Explore the two floors of the 1879 Physick House Museum on your own and linger in the rooms that intrigue you, on this self‐guided tour experience. Photos welcome. Interpretive displays tell you about important features in each room. A costumed interpreter is available for questions. Tour also included admission to the “Cape May’s Stormy Past” exhibit in the Carriage House’s Carroll Gallery (see page 31). Last admission is at 3:45pm; the museum closes at 4:15pm. Tickets $12 adults, $8 children (ages 3 to 12)

Youngsters will see what life was like more than 100 years ago on a tour of this 1879 house museum, geared especially for 5-10 year-olds. Find out how kids (and adults) lived without electricity and many of the everyday things we take for granted today. Tours last about 30 minutes. All children must be accompanied by an adult. In the Victorian era, photography was young and extremely costly. When a loved one died, their relatives would sometimes have a photograph taken of the corpse in a pose – oftentimes with other members of the family. For the vast majority of Victorians, this was the only time they would be photographed. In these post-mortem photographs, the effect of life was sometimes enhanced by either propping the subject’s eyes open or painting pupils onto the photographic print, and many early images have a rosy tint added to the cheeks of the corpse. Adults were more commonly posed in chairs or even braced on specially-designed frames. 18

Victorians ate virtually every part of an animal, supping on delicacies likes brains and hearts. Another famous dish from the Victorian era was turtle soup. The turtle was prized above all for its green jellylike fat which was used to flavor the soup made from the long-boiled stringy flesh of the creature. 29

The Cape May Lighthouse was originally staffed by keepers who worked for the U.S. Lighthouse Service. Cape May’s lighthouse generally had one head keeper and two assistants. They carried oil to the top of the tower every day to power the light, and kept the lens apparatus clean and in working order. Keepers’ pay averaged $600 a year around the turn of the 20th century.

Guardian of the shore Fire Control Tower No. 23 on Sunset Bou- levard is New Jersey’s last freestanding World War II tower, part of the immense Harbor Defense of the Delaware system known as Fort Miles. Built in 1942, the World War II Lookout Tower was one of 15 towers that helped aim batteries of coastal artillery, stretching from North Wildwood, N.J. to Bethany Beach, DE. Four were in Cape May County —the towers located in North Wildwood 34

and Wildwood Crest were torn down and a third tower is located inside Cape May’s Grand Hotel on BeachAvenues. The World War II Lookout Tower is on land now owned by Cape May Point State Park and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on Nov. 17, 2003. The tower underwent major restoration by the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC). The Tower is now open to visitors daily. (see page 8) 23

So many women’s activities of the mid and late 19th century served to show that they were middle class. Making artificial flowers was one of these. Both time-consuming and useless, making artificial flowers proved that your husband’s income made it possible for you to do no housework. Along with disabling clothing and countless crafts, flower-making was a visible sign of middle-class-ness. The conventions of the time made women almost literally prisoners in their parlors. 36

The Victorians ate virtually every part of an animal. This is not entirely creepy if you are a food fanatic but for most people, the idea of supping on a bowl of brains and heart is not appealing. Another famous dish from the Victorian era was turtle soup. The turtle was prized above all for its green jelly-like fat which was used to flavor the soup made from the long-boiled stringy flesh of the animal. 37

Cape May’s only Victorian house museum is a great way to beat the heat and see what life was like 130 years ago for this Cape May family. This year, we offer new self-guided tours, in addition to our guided tours, so no matter what you’ve planned for the day, you can include a visit to this COOL estate. Includes a visit to the air-conditioned Carroll Gallery in the Carriage House to see the current exhibit “Cape May’s Stormy Past.” -- See page 6-7 ICED TEA and other refreshments are a great way to cool off, and it’s only one of the things to love about lunch or afternoon tea at the Carriage House Cafe & Tearoom, on the grounds of the Physick Estate. The Victorian period gave us such great works of terror as Dracula, and the Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.
