The accepted career for women in the Victorian era was marriage. To get ready for courtship and marriage a girl was groomed like a racehorse. In addition to being able to sing, play an instrument and speak a little French or Italian, the qualities a young Victorian gentlewoman needed were to be innocent, virtuous, biddable, dutiful and be ignorant of intellectual opinion. FRANKLIN STREET SCHOOL From Segregation to Unification Daily through April 15; See Calendar for Times

From its opening in 1928, the Franklin Street School was a symbol of segregation and separation. It stood as a reminder of a racial divide, even after school integration in 1948. For two decades the Center for Community Arts has worked to preserve, stabilize and restore the School. The exhibit will include photographs, artifacts and recorded oral and video histories to chronicle the history of the School, the initial efforts to preserve and rehabilitate the building, and plans for the buildingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s expansion and completion as a community center for the people of Cape Island.

Victorians ate virtually every part of an animal, supping on delicacies likes brains and hearts. Another famous dish from the Victorian era was turtle soup. The turtle was prized above all for its green jellylike fat which was used to flavor the soup made from the long-boiled stringy flesh of the creature.
