Down the aisle

The accepted career for women in the Victorian era was marriage. To get ready for courtship and marriage a girl was groomed like a racehorse. In addition to being able to sing, play an instrument and speak a little French or Italian, the qualities a young Victorian gentlewoman needed were to be innocent, virtuous, biddable, dutiful and be ignorant of intellectual opinion. Yeah, right. 17

A new mystery for 2018!

The rooms of the 1879 Emlen Physick Estate provide the perfect stage for this “whodunnit” mystery!

A local suffragette takes her mission too far when she breaks into the mayor’s house with her group of protesters. When the police arrive expecting a simple case of trespassing, everyone discovers that something much more sinister has happened. Somewhere beneath all of the family secrets and political agendas lies a motive, and somewhere in the house lurks a killer. Can you find out who it is and bring them to justice before they strike again? Accessible with advance notice.

Capturing Cape May’s Architecture: The Making of a National Historic Landmark Open daily through Oct. 31: See calendar for times • FREE ADMISSION In the early ’70s, a team from the Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) produced pen and ink drawings of this seaside town’s most significant historic structures. The drawings enabled Cape May to become a National Historic Landmark and a national tourist destination. Now, for the first time, these intricate drawings and the stories of the architects whose hands created them are on exhibit at the Carroll Gallery. Curator Karen Fox, author of “The Chalfonte,” provides visitors with a unique look at how a small band of preservationists saved not only the buildings, but a culture of the past creating a future. To view online, visit www.capemaymac.org/carroll-gallery-exhibits.

In the Victorian era, photography was young and extremely costly. When a loved one died, their relatives would sometimes have a photograph taken of the corpse in a pose – oftentimes with other members of the family. For the vast majority of Victorians, this was the only time they would be photographed. In these post-mortem photographs, the effect of life was sometimes enhanced by either propping the subject’s eyes open or painting pupils onto the photographic print, and many early images have a rosy tint added to the cheeks of the corpse. Adults were more commonly posed in chairs or even braced on specially-designed frames. 28

Are you going to eat that?

The Victorians ate virtually every part of an animal. This is not entirely creepy if you are a food fanatic but for most people, the idea of supping on a bowl of brains and heart is not appealing. Another famous dish from the Victorian era was turtle soup. The turtle was prized above all for its green jelly-like fat which was used to flavor the soup made from the long-boiled stringy flesh of the animal.

What was life like in the 1890s? For one thing, there were strict rules governing bathing attire.   An 1897 ordinance threatened fines or jail time to those who dared to venture on the beach between the hours of 4 a.m. and 11 p.m. without proper attire. The same ordinance forbade taking a horse or mule into the water during certain times. The ordinance did say, however, that “buff bathing” was allowed on a certain section of beach up until 6 a.m. 38

BEAT THE HEAT!

COOL ideas for HOT

summer days!

HISTORY IS COOL! And so is the AIRCONDITIONED Emlen Physick Estate. Cape May’s only Victorian house museum is a great way to beat the heat and see what life was like more than130 years ago for this Cape May family. We offer both guided and self-guided tours, plus a new self-guided audio tour, so no matter what you’ve planned for the day, you can include a visit to this COOL estate. Includes a visit to the air-conditioned Carroll Gallery in the Carriage House to see the current exhibit “Capturing Cape May’s Architecture.” -- See pages 6 & 7 ICED TEA and other refreshments are a great way to cool off, and it’s only one of the things to love about lunch or afternoon tea at the Carriage House Cafe & Tearoom, on the grounds of the Physick Estate. Dine indoors in the air-conditioned horse stalls. Enjoy a traditional Tea Luncheon or heartier fare from the cafe menu, as well as an afternoon tea, or a bottle of wine from Cape May Winery. -- See page 81 GHOSTS ARE COOL...and Cape May is one of the most haunted places you’ll ever visit. After the sun goes down, you’ll hear all about them around town, at the Physick Estate and the Cape May Lighthouse, as well as the historic (and haunted) Cherry House. -- See pages 19 & 55 COOL AT THE TOP. You may warm up as you climb the 199 steps to the top of the Cape May Lighthouse, but it’s worth it for the cool breezes at the top, and the view is the coolest. Also visit the World War II Lookout Tower... not as many steps to the top and still keeps the family out of the sun! -- See pages 8 & 9

