Candles were an important part of Victorian Christmas traditions. Many homes used an Advent wreath to decorate during the holidays. It was common to place lighted candles in a home’s windows during the 12 days of Christmas to signify that food and shelter was available for weary travelers. Businesspeople also frequently gave candles to their customers as gifts. 18

Christmas Cards

Perhaps one of the most popular Victorian Christmas traditions that is still observed today is the sending of Christmas cards. The practice of sending printed Christmas cards was a modification of the then customary writing of greetings by English children to their parents. The printed cards enjoyed huge success and later on became a contagious practice that spread from England to the rest of the UK then to the rest of the world. More than a century later, we still send Christmas cards by the truckload to destinations around the globe.

Victorian Christmas Traditions

The roast turkey also has its beginnings in Victorian Britain. Previously other forms of roasted meat such as beef and goose were the centerpiece of the Christmas dinner. The turkey was added to this by the more wealthy sections of the community in the 19th century, but its perfect size for a middle class family gathering meant it became the dominant dish by the beginning of the 20th century. 30

Victorian Christmas Traditions

The German husband of Queen Victoria, Prince Albert, brought and introduced the Christmas tree from Germany to the United Kingdom in the 1840s. From Windsor castle, the tree’s popularity spread rapidly, becoming even more popular in the US than it ever was in England. 48

Victorian Christmas Traditions

Before the middle of the 19th century, the kissing bough was the primary piece of decorative greenery in the Victorian home for the holidays. A kissing bough, sometimes called a kissing ball, is a double hoop of evergreen boughs, holly, ivy, apples, pears, ribbons, lighted candles, and other ornaments with streamers going up to a central point and a sprig of mistletoe hung from its center. Victorian Christmas traditions dictate that any woman who wanders under the kissing bough has to allow herself to be kissed.

A Victorian Christmas feast   The Christmas dinner was probably the biggest meal of the year for the Victorians. There was no widespread refrigeration until the turn of the century, so what was on the dinner table varied from region to region depending on what was available. Most people had a ham and a turkey or some other readily available fowl, both with different types of stuffing/dressing, as well as various side dishes. Mashed potatoes, gravy, sweet potato pie or pudding, seasonal vegetables, oyster soup, mince pie, plum pudding, gingerbread cookies, sugar cookies, candy canes and a myriad of other dishes could be found on the Victorian table.   The serving of the pudding was one of the great rituals of the Victorian Christmas dinner, if you remember the scene at the Cratchit house; it was almost as much a ceremony as the cre-

ation of the pudding. The plum pudding, made up of suet, bread crumbs, raisins, and spices, was a family effort.   On Stir-Up Sunday at the beginning of Advent, each family member took a turn a beating the pudding, making a wish, and stirring clockwise for good luck. Then a ring, coin or thimble was tossed into the batter.   Until Christmas Day, the pudding hung from a sack, then it was boiled in beef broth for eight hours. After dinner it was turned out on a platter, topped with a sprig of holly, set alight, and carried into the dining room.   The head of the household sliced and served it, asking a blessing on all who prepared it. Biting into the portion with the ring meant marriage; the coin, wealth; and the thimble, a happy but single life.   Could there ever be a “bad” Christmas pudding? It seems most unlikely; for the ritual surrounding it and the joy of the occasion was such as to guarantee its success, no matter how poor the household in which it was served.
