The Stick Style architecture of the Emlen Physick Estate is characterized by wood construction with boxy projections, such as bays, wings and towers, a grid work of raised boards, called stick work, overlaying the clapboarded walls, and simple decorative elements, often geometric in design. These elements are in marked contrast with the ornate gingerbread trim found on many other Cape May houses. 16

Stay healthy

In a time when one in four patients died after surgery, you were very lucky in Victorian times to have a good doctor with a clean operating theatre. There was no anesthesia, no painkillers for after, and no electric equipment to reduce the duration of an operation. Victorian surgery wasn’t just creepy, it was outright horrific.

Withstanding the wind

The Cape May Lighthouse actually has two separate walls. The outside wall is cone-shaped, and is 3 feet 10 inches thick at the bottom, and 1 foot 6 inches thick at the top. The inside wall is a cylinder with 8.5-inch thick walls which support the spiral staircase. The walls were designed to withstand winds several times above hurricane force.

Sweep that soot!

In a city once ravaged by fire, one of the duties of the building inspector in Cape May during the 1890s was to see to it that every owner or occupant of a house had their chimney swept during the month of May each and every year, under penalty of a $5 to $50 fine. 38

Victorian women had rights? right to sue, or the right to own property. At the same time, women participated in the paid workforce in increasing numbers following the Industrial Revolution. Feminist ideas spread among the educated female middle classes, discriminatory laws were repealed, and the women’s suffrage movement gained momentum in the last years of the Victorian Era.

The status of women in the Victorian era is often seen as an illustration of the striking discrepancy between national power and wealth and what many, then and now, consider appalling social conditions. During the era symbolized by the reign of British monarch Queen Victoria, women did not have suffrage rights, the

Facts about the Queen From that day on, she wore only black and was in a permanent state of mourning.   During her reign, there were at least seven attempts to kill her. Several of the would-be assassins were sent to a mental asylum and were declared insane.   Queen Victoria could speak several languages, including Urdu and Hindustani. Although she never visited Canada, she declared Ottawa to be the capital of the province.   Although she treated her staff well, she did not care for Prime Minister Gladstone. Often, she would remain standing so that he had to stand, too, despite the fact that he was in his 80s.

Queen Victoria was a prolific writer, writing about 2,500 words every day during her adult life. Although some of her diaries were accidentally destroyed, many of these 122 volumes survive to this day.   Victoria did not like smoking and had ‘no smoking’ signs placed in almost all the rooms in the palace. She also did not like using the newly invented telephone.   She enjoyed looking at art and was quite a talented artist herself. On several birthdays and anniversaries, she gave her husband a painting depicting nude, or nearly nude, women.   Queen Victoria was devastated when her husband died in December, 1861.

Creepy Victorian food

Victorians ate virtually every part of an animal, supping on delicacies likes brains and hearts. Another famous dish from the Victorian era was turtle soup. The turtle was prized above all for its green jellylike fat which was used to flavor the soup made from the long-boiled stringy flesh of the creature.

Have you weighed your underwear?   In 1880, the Rational Dress Society was founded to promote the adoption of “a style of dress based upon considerations of health, comfort and beauty.” Apart from campaigning against tight-lacing, heavy skirts, and high heels, the Society aimed to “recommend that the maximum weight of underclothing (without shoes) should not exceed 7 lbs.”   Although many women probably silently applauded the efforts of the Rational Dress Society, few were willing to go against the grain of society and actually wear the clothing recommended by the Society. Those that did wear the rational costume were often ridiculed in public.   Culottes, or some other version of trousers, were widely attacked on grounds of

appearance, but were also attacked from the pulpit as contrary to God’s will. Saint Paul’s injunction against cross-dressing was the text/excuse for declaring this or that article of clothing un-Christian. Never mind that St. Paul didn’t wear pants. They weren’t invented for another 1,700 years after his lifetime. Attacks against Rational Dress were also thinly veiled attacks against Lesbianism.   Brimmed hats were favored in the summer because the brim shielded the face from the sun. In addition to a hat, women frequently carried a parasol or a fan to cool themselves. Parasols were handy for blocking the sun, while a fan could be used to stir up cooling air.

What’s for dinner? Victorians valued good cooking and food. However, there were great differences between what the rich and poorer people ate. The unemployed, and others with little money, survived on little more than potato parings, rotten vegetable refuse and scraps. Those on a slightly higher wage could occasionally purchase some bacon, cheese or sausage and workers in better-paid jobs had more choice and more wholesome food. Meal time provided the opportunity for the rich to display their wealth. This was done through rich foods, use of fine cutlery, china and servants. At the start of the period, French cuisine was in fashion, with as many as 20 dishes served at the same time in two great courses.
