LESSONS OF HISTORY

Sunday, Oct. 13: 5pm

Cape May Convention Hall, 714 Beach Ave. Presented by Dr. Craig L. Symonds

In this 12th year, Cape May MAC welcomes Dr. Craig L. Symonds to Cape May Convention Hall to present “The War Comes Home to America: U-boats off the Mid-Atlantic.” German U-boats made the mid-Atlantic one of the most dangerous places on earth in the first few months of 1942. The carnage they inflicted was out of proportion to their numbers and ships went down all along the coast from New York to Florida. How the United States dealt with this menace is one of the great stories of naval and U.S. history. Dr. Symonds taught history at the U.S. Naval Academy for 30 years and has earned numerous awards for his teaching and research. He is the author of 17 books translated into six languages and holds the Naval Historical Foundation Dudley Knox medal for lifetime achievement and the Pritzker Military Museum and Library Pritzker Prize for Lifetime Achievement in Military Writing. Tickets are limited. Advance reservations strongly recommended.

Martie was Wonderful!

My mom and I went on a tour of the historic district. There was an option to do the combo tour as well. Our tour guide Martie was EXCELLENT! Not only did we learn about the history of the different areas of town and the beautiful architecture, but she shared personal anecdotes of her childhood growing up in the area, which was delightful. It was so fun to learn about the city from someone who has seen in grow and change throughout the years.” -- Tripadvisor Review

This was a fantastic experience for our family’s first trip to Cape May. Ellie is a top notch guide. Her knowledge and love for homes of Cape May made the tour engaging and entertaining. We learned so much and grew in our admiration of the town and its residents. The the tour was worth every penny for our family of seven.” -- Tripadvisor Review

The house is beautifully staged and it’s clear that the preservationists have maintained the estate with great integrity. We learned a lot, not just about the house and the family, but also about Cape May in general. It’s fascinating to me that the beauty that we take for granted in Cape May was only one legislative decision away from possibly being bulldozed and commercialized.”

Cape May Lighthouse

All the experience was wonderful. The Cape May Lighthouse is very nice, easy to climb, enough space in stairs and the view is amazing. The people who work there are very nice, too. Outside, there’s a beautiful nature preserve with excellent trails to walk around and enjoy nature....and the beach right there. All in one package. Amazing experience.”

Historic District Trolley Tour

Loved hearing about the history of this area. Quiet town, lots of homes dating back to the 1700-1800’s. This was a great trolley tour. Our guide was great and a wealth of information. I’m sorry I forgot her name, didn’t make note of it. Seems like most of the guides are older ladies and they were great!! We got off to take our house tour. Got back on a different trolley after the house tour. They did a little more sightseeing then returned us to our starting place across from Washington Street Shopping area.”

HALLOWEEN IN CAPE MAY

CRAIG McMANUS on the Ghosts of Cape May

“Our existence and a ghost’s existence can be much more entwined than we think—and we may never even realize it. The living and the dead move within the same space, but seldom collide. When I work as a Medium, I have to move my consciousness into the ghost realm, the plane where ghosts exist, in order to read their thoughts.”

Walk the streets with the Ghost Writer

Dare to walk the haunted streets of Victorian Cape May on a Ghost Walk with Craig McManus. Your guide, psychic medium and ghost writer Craig McManus, will point out the houses where he has sensed paranormal activity (which may

or may not manifest itself). Saturday, Oct. 12 at 6pm and 8pm. Tickets are $35 for adults and $30 for children (ages 3-12) and space is limited. For more information, call 609-884-5404 or order online at www.capemaymac.org.

Cherry House Haunting Tales Tour

637 Hughes St. Saturdays in October: 7pm

The Cherry House, built in 1849 on one of Cape May’s oldest residential streets has been the subject of paranormal investigations and recordings of unusual experiences. Homeowners Beth and Frank Acker, along with their dog, Bella, will relate the outcome of investigations at the house and the occurrences they’ve experienced on this guided 60-minute tour of the first and second floors.

The origins of trick or treat

In this country, trick-or-treating has been a Halloween tradition since the late 1920s. In Britain and Ireland, the tradition of going house-to-house collecting food at Halloween goes back at least as far as the 16th century, as had the of people wearing costumes at Halloween. In 19th century Britain and Ireland, there are many accounts of people going house-to-house in costume at Halloween, reciting verses in exchange for food, and sometimes warning of misfortune if they were not welcomed. While going house-to-house in costume has remained popular among Scots and Irish, the custom of saying “trick or treat” has only recently become common. The activity is prevalent in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland, Puerto Rico, and northwestern and central Mexico.

