially, I went to university to study Medicine and endedupwithafirstdegreeinEstateManagement. Estate Management approximated to my passion as a child, I like seeing men in hat standing before what looked like a camera and another holding a long colored and marked pole, after which they make road with caterpillar (dozer). I would have studied Civil Engineering if that was available at Ife at that time. Once I decided not to continue with Medicine providence led me to Ime Ikpo, whom I had known from Oron who was studying Estate Management at Ife. I had seen him with Drawing Boards, surveying around the Biological Science buildings, who romanticized Estate Management as a course and its relationship with Civil Engineering for me.

On hindsight today, I am happy that I studied Estate Management and idolized Prof. Ivoh H. Seeley, who is a Civil Engineer, Builder, Planner and Quantity Surveyor. I strived to be like him by studying for academic and professional degrees across various disciplines in built environment.

I later studied at the Graduate School of Design Harvard University. I taught at the University of Ife for some years and left as Lecturer II, worked with Knight Frank & Rutley Nigeria as Head of Department before setting up Crown Realties Plc with many others. That’s my story.

I think my old lady played the most pivotal role in mylife. Shetaughtushardwork, honestyandfaith pay in the long run. My brother in-law supported me to complete secondary school after the war, before people could find their feet, that’s a pivotal intervention in my life. I have had a lot of influences nationally and internationally,

What goals and aspirations have you set for yourselfgoingforwardsayinthenext30years?

I will be 100 in 30 years, that’s too ambitious. I am rather thinking of the next 10 years by His Grace. After that, I will consider extra time in the

field of life as injury time. If the injury time lasts up to 100 years, who knows, I hope to continue to be useful, if I am physically and mentally able.

I have been abundantly blessed. Like my professor in graduate school once said that we have two important dates in our lives, the day we were born and the day we find out why. I think later in my life, I found out why I was born, and I am pursuing that rigorously. I believe that is why I ended up not as a medical doctor and all my work experience locally and internationally, seem like preparation for the role. I want to use my vast knowledge and experience in urban development, the resources God has given me to make a difference in the lives of people in my region and Nigeria, as a whole.

I have started on the journey in the last six years, and I am almost there. I believe I will consolidate the mission in the next 10 years, within that time develop young people that will carry on my vision when I am no more.

What specific guarding principles have contributed to the success you have made?

First is commitment in whatever you do. So, if I am not passionate about something I do not do it. My passion is highest when what I am doing fills a need.

Second, integrity is the most valuable currency

for success. Once people remark you as a man who keeps his word, they will build a camp around you in good and bad times.

Last but not least is knowledge; you must keep learning continuously from people that have done what you are doing or want to do.

What landmarks are you leaving behind to mark your ascent to the 70th ladder?

I define my success differently. I have four beautiful kids; I am very proud of them. They have graduated from or are in top universities in the US and UK. Not just my biological children but my entire family. They are smart, very well behaved, independent and self-motivated. That’s my most satisfying achievement as the head of my family. That I am a worthy model to them all. Inprofessionalterms, wehavemodestlandmarks that people remember. I think Crown Estate Lekki is noteworthy. It is a 53.7-hectare estate. Also, Crown Court Estates, Mabushi and Durumi in Abuja are luxury residential neighborhoods with prestigious addresses.

We have various isolated developments in Osborne Ikoyi and Oniru in Victoria Island. We planneda30-storeymixedusedevelopmentwith Hyatt International in Victoria Island which was haltedbyvariouslegaldisputesafterwehadspent

over N1 billion over 16 years ago (2007). We paid Lagos State Government almost ₦420 million for just planning approval. The sad story of the project will be for another day too.

Currently, we are driving one of the biggest and most ambitious urban development projects in Africa, Enyimba Economic City, Abia State. It is a 9,464 Hectares self-sustaining city. It is a Special Economic Zone. It is a transformative project for the Region and Nigeria.

