Cape May Presbyterian Church
You are welcome to worship with us any Sunday!
In the remaining weeks of November, we have two services: 9am traditional service with organ and choir; 11am jazz service with our ensemble
From Dec. 22 until the summer of 2025, we will have one worship service at 10am, with a variety of music styles. We will continue to be on Facebook Live for that service; videos can be seen any time on YouTube.
Jazz Vespers happens on the third Sunday at 3pm, for a mere $10 donation. Join us on Nov. 17 to hear the live tunes of The Hot Club of Philadelphia, and then again on Dec. 15 for a return of the Christmas Jazz Trio, featuring a children’s choir from local schools! On the first three Mondays of December, a diverse and feisty group of us will be meeting for Bible Study from 4-5pm, with both in-person and via Zoom attendees, to discuss the birth story of all birth stories—the one in Luke’s gospel.
Enrich your Christmas holiday with our Path of Peace. We light up our corner of Cape May with around 500 mason jar luminaries, each one in honor or in memory of a loved one. Call the church to dedicate one jar for $7 or three for $20. Then come and see your chosen names, amid the glowing path, any time between Dec. 22-29. You can find us any time on our website, Facebook, Instagram, and Youtube, or by sending us an email or giving us a call.

Victorian Christmas Traditions
Queen Victoria was very involved with her servants, and she took a maternal interest in their well-being. There were well over 100 servants, and on Christmas Eve the royal family would join them in the servants’ hall to share gifts. Gifts could include books, clothing or food. The queen would also give gifts to her close personal servants, like her dressers and pages. This act of gratitude was so important to the queen that she did it before she and her family opened their own presents.

Victorian Christmas Traditions
One of the most significant seasonal traditions to emerge from the Victorian era is the Christmas card. It was Sir Henry Cole who introduced the idea of the Christmas card in 1843. Cole commissioned the artist J.C. Horsley to design a festive scene for his seasonal greeting cards and had 1,000 printed – those he didn’t use himself were sold to the public. Later in the century, improvements to the chromolithographic printing process made buying and sending Christmas cards affordable for everyone.

Victorian Christmas Traditions
Queen Victoria’s Christmas was not complete without a little tipple, and it’s very possible that she would have laced her pudding with a drop of alcohol, too. Christmas puddings feature regularly on the royal dessert menu at the castle, and is again referenced by Dickens as a treat enjoyed by regular Victorians. It was often served with a kind of sauce, perhaps an English custard or crème anglaise.

Victorian Christmas Traditions
Giving gifts at Christmas wasn’t a tradition the Victorians introduced, but they certainly made it a part of their family festivities. Presents were shared on the evening of Christmas Eve, rather than Christmas Day as is traditional in the 21st century.

Victorian Christmas Traditions
The Victorian age placed great importance on family, so it follows that Christmas was celebrated at home. For many, the new railway networks made this possible. Those who had left the countryside to seek work in cities could return home for Christmas and spend their precious days off with loved ones. Family life was epitomized by the popular Queen Victoria, her husband Albert and their nine children.

Victorian Christmas Traditions
The brilliant scientist Michael Faraday inaugurated the tradition of Christmas lectures on science in 1825, a tradition that continues to this day. During the Victorian period, however, many of these lectures and demonstrations at other institutions were more spectacle than scholarship. The Adelaide Gallery, for example, paired performances of Handel’s Messiah with fantastical electrical displays, giant projections of microscopic beings, or demonstrations of laughing gas.

Victorian Christmas Traditions
Victorian parlour games were slightly more enthusiastic, dangerous and painful than your usual game of Charades. One favorite was “Snapdragon,” a simple game of setting alight a bowl of raisins and brandy. Once the lights were turned off, the competitors had to grab and eat the lit raisins without causing injury or fire. Probably very difficult with all the layers they used to wear. Another is “Are you there Moriarty?,” a game where two blindfolded players would try to batter each other over the head with a folded newspaper. Nothing says Merry Christmas like a concussion.

Victorian Christmas Traditions
As well as trees, the Victorians decorated their house with things such as holly and ivy. This could be seen as an attempt to bring the natural world into their homes in the wake of the Industrial Revolution. Putting a star or angel on top of the Christmas tree is also a tradition that began in Victorian times.

Victorian Christmas Traditions
Vegetables took on a new role of importance in meals for both rich folks, as well as the lower classes. Roasted and boiled Potatoes, Sprouts, Cabbage, Parsnips and Carrots began to appear for Christmas dinner on Victorian tables. Wealthy folks would serve unseasonal vegetables such as Asparagus, Beans and Tomatoes to demonstrate the skill of their garden staff.

Victorian Christmas Traditions
The Victorians re-popularized the centuries-old tradition of Christmas caroling with new and newly translated songs that encouraged participation. Christmas carols started off as interpretations of the original Christmas story that were sung in various rhythms. Most songs emphasized Christian beliefs but were meant to spread joy and cheer around the holiday. During the Victorian era, many new carols were written and a heavier focus was placed on cheer and feasting, rather than religion.

Victorian Christmas Traditions
In 1848, a British confectioner, Tom Smith, devised the idea of a Christmas Cracker after seeing Parisian sugared almonds sold in twists. During the Victorian period the idea was adapted and improved, with sweets replaced with paper hats and small gifts. Near the end of the century, no Victorian Christmas would be complete without crackers, with almost 11 million manufactured in 1891.

Victorian Christmas Traditions
Christmas pantomimes are still enormously popular in England, but in Victorian times, a different sort of comic play was the toast of the Christmas season: St. George and the Dragon. In the play, the hero knight (St. George) slays the dragon, but audiences are also treated to other odd characters, including a comic doctor who revives injured parties, and Father Christmas, “personified as a grotesque old man,” who did not give out presents. “I am not come here to laugh or to jeer, but for a pocketful of money, and a skinful of beer,” goes one version of the custom.

Victorian Christmas Traditions
The idea of an indoor Christmas tree originated in Germany, where Prince Albert was born. In 1848, the Illustrated London News published a drawing of the royal family celebrating around a tree bedecked with ornaments. The popularity of decorated Christmas trees grew quickly, and with it came a market for tree ornaments in bright colors and reflective materials that would shimmer and glitter in the candlelight.

Indoor decorations were mostly handmade, and ivy leaves sewn onto strips of ribbon were the most popular Victorian decoration. Mistletoe balls were commonly hung in the middle of a room or hallway or over a threshold at holiday parties.

Victorian Christmas Traditions
The word ‘wassail’ was a toast and comes from the Old Norse ‘ves heill’ meaning ‘be well and in good health.’ But by the Victorian period, wassailers were carolling groups who went around the town and would be rewarded with a hot, spiced drink, known as ‘wassail.’
