CULTURE CLUB Downtown may be Cleveland’s heart, but University Circle’s Wade Oval is undoubtedly the brains of the operation. This seven-acre oasis of urban greenspace is marked by a bevy of world-class cultural institutions. Cases in point: Severance Hall, home of the vaunted Cleveland Orchestra; Cleveland Museum of Art, which drew record-breaking summer crowds in 2018; and the artifact-packed Cleveland Museum of Natural History. Rounding out the list are the avant-garde Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) Cleveland and the butterfly-ridden Cleveland Botanical Garden. Ready to nerd out on Cleveland nostalgia? The Cleveland History Center is your spot.

ENTERTAINMENT EPICENTER

LAKE ERIE LOVE

Make way, Broadway: Playhouse Square offers a world-class theater experience that rivals anything New York City has to offer—with 10 different performance spaces from the majestic Connor Palace to the intimate Hanna Theatre. With over 20 restaurants within walking distance, dinner-and-a-show has never been more doable, and the bustling arts district’s décor just continues to set the stage. Take it all in via the Playhouse Square gateway sign; glittery old-school marquees; and the larger-than-life, Instagram-ready GE Chandelier suspended above Euclid Avenue. By Jen Jones Donatelli

Did you know that Cleveland is sunnier than Miami from June through September? And Clevelanders make the most of every second. Open-air hangout Edgewater Beach House plays home to the uberpopular Edgewater Live summer beach parties—along with serving up beachside eats and drinks all week long. Edgewater Beach itself is a must-do in Cleveland, with 1,000 feet of swimming access, a fishing pier and dog-friendly vibes. For the chance to set sail on Lake Erie, don’t miss the Goodtime III and Nautica Queen cruise ship experiences. By Jen Jones Donatelli

Or just follow the footsteps of James Beard Award-winning chefs like Michael Symon and Jonathon Sawyer to Ohio City’s legendary West Side Market, where 100+ food vendors serve up pate, pierogis and everything in between. WALKABLE DOWNTOWN CLUSTER Cleveland’s lively city center—boasting restaurants, nightlife and greenspace—is easily accessed on foot from any of the city’s 18 hotels (totaling almost 5,000 rooms). For convenience, 600 Hilton rooms are directly connected to Huntington Convention Center of Cleveland, with 1,000+ additional rooms adjacent between the stately Cleveland Marriott Downtown at Key Tower, ultra-modern The Westin Cleveland Downtown and historic Drury Plaza Hotel Cleveland Downtown. GRAND OPENINGS

One of Cleveland’s newest additions to the skyline—offering Superman-worthy views from its full-service 32nd floor Skybar— is the 600-room Hilton Cleveland Downtown. Connected to the Huntington Convention Center of Cleveland, the Hilton offers more than 46,000 square feet of meeting space (including nine flexible meeting rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows, a 20,825 sq.-ft. Grand Ballroom and a 15,908 sq.-ft. Junior Ballroom). There’s also an underground connector from the nearby Huntington Park Garage to the hotel. By Erin Toohey Naso

Greater Cleveland already boasts nearly 25,000 hotel rooms—and with 17 new properties proposed or in progress, that number continues to rise. Leading the pack are new entries like the 175-room, extended-stay Residence Inn Medical Center in University Circle and the hip 114-room Tru by Hilton in Midtown. Summer 2020 promises more new openings, starting with the newly christened 142-room Hotel Indigo (formerly Hotel Cleveland Gateway) and the 170-room Drury Plaza Hotel at the popping Pinecrest mixed-use district. Also rumored to be joining the Downtown cluster is a 185-room Curio Collection by Hilton hotel, just a home run away from Progressive Field.

LAKE EFFECT

ENTREPRENEUR HUB

Cleveland’s lakefront is steadily springing to life—making the vision of a world-class, mixed-use waterfront a reality. Much of the ongoing development centers on the 28 acres north of FirstEnergy Stadium, home to North Coast Harbor and the new 16-unit Harbor Verandas upscale apartmentswith-a-view. Up next: the 18-acre Harbor View, ushering in five new residential buildings; a hotel; creative and corporate office space; and plenty of retail and dining options. Around the bend in the Flats East Bank, a $150 million, 12-story mixed-use building is in the works featuring a green roof, outdoor pool, eight-screen theater and more.