Can you explain the concept behind Enyimba EconomicCity(EEC)asahugeindustrialcomplex and modern city?

Enyimba Economic City is a PPP project of our company (Crown Realties Plc) leading the private sector, Abia State Government and the Federal Government of Nigeria. As I said earlier, it is a 9,464 hectares of a Greenfield City with expected growth in manufacturing, logistics, healthcare, entertainment, education, innovation technology hub, commercial, lifestyle residential and aviation sectors.

The concept is to build a global self-sustaining business hub, that will integrate Nigerian businesses(manufacturingandservices)intoregional and global value chain. This we will do by building an economic hub central to the 11 South-East and South-South states linked with high grade access roads, rail, airports and seaports that will transform the region.

The project is fully designed, and the first phase is shovel ready and Afreximbank and First Bank Nigeria are supporting the debt finance that has gone for first approval, elaborate Due Diligence with final Term Sheet signed on March 03, 2023. The financial close is expected soon.

Anotherassociateprojecttothecityisthatweassembled a Consortium, that we lead that included Enyimba Economic City Development Company FZE (Project Lead); CCECC Nigeria Limited, (EPC); Escher Silverman Global, UK (Technical Adviser, Design & Construction Supervision); Insta – Toll, South Africa (Operations and Maintenance) and Afrinvest (WA) Ltd (Financial Advisory).

We tendered for two major access highways connecting the city: Enugu – Port Harcourt A3 (200km) and Onitsha – Owerri – Aba (161km) highways under the Highway Development and ManagementInitiative(HDMI)programofFederal Government of Nigeria. We emerged preferred bidders on April 21, 2022, and we negotiated the concession early this year and signed the Concession Agreements on May 26, 2023.

With the two (2) roads and an 86 km highway from Azumini in Abia State to Obinze in Owerri, Imo State, we have connected the 11 states of Southsouth/Southeast within 90 minutes driving distance and captive population of 60 million people.

After what models was the city designed?

We looked at Dubai, and various new cities in China. I have always given an example of Dubai as a deliberate global city in modern times. As practitioners, we have followed the growth of Dubai, first as an open market at inception to a cutting-edge innovative city of today. Also, China used the concept of “Safe Spaces” to build a modern economy. You will remember that China was a communist economy. What they did was to createcapitalistenclaveswithnewrulesthatallow you to own property and make investments for profit, provide first class infrastructure, training schools for the targeted economic sectors and general enablement to drive regional economic development, diversifications and expansions. We are looking at those examples and others.

MIKEOZEKHOME

GUEST COLUMNIST

For Dokpesi, it Was a Case of Vini, Vidi, Vici

Iam a very sad man as I write this. I have been completely devastated by the ugly and rather sudden death of my elder brother, friend, kinsman, soul mate, client and confidant - High Chief Raymond Anthony Aleogho Ayaoghena Dokpesi, Ph.D, OFR, D.Sc. I have cried myself hoarse. I have never stopped crying. Sludge of tears. Sunken eyes. Bleeding heart. Weak limbs.

I am particularly traumatized because Dr. Dokpesi had called me on Whatsapp at about 12:55am in the morning of 29th May, 2023; the very day he died. He had called me, as always, to discuss friendship, brotherhood and take advice on sundry legal matters. He exuded his usual selfhappiness, vibrancy, sheer éclat and gusto. This, notwithstanding that he had had some health challenges for some time. He had miraculously recovered fully from a stroke.

