The accepted career for women in the Victorian era was marriage. To get ready for courtship and marriage a girl was groomed like a racehorse. In addition to being able to sing, play an instrument and speak a little French or Italian, the qualities a young Victorian gentlewoman needed were to be innocent, virtuous, biddable, dutiful and be ignorant of intellectual opinion. Yeah, right.

Say cheese

In the Victorian era, photography was young and extremely costly. When a loved one died, their relatives would sometimes have a photograph taken of the corpse in a pose – oftentimes with other members of the family. For the vast majority of Victorians, this was the only time they would be photographed. In these post-mortem photographs, the effect of life was sometimes enhanced by either propping the subject’s eyes open or painting pupils onto the photographic print, and many early images have a rosy tint added to the cheeks of the corpse. Adults were more commonly posed in chairs or even braced on specially-designed frames. 18

You go, girl!   The status of women in the Victorian era is often seen as an illustration of the striking discrepancy between national power and wealth and what many, then and now, consider appalling social conditions.   During the era symbolized by the reign of British monarch Queen Victoria, women did not have suffrage rights, the right to sue, or the right to own property. At the same time, women participated in the paid workforce in increasing numbers following the Industrial Revolution.   Feminist ideas spread among the educated female middle classes, discriminatory laws were repealed, and the women’s suffrage movement gained momentum in the last years of the Victorian Era. 30

Cape May’s Stormy Past: From the pages of The First Resort Open daily through Oct. 9: See calendar for times • FREE ADMISSION At the southernmost tip of New Jersey, Cape May is especially vulnerable to the elements. The Cape May Lighthouse was originally staffed by keepers who worked for the U.S. Lighthouse Service. Cape May’s lighthouse generally had one head keeper and two assistants. They carried oil to the top of the tower every day to power the light, and kept the lens apparatus clean and in working order. Keepers’ pay averaged $600 a year around the turn of the 20th century.

Guardian of the shore Fire Control Tower No. 23 on Sunset Bou-   levard is New Jersey’s last freestanding World War II tower, part of the immense Harbor Defense of the Delaware system known as Fort Miles.   Built in 1942, the World War II Lookout Tower was one of 15 towers that helped aim batteries of coastal artillery, stretching from North Wildwood, N.J. to Bethany Beach, DE. Four were in Cape May County —the towers located in North Wildwood 34

and Wildwood Crest were torn down and a third tower is located inside Cape May’s Grand Hotel on BeachAvenues.   The World War II Lookout Tower is on land now owned by Cape May Point State Park and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on Nov. 17, 2003. The tower underwent major restoration by the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC). The Tower is now open to visitors daily. (see page 8) 23

Busy hands

So many women’s activities of the mid and late 19th century served to show that they were middle class. Making artificial flowers was one of these. Both time-consuming and useless, making artificial flowers proved that your husband’s income made it possible for you to do no housework. Along with disabling clothing and countless crafts, flower-making was a visible sign of middle-class-ness. The conventions of the time made women almost literally prisoners in their parlors. 36

Are you going to eat that?

The Victorians ate virtually every part of an animal. This is not entirely creepy if you are a food fanatic but for most people, the idea of supping on a bowl of brains and heart is not appealing. Another famous dish from the Victorian era was turtle soup. The turtle was prized above all for its green jelly-like fat which was used to flavor the soup made from the long-boiled stringy flesh of the animal. 37

BEAT THE HEAT!

COOL ideas for HOT

summer days!

HISTORY IS COOL! And so is the AIR-CONDITIONED Emlen Physick Estate. Cape May’s only Victorian house museum is a great way to beat the heat and see what life was like 130 years ago for this Cape May family. This year, we offer new self-guided tours, in addition to our guided tours, so no matter what you’ve planned for the day, you can include a visit to this COOL estate. Includes a visit to the air-conditioned Carroll Gallery in the Carriage House to see the current exhibit “Cape May’s Stormy Past.” -- See page 6-7 ICED TEA and other refreshments are a great way to cool off, and it’s only one of the things to love about lunch or afternoon tea at the Carriage House Cafe & Tearoom, on the grounds of the Physick Estate. Dine indoors in the air-conditioned horse stalls. Enjoy a traditional Tea Luncheon or heartier fare from the cafe menu, as well as an afternoon tea. -- See page 91 GHOSTS ARE COOL...and Cape May is one of the most haunted places you’ll ever visit. After the sun goes down, you’ll hear all about them around town, at the Physick Estate and the Cape May Lighthouse, too. -- See page 19, 35 COOL AT THE TOP. You may warm up as you climb the 199 steps to the top of the Cape May Lighthouse, but it’s worth it for the cool breezes at the top, and the view is the coolest. Also visit the World War II Lookout Tower... not as many steps to the top and still keeps the family out of the sun! -- See pages 8 & 9 MYSTERY IS COOL. It is when it’s a performance of Clueless at the Physick Estate. The action unfolds around you in the

rooms of the AIR-CONDITIONED Physick Estate and we haven’t got a clue whodunnit.... (we do, but we’re not telling!) -- See page 52 EVENING TROLLEYS ARE COOL. After the sun goes down, you can see the town in the cool of the evening by hopping on one of MAC’s red trolleys. There are some cool trolley tours and rides that you shouldn’t miss, from ghosts to rides along gaslit streets, and plenty more. -- See evening calendar listings GET WATER COOLED...Board the Cape May Whale Watcher for a cool ride around the Cape. You’ll learn about our maritime history and see dolphins frolicking in the wake as you enjoy the cool ocean breezes. -- See pages 59, 61 HOUSES ARE COOL! Visit The Angel of the Sea, with its beautiful architecture and a really cool story about its history as a “mobile” home. -- See page 31 PICNICS are cool and you’ll find plenty of tables on the shady grounds of the Physick Estate. Get some take-out from the Carriage House Cafe & Tearoom and chill out. Take a stroll and learn about the Estate on the new Physick Estate Scavenger Hunt. -- See pages 47, 91

Just because it’s a scorcher out there is no reason to miss some of Cape May’s most popular tours and attractions... and you don’t even have to worry about wearing sunscreen!!!

Dark tales

The Victorian period gave us such great works of terror as Dracula, and the Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Even the Americans got in on the act with Edgar Allen Poe producing some of the greatest Gothic literature of the time. The Victorians knew how to frighten people and they knew how to do it in grand style. These works still form the basis of much modern horror and their power to thrill has not dwindled in the least. 40

One regular crime committed in the Victorian era was the abduction of children for their clothes. Well-dressed youth would be captured, stripped, and left running home in their underwear. This was one of the reasons chaperones were often employed. 41

Hitting the gym

Like today, many a Victorian man or woman thought working out and trying to get the perfect body would make life lovely. Victorians were often obsessive about health, fitness and beauty — the ones who could afford to spend many hours bodybuilding did so. This would also include many new dietary fads and exercise routines that would come and go just as they do these days. The idea was to eventually achieve the “Grecian ideal,” the perfect physique.
