In the Victorian era, photography was young and extremely costly. When a loved one died, their relatives would sometimes have a photograph taken of the corpse in a pose – oftentimes with other members of the family. For the vast majority of Victorians, this was the only time they would be photographed. In these post-mortem photographs, the effect of life was sometimes enhanced by either propping the subject’s eyes open or painting pupils onto the photographic print, and many early images have a rosy tint added to the cheeks of the corpse. Adults were more commonly posed in chairs or even braced on specially-designed frames. 7

The Victorians ate virtually every part of an animal. This is not entirely creepy if you are a food fanatic but for most people, the idea of supping on a bowl of brains and heart is not appealing. Another famous dish from the Victorian era was turtle soup. The turtle was prized above all for its green jelly-like fat which was used to flavor the soup made from the long-boiled stringy flesh of the animal. 16

The accepted career for women in the Victorian era was marriage. To get ready for courtship and marriage a girl was groomed like a racehorse. In addition to being able to sing, play an instrument and speak a little French or Italian, the qualities a young Victorian gentlewoman needed were to be innocent, virtuous, biddable, dutiful and be ignorant of intellectual opinion. Yeah, right.

A new look for Cape May

The Physick House made news in Cape May in 1879 because it was different from any other house in town. It was constructed in the avant garde Stick Style, while most cottages in town were still being built in the more conservative Italianate, Gothic and Mansard styles. The design of the house is attributed to Frank Furness, who designed more than 600 buildings in the greater Philadelphia area in the late-19th and early-20th centuries. Now recognized as one of this country’s greatest Victorian architects, Furness fell out of favor by the mid-20th century, and many of his buildings, as well as his office, were destroyed. While no document exists to prove the Furness attribution, historians concur that he was the only architect who could possibly have designed the Physick House. Such trademark features as the greatly oversized corbelled (upside down) chimneys, jerkinhead dormers, and porch brackets appear in many other Furness buildings of the period. 37

FRANKLIN STREET SCHOOL From Segregation to Unification Jan. 13 - April 15, 2018

From its opening in 1928, the Franklin Street School was a symbol of segregation and separation. It stood as a reminder of a racial divide, even after school integration in 1948. For two decades the Center for Community Arts has worked to preserve, stabilize and restore the School. The exhibit will include photographs, artifacts and recorded oral and video histories to chronicle the history of the School, the initial efforts to preserve and rehabilitate the building, and plans for the building’s expansion and completion as a community center for the people of Cape Island.

Open Saturdays starting Jan.13, plus Sunday & Monday, February 18 & 19 Daily beginning March 19 through April 15 See calendar for times • FREE ADMISSION EXHIBIT OPENING Monday, January 15: 4pm

Say cheese

In the Victorian era, photography was young and extremely costly. When a loved one died, their relatives would sometimes have a photograph taken of the corpse in a pose – oftentimes with other members of the family. For the vast majority of Victorians, this was the only time they would be photographed. In these post-mortem photographs, the effect of life was sometimes enhanced by either propping the subject’s eyes open or painting pupils onto the photographic print, and many early images have a rosy tint added to the cheeks of the corpse. Adults were more commonly posed in chairs or even braced on specially-designed frames.

Hitting the gym

Like today, many a Victorian man or woman thought working out and trying to get the perfect body would make life lovely. Victorians were often obsessive about health, fitness and beauty — the ones who could afford to spend many hours bodybuilding did so. This would also include many new dietary fads and exercise routines that would come and go just as they do these days. The idea was to eventually achieve the “Grecian ideal,” the perfect physique.

Who knew?

Queen Victoria was a prolific writer, writing about 2,500 words every day during her adult life. Although some of her diaries were accidentally destroyed, many of these 122 volumes survive to this day.   Victoria did not like smoking and had ‘no smoking’ signs placed in almost all the rooms in the palace. She also did not like using the newly invented telephone.   She enjoyed looking at art and was quite a talented artist herself. On several birthdays and anniversaries, she gave her husband a painting depicting nude, or near nude women.   Queen Victoria was devastated when her husband died in December, 1861. From that day on, she wore only black and was in a permanent state of mourning.   During her reign, there were at least seven attempts to kill her. Several of the would be assassins were sent to a mental asylum and were declared insane. 62

Hope you like dogs!

Among the unique spirits reported at the Physick Estate by psychic medium Craig McManus are several of Dr. Physick’s dogs. They have been seen the house and one romping through the gardens. Apparently, there is some disturbance when the dogs are about, because they were never allowed in the house by Mrs. Ralston. Aunt Emilie, however, had a softer spot for Dr. Physick’s canine companions, and prepared their dinners in the estate’s kitchen, and would let them in the house when Mrs. Ralston was absent. 67

Busy hands

So many women’s activities of the mid and late 19th century served to show that they were middle class. Making artificial flowers was one of these. Both time-consuming and useless, making artificial flowers proved that your husband’s income made it possible for you to do no housework. Along with disabling clothing and countless crafts, flower-making was a visible sign of middle-class-ness. The conventions of the time made women almost literally prisoners in their parlors. 70

The Cape May Lighthouse was originally staffed by keepers who worked for the U.S. Lighthouse Service. Cape May’s lighthouse generally had one head keeper and two assistants. They carried oil to the top of the tower every day to power the light, and kept the lens apparatus clean and in working order. Keepers’ pay averaged $600 a year around the turn of the 20th century.

Sure cure for sunburn

During the summer of 1893, the Cape May Wave reported that night time bathing was becoming quite the rage. People felt that bathing at night exceeded the benefits of daytime bathing, without its burning sun and sand. Even bath house operators were revising their hours of operation to accommodate their evening customers. 79

In a city once ravaged by fire, one of the duties of the building inspector in Cape May during the 1890s was to see to it that every owner or occupant of a house had their chimney swept during the month of May each and every year, under penalty of a $5 to $50 fine. 82

The Victorian period gave us such great works of terror as Dracula, and the Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Even the Americans got in on the act with Edgar Allen Poe producing some of the greatest Gothic literature of the time. The Victorians knew how to frighten people and they knew how to do it in grand style. These works still form the basis of much modern horror and their power to thrill has not dwindled in the least. 83