It was in keeping with his physiotherapist’s professional advice of exercise on a treadmill that he tripped and fell on a fast-rolling treadmill. So, the man died. The gigantic iroko fell. The world has been mourning ever since then. When Raymond called me that early fateful morning of 29th May, 2023, his voice was quite rich, steady and filled with laughter, even guffaw. We taunted and bantered with each other, as we usually did whenever we encountered each other, whether physically on the phone. We exchanged chats and spoke up to 1:50am that fateful day. So, when Chief Tony Akiotu (GMD, DAAR Communications) and Senator Francis Alimhikhena, called me to break the sad news of his sudden death from the very hospital to which he was said to have been rushed, I could not believe my ears. It was simply incredible. It took another communication from his first son, Raymond Dokpesi, Jnr, to shake me from my state of reverie and melt my lethargic world of disbelief or incredulity. Was Dokpesi actually dead? Was the Ezomo of Weppa Wanno Kingdom’s call to me and our discussion up to 1:50am a final farewell from him? Did he have the premonition of his imminent death? I do not know. Gosh!!! One thing is crystal clear to me as I grieve: Agenebode, Weppa- Wanno, Etsako, Afenmailand, Edo State, Nigeria, Africa, the black race, and indeed the whole world, have lost an unforgettable and uncommon shining star and rare gem of inestimable value.

At a mere 71, the Gbobaniyi of Ilawe-Ekiti lived a life of nobility; a life wholly dedicated to the service of God and humanity. His was simply a case of vini, vidi, vici (he came; he saw; he conquered). He impacted the most vulnerable Frantz Fanon’s “Wretched of the Earth” and the hoipolloi, through his many philanthropic and charitable works. In the maritime world, Dokpesi stood tall and resplendent, earning a first class in his Bachelors and Masters, and finally a Ph.D in Maritime Engineering. He helped to design the first carbotage laws of Nigeria.

He floated the first indigenous shipping line in Nigeria - African Ocean Shipping Line.

He later followed it up with Baldok Shipping Line. He was to become the nullus secondus of the media world, where he became a Czar, the Ted Turner of African broadcasting. Dokpesi indeed pioneered and blazed private independent broadcasting of television and radio in Nigeria and Africa, establishing Raypower 100.5 FM Radio and the African Independent Television (AIT) - AIT sharing the African Experience.

The AIT was set up principally to change the western world’s skewed narrative about Africa. Its thematic philosophy was geared towards the promotion of African values, culture and traditions of the black race across the world. By 1999, DAAR launched Nigeria into the Information Super Highway with the DAAR broadband internet services. It was unheard of at that time that a single individual could challenge and break decades of government’s dominance and monopoly of information through radio and television. But, the Araba of Oshoroland and Oghierumhoa of Weppa Wanno Kingdom did just that. A very intelligent, versatile and resourceful person, Dokpesi was at once a deep thinker, philosopher, scientist, artist, dancer, singer, as much as he was a Marine Engineer, humanist, iconoclast and pathfinder.

The Otunba Akorede of the Source, IleIfe, was not only a cultural Ambassador of his people (a traditional chief across all the geo-political divides of Nigeria), he was also a discoverer and adventurist who blazed many trails, broke new grounds and opened up new vistas and horizons for society to flourish. He simply made possible things that appeared ordinarily impossible. As a workaholic, painstaking technocrat and a

human capital builder, the Ezomo had an eye for minute details. He crossed the “t” and dotted the “i”. He did not suffer fools gladly; even as he was patient enough to excuse sheer ignorance and genuine innocent mistakes. He was simply many things rolled into one. Dokpesi was a Jack of all trades and master of all. He was a rolling stone that gathered moss.

Wearing humility like a second skin, the Lintu Bachama (Adamawa State) was an oxymoron. He was shy, reticent and taciturn; yet simultaneously gregarious, luminous and incandescent. In the business world, Dokpesi was a shrewd businessman and calculating entrepreneur. He had the Midas touch. He turned a small DAAR of 1996 into an octopaedal conglomerate that went public into the capital market in 2007. He was a total man who believed and defended the convictions of his belief even if he stood alone. He did not hug limelight or populism, or play to the gallery. At his 70th birthday, he sat on the 8th row at the celebration hall. He spurned all my attempts to get him to the front seat. He said he did not need it. I could not understand but that was Dokpesi for you.

