Down the aisle
The accepted career for women in the Victorian era was marriage. To get ready for courtship and marriage a girl was groomed like a racehorse. In addition to being able to sing, play an instrument and speak a little French or Italian, the qualities a young Victorian gentlewoman needed were to be innocent, virtuous, biddable, dutiful and be ignorant of intellectual opinion. Yeah, right.

Are you going to eat that?
The Victorians ate virtually every part of an animal. This is not entirely creepy if you are a food fanatic but for most people, the idea of supping on a bowl of brains and heart is not appealing. Another famous dish from the Victorian era was turtle soup. The turtle was prized above all for its green jelly-like fat which was used to flavor the soup made from the long-boiled stringy flesh of the animal. 17

Stay healthy
In a time when one in four patients died after surgery, you were very lucky in Victorian times to have a good doctor with a clean operating theatre. There was no anesthesia, no painkillers for after, and no electric equipment to reduce the duration of an operation. Victorian surgery wasn’t just creepy, it was outright horrific. 35

It was the Victorians who first invented afternoon tea. This was because the evening meal was eaten later than in previous periods and people found they needed a light meal in the late afternoon. The evening meal was eaten around 8 or even 9 p.m.

During the summer of 1893, the Cape May Wave reported that night time bathing was becoming quite the rage. People felt that bathing at night exceeded the benefits of daytime bathing, without its burning sun and sand. Even bath house operators were revising their hours of operation to accommodate their evening customers.

Capturing Cape May’s Architecture: The Making of a National Historic Landmark Open daily through Oct. 31: See calendar for times • FREE ADMISSION In the early ’70s, a team from the Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) produced pen and ink drawings of this seaside town’s most significant historic structures. The drawings enabled Cape May to become a National Historic Landmark and a national tourist destination. Now, for the first time, these intricate drawings and the stories of the architects whose hands created them are on exhibit at the Carroll Gallery. Curator Karen Fox, author of “The Chalfonte,” provides visitors with a unique look at how a small band of preservationists saved not only the buildings, but a culture of the past creating a future.

Friends of the Physick Estate
The Emlen Physick Estate has long been a “must see” destination in Cape May, as well as an outstanding educational experience for local schoolchildren. Help us to enhance this jewel of Victoriana and expand its outreach by joining the Friends of the Physick Estate.
Friends of the Cape May Lighthouse
The Friends of the Cape May Lighthouse seek to raise awareness of the historic significance and value of this Guardian of the Sea. Renew your passion for this majestic sentinel by becoming a Friend of the Cape May Lighthouse.