Since 1990, Tower City Center has been a hub for retail, restaurants, hotels and more in the heart of Downtown. Now an ambitious new plan is envisioning a vibrant version 2.0, aka “City Block.” Reimagined as an entrepreneurial hub, the 350,000-square-foot City Block will be designed for everyone from solopreneurs to super-sized companies—with plenty to attract all types of Clevelanders in between. Picture coworking and corporate office space, restaurants, boutique shopping and a tree-lined park outside on Prospect Ave. Plans also call for a 300-seat auditorium, 30 meeting rooms and rentable event space for up to 1,400 attendees. 2020 VISION With over 92 percent occupancy—and rising—Downtown Cleveland isn’t stopping until it reaches 20,000 residents in 2020. A slew of new residential skyscrapers have popped up to meet the demand, from the 29-story The Beacon (featuring unobstructed city views) to the 34-story The Lumen (Playhouse Square’s future shining star). Buzzworthy restoration projects also abound along Euclid Avenue with sleek new residences in historic former hotels (The Statler), athletic clubs (The Athlon) and bank buildings (The Centennial). Capping off the list is the long-anticipated NuCLEus, a massive mixed-use development planned for the city’s Gateway District. By Jen Jones Donatelli

Cleveland’s Culinary Scene Gets a Boost From New Hotspots By Jen Jones Donatelli

Let’s get to the meat of the matter: this southern Brazilian steakhouse is a carnivore’s delight. With 16 grilled meats on its all-you-can-eat menu, Cello’s Grill offers a fun— and filling—experience for groups of 10 to 250 people in the Warehouse District.

2020 destination Planning Guide

Cleveland’s manufacturing past started with John D. Rockefeller founding Standard Oil of Ohio in 1870. That success has continued to be present in Cleveland, but has evolved in recent years to occupy other highly advanced sectors, including steel producers (Arcelor Mittal, Majestic Steel), aerospace giants (NASA Glenn, Lockheed Martin, Parker Hannifin) and paint manufacturers (Sherwin-Williams). It has been so successful that 16,939 jobs were added between 2010 and 2012. The industry has also seen a 92 percent increase in manufacturing productivity from 1990 to 2015.

HEALTH CARE

technology

Cleveland’s University Circle has the most concentrated area of hospitals and medical research centers in the nation. Cleveland Clinic and University Hospitals alone are the city’s largest employers with a combined workforce of more than 46,000. Cleveland Clinic is one of the most respected hospital systems in the nation and has been recognized as #1 in heart care in the U.S. for 25 years in a row. University Hospitals includes Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital (among the nation’s best) and highly-rated Seidman Cancer Center.

Move over, Silicon Valley: the Rust Belt’s fast become a hub for all things innovation. In 2019, CBRE named Cleveland the fourth fastest-growing U.S. market for tech talent—thanks to an impressive employment growth rate of 17.2 percent in recent years and nearly 10,000 software developers in its workforce. Downtown’s growing cluster of tech-focused companies includes BrandMuscle, Robot & Pencils and TPA Stream, while biotech incubator BioEnterprise and startup accelerator Plug and Play have helped attract cutting-edge startups like BrightEdge. Cleveland has also planted a flag in the emerging blockchain sector as home of the now-annual Blockland Solutions conference. By Annie Zaleski

The Cleveland Advantage

10 Reasons to Meet in Cleveland By Keith Gribbins

1. WORLD-CLASS EXPERIENCES

WITHOUT THE WORLD-CLASS EGO

Downtown Cleveland has everything a meeting needs to succeed — affordable hotels, posh event spaces, famous restaurants, award-winning breweries, national attractions and an everyone’s-welcome attitude. How do we know? The experts have spoken: Cleveland was named to a recent National Geographic Traveler’s “Best of the World” list, noting the city “ripples with new cultural energy.” Speaking of lists, Cleveland’s famed Severance Hall was named one of “North America’s Great Music Halls” by the L.A. Times.

2. HOTELS ARE EVERYWHERE Greater Cleveland as a whole nearly 25,000 guestrooms across all major hotel brands, representing segments from luxury resorts to boutique business accommodations. Downtown Cleveland now offers nearly 5,000 guestrooms in 18 hotels. Add in the flexible meeting spaces and unique dining spots, and these hotels become destinations in themselves. Meeting spaces from 10,000 to 60,000 square feet can range from traditional boardroom seating to AVand tech-enabled theaters, auditoriums and ballrooms.

3. TWO CONVENTION COMPLEXES Cleveland offers two incredible facilities for conventions and tradeshows. The high-tech, eco-engineered Huntington Convention Center of Cleveland hosts world-class confabs, meetings and festivals and connects to a 600room Hilton Cleveland Downtown hotel. The Downtown convention complex is within walking distance of 18 hotels, multiple entertainment districts, sports venues and lakefront attractions. One of the 10 largest convention centers in the country, the I-X Center attracts world-class events with its close proximity to Hopkins Airport and 3,000 hotel rooms nearby.