His every day activities were anchored on the platforms of equity, social justice, fairness, egalitarianism and mutual respect for all religions and ethnic groups. He put the female gender first and forward in climes beyond Nigeria. Was this why he married many wives from many races and ethnic groups? I do not know. Or, do you? To say the Oghierumhoa and Ezomo of Weppa Wanno Kingdom was bold, courageous, daring and hardworking is for want of stronger grammatical expressions. His unquantifiable sacrifices globally and across all divides in Nigeria and Africa, made it extremely difficult for anyone to truly describe his essence and personae.

Many saw him as a philanthropist extraordinaire; a Pan-Africanist and a Pan-Nigerian, who believed everyone was entitled to be heard and to air his opinions. Others saw him as an unrepentant investor in human beings. Some others regarded him as an unusual political strategist and tactician, who was consistent throughout his political odyssey and stayed put with his PDP, from its nascent scratch till he breathed his last. Yet, some others swore that the Ozoigbondu I of Adu Achi, Enugu State, was a media mogul; the Ted Turner of Africa. He was the undoubted cultivator of the then nascent Nollywood, Comedy and Music industries, where he discovered and nurtured today’s superstars, giving them the necessary platform to rise and achieve their potentials.

Yet, others would be right to insist that he was simply a passionately prayerful, devout and devoted Christian of the Catholic Faith, who threw his AIT open for daily mass and other church services for more than a decade before he died. Even at that, he did not discriminate against Islam, as he

introduced Jumat services every week. Some people had therefore called him a Chrislem”. The widows cried on his broad shoulders. The orphans leaned on his massive frame. The youths tapped from his generosity and mentorship. The senior citizens depended on him. He gave voice to the voiceless. He energized the weak, helpless and most vulnerable. He gave succour to the deprived and forgotten.

The Zuoje of Liberia was even described by some as an amoeba – a shapeless, formless, unicellular organism that could easily change its shape. Yet, others believed he was an octopus – an eight-limbed, soft-bodied mollusc with bulbous head. These descriptions are all apt because they depended on how he was perceived or seen by different people. The descriptions simply depended on the person or institution involved. They were all right; yet, oxymoronically, all wrong. This is because no one could give a wholistic and complete description of the enigmatic Sardaunna of Kpaduma, Abuja. Dokpesi truly showed that a candle does not lose its flame by lighting other candles.

The name of the Oganigwe Umu Orji Ako Nibo, Anambra State vibrated and reverberated for decades in Nigeria’s political firmament. He epitomized the soul and spirit of DAAR. Not many Nigerians know that DAAR is actually a reversed acronym of his name - RAYMOND ANTHONY ALEOGHO DOKPESI (RAAD); thus DAAR. The Osese of South Uneme, Edo State came; he saw; he conquered (vini; vidi; vici). He ran a very good race. He finished well. Most significantly, he died on Nigeria’s hitherto Democracy Day- May 29, 2023 (before it was changed to June 12). Because he epitomized DEMOCRACY and democratic practices.

At the 2005 National Political Conference, the Vision 2009 and the 2014 National Conference, Dokpesi rolled out the entire DAAR Communications facilities and outfit to drive the conferences, becoming the very linchpin, the backbone and anchor of the entire talk shop. He was everywhere, spreading industry, efficiency and efficacy. He was simply a one-man riot squad. He passionately believed in and propagated a restructured Nigeria where true fiscal federalism thrives, as against the present unitary system we practise. O death, where is thy sting? Death, you shall also die. You just died because you could stop Dokpesi from transmuting from terrestrial mortality to celestial immortality. So, the Ezomo defeated you.

May God grant this legend and colossus eternal repose of his great soul until we meet to part no more. Itseee, Itseee lagi Itseee. May God grant his immediate and extended family, his friends, associates, admirers and loved ones the fortitude to bear this irreparable and irreplaceable loss. Amen. Adieu Ezomo. Farewell Iyokpamhe. Goodbye, Agene 1. Rest in perfect peace till we meet on resurrection day to part no more. Amen; amen; and amen.
