It was the Victorian period that gave us such great works of terror as Dracula, and the Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Even the Americans got in on the act with Edgar Allen Poe producing some of the greatest Gothic literature of the time. The Victorians knew how to frighten people and they knew how to do it in grand style. These works still form the basis of much modern horror and their power to thrill has not dwindled in the least.

Beating the heat Victorian Architects designed homes to maximize airflow in hopes that the occupants would be kept cool. High ceilings were not just decorative but also allowed a space for hot air to go. Coupled with large pocket windows that rose all the way into the walls above, high ceilings promoted airflow that kept air moving through each room. Adjoining rooms were yet another way to improve air circulation, as you’ll see in the Physick House. A wide covered porch also helped to keep the Victorian house comfortable. As air passed under the covered porch, it was shielded enough from the sun to drop a few degrees. By the time the air passed into the house, it was much cooler than the air outside. Shutters and shades were also employed to keep the house cool. Louvered shutters, like we find on the Physick House, allowed air to pass through but kept out the heat of the sun. Often, shutters and shades were opened and closed throughout the day as the sun moved around the house. Many a maid was probably kept busy as she traveled from room to room adjusting the shutters to keep out the sun. 32

Stay healthy
In a time when one in four patients died after surgery, you were very lucky in Victorian times to have a good doctor with a clean operating theatre. There was no anesthesia, no painkillers for after, and no electric equipment to reduce the duration of an operation. Victorian surgery wasn’t just creepy, it was outright horrific.

Say cheese
In the Victorian era, photography was young and extremely costly. When a loved one died, their relatives would sometimes have a photograph taken of the corpse in a pose – oftentimes with other members of the family. For the vast majority of Victorians, this was the only time they would be photographed. In these post-mortem photographs, the effect of life was sometimes enhanced by either propping the subject’s eyes open or painting pupils onto the photographic print, and many early images have a rosy tint added to the cheeks of the corpse. Adults were more commonly posed in chairs or even braced on specially-designed frames. 35

The Cape May Lighthouse actually has two separate walls. The outside wall is cone-shaped, and is 3 feet 10 inches thick at the bottom, and 1 foot 6 inches thick at the top. The inside wall is a cylinder with 8.5-inch thick walls which support the spiral staircase. The walls were designed to withstand winds several times above hurricane force.

BEAT THE HEAT!
COOL ideas for HOT
summer days!
HISTORY IS COOL! And so is the air-conditioned Emlen Physick Estate. Cape May’s only Victorian house museum is a great way to beat the heat and see what life was like 130 years ago for this Cape May family. This year, we offer new self-guided tours, in addition to our guided tours, so no matter what you’ve planned for the day, you can include a visit to this COOL estate. Includes a visit to the air-conditioned Carroll Gallery in the Carriage House to see the current exhibit “Tommy’s Folly.” -- See page 6-7 ICED TEA and other refreshments are a great way to cool off, and it’s only one of the things to love about lunch or afternoon tea at the Carriage House Cafe & Tearoom, on the grounds of the Physick Estate. Dine indoors in the air-conditioned horse stalls. Enjoy a traditional Tea Luncheon or heartier fare from the cafe menu, as well as an afternoon tea. -- See page 77 GHOSTS ARE COOL...and Cape May is one of the most haunted places you’ll ever visit. After the sun goes down, you’ll hear all about them around town, at the Physick Estate and the Cape May Lighthouse, too. -- See page 29 COOL AT THE TOP. You may warm up as you climb the 199 steps to the top of the Cape May Lighthouse, but it’s worth it for the cool breezes at the top, and the view is the coolest. Also visit the World War II Lookout Tower... not as many steps to the top and still keeps the family out of the sun! -- See pages 8 & 9 MYSTERY IS COOL. It is when it’s a performance of Clueless at the Physick Estate. The action unfolds around you in the
rooms of the air-conditioned Physick Estate and we haven’t got a clue whodunnit.... (we do, but we’re not telling!) -- See page 15 EVENING TROLLEYS ARE COOL. After the sun goes down, you can see the town in the cool of the evening by hopping on one of MAC’s red trolleys. There are some cool trolley tours and rides that you shouldn’t miss, from ghosts to rides along gaslit streets, and plenty more. -- See evening calendar listings GET WATER COOLED...Board the Cape May Whale Watcher for a cool ride around the Cape. You’ll learn about our maritime history and see dolphins frolicking in the wake as you enjoy the cool ocean breezes. -- See pages 38 & 49 HOUSES ARE COOL! Visit The Angel of the Sea, with its beautiful architecture and a really cool story about its history as a “mobile” home. -- See page 27 PICNICS are cool and you’ll find plenty of tables on the shady grounds of the Physick Estate. Get some take-out from the Carriage House Cafe & Tearoom and chill out. Take a stroll and learn about the Estate on the new Physick Estate Scavenger Hunt. -- See page 42
Just because it’s a scorcher out there is no reason to miss some of Cape May’s most popular tours and attractions... and you don’t even have to worry about wearing sunscreen!!!

What’s for dinner? Victorians valued good cooking and food. However, there were great differences between what the rich and poorer people ate. The unemployed, and others with little money, survived on little more than potato parings, rotten vegetable refuse and scraps. Those on a slightly higher wage could occasionally purchase some bacon, cheese or sausage and workers in better-paid jobs had more choice and more wholesome food. Meal time provided the opportunity for the rich to display their wealth. This was done through rich foods, use of fine cutlery, china and servants. At the start of the period, French cuisine was in fashion, with as many as 20 dishes served at the same time in two great courses.
