Down the aisle

The accepted career for women in the Victorian era was marriage. To get ready for courtship and marriage a girl was groomed like a racehorse. In addition to being able to sing, play an instrument and speak a little French or Italian, the qualities a young Victorian gentlewoman needed were to be innocent, virtuous, biddable, dutiful and be ignorant of intellectual opinion. Yeah, right.

Carroll Gallery Exhibit

in the Carriage House at the MAC Emlen Physick Estate, 1048 Washington St.

FRANKLIN STREET SCHOOL From Segregation to Unification Daily through April 15; See Calendar for Times

From its opening in 1928, the Franklin Street School was a symbol of segregation and separation. It stood as a reminder of a racial divide, even after school integration in 1948. For two decades the Center for Community Arts has worked to preserve, stabilize and restore the School. The exhibit will include photographs, artifacts and recorded oral and video histories to chronicle the history of the School, the initial efforts to preserve and rehabilitate the building, and plans for the building’s expansion and completion as a community center for the people of Cape Island.

FREE ADMISSION Exhibit sponsored by the Center for Community Arts (CCA), in association with the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC)

MAC

AT ATLANTIC CAPE COMMUNITY COLLEGE New in 2018! Our popular Lunch & Learn series will also be offered at the beautiful ACCC campus. Bring a bag lunch and learn during these informative talks on popular topics of history, culture and the arts. Beverages will be provided.

12Noon at Atlantic Cape Community College Cape May Court House Campus 341 Court House-Dennisville Rd. JAN. 23: America: God’s Chosen Nation

From the Pilgrims through the Revolutionary War, Civil War, Westward Expansion,     waves of immigration and Spanish-American War, Americans have viewed themselves     as God’s chosen people, an exceptional Biblical City on a Hill, as close to perfection as is     humanly possible and a beacon for others to emulate. Today, this concept is a bit more     debatable. This illustrated program will present historic highlights used to support this    viewpoint. Presenter: Dr. Robert Heinly

FEB. 27: Classic Movies and Their Stars of Yesteryear

Explore the Golden Age of the American film industry via this sight and sound presentation of the classic studios, stars and films of the era. Hollywood became the   movie capital of the world as dream factories cranked out films and turned actors into  stars. Included will be a short history of the film industry and the major and minor studios of the era. Clips from classic films will highlight stars such as Bette Davis, Humphrey Bogart and John Wayne. Presenter: Alex Breve

MAR. 27: Tales of the Underground Railroad in Cape May

While not on the main line of this route from slavery to freedom, Cape May nevertheless made some unique and interesting contributions to this epic crusade.   This illustrated presentation, created jointly by the Center for Community Arts and MAC, includes local incidents, sites and personalities. Presenter: Ted Bryan

APRIL 24: Music and Memories of Frank Sinatra

Stay healthy

In a time when one in four patients died after surgery, you were very lucky in Victorian times to have a good doctor with a clean operating theatre. There was no anesthesia, no painkillers for after, and no electric equipment to reduce the duration of an operation. Victorian surgery wasn’t just creepy, it was outright horrific. 51

50 Years Later...1968 & the Vietnam War

MAC

1968 was a pivotal year in both Vietnam and the United States. Just prior to the Tet offensive and the turning of the War in Southeast Asia, anti-war protests broke out on college campuses in the States and the ensuing youth movement began to change American culture Saturday, April 14: 1pm

“House of Pegasus” – Folk Music and the War

The Vietnam War was a dominant musical theme in the ‘60s and ‘70s. Anti-war songs were an integral part of virtually every anti-war protest march and rally.

Program will be held at Cape May Lutheran Church, 509 Pittsburgh Ave. Light refreshments will be served. Friends of the World War II Lookout Tower, veterans and children 12 & under: free; non-members: $5 For tickets or more information, call 609-884-5404, ext. 116 Friends of the World War II Lookout Tower is an affinity group of the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC)
