Interpretive displays tell you about important features in each room. A costumed interpreter is available for questions. Youngsters will see what life was like more than 100 years ago on a tour of this 1879 house museum, geared especially for 5-10 year-olds. Cape May was always popular for bicycle riders, and an 1897 ordinance wanted to ensure that everyone saw them. It stipulated that any bicycles, tricycles or similar vehicles needed to be equipped with lamps capable of illumination visible one hundred yards ahead. 17

Like today, many a Victorian man or woman thought working out and trying to get the perfect body would make life lovely. Victorians were often obsessive about health, fitness and beauty — the ones who could afford to spend many hours bodybuilding did so. This would also include many new dietary fads and exercise routines that would come and go just as they do these days. The idea was to eventually achieve the “Grecian ideal,” the perfect physique.

The completion of the first telephone system in the spring of 1895 certainly made things easier. With a manager and two operators, the exchange was open from 6 a.m. to midnight, with a pay station in West Cape May and another at Schellenger’s Landing. It cost 10 cents to use the phone. Phones could be put in private homes for $16 per year, and in business places for $30 per year. Of course, if a subscriber used profane language while speaking on the phone, it would be removed immediately. 29

Hypnotism, divination and spiritualism were huge. Victorians would attend many events where they could get their future read, speak to the deceased or be hypnotized. This was a big money industry in this era, and it was usually filled with greatly paid actors. Freak shows were also big in the Victorian Era. Going to a freakshow for them was just as normal and accessible as us going to the movies.

Victorians took mourning seriously. Women often wore mourning rings which were usually made from onyx or jet and featured hair from the deceased person. Some would even bottle their mourning tears. Often, women were hired to stand at a bachelor’s grave site to cry inconsolably so that he seemed adored. When someone passed the family would often have a photograph taken of the body. Sometimes the family would even pose with the body to make it look alive.

The Victorians ate virtually every part of an animal. This is not entirely creepy if you are a food fanatic but for most people, the idea of supping on a bowl of brains and heart is not appealing. Another famous dish from the Victorian era was turtle soup. The turtle was prized above all for its green jelly-like fat which was used to flavor the soup made from the long-boiled stringy flesh of the animal. 37

Hear how, fleeing their chains in Maryland, Delaware and Virginia, African American slaves braved strong currents and stormy seas, guided by the beacon at the Cape May Lighthouse. Hear how legendary anti-slavery fighter, Harriet Tubman, walked these streets, as did businessman and former slave, Stephen Smith, whose railroad cars carried hundreds to freedom. Includes a tour of the Owen Coachman House, a meticulously restored free Black’s home from the early 19th century. The Victorian period gave us such great works of terror as Dracula, and the Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Even the Americans got in on the act with Edgar Allen Poe producing some of the greatest Gothic literature of the time. The Victorians knew how to frighten people and they knew how to do it in grand style. These works still form the basis of much modern horror and their power to thrill has not dwindled in the least. 40

IN VICTORIAN CAPE MAY Cape May is reputedly one of America’s most haunted towns, and nowhere else is this reputation so well-earned as at the 1879 Emlen Physick Estate, Cape May’s original haunted house. For years, MAC’s staffers had felt they were not alone in the house, but it was not until psychic medium Craig McManus began his investigations into the town’s paranormal activities that those who were not regular members of the MAC staff were identified. McManus, who has written several books about Cape May’s hauntings and has documented spirit activity at dozens of the town’s quaint B&B inns and hotel properties, has spent a great deal of time at the Physick house and has identified several of its residents. Most prominent among them is Dr. Physick’s Aunt Emilie, who has great energy and a vibrant smile, according to McManus. “This is a ghost who knows everything that is going on in her home,” McManus wrote. He also explained that, after her death, Emilie had stayed on to watch over the house, which had fallen into disrepair before its restoration began in 1970. Dr. Physick’s mother, Frances Ralston, is no longer in the house, according to McManus, but the strong presence she exerted in her lifetime is still felt as “residual energy,” especially in her bedroom on the second floor, the paranormal hot spot of the home. Another resident is Isabelle, or Bella, Mrs. Ralston’s invalid younger sister who died in 1883, shortly after the family

moved into the mansion. Among the unique spirits that McManus has reported are several of Dr. Physick’s dogs. He encountered several in the house on his first visit, and one romping through the gardens on a later visit. Apparently, there is some disturbance when the dogs are about, because they were never allowed in the house by Mrs. Ralston. Aunt Emilie, however, had a softer spot for Dr. Physick’s canine companions, and prepared their dinners in the estate’s kitchen, and would let them in the house when Mrs. Ralston was absent. The estate’s Carriage House also has its resident spirit, which has been heard by several of the MAC staff whose offices are on the building’s second floor. McManus said this could be one of the servants, possibly a groomsman or driver. One of MAC’s most popular ghost tours is Seance at the Physick Estate, where McManus leads a group of 25 people through the house to commune with its spirit residents. “Cape May’s original haunted house never disappoints,” McManus wrote about a recent tour. “It was one of the best haunting experiences I have had in my career! “There are very few real haunted mansions of this caliber that are open to the public,” he wrote in his book. “If you love the paranormal, this is a must visit!”