4. MEMORABLE VENUES,

MEMORABLE MEETINGS

© Rock & Roll Hall of Fame © Larry E. Highbaugh, Jr.

Cleveland is full of dynamic gathering spots that can empower your meeting with a motif. Classy galas or weddings would be perfect for the Cleveland Museum of Art. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has multiple rental options, including the entire museum. The country’s second-largest performing arts center, Playhouse Square, offers nine theaters of various sizes and one outdoor event space for rental. From FirstEnergy Stadium, home of the Cleveland Browns, to House of Blues Cleveland, this city has great venues that offer unforgettable experiences.

5. GETTING HERE IS EASY Cleveland sits within a 500-mile radius of nearly half of the U.S. population — only six hours from cities like Chicago, New York and Philadelphia. Cleveland Hopkins International Airport (CLE) is 12 miles from Downtown and offers an abundance of nonstop flights around the country and internationally via most major carriers. Getting here is super cheap too. CLE offers an abundance of lowcost flights due to new low-cost carriers and increased competition. We are also easily accessible by AMTRAK train, or bus, with both Greyhound and Megabus terminals close to major hotels.

6. GETTING AROUND TOWN IS EASIER The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (RTA) links busy travelers to timely destinations. Four RTA rail lines snake all over the city and to the airport, connecting with nearly 60 different bus routes. For just $5, visitors can snag a one-day Cleveland Pass that allows for unlimited rides. The slick, modern HealthLine Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) secured an Excellence in Engineering award, connecting Downtown hotspots to hospitals and restaurants. Once Downtown, take advantage of scooter rentals and the city’s RTA trolley network — it’s free with a smile.

The Cleveland Advantage 7. OF COURSE, MOST FOLKS JUST WALK Cleveland has one of the most pedestrian-friendly downtown’s in America. Just ask the experts. Cleveland is the 17th most walkable large city in the United States according to the internet site Walk Score. PCMA’s Convene magazine ranked the Huntington Convention Center of Cleveland number four on the list for “Top 15 Convention Centers in Highly Walkable Places.” Strollers can also take solace in the more than 70 Downtown Cleveland Alliance ambassadors that keep Cleveland streets safe and clean, patrolling on foot and bike and acting as mobile concierges.

8. PLENTY OF FOOD AND FUN

© Cody York

From business luncheons to wedding banquets, Northeast Ohio is full of excellent bistros, clubs, cantinas and eateries that specialize in large parties and flavorful food. Food Network-famous chefs like Michael Symon, celebrated restaurants like The Greenhouse Tavern and popular food trucks like the Touch Supper Truck all call Cleveland home. The West Side Market and Great Lakes Brewing Co. are cornerstones in Cleveland’s culinary and craft beer movement, while the JACK Cleveland Casino, Downtown clubs and indie music venues provide a 24/7 nightlife.

9. SPORTS TOWN Cleveland takes its sports oh so seriously. Professional venues (which are rentable) like Progressive Field, FirstEnergy Stadium and Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse are home to venerable franchises like the Cleveland Indians, Cavaliers, Browns, Gladiators and Monsters. Progressive Field recently underwent a $26-million facelift featuring a new home plate club and more CLE-centric concessions, and FirstEnergy Stadium finished a $125-million modernization project. Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse has a fresh look, courtesy of a $185 million expansion and renovation and boasts a new glass atrium, public gathering spaces and dining areas.

10. GREAT LAKES ADVENTURES Summer or winter, Lake Erie provides some of the best opportunities for aquatic entertainment in the United States. Commission a group adventure with BrewBoat CLE at Channel Park Marina on Whiskey Island, enjoy Edgewater Live beach parties on summer Thursdays, or get all wet steelhead fishing in tributaries like Vermilion River, Rocky River and Conneaut Creek. Even Downtown, behind the Rock Hall, Rock and Dock at North Coast Harbor Marina is a 53-slip transient marina, which provides jet skis, kayaks, paddleboats and boards, and boat slips for rent.

Currency Exchange

Clevelander Tips

Cleveland Hopkins International Airport Patrons can exchange currency pre-security on the baggage claim level across from Baggage Carousel 9 or post-security inside Concourse C Security Checkpoint, between Gates C-2 and C-3.