MYSTERY IS COOL. It is when it’s a performance of Clueless at the Physick Estate. The action unfolds around you in the rooms of the AIR-CONDITIONED Physick Estate and we haven’t got a clue whodunnit.... (we do, but we’re not telling!) -- See page 22 EVENING TROLLEYS ARE COOL. After the sun goes down, you can see the town in the cool of the evening by hopping on one of MAC’s red trolleys. There are some cool trolley tours and rides that you shouldn’t miss, from ghosts to rides along gaslit streets, and plenty more. -- See evening calendar listings GET WATER COOLED...Board the Cape May Whale Watcher for a cool ride around the Cape. You’ll learn about our maritime history and see dolphins frolicking in the wake as you enjoy the cool ocean breezes. -- See pages 41 & 68 HOUSES ARE COOL! Visit The Angel of the Sea, with its beautiful architecture and a really cool story about its history as a “mobile” home. -- See page 33 PICNICS are cool and you’ll find plenty of tables on the shady grounds of the Physick Estate. Get some take-out from the Carriage House Cafe & Tearoom, a bottle of wine from Cape May Winery, and chill out. Take a stroll and learn about the Estate on the Physick Estate Scavenger Hunt. -- See pages 31 & 81

Sure cure for sunburn

During the summer of 1893, the Cape May Wave reported that night time bathing was becoming quite the rage. People felt that bathing at night exceeded the benefits of daytime bathing, without its burning sun and sand. Even bath house operators were revising their hours of operation to accommodate their evening customers.

GHOSTS

IN VICTORIAN CAPE MAY Cape May is reputedly one of America’s most haunted towns, and nowhere else is this reputation so well-earned as at the 1879 Emlen Physick Estate, Cape May’s original haunted house. For years, MAC’s staffers had felt they were not alone in the house, but it was not until psychic medium Craig McManus began his investigations into the town’s paranormal activities that those who were not regular members of the MAC staff were identified. McManus, who has written several books about Cape May’s hauntings and has documented spirit activity at dozens of the town’s quaint B&B inns and hotel properties, has spent a great deal of time at the Physick house and has identified several of its residents. Most prominent among them is Dr. Physick’s Aunt Emilie, who has great energy and a vibrant smile, according to McManus. “This is a ghost who knows everything that is going on in her home,” McManus wrote. He also explained that, after her death, Emilie had stayed on to watch over the house, which had fallen into disrepair before its restoration began in 1970. Dr. Physick’s mother, Frances Ralston, is no longer in the house, according to McManus, but the strong presence she exerted in her lifetime is still felt as “residual energy,” especially in her bedroom on the second floor, the paranormal hot spot of the home. Another resident is Isabelle, or Bella, Mrs. Ralston’s invalid younger sister who died in 1883, shortly after the family

moved into the mansion. Among the unique spirits that McManus has reported are several of Dr. Physick’s dogs. He encountered several in the house on his first visit, and one romping through the gardens on a later visit. Apparently, there is some disturbance when the dogs are about, because they were never allowed in the house by Mrs. Ralston. Aunt Emilie, however, had a softer spot for Dr. Physick’s canine companions, and prepared their dinners in the estate’s kitchen, and would let them in the house when Mrs. Ralston was absent. The estate’s Carriage House also has its resident spirit, which has been heard by several of the MAC staff whose offices are on the building’s second floor. McManus said this could be one of the servants, possibly a groomsman or driver. One of MAC’s most popular ghost tours is Seance at the Physick Estate, where McManus leads a group of 25 people through the house to commune with its spirit residents. “Cape May’s original haunted house never disappoints,” McManus wrote about a recent tour. “It was one of the best haunting experiences I have had in my career! “There are very few real haunted mansions of this caliber that are open to the public,” he wrote in his book. “If you love the paranormal, this is a must visit!”

Among the unique spirits that McManus has reported are several of Dr. Physick’s dogs.
