Explore the two floors of the 1879 Physick House Museum on your own and linger in the rooms that intrigue you, on this self‐guided tour experience. Photos welcome. Interpretive displays tell you about important features in each room. A costumed interpreter is available for questions. Tour also included admission to the “Cape May’s Stormy Past” exhibit in the Carriage House’s Carroll Gallery (see page 31). Last admission is at 3:45pm; the museum closes at 4:15pm. Victorians took mourning seriously. Women often wore mourning rings which were usually made from onyx or jet and featured hair from the deceased person. Some would even bottle their mourning tears. Often, women were hired to stand at a bachelor’s grave site to cry inconsolably so that he seemed adored. When someone passed the family would often have a photograph taken of the body. The less fortunate

Poorhouses in Victorian England were government-run facilities where the poor, infirm, or mentally ill could live. They were usually filthy and full to the brim with society’s unwanted people. At the time, poverty was seen as dishonorable, as it came from a lack of the moral virtue of industriousness. Many of the people who lived in the poorhouses were required to work to contribute to the cost of their board and it was not uncommon for whole families to live together with other families in the communal environment.

Gingerbread relief

The Stick Style architecture of the Emlen Physick Estate is characterized by wood construction with boxy projections, such as bays, wings and towers, a grid work of raised boards, called stick work, overlaying the clapboarded walls, and simple decorative elements, often geometric in design. These elements are in marked contrast with the ornate gingerbread trim found on many other Cape May houses. 28

Watch what you say

The completion of the first telephone system in the spring of 1895 certainly made things easier. With a manager and two operators, the exchange was open from 6 a.m. to midnight, with a pay station in West Cape May and another at Schellenger’s Landing. It cost 10 cents to use the phone. Phones could be put in private homes for $16 per year, and in business places for $30 per year. Of course, if a subscriber used profane language while speaking on the phone, it would be removed immediately. 29

During the era symbolized by the reign of British monarch Queen Victoria, women did not have suffrage rights, the right to sue, or the right to own property. At the same time, women participated in the paid workforce in increasing numbers following the Industrial Revolution. Feminist ideas spread among the educated female middle classes, discriminatory laws were repealed, and the women’s suffrage movement gained momentum in the last years of the Victorian Era. 30

Who worked at the Lighthouse?

The Lighthouse was staffed by keepers who worked for the U.S. Lighthouse Service. Cape May’s lighthouse generally had one head keeper and two assistants. They carried the oil to the top of the tower every day to power the light, and kept the lens apparatus clean and in working order. Keepers’ pay averaged $600 a year around the turn of the 20th century. 33

Busy hands

So many women’s activities of the mid and late 19th century served to show that they were middle class. Making artificial flowers was one of these. Both time-consuming and useless, making artificial flowers proved that your husband’s income made it possible for you to do no housework. Along with disabling clothing and countless crafts, flower-making was a visible sign of middle-class-ness. The conventions of the time made women almost literally prisoners in their parlors. 36

The Victorians ate virtually every part of an animal. This is not entirely creepy if you are a food fanatic but for most people, the idea of supping on a bowl of brains and heart is not appealing. Another famous dish from the Victorian era was turtle soup. The turtle was prized above all for its green jelly-like fat which was used to flavor the soup made from the long-boiled stringy flesh of the animal. 37

The Victorian period gave us such great works of terror as Dracula, and the Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Even the Americans got in on the act with Edgar Allen Poe producing some of the greatest Gothic literature of the time. The Victorians knew how to frighten people and they knew how to do it in grand style. These works still form the basis of much modern horror and their power to thrill has not dwindled in the least. 40

In a city once ravaged by fire, one of the duties of the building inspector in Cape May during the 1890s was to see to it that every owner or occupant of a house had their chimney swept during the month of May each and every year, under penalty of a $5 to $50 fine.

This highly illustrated lecture tells you about Naval Air Stations at Cape May and Wildwood and the canal and also highlights Coast Guard beach patrols, German prisoners held here, submarine warfare off our coast and civil defense efforts.
