Also visit the Estate’s Carriage House to see the “Tommy’s Folly” exhibit in the Carroll Gallery, through Oct. 10. (see page 37). The first floor of the Physick house museum is fully accessible.

What the Heck is that Thing? Victorian Household Innovations

New theme for 2016! The Victorians used tools in the home that would bewilder the 21st century householder. Such gizmos as button hooks and magic lanterns had a specific use for Victorians, but today are obsolete. Learn about curious gadgets like these, how they worked, and why they were as essential to Victorians as smart phones are today.

Guided Physick Estate Tours take approximately 45 minutes and conclude with the Tommy’s Folly exhibit in the Carriage House’s Carroll Gallery. (see page 37). The first floor of the house museum is fully accessible.

SELF-GUIDED PHYSICK ESTATE TOUR Tuesdays & Thursdays: 11am-4pm Wednesdays: 1pm-4pm

This experience allows you to spend as much time as you like, and linger at will, in the museum rooms where interpretive staff and volunteers will be available to answer your questions and discuss Victorian life. In addition, expect to New meet a “historic” member of the Physick family, or one of their domestic staff, as you wander through Dr. Physick’s home. Tour also included adin mission to the current exhibit in the Carriage House’s Carroll Gallery (see ! 6 1 0 2 page 37). Last admission is at 3:45pm; the museum closes at 4:15pm. PHYSICK ESTATE CHILDREN’S TOUR Mondays: 10:30am

Youngsters will see what life was like more than 100 years ago on a tour of this 1879 house museum (see page 6), geared especially for 5-10 year-olds. Find out how kids (and adults) lived without electricity and many of the everyday things we take for granted today. Tours last about 30 minutes. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Sorry, we can’t accommodate strollers. All tickets $8

In the Victorian era, photography was young and extremely costly. When a loved one died, their relatives would sometimes have a photograph taken of the corpse in a pose – oftentimes with other members of the family. For the vast majority of Victorians, this was the only time they would be photographed. In these post-mortem photographs, the effect of life was sometimes enhanced by either propping the subject’s eyes open or painting pupils onto the photographic print, and many early images have a rosy tint added to the cheeks of the corpse. Adults were more commonly posed in chairs or even braced on specially-designed frames. 28

Victorians liked toys with long names, like phenakistoscope! This was a spinning-picture toy. It made it seem you were looking at moving pictures. Old pictures make them look really serious, but Victorians also liked silly rhymes, like the nonsense verses of Edward Lear, who wrote The Owl and the Pussycat.

Previously her property, frequently inherited from her family, belonged to her husband on marriage. She became the chattel of the man. What’s for dinner? Victorians valued good cooking and food. However, there were great differences between what the rich and poorer people ate. The unemployed, and others with little money, survived on little more than potato parings, rotten vegetable refuse and scraps. Those on a slightly higher wage could occasionally purchase some bacon, cheese or sausage and workers in better-paid jobs had more choice and more wholesome food. Meal time provided the opportunity for the rich to display their wealth. This was done through rich foods, use of fine cutlery, china and servants. At the start of the period, French cuisine was in fashion, with as many as 20 dishes served at the same time in two great courses.
