Stay healthy
In a time when one in four patients died after surgery, you were very lucky in Victorian times to have a good doctor with a clean operating theatre. There was no anesthesia, no painkillers for after, and no electric equipment to reduce the duration of an operation. Victorian surgery wasn’t just creepy, it was outright horrific. 18

A new mystery for 2018!
The rooms of the 1879 Emlen Physick Estate provide the perfect stage for this “whodunnit” mystery!
A local suffragette takes her mission too far when she breaks into the mayor’s house with her group of protesters. When the police arrive expecting a simple case of trespassing, everyone discovers that something much more sinister has happened. Somewhere beneath all of the family secrets and political agendas lies a motive, and somewhere in the house lurks a killer. Can you find out who it is and bring them to justice before they strike again? Accessible with advance notice.

In the Victorian era, photography was young and extremely costly. When a loved one died, their relatives would sometimes have a photograph taken of the corpse in a pose – oftentimes with other members of the family. For the vast majority of Victorians, this was the only time they would be photographed. In these post-mortem photographs, the effect of life was sometimes enhanced by either propping the subject’s eyes open or painting pupils onto the photographic print, and many early images have a rosy tint added to the cheeks of the corpse. Adults were more commonly posed in chairs or even braced on specially-designed frames. 28

Capturing Cape May’s Architecture: The Making of a National Historic Landmark Open daily through Oct. 31: See calendar for times • FREE ADMISSION In the early ’70s, a team from the Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) produced pen and ink drawings of this seaside town’s most significant historic structures. The drawings enabled Cape May to become a National Historic Landmark and a national tourist destination. Now, for the first time, these intricate drawings and the stories of the architects whose hands created them are on exhibit at the Carroll Gallery. Curator Karen Fox, author of “The Chalfonte,” provides visitors with a unique look at how a small band of preservationists saved not only the buildings, but a culture of the past creating a future.

Are you going to eat that?
The Victorians ate virtually every part of an animal. This is not entirely creepy if you are a food fanatic but for most people, the idea of supping on a bowl of brains and heart is not appealing. Another famous dish from the Victorian era was turtle soup. The turtle was prized above all for its green jelly-like fat which was used to flavor the soup made from the long-boiled stringy flesh of the animal.

BEAT THE HEAT!
COOL ideas for HOT
summer days!
HISTORY IS COOL! And so is the AIRCONDITIONED Emlen Physick Estate. Cape May’s only Victorian house museum is a great way to beat the heat and see what life was like more than130 years ago for this Cape May family. We offer both guided and self-guided tours, plus a new self-guided audio tour, so no matter what you’ve planned for the day, you can include a visit to this COOL estate. Includes a visit to the air-conditioned Carroll Gallery in the Carriage House to see the current exhibit “Capturing Cape May’s Architecture.” -- See page 6-7 ICED TEA and other refreshments are a great way to cool off, and it’s only one of the things to love about lunch or afternoon tea at the Carriage House Cafe & Tearoom, on the grounds of the Physick Estate. Dine indoors in the air-conditioned horse stalls. Enjoy a traditional Tea Luncheon or heartier fare from the cafe menu, as well as an afternoon tea, or a bottle of wine from Cape May Winery. -- See page 83 GHOSTS ARE COOL...and Cape May is one of the most haunted places you’ll ever visit. After the sun goes down, you’ll hear all about them around town, at the Physick Estate and the Cape May Lighthouse, as well as the historic (and haunted) Cherry House. -- See pages 19, 55 COOL AT THE TOP. You may warm up as you climb the 199 steps to the top of the Cape May Lighthouse, but it’s worth it for the cool breezes at the top, and the view is the coolest. Also visit the World War II Lookout Tower... not as many steps to the top and still keeps the family out of the sun! -- See pages 8 & 9
MYSTERY IS COOL. It is when it’s a performance of Clueless at the Physick Estate. The action unfolds around you in the rooms of the AIR-CONDITIONED Physick Estate and we haven’t got a clue whodunnit.... (we do, but we’re not telling!) -- See page 22 EVENING TROLLEYS ARE COOL. After the sun goes down, you can see the town in the cool of the evening by hopping on one of MAC’s red trolleys. There are some cool trolley tours and rides that you shouldn’t miss, from ghosts to rides along gaslit streets, and plenty more. -- See evening calendar listings GET WATER COOLED...Board the Cape May Whale Watcher for a cool ride around the Cape. You’ll learn about our maritime history and see dolphins frolicking in the wake as you enjoy the cool ocean breezes. -- See pages 47, 68 HOUSES ARE COOL! Visit The Angel of the Sea, with its beautiful architecture and a really cool story about its history as a “mobile” home. -- See page 30 PICNICS are cool and you’ll find plenty of tables on the shady grounds of the Physick Estate. Get some take-out from the Carriage House Cafe & Tearoom, a bottle of wine from Cape May Winery, and chill out. Take a stroll and learn about the Estate on the Physick Estate Scavenger Hunt. -- See pages 41, 83