In Cleveland, “soda” is referred to as “pop.” If you hear “Burning River” or “Holy Moses,” it’s just someone ordering a craft beer made locally by Great Lakes Brewing Company. Many Clevelanders identify themselves as being either eastsiders or westsiders (the division being the Cuyahoga River), but all seem to claim downtown.

History Cleveland has a proud history that is 224 years in the making. General Moses Cleaveland of the Connecticut Land Company came to the Western Reserve and founded the City of Cleveland in 1796. The name changed to its current spelling in 1831 when the “a” was dropped in order to fit the city’s name on a newspaper masthead.

Fun Facts Cleveland is the home of Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, the creators of Superman, as well as a filming location for major motion pictures, including “A Christmas Story,” “The Avengers” and “Captain America 2: The Winter Soldier.” Oscar winners Paul Newman and Halle Berry hail from the region. So does Hall of Fame guitarist, Joe Walsh, who honed his craft with The James Gang in the 1970s with the popular single “Funk #49.” LifeSavers candy, the modern golf ball and the electric streetlight are all Cleveland firsts invented right here in Cleveland.

Location + Population Cleveland, located in the Eastern Standard Time Zone (EST) in the State of Ohio within Cuyahoga County, is on the southern shore of Lake Erie, part of the Great Lakes Region. It is the 18th largest metro area and 15th largest consumer market in the United States with nearly 2 million residents in Greater Cleveland metro and nearly 400,000 in the City of Cleveland.

Business Cleveland has a $236 billion annual economy and is home to a number of companies that are on Fortune magazine’s list of the top 500 industrial and top 500 service companies in the United States, including KeyCorp, Sherwin-Williams, Eaton Corp and Progressive Insurance.

Want to get a good look at Cleveland? Visit the 42nd floor Terminal Tower Observation Deck for 360° views that extend 30 miles. Open on Saturdays and Sundays (April to mid-December) for 25-minute, self-guided tours from 12-4pm. Visit eventbrite.com for $5 tickets and schedule.

EAST SIXTH STREET

A MODERN UPDATE FOR TODAY The Cleveland Public Auditorium has hosted it all — Republican National Conventions, Cleveland State University basketball games, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Inductions, and even The Beatles. The multi-purpose performing arts, entertainment, and exposition facility opened in 1922, but recently received $5 million in upgrades to the electrical, plumbing, and mechanical infrastructure.

PERFORMING ARTS & FLEXIBLE EXHIBIT AREAS Built in the grand opera tradition, Cleveland’s “classic auditorium” also has a conference center with 15 meeting rooms (accommodating 10 to 700), while the performing arts area features a 10,000seat “Public Hall” auditorium, 3,000-seat Cleveland Music Hall, and 600-seat Little Theater. The exhibition facilities accommodates up to 150 exhibits with 29,700 square feet of space and the option to divide that space into four. Food service has the capacity to serve up to 2,000 people, from banquet to buffet.

DOWNTOWN LOCATION The complex is connected to the Huntington Convention Center of Cleveland via underground tunnel and convenient to hotels, restaurants, public transportation and 5,600 parking spaces.

(I-X ) Center POWERFUL IMPRESSIONS

EASE OF ACCESS

NEW BUSINESS

With more than 1.5 million consumers attending events each year, the I-X Center offers a unique opportunity for companies looking to reach new business with digital advertising. The ability to deliver high-definition advertising across a network of state-ofthe-art LED screens strategically placed for maximum impact makes the venue’s digital assets appealing. “This advertising opportunity has gained a significant amount of interest and provides great impact for both local and national advertisers,” says Matt Moos, Director of Corporate Partnerships.

Accessibility at the I-X Center speaks for itself. As an ideal location for any event, the I-X Center is situated adjacent to Cleveland Hopkins International Airport and surrounded by five major interstates. The unique ability to easily accommodate any size show makes the I-X Center one of a kind. Surrounding the building are 30 truck docks, 7 oversized drive-in doors and on-site parking ready to accommodate 7,200 vehicles for added convenience. This ease of access makes the I-X Center unmatched when it comes to a smooth, uncomplicated process during show move in/out.

New business is top of mind for Cleveland’s I-X Center. In 2019, seasoned veteran, Lisa Reau, was promoted to Director of Business Development & Events for Cleveland’s largest convention center. Throughout her first year in this new position, Reau successfully increased new business with events like the Dru Joyce Classic, Ohio Cannabis Health Summit, Northern Ohio Teachers of Mathematics Conference and Heartland Travel Showcase. “There’s a new approach to conducting business at the I-X Center and it’s attracting top planners and producers worldwide,” says Reau.
