The Stick Style architecture of the Emlen Physick Estate is characterized by wood construction with boxy projections, such as bays, wings and towers, a grid work of raised boards, called stick work, overlaying the clapboarded walls, and simple decorative elements, often geometric in design. These elements are in marked contrast with the ornate gingerbread trim found on many other Cape May houses.

The war to end all wars
Friends of the World War II Lookout Tower present
MAC
Cape May in World War I
SATURDAY, JAN. 14: 1PM Cape May Lutheran Church, 509 Pittsburgh Ave.
“The Great War” to those who experienced it, World War I was supposed to be “the war to end all wars.” It didn’t. But it did end the Victorian Era. The year 2017 is the 100th anniversary of the US entering the war. Join the Friends of the Tower for a richly illustrated presentation on its causes and results and Cape May’s little known role in it. View rare pictures of Camp Wissahickon, Navy Section Base Nine, the Bethleham Loading Co. and the Hotel Cape May as a military hospital. Light refreshments will be served. Admisson is free to members of Friends of the WW II Tower, MAC Tower Observers and children 12 and under. Admission for the general public is $5
For information, call 609-884-5404 or 800-275-4278 or visit www.capemaymac.org

Whose lighthouse is it?
The State of New Jersey owns the Cape May Lighthouse, but the Coast Guard maintains the beacon apparatus and emergency generator. The Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts (MAC) in Cape May leases the Lighthouse from the State with the mission of restoring the structure and operating it as a historic site. 35

Creepy stories
It was the Victorian period that gave us such great works of terror as Dracula, and the Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Even the Americans got in on the act with Edgar Allen Poe producing some of the greatest Gothic literature of the time. The Victorians knew how to frighten people and they knew how to do it in grand style. These works still form the basis of much modern horror and their power to thrill has not dwindled in the least. 39

Lighthouse restoration
The last keeper of the lighthouse retired in the 1930s. After that, the beacon was automated, and the United States Coast Guard maintained the workings of the light. In the 1980s, the Coast Guard began to lease historic lighthouses to local preservation groups who could preserve and restore these important structures. In December, 1986, the Lighthouse was leased to the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts (MAC). MAC supervised the restoration of the lighthouse windows and doors, the addition of safety improvements, the restoration of the oil house which is at the entrance to the lighthouse grounds, the restoration of the lantern roof and windows, the interior walls and staircase, and the grounds. The lighthouse has also been re-painted in its original color scheme, in which the tower is a light beige and the lantern is red. Nearly 100 thousand visitors a year now experience a visit to the top of the lighthouse, participating in a century old rite of a visit to the Jersey Shore. 55

You go, girl!
The status of women in the
same time, women participated in the paid workforce in increasing numbers following the Industrial Revolution. Feminist ideas spread among the educated female middle classes, discriminatory laws were repealed, and the women’s suffrage movement gained momentum in the last years of the Victorian Era.
Victorian era is often seen as an illustration of the striking discrepancy between national power and wealth and what many, then and now, consider appalling social conditions. During the era symbolized by the reign of British monarch Queen Victoria, women did not have suffrage rights, the right to sue, or the right to own property. At the 56

Queen Victoria was a prolific writer, writing about 2,500 words every day during her adult life. Although some of her diaries were accidentally destroyed, many of these 122 volumes survive to this day. Victoria did not like smoking and had ‘no smoking’ signs placed in almost all the rooms in the palace. She also did not like using the newly invented telephone. She enjoyed looking at art and was quite a talented artist herself. On several birthdays and anniversaries, she gave her husband a painting depicting nude, or near nude women. Queen Victoria was devastated when her husband died in December, 1861. From that day on, she wore only black and was in a permanent state of mourning. During her reign, there were at least seven attempts to kill her. Several of the would be assassins were sent to a mental asylum and were declared insane. Queen Victoria could speak several languages, including Urdu and Hindustani. Although she never visited Canada, she declared Ottawa to be the capital of the province. Although she treated her staff well, she did not care for Prime Minister Gladstone. Often, she would remain standing so that he had to stand too, despite the fact that he 58

Down the aisle
The accepted career for women was marriage. To get ready for courtship and marriage a girl was groomed like a racehorse. In addition to being able to sing, play an instrument and speak a little French or Italian, the qualities a young Victorian gentlewoman needed were to be innocent, virtuous, biddable, dutiful and be ignorant of intellectual opinion. Until late in the century in 1887 a married woman could own no property. Then in 1887, the Married Woman’s Property Act gave women rights to own her own property. Previously her property, frequently inherited from her family, belonged to her husband on marriage. She became the chattel of the man. During this era if a wife separated from her husband she had no rights of access to see her children. A divorced woman had no chance of acceptance in society again. 63

Guardian of the shore Fire Control Tower No. 23 is New Jersey’s last freestanding World War II tower, part of the immense Harbor Defense of the Delaware system known as Fort Miles. Built in 1942, the Tower was one of 15 towers that helped aim batteries of coastal artillery, stretching from North Wildwood, N.J. to Bethany Beach, DE. Four were in Cape May County —the towers located in North Wildwood and Wildwood Crest were torn down and a third tower is located inside Cape May’s Grand Hotel, Beach and Philadelphia avenues. Fire Control Tower No. 23 is on land now owned by Cape May Point State Park and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on Nov. 17, 2003. The tower underwent major restoration by the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC), and opened to the public in 2009. 69

Hope you like dogs!
Among the unique spirits reported at the Physick Estate by psychic medium Craig McManus are several of Dr. Physick’s dogs. They have been seen the house and one romping through the gardens. Apparently, there is some disturbance when the dogs are about, because they were never allowed in the house by Mrs. Ralston. Aunt Emilie, however, had a softer spot for Dr. Physick’s canine companions, and prepared their dinners in the estate’s kitchen, and would let them in the house when Mrs. Ralston was absent. 72

Stay healthy
In a time when one in four patients died after surgery, you were very lucky in Victorian times to have a good doctor with a clean operating theatre. There was no anesthesia, no painkillers for after, and no electric equipment to reduce the duration of an operation. Victorian surgery wasn’t just creepy, it was outright horrific. 73

Bucket brigade
The Cape May Lighthouse was originally staffed by keepers who worked for the U.S. Lighthouse Service. Cape May’s lighthouse generally had one head keeper and two assistants. They carried oil to the top of the tower every day to power the light, and kept the lens apparatus clean and in working order. Keepers’ pay averaged $600 a year around the turn of the 20th century.