The accepted career for women in the Victorian era was marriage. To get ready for courtship and marriage a girl was groomed like a racehorse. In addition to being able to sing, play an instrument and speak a little French or Italian, the qualities a young Victorian gentlewoman needed were to be innocent, virtuous, biddable, dutiful and be ignorant of intellectual opinion. Yeah, right. 38

Creepy Victorian food
Victorians ate virtually every part of an animal, supping on delicacies likes brains and hearts. Another famous dish from the Victorian era was turtle soup. The turtle was prized above all for its green jellylike fat which was used to flavor the soup made from the long-boiled stringy flesh of the creature.

Sure cure for sunburn
During the summer of 1893, the Cape May Wave reported that night time bathing was becoming quite the rage. People felt that bathing at night exceeded the benefits of daytime bathing, without its burning sun and sand. Even bath house operators were revising their hours of operation to accommodate their evening customers.

What a Queen! Queen Victoria was a prolific writer, writing about 2,500 words every day during her adult life. Although some of her diaries were accidentally destroyed, many of these 122 volumes survive to this day. Victoria did not like smoking and had ‘no smoking’ signs placed in almost all the rooms in the palace. She also did not like using the newly invented telephone. She enjoyed looking at art and was quite a talented artist herself. On several birthdays and anniversaries, she gave her husband a painting depicting nude, or near nude women. Queen Victoria was devastated when her husband died in December,
1861. From that day on, she wore only black and was in a permanent state of mourning. During her reign, there were at least seven attempts to kill her. Several of the would-be assassins were sent to a mental asylum and were declared insane. Queen Victoria could speak several languages, including Urdu and Hindustani. Although she never visited Canada, she declared Ottawa to be the capital of the province. Although she treated her staff well, she did not care for Prime Minister Gladstone. Often, she would remain standing so that he had to stand too, despite the fact that he was in his 80s.

Beating the heat Architects designed homes to maximize airflow in hopes that the occupants would be kept cool. High ceilings were not just decorative but also allowed a space for hot air to go. Coupled with large pocket windows that rose all the way into the walls above, high ceilings promoted airflow that kept air moving through each room. Adjoining rooms were yet another way to improve air circulation. All the rooms in the living areas of the Physick House join those next to them. The only exception occurs on the third floor between a bedroom and a storage room. A wide, covered porch also helped to keep the Victorian house comfort-
able. As air passed under the covered porch, it was shielded enough from the sun to drop a few degrees. By the time the air passed into the house, it was much cooler than the air outside. Shutters and shades were also employed to keep the house cool. Louvered shutters, like we find on the Physick House, allowed air to pass through but kept out the heat of the sun. Often, shutters and shades were opened and closed throughout the day as the sun moved around the house. Many a maid was probably kept busy as she traveled from room to room adjusting the shutters to keep out the sun.