12 TIPS FOR A DELIGHTFUL CHRISTMAS CANDLELIGHT HOUSE TOUR

For 51 years, visitors have come to Cape May, N.J. in December to partake in a timehonored and beloved holiday tradition — the Christmas Candlelight House Tours. On three evenings in 2024, Saturdays, Dec. 7, 14 and 21, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., a dozen-plus hotels, bed & breakfast inns, private homes and churches open their doors and welcome you to step inside.

Here are 12 ways you can prepare to make the most of your evening:

1. Manage Your Expectations. Don’t expect to see every property on the tour. All properties on tour are open for three hours and there are 12–20 properties on average to choose from. Aim to see and enjoy six properties and you won’t be disappointed or unprepared if there are long lines.

2. Everyone Should be Prepared to Walk. Shuttles will not be offered in 2024. Instead, an Express Trolley will travel between the Emlen Physick Estate and the Angel of the Sea, and another between the Emlen Physick Estate and the West Cape May CVS area. The majority of properties are clustered within a 20-minute walk (a 3/4-square-mile area) in the Historic District. (For guests who cannot walk or choose not to walk, see #12 below).

3. Purchase Tickets in Advance. Avoid the rush and avoid disappointment. Purchase online, by phone 609–884–5404 or in person at the Emlen Physick Estate, 1048 Washington St. Groups of 20 or more receive a discounted rate when booking ahead. Call Susan Gibson well in advance of your tour at 609–224–6030 for more information.

4. Obtain your Map and Wristband in Advance. When you purchase your ticket, you will get a map with all the properties listed and a wristband you show to be admitted to each property. If purchasing in person, you will be given a map and wristband right away. If purchasing online or by phone, you will need to obtain your map and wristband in advance at Hill House office at the Emlen Physick Estate, 1048 Washington St. Please plan ahead and leave yourself plenty of extra time.

5. Review your Map Ahead of Time. Or Not. This is a self-guided walking tour, so you decide which properties to visit, and the norm is that you will likely not be able to see all of them, as noted above. Maps will be available online approximately a week in advance of the tour for downloading in pdf format.

Check the web site as your tour approaches for a list of properties for each evening.

6. Parking, Starting Point. Parking is a challenge but here are some helpful hints: 1. Emlen Physick Estate. The lot fills by 5pm. 2. Cape May Elementary School on Lafayette Street. This is a city parking lot with limited spots that might be available in the evening. 3. Acme lot at Lafayette and Ocean Streets. This is a private paid parking lot. 4. Street parking on the east side of town near Angel of the Sea on Trenton Avenue: New Jersey Avenue to Cape May Avenue, Philadelphia to Pittsburgh Avenue. Beach Avenue.

7. Restrooms are marked on your map. Check the web site closer to the date of your tour!

8. Bring a Flashlight! A flashlight or your mobile device will illuminate the map as you walk and navigate.

9. Etiquette Inside. Please dispose of food and drinks prior to entering a property or trolley. Please ask permission before taking photographs inside properties.

10. The Colonial House Museum. Some people have trouble finding The Colonial House Museum at 653½ Washington St. It is tiny, not visible from the sidewalk and located directly behind The Hugh Boutique B&B, 653 Washington St. (City Hall is on your left). Face the inn and walk around the right along the parking lot.

11. Safety and Help Along the Way. For your safety, and the safety of others, please observe the following: Stay Alert — Be Aware of automobile traffic around you — Cross the Streets at Intersections only — Walk on Sidewalks only — Do Not Walk in Roadways. If you need assistance during your tour, look for individuals with illuminated vests who can help direct you.

12. Consider a Holiday Lights Trolley Ride. If walking is a challenge for you, consider an alternative: the Holiday Lights Trolley Ride. These half-hour trolley rides will be running the same evenings. We have an accessible trolley available with advance notice. Walkers or strollers are not permitted on board trolleys but may be stowed at the Washington Street Mall Information Booth where the Holiday Lights Trolley Rides depart. Take note: these rides tend to sell out quickly, so we suggest purchasing your tickets well in advance.
