The less fortunate

Poorhouses in Victorian England were government-run facilities where the poor, infirm, or mentally ill could live. They were usually filthy and full to the brim with society’s unwanted people. At the time, poverty was seen as dishonorable, as it came from a lack of the moral virtue of industriousness. Many of the people who lived in the poorhouses were required to work to contribute to the cost of their board and it was not uncommon for whole families to live together with other families in the communal environment. 17

Light your bike

Cape May was always popular for bicycle riders, and an 1897 ordinance wanted to ensure that everyone saw them. It stipulated that any bicycles, tricycles or similar vehicles needed to be equipped with lamps capable of illumination visible one hundred yards ahead. 18

Hitting the gym

Like today, many a Victorian man or woman thought working out and trying to get the perfect body would make life lovely. Victorians were often obsessive about health, fitness and beauty — the ones who could afford to spend many hours bodybuilding did so. This would also include many new dietary fads and exercise routines that would come and go just as they do these days. The idea was to eventually achieve the “Grecian ideal,” the perfect physique.

Sweep that soot!

In a city once ravaged by fire, one of the duties of the building inspector in Cape May during the 1890s was to see to it that every owner or occupant of a house had their chimney swept during the month of May each and every year, under penalty of a $5 to $50 fine.

Cape May’s Stormy Past: From the pages of The First Resort Open daily through Oct. 9: See calendar for times • FREE ADMISSION At the southernmost tip of New Jersey, Cape May is especially vulnerable to the elements. Hurricanes, Nor’easters, and blizzards have all left the city with a flood of memories and haunting images of utter devastation. Exhibit curator Ben Miller, author of Exit Zero’s bestselling book, “The First Resort,” provides visitors with an unforgettable look at iconic storms that have ravaged Cape May, and a greater appreciation for the awesome power wielded by Mother Nature.

Watch what you say

The completion of the first telephone system in the spring of 1895 certainly made things easier. With a manager and two operators, the exchange was open from 6 a.m. to midnight, with a pay station in West Cape May and another at Schellenger’s Landing. It cost 10 cents to use the phone. Phones could be put in private homes for $16 per year, and in business places for $30 per year. Of course, if a subscriber used profane language while speaking on the phone, it would be removed immediately. 33

Bucket brigade

The Cape May Lighthouse was originally staffed by keepers who worked for the U.S. Lighthouse Service. Cape May’s lighthouse generally had one head keeper and two assistants. They carried oil to the top of the tower every day to power the light, and kept the lens apparatus clean and in working order. Keepers’ pay averaged $600 a year around the turn of the 20th century. 34

Boo-hoo

Victorians took mourning seriously. Women often wore mourning rings which were usually made from onyx or jet and featured hair from the deceased person. Some would even bottle their mourning tears. Often, women were hired to stand at a bachelor’s grave site to cry inconsolably so that he seemed adored. When someone passed the family would often have a photograph taken of the body. Sometimes the family would even pose with the body to make it look alive.

One regular crime committed in the Victorian era was the abduction of children for their clothes. Well-dressed youth would be captured, stripped, and left running home in their underwear. This was one of the reasons chaperones were often employed.

UNDERGROUND RAILROAD TROLLEY TOUR

MAC

Tuesdays: 11am

New in 2017! Climb aboard Cape May’s newest trolley tour to hear tales of the Underground Railroad in Cape May. Hear how, fleeing their chains in Maryland, Delaware and Virginia, African American slaves braved strong currents and stormy seas, guided by the beacon at the Cape May Lighthouse. Hear how legendary anti-slavery fighter, Harriet Tubman, walked these streets, as did businessman and former slave, Stephen Smith, whose railroad cars carried hundreds to freedom. Includes a tour of the Owen Coachman House, a meticulously restored free Black’s home from the early 19th century. Board the trolley at the Washington Street Mall Information Booth at Ocean Street for this 2-hour tour.

Tickets $15 For more information, call 609-884-5404 or visit www.capemaymac.org Co-sponsored by the Center for Community Arts and the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC) 49
